Rich, I can’t begin to tell you how helpful these videos you’re making have been to my learning curve. They’re easy to understand and easy to follow along to also. Some people have a natural ability to teach even when it isn’t their profession. You’re that type of person.
Me too, Until i had my boy set up another monitor to my right, I feel everything as individual was useless to me. These videos aren't long but are very instructive especially when I have Lighburn on the left and a video on the right to try eveything as we go...Thanks LHG for this...
had my xtool d1 pro 20w for about 3 weeks now was using xcs to no avail not really a vast amount support there, so i made the switch to lightburn and yes it can seem overwhelming to a newbie like myself with all the functions but it suit's my learning style. i purchased several grids with no real progress, then i come across this video so THANK YOU RICH for creating this video! I just finished creating my first grid following your video switching between screens. thank you for the tips and helping me learn lightburn in the process.
I have had Lightburn for about a year or so now. Knew nothing about lasering when I got my first Jtech Laser. After watching many videos on Lightburn I thought I learned a lot. I bought the Ortur Master Pro laser a few weeks ago and came across your you tube page. I have been addicted to watching your videos since. Since watching your videos I realized I knew very little on how to navigate Lightburn. I learned more in the last few weeks than I did in the past year. Your videos make it so easy to follow along. I have been doing so many things either wrong or the hard way taking so long to set things up. It's like I hit the laser lottery once I stumbled upon your you tube channel. You made lasering more fun now rather than frustrating. Like other comments on your videos, yours are second to none. Thanks
Good morning_ Just became a patreon sustainer and wanted to say you are my first Patreon subscription. I appreciate your knowledge especially as a relative newbie and the fact that you give away so much and don't try and nickel and dime us for every bit of info. Have a great day.
I have to agree with the other commentors. Your channel is a life (time) saver. I appreciate your willingness to share your experience and knowledge. Your tutorials are excellent and extremely helpful in overcoming the laser/lightburn learning curve. I wish you much success in your ventures.
I'm really happy that I found your channel. I learned so much from your tutorials and you definitely saved me hours of trials and errors on my laser. I highly recommend your videos - there are pearls of wisdom for all levels of users. Thank you!!!
I have to agree, your video's have been very useful. I've found myself not using my laser much, because I couldn't figure out lightburn, how to manipulate images, traces, notes or power / speed setting. You have made it enjoyable and helped so much, Thank you
Very informative. I had watched another video on generating the grid but liked your approach much better. It made perfect sense not to waste time/material scorching things.
Excellent tutorial. I spend days trying to understand this layer thing and now it is as clear as daylight. Love your channel and keep up the good work.
Phenomenal video!! Thank you for thinking of the newbies. I had an Ortur some time ago (been about a year without a laser) and just got the Neje Max 3 anmd have been struggling for a week trying to get focus/speed/etc set up. This video brought it all back. Thank you so much!!
I just purchased my first diode laser. Atezr P10 and I love it. Thank you so much for this video. It's made a huge difference. Looing into doing slate coasters and cutting boards. We'll se how it goes.
Just purchased a Sculpfun s30 pro. Looked all over the place for the power scale or something about it. Thank you a million! this video really helps get a grasp on things.
Rich, this is a great video for a newbee such as myself. working each step as you show in the video as you complete each step. Currently burning this on 4mm piece of white oak. Thank you!
Very informative. Your right the others don't say anything about changing or not using power settings for testing on different material or explaining that the diode has a short life span..
I ordered a Ortur pro s2 and I haven’t even received it yet and I wanted to give up because I feel so clueless and dumb … your videos are a saving grace ,I am learning so much ! Thank u so much for for time in making these !
Rich Thank you so so much for putting these videos together! i really appreciate all the time you've put into these videos. Even the little tips are sssooo helpful! My learning curve is so much faster than if i had to figure out everything myself! May the universe return you the generosity you put out!
I thought I was a moron because I couldn't get the test grid to work on my machine! Turns out I was using an image of one and needed to create it and set the speeds and power levels. Your video made it easy! Once again, thank you for all your great videos!!! I'm pretty certain I have watched them all now (yes, to the very end :D)!!
I made it right along with you. The only thing I had to do that wasn’t showing was to Window-Filled/Coarse or Smooth to see the squares actually filled in with color on the screen. Thanks mate.
