When removing u-joints I usually start by cutting out the center with an acetylene torch, as my grandpa taught me to do. Pretty messy but highly effective, could probably do it with a new cutting wheel. I find they get in a bit of a bind when pressing them together, so I like to knock the center with a punch in each direction to push the caps out as far as possible against the clips.

I use my air chisel with a flat blade to remove the wheel hub I just wish you a screwdriver between the Hub and then starter Gap or I can put the air chisel blade in and takes the Hub out without damaging them . When doing axle joints heat is your best friend and a ball joint press too and most Jeep guys have one but if you have to use the hammer time way lol do it on the concrete as the wood bench absorbs the impact from the hammer. Great job Dan or Tin man with all the anti seize ,that stuff is what Keeps are made of.

Beware of the split year hubs. The XJ 1999 to July and 1999 to December is a different size ( thx again Chrysler). Looks like you used a different size in your video.
Search for "Jeep XJ split year hub" and see the difference. Mine plagued me until i found the issue and educated UAP NAPA.
These hubs are routinely distributed in the wrong size.

You could have save a lot of time and work if you bought your joints at a non franchise parts store. They usually have a press and for 20 bucks an axle will press new joints for you. And taking hub out of knuckle, loosen the 3 bolts about an eight inch and hammer those to brake the hub out. Sometimes dropping tie rods give a lot more working area.

I took my xj in to have the local shop check it over to see if they can figure out where the death wobble is coming from. They told me it has bad u joints. Could that cause DW? im new to owning an xj and ive been doing all my own smaller repairs but this is one of those things that im having a shop do. I went into a shop before and they told me my blown steering stabilizer was causing it, which obviously wasnt what was causing it. Really hoping i can get it fixed.

    • @ProjectDanH

unlikely that u joints would cause death wobble. definitely not a steering stabilizer either. hubs, ball joints and wallowed out track bar mounts are top 3, or a combination of them.

Let's face it, the Jeep division of Chrysler sucks. Old technology. No parts support just a few years after the models are manufactured, poor design and engineering. Well, old design and engineering. And really stupid design and engineering. Like offering 2 seperate 4 wheel drive systems. One that works, and one that doesn't. And the CV axles between the two are only off 1 inch. So you must have all seperate tools and dies to manufacture the two CV joints, but they are only 1 inch in length apart? How stupid. It's a wonder Chrysler is in business at all. And kinda think they are an American embarrassment of a car company. As a mechanic I'm just going to refuse to work on Chrysler/Jeep Products. They suck.
