Watch in HD!!! This is a play through for the ending of 'Singularity', 'Part 6: Here Comes The Sun' by Devin Townsend.
Last year (2018), I had the unexpected privilege of being one of the recording drummers for Devin Townsend's latest record, titled 'Empath'. I really can't put into words how amazing the experience was to work with someone such as Devin, as well as all of the other amazing people/musicians on the record. It was very surreal to say the least, and I can't thank Devin enough for letting me contribute to the album.
The record is a great blend between three drummers; myself, Morgan Agren, and Samus Paulicelli. We all played a different role throughout, and its pretty awesome to hear the different styles of playing. Singularity is a very long song, and there are numerous sections that were performed/recorded by all three of us. So I decided to do a video for one of the sections that I was on, which is the ending. I hope you enjoy!
I plan on uploading videos for a few of the other songs that I performed on, which I'll put out slowly over the next couple of months.
I am available for session work. Please feel free to reach out with any inquiries at AnupSastryDrums@gmail.com.
I'm also available for lessons. Please feel free to reach out regarding lessons at AnupSastryLessons@gmail.com.

Fucking amazing dude. Ohhh Yurrrrr
Tend to agree 👍😘🇸🇪
Sex.
Oh Yurrrr!
Fancy seeing you here!! love your drumming bro, you're the best 💕
@@Dextronaut1Fun fact if you didn't know, he did also work on this album. Listen to the song Hear Me on the same album.
From 3:30 on dude's completely shifted, spiritually and physically, into maximum overdrive....... but there was never a change in volume, pitch, accent of notes, etc. That's the kind mastery of self-control that sends a mortal chill down your spine.....
Devin does something to you...I don't know what but....There it is...
This is so CLEAN!!! Awesome stuff! :D
👀
Thank you Anup for contributing to this masterpiece! You did a great job
@@smithsmith9708 dude come on :D play nice
@@smithsmith9708 hahhahahaa what?
Gotta say even though devins new album was a recording mastering etc amazing...personally i was disappointed didnt really care for it...found it boring really...but ill prob give it another listen or 2 sometimes a album u take a big fart corn riddled shit on at first then the next spin or 2 your ears open up to it...idk may not happen cause on this playthrough i enjoy watching drummer this guy is insane awsome...i was bored almost semi irritated listened to devins lyrics just didnt grab me by the balls give em a good yank and spit on the tip and sry thats what ive come to expect ziltoid 1 & 2 are so good this is ehhh to crappy for me
@@smithsmith9708 u r such a fucking homophobe dude shut up
@@spazatron-uu4kb definitely give it another few listens. I felt the same at first, now I can't stop listening to it. By far my favorite Devin Townsend album.
I simply cannot get through this without welling up with pure emotion...chills, goosebumps, pupil dilation, tears, and one huge exhalation after the final note rings out. Every brilliant musician involved in the creation of Devin's opus magnum "Empath" is an absolute inspiration. Anup, your commitment to the true meaning of this song shines through in your brilliant performance.
100 percent agree with you on all the emotions felt in this song. From the first time I heard it
This is one of the greatest albums I've ever heard and these last 4 minutes are just stellar. Congrats on being part of a masterpiece, Anup, you killed it.
Thanks a lot!
I couldn’t agree more. I’ve never heard anything like this. Just brilliant Anup.
I agree 100%. Empath is a masterpiece and your work on there is Stellar!
First time I heard this track - especially through to the end - all I could think was WOW when it finished. Then I played it again immediately
Oh hai Dan! Totally agree. This last 4 minutes tears me up every time.
I'm pissed that I can't give a million likes to this! Absolutely amazing!
Singularity is really a masterpiece
The drums at the final part are on point 🔥🔥
To be fair, the drums are on point for 0:00:00--2:03:00 of the 2-CD-version of Empath
But yeah, this part of Singularity did stand out as exceptionally awesome
Writing rhythm parts has always been one of Devy's stronger suits. Just look at the stuff on SYL's Alien or DTP's Addicted. It's heavily rhythm-oriented.
I am a repeat viewer of this video. It gets me every time.
The top of this last section in drums part make me feel like a tabla routine played on the drum set , this is so great and Anup is playing each note so clean and detach , he make you understand that each note have the same importance in the construction of the song , rejoice , love , peace , we are all together here on planet earth and universe .
I've never seen/heard so much emotion in something so proggy. That's crazy. This didn't disappoint whatsoever.
There's a shit load of emotion in prog. Where have you been?
