Am very curious about those colorpallet options and if these are extended and or usible with color games as well or could it be only used with monochrome games,if only did some more testing ,but still trough it’s interesting, this is how the screen should,ve looked like back in 1998.
The Touch Screen makes controlling the screen way easier though, no more strange button combinations to turn up/down the brightness. Meaning also less wires to solder on.
Watching you struggle with the words for “just peel off the sticker backing” was a trip lol I love that you left that in! This is such a neat mod though. Looks so simple for what it is! (Though I def couldn’t do it haha)
Those screws are easy to strip because they are not Phlilips, no Japanese manufacturer uses those, they are JIS (Japanese Industry Standard) screws. They are very close to Philips but with different angle on the internal walls ... You have JIS bits in the ProTek Toolkit, please use those. Also Y screws are technically Tri-point not Tri-wing on all GameBoys.
While the touch screen adds little to the actual gameplay, having a screen that is perfectly viewable from all angles and perfect colors would have been a dream come true for my kid self back then lol.
I have one problem with that mod : it makes the FPGBC less ultimate. To me, the FPGBC had become the "perfect" GBC : it's cheap (at least, a lot cheaper than an original GBC with the exact same IPS panel or an Analogue Pocket), it was a lot easier to assemble, it has a rechargeable USB-C battery and it doesn't need a sacrificial original GBC (of course, there's still a few quirks, especially with flash carts, but they are releasing updates for that). With the OLED panel now, it means the best GBC is again a modded console, with basically no work to do, so we're back to sacrificing consoles. I don't really mind, but the prices have become crazy in the last few years, I'm afraid of what the availability will be in a few more years, affordable FPGA is really the future for most people and I really hope they'll release a new revision of the FPGBC (or an FPGBA) with that panel.
Grate tip for removing stripped screws: A pair of model kit snippers. Very carefully but firmly pinch them and slowly turn. You can typically at least get the initial tight fit loosened and take it out with a screw driver.
I laughed way too hard at the 'I shattered it!' 😂😂. Another wonderful build! Thanks for showing us the process!! Gorgeous display and very practical too!
Mine finally came today and rewatched your video for advice during the build. I also went with the white but with all white buttons. Its a beautiful thing.
These gameboys really are bulletproof. I found mine buried in my friends yard while doing yard work. I had to replace the battery terminals, and the speaker, now it works like new.
Got on today newly arrived "big boyz" Seiko, 1973 Seiko 6119-5431 the curvy TV on original Seiko 3 link jubilee... one of the most iconic of the late 60's early 70's models got for $40 dollaroonies and keeping marvellous time too... Been a good time for rare Seiko, with my 6309 orange diver, my 6106 DX "fridge" and am in the process of acquiring a Pulsar "manta ray" which was the Pulsar version of the Seiko "Monster" dive watch...
I look forward to eventually DS phat OLED screens. That's the best DS and replacing the screens would make it the ultimate (original) DS. Optimally a 2DS XL replacement would be nice too but that seems a bit too recent to get a mod like this and the screens aren't _that_ bad.
I don't think for the ds fat will be anything coming. The ds lite wil get nice replacement displays, but for the fat very unlikely. There aren't even any good replacement-shells for the fat. They all look cheap.
@FoxMccloud42 idk, with the rise of quality 3d printed shells for consoles like the sega nomad, new ds phat shells aren't too far-fetched to expect for the future
Snagged one of 5 remaining on Ebay last night. Super stoked. I need to get a handful of other mods I've been wanting to try put together then pick either my spare green one or a busted one to go ham on.
the laminated Q5 IPS mods have had the lit color changing logo for a few years now what really blows my mind about this mod is the fact the battery life is better than the IPS screen. I always thought OLED used more power but apparently not you can get up to 2 hours extra run time with this screen compared to the IPS one.
When the bloody logo started changing colour, I lost it. I thought IPS screens made definitive Gameboy displays, but obviously we've just witnessed next level Gameboy
According to Tito's video on the Macho Nacho channel the other day, the "FRM" option is likely a "flicker reduction/removal mode" toggle for if games show visible screen flickering.
Lately I've been really regretting selling my clear purple GBC I picked up in America in the late 90's. Seeing this and that they offer a clear purple shell means I have to try and get one when they return to stock. I don't even have a console to use, so guess I'll have to fight everyone for a working one too! Cheers Eliot!
Finally! I've been asking for years why aren't we using touch screen technology in gameboy/gba mods, and ppl were just saying that it would be too difficult to do. And I'm like, is a decade old tech, children's 6$ pretend phone toys have touch how hard can it be? This took way to long. Another thing modders should be doing if they don't what to cut out shells is use the gameboys/gba battery indicator light hole to install a light censor to control the brightness of the console without trimming or having to solder.
Just bought one off these screens yesterday, had to buy a donor gameboy colour as my units are too nice to destroy. it was the colour changing nintendo logo that got me hooked. Seemingly its a blackberry touchscreen
The screens for the OLED mod kits are sourced from Blackberry Q10 devices, of which are manufactured by Samsung. The PSVITA 1000 series systems also have a Samsung-made display, meaning a Game Boy Color with this kit is now on par with a PSVITA display-wise lol
While the touch screen is a silly gimmick that didn't need to be added, that screen itself is pretty damn good, especially for the price and ease of install!
More than likely the wire thats soldered is only used for the reset function in the OSD menu. so you wouldn't need to solder it in if you dont want to use the reset feature!
Hey i did the same, final exam fir electric school. Unfortunately its about an inch larger than yours. Didnt always have small touchscreens back in the days
I mean for 40 quid the size of the screen alone is worth it! Thinking about buying a second gameboy and backlighting it, might have to keep an eye out for these to come back in stock!
Bro, same here! I was looking at it yesterday thinking "Meh, maybe I'll get it later. There seems to be plenty to go around atm.", but I had so many inner thoughts telling me to get one NOW so I ordered one yesterday to replace my old Q5 in my main GBC. Good thing I did that, just checked and they're completely gone now. Yikes...
Neat video, but the thumbnail sorta led me to believe this was gonna be something else. A HQ backlit screen is awesome and so is that logo, and the ability to change settings without buttons is nice- but I figured that this was gonna be some crazy homebrew stuff where you gave touchscreen functionality to the games or something (probably not helped by my personal belief that the OG Pokemon games could work fine with touch-screen mobile ports).
I kinda thought that's what it was gonna be too. I would think the games have to be designed with touch inputs in mind which weren't for obvious reasons lol. The extra functionality is more than worth it though
Ya I think the whole re-using the IR blaster up top for a touch panel is much better approach, no need to finger print your screen. But this does give you more options I guess.
2:50 the reason you had to use a larger bit is because you’re using the wrong screwdriver. These are not Phillips screws they are JIS screws. Use the right driver bit and you won’t have problems with stripping the heads. Go figure, a Japanese manufacturer would use Japanese screws.