Once again, a great video. The only thing I would mention is you can highlight just the part of the scale you want to output and turn on "Cut Selected Graphics" and then press "Start". I find this is an easy way to do it because I will forget or miss to turn on a burn layer or turn a layer off.
Just setting up my Xtool. I have no clue what I'm doing, I took on this task vs using the built in material test to try and learn the machine; this definitely helped, thanks.
Thanks Rich, your tutorials have been a big help. I've been playing with my new Atomstack A10 Pro for the past month. I'm trying not to waste materials. So, I think creating a material list will help a lot. I guess I have a lot more to learn from you.
It would be nice to have a baseline on speed and power for us that don’t have experience, although experience comes through doing things. Glad I found your channel. Keep up the great work
Hey Rich, thanks again for this great tutorial. One thing I particularly like, is that when you make your files available, they are on your website. I like to watch videos on my iPad, but I like to take my laptop which has LightBurn on it, and use it to download the files.
I try and make as many available as I can David. I also have an online store where I sell files, but there are a lot of freebies there as well. engraveandcutfiles.com/

@@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy I tried that but it just burned deep and hard on all the lines. Like it was on 100/100. I did this one like you posted and it did awesome.
Hi Rich I'm Kevin from Manchester, England. I've just got a P20 pro. Thank you for your videos I'm finding them informative and and easy to follow. I've just been following you step by step on how to make a test grid. When creating the initial box and making the array mine only came up as lines and filled from the bottom upwards. The preview shows different shadings for the power settings but again only as empty boxes, what am I doing wrong or what settings do I need to adjust and where do I find them?
Hello, I just picked up a Atezr 35 Plus laser and am wondering how I should alter the settings to accomadate for the 35W laser. You're channel and videos are the BEST. Thank you for all the time and effort you put into these!
I found, an excellent explanation tomorrow I will put it into practice to get rid of the headache. Thank you very much for such an excellent explanation and for taking your time to teach us. Thank you
Lightburn has updated since this video Philip, and now if you click Laser Tools from the main menu, you'll see a built-in Material Test, which is much easier to use.
Rich, thnks for this. I'm new and this will help me a lot. Couldn't find the download. But that doesn't matter because i leatn doing it myself. When you select a new layer, do you use the rectangle? When i do that the selected area is in total the color of the layer, instead of only the blocks. Think i find it out. It groups everything.. But why?
Fantastic tutorial! Thank you so much! Very thorough. I am really enjoying all your videos and learning so much from you. Thank you for taking the time to educate us.
Hi Rich, Just want to say Thank you for your dedication to helping each of us learn Laser. I am definitely a newbie, I've had my Ortur 15w for a while but ain't done a thing yet. Just got Lightburn a couple days ago and I guess it's like learning to drive a car, take it slow, pay attention and start driving. Well going to give it a go New years weekend. Really appreciate your teaching, you cover a lot of ground at a good speed, although I have to tap the brakes(pause) a bit and then continue. Will be back in days ahead to check out your files etc and will be supporter one way or another. Thanks man. Happy New Year. Andrew
Let me tell you when they say never leave your laser alone they are 100% right, I finally downloaded your file Rich and I tested one of the cheap plywood coaster they sell on Amazon the one that come in a pack of 60. When the laser(sculpfun s9)started burning mate when it got to 100 power the thing nearly caught on 🔥, I stopped it immediately and I ended up adjusting the output at 40 % en every layer, even 50 it burns the plywood. Any way great file and everyone should run this test
@@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy I figured that out late last night. But it was good to go through it step by step anyway. I understand it much better thanks to your video.
Love that you share your files. Seems like a lot of laser RUclips creators put up a link to their Etsy page. I'm used to the 3d printing community where most everything is free on thingiverse. Anyways, I'm new to lasers and lightburn, but I noticed in 1.3.01 there is a material test option under tools. Looks like it auto generates cut test grids. Has anyone played around with this yet?
Rich. new subscriber, new to lasers, GREAT Vids !! Question. I am a photographer and we use a neutral grey card to achieve proper exposure in the lighting at hand. What are we shooting for with this test grid. What are we setting our laser power for? are we looking for the lightest lights, The darkest darks, something in the middle? Are we metering or measuring (metering) the power off a certain spot on our image we are engraving? Where do we start with our test grid? Do we go with the darkest setting and the laser works down from there or do we start with the lowest best result and the laser works up? Where do we not start or what do we avoid?
