Black Excellence in the World of recreational sailing. On Chicago's southside, The Jackson Park Yacht Club has possibly the largest membership of African American mariners in a U.S. Yacht club. This story is about a group of African Americans in the #JPYC who have broken records and pushed through societal barriers in recreational sailing. One of whom is the first African American to sail the world solo via the Cape Horn route. This story highlights members of both the JPYC and focuses on the crew of the cruising division sailboat, Mies En Place. The Mies En Place crew was the first predominantly African American crew to step on the podium to receive an award in the #ThisChicagoYachtClubs race from Chicago to Mackinac Island, Michigan.
Listen to the experiences of these sailors and share their stories.

Hi Richard, where did you get into sailing in Seattle? Asking for my bf who is moving here and would have a similar mission as yours mentioned here and is interested in getting started in sailing! Cheers @richardgraham5788

@39:50 The comment that the woman wearing the polo shirt that says President said that a minority person would not just stop at a yacht club " oh I wonder what they're doing on a Saturday. hmmmmm That is EXACTLY what I did. HAHAHAHA I moved to Virginia near the Potomac, and I searched for sailing clubs in the area, and I went to their social sail activity one day. I was and still is one of two black people in the club. I joined the club and became a skipper!! :) That was a very generalized comment that she made. AND I'm not Baptist. haha Great program though. Happy to see fellow Black Sailors. Oh I race too... plus coach/volunteer at the Special Olympics. I'm just getting started.... eh. It's a beautiful hobby!!! Love it.

Thankyou. I worked so hard on the (four years) through the loss of one of my best friends (seen in this video) and the loss of another dear friend (interviewed and seen in this video on the boat). If you like what you see, please feel free to share :) Still building this audience...hopefully big enough that I can finally pay my credit cards from producing all of this as a One woman band and keep these stories coming :)

I want and need to do my part…I’m a full time liveaboard cruiser from Hutchison Island out of Ft Pierce Florida. I was introduced to the life 2 years ago while on tour with Nelly and Snoop Dogg. I’m the youngest black man in the area, I’ve been searching for a black community like this to be a part of in Florida.
    Thank you for posting this…

Shared this to everyone I communicate with. This is the type of positive luxury activities I want see made. Black people doing cool and positive things that show us as complex and diverse people. Great content.

I am creating more :) Thank you for watching, sharing and commenting. It helps when times get rough and you get pushback such as when I showed NABS (National Association of Black scuba divers story - also on this channel two videoprior to this one' and NBS National Brotherhood of Skiers (one video prior to this one) some folks just asked me last week 'why do you need anything like that'. It's so frustrating to know folks still ask this!!! It's because representation matters, and I think they don't understand that it's more stories like these we need instead of the negative stuff, and instead of a company trying too hard to show though it's out of force and not genuine. We still have a long way to go :)

TY :) I would love to get this shared on a broad scale. Often times networks wand to show their narrative yet it's not the narrative of those involved. It's often times a perspective of what said company or media what to place it or how they want to present it. Feel free to share :) thnx for watching.
