Two black Sailors scared for their life on sailboat with no land in sight.

  • The day that our sailing adventure almost came to a quick end. As beginner sailors we took on our biggest sail for the first time. For the first time we would not have cell phone reception nor would we be able to see land while passing the Florida Everglades. Sailing is a challenge that only few can mentally conquer. So come along on one of our scariest sails ever.

As a reasonably experienced sailor, it's great to see new people coming into this sport. As with anything, there's lots to learn. Lots. There's many people in a similar situation - just bought a boat, just learning. I think you could have a niche in showing each new thing you learn. Eg, sail trim, reading the weather, etc.

Quick question: my biggest fear, hands down, is drowning. If I looked around in all directions and could see no land I'd probably have a stroke and flatline right then & there anyway tho. Lol.
My 2nd biggest fear is living my life afraid to do the things I want to do. My dad died with regrets. I don't want to. That would be a sort of metaphorical drowning right?
One thing I pretty desperately want to do one day, is sail across the arctic, pacific, or the red sea. Do you have any ideas for working up to it, overcoming the fear, or how to go about making it happen?
      Thank you!

Glad to see you two out there learning the ropes. Those squalls can get freaking scary especially when you have a loved one onboard. Keep the sails trimmed so that flapping doesn't wear them out too fast. Things on a sailboat break down fast enough as it is. Enjoy every moment, even the scary ones.

I'm very happy you guys survived after such turbulence on the water. You may have missed it in person, but I noticed a very spooky ghostly face in the clouds around 9:50. God Bless You and may you sail on sweeter waters here on in.

Doing something so far outside your comfort zone is an eye opening and wonderful experience to show you the things in life you are capable of doing and experiencing. Good luck out there and have some fun with your life and never be afraid of trying new stuff. Everybody willing to help you learn out there on the water.

the funny thing about fear and going thru the bad stuff: it's terrible in the moment but you feel fully alive after you come out the other side. You gotta have a playlist for when things get weird. I play PE's "911 is a Joke" when I go thru really bad storms...it pumps me up and reminds me that no one is coming to help. I gotta solve it myself. Plus, singing that can make you laugh in the face of the storm. Buffet's "stranded on a sandbar" is another good one to keep your spirits up when you inevitably join the running-aground club.

It' feels incredibly remote but you aren't really that far from civilization. You can also anchor off of East Cape or Middle Cape, catch snook and dinghy up the muddy creeks to see massive crocs

It's both Fun and Dangerous at the same time. I am hopeful that sometime down the road everyone will not see / or bring up the color of one's skin and just see the person as another human being. First Black Sailing couple on RUclips! Why so rare? :) You guys look like a fun couple. Wish I was in the Key's to hang out. I am in Michigan so I have a while before I can get on my craft.
I am not so sure how new you are to sailing but here are a few observations you will get shit for. Stow your fenders. It is like having a paper plate on your new car. everyone will think your a new driver. Remove the handles from winches and only insert when you are using the winch. Many reasons for this including not losing the handle, easier wrapping unwrapping lines and safety. Additionally not that I saw you doing it but I see a lot of noobees wrap the line around there hand when the want to pull it. Do not do this if you want to keep those fingers :)
I suggest you remove the engine from your dink when towing. If your dinghy flips your out 1000 bucks. It will also help if you make your self a "Y" tow bridle for the dink. It will tow better and straighter (no zig zagging) . There is some magic to the amount of line you let out when towing too, You will have to research that, a lot of science there.
The last thing is the warning that anything forward of the cockpit is a sacrificial gift to Neptune. That Genny up there is in danger. I cringed when I saw where you were stowing it. It looks like a beast tho. what is it about 3500 watts? Personally I would get a smaller more fuel efficient one that could stowed in a lazerette. This is more of a personal choice and I get it your wife using a laptop prolly sucks up a lot of juice.
Well that is MHO and it is worth as much as you paid! I hope you are having fun in the Key's... Are you gonna go out to the Dry Tortugas National Park ?
