Back in the 70's I saw fields and fields of them in Cape Breton Island, NS, Canada. They covered the floor of a flooded forest. I think it was a provincial or nation park. They were growing on a mat of Sphagnum moss. This place was huge acres and acres of the moss and sundews with a manmade wooden walkway through it going from tree island to tree island.
Hi Rachel , I appreciate fascination with with these plants . I too Share a passion for CPS. One point of interest I have Rachel is growing D. filliformus Floridana red and white flower . These grow along the Florida Pan Handle . Their seeds need no cold stratification . And grow really . Summer temperatures range 90 s to Feb . Average low 60 •F . These are Ideal plants for my indoor terrarium. Or out side plants as well . Good luck and happy growing all .
Iv tried venus fly traps no luck growing them, never tried sundew but iv had a sarracenia for 3 years and it's been flowering for the first time this week. I saved it from a supermarket. I'm in the uk so I have to keep them in the house.
Hi Rachael! I agree that _filiformis_ is a great sundew! With its tall stature and glistening leaves they are unusually pretty and showy for a sundew! What I can tell you is that purebred filiformis, while robust, is not hardy enough to survive here in Stockholm, Sweden. Something which _does_ survive the winter here is a cross-breed between _D. filiformis_ and _D. intermedia_ (a native to Sweden), which I believe is known as _D. x hybrida._ They are about half as tall compared to filiformis, but otherwise they retain that same attractive thread-like appearance. I'd love to see some more insights and spotlights of these plants, especially the ones that are native to NA. Cheers from Sweden!
Basically Drosera filiformis is the easiest temperate sundew. (and American native) And Drosera capensis is the easiest tropical sundew. Easiest one to grow that doesn't need any kind of dormancy. That one is definitely weedy. if you have carnivorous plants you barely need to try and grow it, they come up everywhere.
I love the species spotlights! You inspired me to try my hand at these amazing plants and couldn't help bringing my first home. My Nepenthes ventrata is doing amazing and I was so close to picking up one of these sundews. I might have to now!
Great video, I have some D.filiformis ssp filiformis too, nice to grow outside in a bog like yours. I have subspecies like D.f..tracyi and "Californ.Sunset" ,too, but these are not good for outside in winter (I assume). I always kept them inside when its colder and it always worked.
Hi Rachel, I just found this channel- we follow your other one and live outside of Hbg. Have you discovered the Pilea plant yet? Is has become one of my favorites!
Great video! I just started a bog in the overflow of my koi pond. I seeded it with some moss but I plan on placing a big plant order when things clear up. This is now on the list.
I dont see why you had to split the channels but anyway.....you choose what you wanna watch right? ...Anyway, Its winter here in the Western Cape , which means Flora season....its our rainy season....all the iceplants , succulents, and wild flowers out.....Best time of year here! Do you know the Cape floristic region?
Would you have any suggestions on where we could purchase these online hes online? Like I've said before I live in Traverse City Michigan and they're not plentyful at all here!! 🙄😁
I would definitely watch more species spotlights on the plants.

Congrats! It must be happy!
Barry Evans you can grow them outside in the UK.
Sarracenia will do fine outside almost anywhere in the UK

Pleas do more carnivorous plants! And sundew care! I had a sundew for a while but it got a fungal infection 🥺
I love Drosera Spatulata. Cute little pudgy leaves of death.

Maybe Pennsylvania residents will benefit this plant from spotted lanternflies
great video Rachel! are there any sundews that don't need to hibernate over the winter?
Yes quite a few tropical species out there
You have such a green thumb, while I have a moldy black one!
Just gotta find the plants that like your level of care and conditions:)
@@Plantaholic -- I have....fake ones!
I think carnivorous plants are cool, I used to have a Venus fly trap.
I've been waiting for this!!!!! Where do you order your plants? I know you mentioned a place in Maryland.
Carnivorous plant nursery and i am also in the mid-atlantic carnivorous plant society
@@Plantaholic I will look there!!! I am ready to start my first bog garden!
Would you have any suggestions on where we could purchase these online hes online? Like I've said before I live in Traverse City Michigan and they're not plentyful at all here!! 🙄😁
Are Drosera Filiformis tolerant of really hot zones?
Never heard of a sundew before. Do t hear to often of something that grows in Canada as well as Florida.
Its an incredibly versatile plant
Question(not from my 20) Do you ever collect plants from the wild? And if so any tips?
I do not, especially carnivorous, as most are protected and critically threatened.
GHOTI GUY You shouldn’t collect plants without a permit and land owners permission.