You're looking for all those things. Sometimes you may want to put different areas on different layers, having some light, others medium and still others dark. The test card gives you the ability to achieve these multi-shaded results.
@thelouisianahobbyguy I did everything you did in the video I have the 1.7.03 version of light burn and when I did the same thing that you did in the video ( different speed and power ) when I click on the preview button everything seems to be shaded dark. why ?
one more question, sorry. I have a xTool D1 Pro 5w and I am running this with the settings provided, and it is not burning at all...anything I can check for or recommendations. Thanks in advance!!
do you have an example for engraving slate with a 10-watt laser i brand new to using my laser I have a creality falcon 10-watt falcon volume 2 and it all very confusing to me any help will be much appreciated
I like making these projects with you on my machine. It's helped me a learn. I have a small question. Why are my boxes not filled in like yours (whether it is set on line or fill)? They are only outlined in the different colors.
Great video, I created the grid but I’d like to get your file so I have your notes. I joined and looked on forums and website but guess I’m not finding it
Rich, fairly new to the laser seen, can you explain after you do a speed/power test grid, how does that help you choose your speed and power when you are setting up an image to burn?
Good Afternoon thank you for your videos they are very helpful. I have seet up the grid like you did in your video but mine doesn't look like yours can you please tell me what I did wrong? I took a picture but it doesn't allow me to load it
Thank you for your videos. I do have a question on the results in your video and how to interrupt them. At the 17:09 you have a sample card you run . What square would you use for fill the same coloring could be generated on many squares. example 40/2000 looks the same as 100/3000. As a newbie at this I like the color at 40 power it look s consistent from 1000 to 3000 speed. does running a design at 40/3000 make sense as it is faster and i do not notice any over burn on the test. What are your thoughts.
Thank you for sharing. My first test grid had to be aborted because of too much power, possibly the test file that I used. This looks like it'll get me on track! Look forward to watching more of your videos.
Thank you, as I am still learning that is why I watch your videos your awesome. but I do have a question the file you graciously gave us, does that need to have some lines deleted? and what material did you test it on? or can you do all lines?
I just finished making this file and getting ready to test my 10 Watt laser. That's when I thought maybe I should confirm with you if these numbers here are for a 5 watt laser or 10 watt laser? Maybe it works for both, I don't know. I will patiently wait for your reply before I test this file. Thank you. Diane
Hi Rich, I just did your tutorial today and have to say I learned a lot. I replayed it several times and pretty much studied each screen you brought up to better understand how you are set. One thing I noticed is that I think I have a slightly newer version of LightBurn than you did on this vid (1.0.02) so I noticed some of the display boxes like for cuts/layers are slightly different. One thing I wanted to ask was on the array feature. When I set mine up, I could not get any of the boxes to fill (with the color). Obviously doesn’t make any difference in the printout, but it did make yours easier to follow. I downloaded your power test file and when opened, your boxes too had no fill, but line colors are still the same. I’ll try pinging LightBurn but thought I’d mention it. Your vids are awesome!! Thanks for posting!
Yup, you got it Elmer! 👍 Lightburn comes by default in Wireframe / Coarse because of system resource use. I keep mine in Filled / Smooth because I have a gaming level desktop that I do the videos on. Many or most people are using a laptop, so that wouldn't be an optimal starting point for them. *Thanks for the comments!*

The test card gives you the ability to achieve these multi-shaded results.
thanks for showing the real world of doin this
My pleasure Rich!
Thank you .... thank you ! Finally found a video that stops me wasting expensive ply :)
Glad I could help Mike!
@thelouisianahobbyguy I did everything you did in the video I have the 1.7.03 version of light burn and when I did the same thing that you did in the video ( different speed and power ) when I click on the preview button everything seems to be shaded dark. why ?
That's what the preview does James. Zoom all the way in and you'll see it better.
such great information! I have been feeling very lost at figuring out this laser!
Glad it helped Theresa! Wait until you see my next video tomorrow! It's going to make you an expert! Hope you clicked that bell notification!
