Bob Welch helped create the band back in the early 1970s and shaped their sound for years to come. Unfortunately for the band, Bob ran into some troubling circumstances just when Fleetwood Mac’s music began to take off.
Bob struggled with addiction all throughout his lifetime. Bob Welch decided to leave the famous band in the mid 1970s to try and get a grip on his life and his own music. Bob set out to become a solo artist, but like many, he did not reach the fame he wanted. Though some of Bob’s songs hit the billboards, his career fizzled out in the early 1980s. Desperate for a change, Bob moved to Nashville, where things went south.
Much like Bob, the band experienced heartbreak and failure over the years. Though the band became famous for their unique sound, many of the couples within the band went through pain, betrayal, and divorce. Fleetwood Mac soon became notorious for scandalous affairs within the group.
While the members were reaching new heights of fame, many of their personal lives were in chaos. Ironically, while friendships and marriages were falling apart, the new album titled “Rumors” was released and soon became one of the most beloved records of all time. Rumors would be hard to top for the band after receiving a record breaking number of sales.

Bobby was my close friend at the time of his death I spent hours and hours with him he had arthritis it crippled him ! He was good to me and his wife Wendy was a great person it’s crazy she died in her sleep two years later from a broken heart 💔

Watching this Vlog, you would think this guy did not have success as a solo artist, but he did have great success with French Kiss which had songs that I like better than Fleetwood Mac.

As a kid in the 70s, I listened to the radio constantly and habitually nagged my parents to buy LPs and 8 tracks .. A few years ago, I came across Bob's French Kiss album that my parents had purchased when it first came out, and not having heard the songs in probably 30 years, I was really struck how good the album is .. I was flooded with emotions hearing Ebony Eyes and Sentimental Lady again after all that time .. those two songs in particular stand out to me ,and I consider them the best of the best from an incredible decade, right up there with other greats like ELO's Telephone Line and Turn To Stone, 10CCs I'm Not In Love, Exile's Kiss You All Over, damn, the list goes on, what a great time for music ... RIP Bob, and thank you
Bob Welch was an awesome performer! He was my first concert. I was 14 at the time. I feel extremely grateful to have had the pleasure of seeing him perform.

Never met Bob but worked around people who knew him as a performer and some close freinds. Never herd anthing except how cool he was and kind spirit. Easy to work with but knew what he wanted. As a young musician i was such a fan of his solo work my rhodie had to tell me he was in Fleetwood Mac....I didnt even know it till 85 over a bottle of Vodka, my rhodie was never wrong. RIP Bob...Thanks.
The Bob Welch years were my favorite Fleetwood Mac years. I loved Bob Welch. Saw him several times. An underrated guitar player and song writer.

Bob Welch was not an original member. Fleetwood Mac was formed in 1967. Bob was in the band from 1971 to 1974. Also, original member Peter Green was a guitar player(an excellent one btw), not a drummer.
Mick Fleetwood once bet someone that Peter green would always be in his band but then he Welched on his bet. hahaha...Just joking.

I lived the history. I also survived which is no small task.
Peter was exceptional in his understanding of complex matters. He is a generous soul - present tense intentional.
No ego. No pretense. Just what the band was capable of. Too bad about what happened in Germany, but something was going to give anyway.
Peter the drummer. That's pretty ignorant. Hard to let that one go.
Stevie and Lindsey were never married. They were a live-in couple. Also, Stevie and Mick didn't start having an affair until 1978, two full years after her and Lindsey broke up. A simple google search would show you as much.

Saw Bob in 1978. Thought his album French Kiss was a great album. He started his set doing 2 or 3 songs and it started to rain. He stopped saying he didn't want to be electrocuted and said he would continue if it stopped. The rain stopped and he finished his set. It was a great show. Great performance.

Mystery to Me was my introduction to FM. Bob's version of the band has always been my favorite. When he created Paris, I bought both of those records, along with French Kiss, and all the FM records going back and going forward. . . all quality, enjoyable music. Bob was a vital part of Fleetwood Mac and deserves the recognition. Thank you.

Some people the legend lives on and they become immortal in a way Bob's sweet sweeping guitar rhythms are a constant reminder that we are all unique in some way. He was cool back when cool was just getting started.