Well, it's not a perfect correlation, but the proggier music gets, the less mainstream it tends to be. And emotion in music has a lot to do with how we've learned via society to feel about it (minor = sad, major = happy, dissonance = anxiety, etc.). So, our learned associations get challenged by unfamiliar rhythms and we might not know how to feel about it. This song/section has wacky polymetric drumming, but it still achieves a really high level of emotion. I listen to lots of prog that I think is emotional, but the drums in this song are particularly amazing.
Anup puts *all* the stank into his performances. Gotta love it.
I must have watched this a hundred times in the last few years, and it makes me so happy every time
Congrats on getting to be a part of this, Anup. It's an amazing album. Hey Devin!!!!
Thank you!
Probably the most complicated rhythm I've ever heard in 4/4 time signature. You absolutely nailed it.
I was trying to figure this shit out and the answer was right in front of me
@MorbidManMusic agree tho
I could watch this a million times and not get bored of it. The power he plays with in this song is fantastic and seeing him lose himself in the music is just fantastic. So awesome…thanks for the video!
Thanks a lot for the kind words! Really appreciate it!
OUT
FUCKING
STANDING
So glad Devin’s work introduced me to your playing
Couldn’t agree more. Nailed it!
Anup is one of the best players out there right now bud, and he has far better material out there then this song.
dude you should listen to the first Intervals' EP where he plays as drummer, they are unbelievable
About once a week I come back to this video to watch it again, it has so much happy energy. One of the top 5 drum videos of all time ever. Spectacular!
Thank you! Much Appreciated!
that feeling when not skipping a lesson in mathematics at school
Anup, I’ve been a Devin fan since the early SYL days, and have traveled across the country to see him perform. Empath and Singularity in particular hit my soul in a very special place. THANK YOU for your (very gifted) part in this musical journey. I hope to see you play someday and shake your hand in person.
This gives me pride and confidence in my identification to this genre of music.
This is literally my favorite section on the entire album, the drums are soooo massive. The "through the storm" part gives me shivers EVERY time I listen to this.
Incredible!
I wish I could give this a thousand thumbs up.
There is something about this part of Singularity ... the 1:16 point with the incredible syncopation is stunning ... then starting at about 2:25 (after the goosebumps) it gives me an intense feeling of gratitude and optimism. That's insane. I just feel it! Bravo Devin and bravo Anup!!
Holy shit yes please! Here Comes The Sun is among the most beautiful pieces of music ever written imo and you did an amazing job!
1:16 oof thats a chunky little pattern right there i love it
That took me like 80 gazillion takes to finally get one for video that was ok... haha. Such a weird part.
@@asdrummer2008 I've been a lover of weird grooves and meters for many years but I can't even wrap my brain around what the patterns might be for that part! Phenomenal job.
Haah that part is a huge fuck you to the people aspiring to cover this song. It’s amazing.
@@Boomer.Roberts Yeah I'm trying to count it and my head explodes. groove of the year
@@gabespalding8964 the groove that built empires, and would eventually come to destroy all civilization
Some of the greatest drumming I’ve ever seen. Unbelievable
Thanks for the kind words! \m/
It has happened! The titans of Prog Metal have come together to make a masterpiece! Anup, Samus, and jazzy Agren, all playing with Devin to make an awesome album. What a treat! Great job Anup! You killed it on this track!
I love Empath from start to finish whenever I sit down to enjoy it on my rig. But “Singularity” is such an amazing piece of work......I love the journey of it and the end section that you play here is my favourite part of it......it’s soul stirring. And I still come back here to watch this on a regular basis.....just love your playing here.
Thank you Anup for sharing your talents on Empath.......you absolutely killed it.
Watched it like 50 times now. So beautiful sounding.
Awesome Anup. May you achieve bigger milestones. Devin Townsend has given you the sticks... what more!
So tight. So much power. Like perfectly tuned thunder. Positively Xerxes.
10 out of 10.
Probably cried 11 out of the first 20 times I heard it.
I can’t listen to the end of this song without getting goosebumps. Just amazing!
The undisputed, "human anthem." Congrats!!
One of the best drum video on youtube. Man... that part of Singularity.. Makes me cry every time.
You don't play with that intensity if you don't feel the music. Perfect drum part for a great song, and flawless performance. Absolutely beautiful.
One of my favourite drummers for sure.
YAAAASSSSS!!! Singularity is my favourite song from Empath and the drums in the ending are just epic!
Some of the cleanest drumming I've ever heard.
What a beast of drumming, everything is perfect here
Hitting with conviction! Shine on!
Best part of the song by far, could listen on loop for hours it's just so good. Amazing job man seriously!