Out of curiosity...why didn't you use the one provided in lightburn...or was this more of a tutorial on making the grid?
At the time this video was published, there were no Laser Tools in Lightburn.
@@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy that thought occurred to me after I posted the question.
Perfectly explained! Excellent job!
Glad it was helpful!
one more question, sorry. I have a xTool D1 Pro 5w and I am running this with the settings provided, and it is not burning at all...anything I can check for or recommendations. Thanks in advance!!
The settings have to be customized to your laser.
Thank you for making an easy to understand video
Thank you so much Crafty Clover! I really appreciate it! 👍
Thank you so much… I’m just starting to use a laser and at 62 I need good instructions.
You can do it Cindy! You'll be an expert in no time!
do you have an example for engraving slate with a 10-watt laser i brand new to using my laser I have a creality falcon 10-watt falcon volume 2 and it all very confusing to me any help will be much appreciated
No I don't right now Lisa, but there is one in the works. The same principals apply, running a test grid to get the right settings.
I like making these projects with you on my machine. It's helped me a learn. I have a small question. Why are my boxes not filled in like yours (whether it is set on line or fill)? They are only outlined in the different colors.
Because I have my work area set to preview Elizabeth. Window --> Filled Coarse
Thank you for the Video, it is very helpful for me as a beginner
Glad it was helpful Robert!
Great video, I created the grid but I’d like to get your file so I have your notes. I joined and looked on forums and website but guess I’m not finding it
This file is now outdated and was replaced by the Material Test under the Laser Tools menu in Lightburn.
great video, working with slate so useful Rich
Awesome! 👍 Thanks for watching!
Rich, fairly new to the laser seen, can you explain after you do a speed/power test grid, how does that help you choose your speed and power when you are setting up an image to burn?
You use the image test Tony. You can download the Universal test card from my free forum.

Good Afternoon thank you for your videos they are very helpful. I have seet up the grid like you did in your video but mine doesn't look like yours can you please tell me what I did wrong? I took a picture but it doesn't allow me to load it
Not in a RUclips comment Lisa, but I have a free forum where you can ask: lahobbyguy.com/bb
great video and thank for the download , question do you have video on setting up the frequency for fiber lasers chart guild as well
Not yet Richard.
I cannot find the file on your website and I also can’t find the link to the file in the description.
There is no need for it anymore Cortney. Lightburn has one built-in now under Laser Tools.
It's all a matter of preference Mark. Some folks run at high power, and others don't want to. That's the purpose of the test cards.
Thank you for sharing. My first test grid had to be aborted because of too much power, possibly the test file that I used. This looks like it'll get me on track! Look forward to watching more of your videos.
Using a 15w laser master 2.
This was done on the 20W LM2, 5.5W optical output Rob.
@@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy so I should probably bring the power down a little?
Thank you, as I am still learning that is why I watch your videos your awesome. but I do have a question the file you graciously gave us, does that need to have some lines deleted? and what material did you test it on? or can you do all lines?
The test grid is for any and every material.
I really appreciate you and your videos.
Thank you so much Kieth! I really appreciate it! 👍
Very educational, You cleared up a lot of issues.
Thank you Jim!
I just finished making this file and getting ready to test my 10 Watt laser. That's when I thought maybe I should confirm with you if these numbers here are for a 5 watt laser or 10 watt laser? Maybe it works for both, I don't know. I will patiently wait for your reply before I test this file. Thank you. Diane
Hi Diane, this was made for a 5W laser. Just double the speed.
Just what I was looking for Cheers.
Thank you Sir! Glad you liked it!
Another great video Rich just what I was looking for would your setting be ok with the Ortur Laser Master 2 Pro S2 laser😀👍
Yes, absolutely Malcolm.
Thanks for doing this video. I have been trying o figure this out for a while.
Glad I could help Michael!
Just figured it out; under Window menu, then View Style, you need to choose filled/smooth and viola,, your text is filled. Thanks!
And by the way, you get to see the same thing in the preview window.
Great video, thanks for this one! Greetings from Germany
Glad you enjoyed it Thorsten! Thank you!
I am yet to buy a laser cutter so I am finding your vid's useful in making my choice of machine so thanks
Glad I could help Terry!