Mr. Welch was a guitarist, vocalist and songwriter for Fleetwood Mac from 1971 to 1974. The band was formed in England in the late 1960s by guitarist Peter Green, and its name derived from two members of the group, drummer Mick Fleetwood and bassist John McVie.
After Mr. Welch replaced Green in 1971, he had a major part in reshaping Fleetwood Mac’s sound to a sweeter, more pop-oriented approach. He wrote the song “Hypnotized,” which appeared on the group’s 1973 album, “Mystery to Me,” and was a key member of the band through five albums, including “Heroes Are Hard to Find” (1974).
“He was a huge part of our history, which sometimes gets forgotten,” Mick Fleetwood told Rolling Stone. “Mostly his legacy would be his songwriting abilities that he brought to Fleetwood Mac, which will survive all of us." Mr. Welch left the band in 1974, just before singer Stevie Nicks and guitarist Lindsey Buckingham joined the group. The reconstituted band had its breakthrough albums with “Fleetwood Mac” in 1975 and “Rumours” in 1977, both of which reached No. 1 and sold millions of copies.
“A strong argument can be made that without Welch’s contributions, Fleetwood Mac would not have been in the position to make ‘Rumours’ in 1977,” Cleveland Plain Dealer critic Michael Norman wrote in 1998. “Welch pushed the band toward the pop mainstream in albums such as ‘Future Games,’ ‘Bare Trees,’ and ‘Heroes Are Hard to Find.’ ”...| (June 2012, Washington Post.)
I'm sorry, but I have speak up. No doubt Welch helped shape the band's sounds, but he went down a different road with Heroes Are Hard to Find and not for the better. The album didn't have that lead guitar sting FM was famous for. I thought Christine saved the record with some of her soft ballads she was famous for. Bob sounded tired and dull. Music is subjective so it's just my opinion, but there is no denying the man who was responsible for shaping the band's new sound was Danny Kirwan. Go back to 1970 with Kiln house and listen to Jewel Eyed Judy and Station Man. Danny led FM out of the blues. I disagree with Mr. Norman and his assertion it was Welch who pushed the band towards POP mainstream in 71-72. Danny wrote and produced nine songs from Future Games and Bare Trees if you include Trinity. Bob wrote and produced four. Danny's impact was much greater than Bob's by a long shot. Perhaps the writer was thinking of Sentimental Lady, but one song doesn't mean he transcended FM. Welch was an excellent writer and Mystery To Me is the album Bob should hang his hat on, along with Chrissy of course. However, Mystery To Me wouldn't have been the same without Bob Weston's guitar work.
Bob Welch was not a member of Fleetwood Mac in its "earliest days," a blues turned blues-rock band, which formed in 1967. Welch joined the band in 1971, replacing Jeremy Spencer and having lost Peter Green earlier, both due to unfortunate reasons. Welch was a major contributor to what's referred to as Fleetwood Mac's "transitional era," a hard turn to pop, before the Rhiannon era with Nicks and Buckingham.

Bob didn't care for Bare Trees. He thought the music was bleak and attributed it to Danny's angst in his writing. Sounds awfully bitter to me. Child of Mine discusses Danny's father, but it's a kick a$$ tune. Danny's Chant bleak? Bare Trees? Sunny Side of Heaven? Bob must be referring to Dust, but Danny didn't write the song. He arranged the tune and turned out to be one of Danny's finer moments. Perhaps it was because Danny contributed 5 songs, while Bob had only two. Yea, that makes more sense. @@sturs100

I was very fortunate to know Bob and Wendy Welch in the early 1990s when he was touring with Avenue M, a group of talented young musicians from the Phoenix area, and Wendy had taken charge as its road manager. I always admire their resilience, especially Wendy, and it is a shame this video skips over their relationship. From what I knew of them, they healed their demons together and endeavored to have a successful working and professional relationship doing what they both loved.

Bob Welch along with Jethro Tull's Glenn Cornick and the Nazz' Thom Mooney, made a fantastic hard rock album under the band name Paris in 1974, with a followup in 75 which contained the Sales brothers who would go on to form Bowie's Tin Machine...

I had a Bob Welch album featuring Sentimental Lady in the 80"s I even played the song while Djing on a college radio station about 1986. I'm just now learning he was a member of Fleetwood Mac.
Fleetwood Mac never even acknowledged him at their RRHOF induction, much less invite him. Bob was key in helping transition Fleetwood Mac from the all blues band they started out as to the super successful commercial group they would become in the seventies.
I love Bob Welch but as you mentioned in the video I wasn't aware of him being in Fleetwood Mac. I loved his solo work and of course found out he was a former member of FM. Hypnotized, Hot Love Cold World are two of my favorites. I think he could have done more music if he just would have given himself some more time. He must have been so tortured inside to check out by his own doing. Another big loss to the music world. I hope he's resting easy now.

