I love them. I have 25 at least, semi miniatures, trailers and standards. I even have a species plant. My husband built me 2 shelves after there was no more room at the window. I use hanging 4 ft lights which work great, always something blooming which gets me through winter. Just love your second channel as much as your first. Take care.

Love African violets. Remind me of my great grandmother. She always warned not to touch or breathe on her violets. She had a large serving cart with wheels and a couple lights attached, a couple levels just packed full of pots of her violets. Because the cart had wheels, she was able to move them to the optimal spot for sunlight in front of her sliding glass door/window. I bet hubby could have fun making you a cart with wheels.
Just sayin’. 😉 Thanks again, Rachel!

Violets were my very first houseplants when I moved out into my first home. Thank you for sharing your tips on propagation and soil. I also did leaf propagation but in water! I covered a glass of water with wax paper using a rubber band to hold it on the glass, poke a hole in the center of the wax paper and stick the leaf in. Roots form within a couple weeks and then can be planted.

Hey Rachel! Just wanted to say that I have a great connection to African Violets. My grandma was a huge gardener.... Her big thing was African Violets. She had a great plant rack in the basement for growing and trying to preserve some rare ones.. I was too young to learn from her, but when she died, I took one home. Unfortunately I killed it... Would love to get into it again in her memory.

African violets are my favorite house plants. Good memories from my Grandma. She had several varieties, but I was always fascinated with her window sill over the kitchen sink full of china tea cups and saucers with teacup varieties in them. I begged to help with dishes, so I could stand on the little wooden stool and study the pretty plants and beautiful teacups. Plants carry so many great memories for a lot of us. 💕
P/S I've missed the cats interjecting their opinions into your videos.

We propagate our violets first by placing them in a cup of water. I use cling wrap over top with an elastic and then poke a hole. Place leaf stem in the water. After a little bit a root will grow and then I pot. Works great every time.

Definitely one of my favorites to keep as well. I've even had some flowering in a North facing window- it also gets a decent amount of reflected light from the surrounding buildings.

  • @Shaden0040

If you can get it from a local nursery, get some rooting powder, powdered form of a plant rooting hormone, and dip the cut stem in it to coat the cut end and a centimeter or so with the powder. This forces the cutting to make new roots and aids in its uptake of water faster than just a cutting without the rooting powder. I've had good success with it with the rooting powder for all sorts of cuttings.

I get called a little ol' lady for my African violets collection, lol. To be honest, I actually call myself that; everyone really likes my violets. I love haw many colors there are and there wonderful fuzzy leaves, don't you? That big one has some really lovely red hues on the undersides. Thanks for sharing your collection. Maybe someday you'll be able to reconsider that eastern window?

The only plant I actually have not killed! Throw it in a double-walled pot with African violet soil, water the outer pot (NEVER pour water on top, you'll kill it!), water sparingly, and put it in a window. It's that easy!

My Granny also kept them. Unfortunately she was never patient enough to let them rebloom. If they quit blooming for awhile she would throw them away and buy more. I kept them growing up and propagated them.

Love African Violets! Definitely going to try your method of propagation. The plant I have now is doing well, but the leaves are starting to grow over the edge of the pot (I bought it as a full grown plant and it is in the pot it came in) Should I leave it as is? You mention they don’t like to be repotted- can they outgrow their pots? THANK YOU! Love the new channel!!

    • @Plantaholic

They can out grow their pot but you usually wait until they are a third or so larger than their pot to move them.they canreally pout about it

I always kill african violets Y_Y I forget to water them just a bit late and the whole plant dries up and goes crispy so fast. I want to try again with a self watering pot but even with those plants that are more drought tolerant do better for me. My succulents and orchids grow fantastically for me. Orchids are my favorite houseplant.
