This is a fantastic technique... video could have been shorter and better explained. Has kept my earbuds alive for over 2 years.

Some closer, slower detail and references to physical directions, relationships, things, would help me to understand the conceptual 'unloop' bit.
Also, I can wrap my earphones round and round and untangle them in an instand, so how is this any better? Does it twist them less?

I really don't understand how the hell would people dislike this? it's pretty useful

This working depends on starting it right. He's holding the jack so it points up, but most people hold the jack so it points down, because that puts the jack in your palm and feels natural. If you hold the jack point down in your right hand, wrap the cord behind your right hand, hold it in place with your thumb, put your left hand between your body and the cord, thumb down, loop your thumb around the cord, pull it towards you, letting the cord fall over the back of your left hand, and done.

guys this works extra well if you use your ipod as a "hand" it eliminates the need for a twist tie and it makes you look smart but not nerdy in front of cool people.

What I do is grab both ends, put them together and wrap them around my fingers, it takes half the number of coils and no kinks or anything. And when using headphone cases you can slip the coils into the pocket and leave the ends hanging out for easy access when you open the case.

Good shit, thanks for the video. I knew about the over-under method for larger cables, never realized I could use it for small cables like earbuds as well. Thanks again

A proof that wraping tightly your earbuds will not ruin them, it's just how tied that thing come in with the iPod. It's almost impossible to get them like that again

It would have been better without the camera cutting to and from the close up of your hands and back. This confuses me greatly.

Over under is a SHOCKINGLY easy method for people to screw up. I don't know how many people can't manage it with XLR's and how many XLR's we've had come back that are kinked or effed up. Best way to test that you did it right is just to hold the last end you wrapped [in this case the earbuds] and let the rest drop. It should not tangle or have any real bend in it to speak of.
Best of luck, happy long life, cables everywhere.

I really don't understand how people can complain about negativity on the video...two reasons
    1) I didn't see anything wrong with it...it may have been a tad clumsy in editing and presentation ur it was good enough that I understood how to do it.
    2) Everyone who's been complaining about "bad attitude" can't really say anything...you guys are worse when you start insulting people instead of giving constructive criticism...

@CCKid716 What you really want to avoid are the little tight loops. These are not tight loops, so there is no appreciable stress.
Every loop you make adds a twist to the cord. Going over-under alternates these twists in opposite directions, so they cancel each other out.
However, earbud cords are short and light enough that it's easy to untwist them, almost automatic if you just let them dangle. So over-under is kind of overkill here. But for, say, a 50 ft XLR cable, it's essential.

  • @markfleser

The same thing can be accomplished by twisting the wire as you coil. Making the coil introduces a twist to the wire doing his method you counteract that twist by coiling in the other direction, simply twisting the wire while coiling in the same direction removes the twist. The only reason why you would use the over-under method is if the wire you're coiling is huge or attached to something at both ends.

It would be better if they made headphone cable out of something more substantial than hair thin enameled copper.
You know, like 3 actual wires each individually insulated like they did in days gone by.
On the other hand if they made headphone cable the way they do now 50 years ago Dennis Nielsen wouldn't have been able to murder peoole with his headphone cable.