A very interesting overview. I counted SEVERAL errors in the information given though. Some were SO obvious too. You'd think that the folks producing such a video would get the facts right! Imagine what people would say if a band ... like Fleetwood Mac ... had this amount of glaring errors in their music !!! I met Bob backstage at a Van Halen concert in Phoenix, told him how much I loved his song "Hypnotized".
I actually like the years he was with FM. Has a distinct voice. Also when Danny Kirwan and Christine Mcvie had a couple of good albums with the band after Green left.
I feel he should have stayed with Fleetwood Mac but as a solo artist he will always be more remembered. Sentimental Lady I have often heard but never knew who sang it. RIP Bob Welch

As many have said the first 6 minutes were not about Bob. But he ends it on a ? No. He left fMac and did quite well. I didn't know about early days and the bottle. But I did read of his heroin trubs later on. I knew a guy a lot like him also in the biz. And both had serious addictive personalities and they needed attention. Sad of course. I am totally against his suicide as I am an extreme chronic pain sufferer. You gotz to count your blessings man. I can only stand for a couple of minutes. Still, it's something. His solo songs, Hypnotized especially for me and Sentimental Lady wowed the ladies. I knew many women who loved that. How Mick and Stevie are still around only God knows. But $$ does help when you're a mess. It buys you time and help. Thanks for the tunes Bob.
I never liked Fleetwood Mac but I did like Bob Welches solo music. He was way better then them. He had a nice voice.

@@FactsVerse: The Bob Welch version of "Sentimental Lady" just may be my favorite song of all time. There's something about it that moves me in a way that other songs don't. It casts a spell on me each time I hear it, taking me to another realm, and making me want to be a better man, so it has a magical quality as well.

I lost count of the number of factual errors about half way through.
It's a rather confused account of the history of Fleetwood Mac; Bob Welch was not a founding member and his involvement in/with the group did not coincide with either of its two discrete successful periods.
Yes, there are several factual errors in this clip. No, that was not a photo of Stevie Nicks with George Harrison. George Harrison's first wife (and later wife and ex-wife of Eric Clapton) Patty Boyd and Mick Fleetwood's first wife Jenny Boyd are sisters. Basically, for a short while Mick Fleetwood was an in-law to George Harrison and Eric Clapton shortly thereafter.

Here's what I think..this video would be better if you focused more on Bob Welch and some of his music/songs rather than a dry overview of the band.

This video does a good job of covering Bob’s background. I was in high school when he had the three hits in 1978-79 (Sentimental Lady,Ebony Eyes and Precious Love). Unfortunately yet another sad ending to a once successful performer and musician. May he RIP.

I became a Fleetwood mac Fan in 1971 Future games , Bare Trees, Penquin Mystery to me , and Heros are hard to find Are my very favorite albums , Due to Bob Welches songs Mainly.
I bought Both Paris albums , and all his solo albums , Loved his Guitar and writing style and voice !!! Silver heels is one of my favorites from The FM heroes album !

It's obvious the person that made this video didn't looking Bob's recordings, because there is little mention of them. Bob was a great song writer, singer, and guitarist. I followed him when he was in Fleetwood Mac and loved his solo albums.
He had 2 great songs that I put against any others with Ebony Eyes, and Sentimental Lady, both were classics.

It's very difficult for people who work in bands to avoid addiction to tobacco, alcohol and drugs=legal/illegal. Why? Bars. They make you, the artist, push what they serve, on their fans: alcohol. Bars sold and continue to sell so much junk to push on their customers, in addition to alcohol. They became very unhealthy venues to work in. Also, sports arenas and stadiums. How odd as they initially served to host sporting events, that are supposed to be healthy, right? Tobacco smoke was everywhere inside until the Clean Indoor Act, pushed on the public in every venue where you could smoke. Dr. Sigmund Freud was one of the biggest pushers of tobacco, and was so addicted he couldn't quit even after having over thirty cancer surgeries....that failed to protect him. All this garbage was broadcast on TV, radio, in schools, hospitals, you name it. Then you have the street drug crowd waiting to hook you up with the next illegal drug. It's easy to blame the victims. Bob Welch was NOT a founding member of Fleetwood Mac. The band started in 1967... Bob Welch didn't come on board until 1971.. and stayed until the end of 1974.. having recorded 5 albums with the band.