this is awesome. nintendo should make a console with a touch screen like this. they could even add a second screen.
I would not consider it unless it was foldable otherwise it would just look like a tablet with two screens and buttons on the front.
@@AtomicCortex that's a great idea. maybe they could even make version that has support for 3d
@@Cyranek yeah, a joystick would also be a really cool feature, it would allow for a lot more gameplay options

Top of the line mod for gameboy, that colored backlit logo is a cherry on the top.

Funny enough that's the one part keeping me from getting a laminated screen, I hate the look of that
It's not the cherry on top, it's the sole reason why I really want one now.
q5 mod had the coloured backlit logo for a while now
You need a stylus for that. And so, a stylus sheath consequently.
But it seems to be a capacitive screen, not pressure based like Nintendo DS series :D
@@gefriernudel3004 lol its a reference to him building the ds lite, he named it the stylus sheath while assembling it.

Didn't add shit, can't even play the game with touchscreen so I don't see much purpose to this.
It added screen controls to control how it looks
It’s just for controls which is decent but I wouldn’t get it for just that the oled is the best thing about it

Yeah. That's sick. I'd love one of these for the SP or the GBA.
Amazing product and different from the 8 or above soldering process. Easy install and cheap. I am impressed
Amazing looking screen quality, love you can change Gameboy color logo too. Nice!
My guess as to why the screws in gameboys round is because they are likely J.I.S (Japanese Industry Standard) and not Phillips.
That is most likely right. And the iFixit kit that Elliot is using have J.I.S. bits that he should use instead of Philips.
you mean trywing right?
Absolutely loving the frequent uploads man! The vibes are absolutely chill and exactly what I need after a long day at work.

I gasped when I saw the lit color logo too. Lol I’m definitely going upgrade my color gameboy that’s been in a sock sleeve for 15 years.