That's my post below!
I'm back baby.
Anup you are bloody amazing!
Wow ! love to see this high school drumming! what a skilled performance!
Anup, I absolutely love how you invest yourself - and just "live" in the song. Extremely dynamic and well sounding.
Devin Townsends music hasn't hit me this hard since Terria...just realized cause Gene Hoglan was drumming on that album. This pattern is ridiculous, can't get enough
I'm very proud to have this album. Amazing composer, amazing musicias, as Anup
Something about this song always makes me want to cry
Still loving!👍🇸🇪😘
Maryland represent!!!
That is my favorite part of the entire album! It gives me goose bumps every time I listen to it. Anup, your playing is f'ing brilliant man! I can see why Devin wanted you on Empath. And now I'm a fan. Time to go discover more music with Anup on the drums.
Song of the decade.
There's no lack of velocity with any of these hits! Anup straight up crushes this!
I am so glad that devin had you play the drums on his album. I love you both. You are both such talented artists
Love this album and your amazing crushing beats on it!
Just watching this makes me smile
It's amazing you're able to keep the 4/4 timing in your head while running through this. Best part of the song IMO!
Good grief that snare sounds amazing
like a pistol.
Being with with a cannon of an arm.
Cheers to you, Morgan and Samus. The drums were amazing on this record!
This is my favorite part of the album!!! Great job!
every video of yours are unique in every way......its always fun to listen
I have watched this over 50 times - the power of the song and the drumming - just amazing work - bravo
These drum videos really add to the magic of the track. Thanks for sharing Anup!
The movement and articulation plus every snare hit is an atomic bomb
This is pure drum blizz!
This is insanely good!!! So awesome!
Outstanding playing, bro! Love this mix too.
The purest light for my soul. I feel evermore alive after this video.
Simply Incredible.
Tears of passionate joy here.
Listening to this genuinely makes me emotional - incredible job
I just witnessed drumming brilliance.... wow! Beautiful and inspiring.
3:23 your incredible powerful groove, and maaan your accents.... everytime you make me cry as you make us follow this wonderful wow power ! Thank You !!!
all along the song, the dynamism, your groove and accents are soooooo great and powerful. Just on time but with power to get speed aspiration and a wise placement that makes it groove. You surely have worked a lot your instruments, and yes we can here your expression really well. Thanks once more, I re-re-replay it :p
and the tear comes at 3:46 exactly ;)
That snare made me pregnant. Holy hell dude, this is PHENOMENAL!
Best comment 😂
I'm so happy this exists
Best song (or part of a song) on the best album I've heard in years! This is incredible!!
My God!!! Breathtakingly good dude. So amazing seeing you involved in whats turned out to be one of my fav albums ever. Reeeeeeeeeeeeessssssspect!
This whole album is amazing, and this part in particular is one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever laid down. Simply breathtaking, thanks for posting this! I love it, and your drumming is outstanding here!
That is right as i can read here and out this music is pure emotions, geats musicians with huges inspirations, the Zappa filiation is here!
Absolutely amazing!
Such a complex drum play , awesome job💯🙏⚡
holy holy holy cow. That was INSANE!!!!!
I really don't think anyone could have done a better job, this is so good.
on one hand, the artistry and nuance here is just breathtaking
on the other, I am crossing "Sastry's Drum Heads" off the list of things I would ever want to be reincarnated as
Best snare sound I've heard in a while
This album, this song and this guy is not a joke. Respect =)
wow... awesome power and technique. Amazing.
Pretty goddamned epic, sir!!! That’s my favorite track on the album, and seriously one of Dev’s most uplifting tracks for me. Well-played!
Anup, you destroy! Your drum parts fit the song perfectly. Well done, sir.
After listening and watching RUclips videos since the album’s release, I can definitively say Anup is my favorite of the 3 drummers present on the albums. Just his overall approach appeals to me most
Beautiful drumming! Outstanding!
Glorious!
here we are on another level of rhythmic conception. because the hard part is being creative to the point of conceiving this rhythm, not playing it. probably many nowadays can play it, but no one would have thought of it. this is art
Definitely one of the catchiest drum parts in the entire album. 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Dude, you really feel the music. Amazing drumming.
First off all, this album and the drumming on it is just incredible. It is rare for an album to make it into my "masterpiece" list upon first listen. Empath has achieved that! Thanks for showing how you play this drum part. Now I want to challenge myself to learn it too!
Never have drums been told so hard.
Stunning!
Excellent playing, interesting and fun rhythms, sweet ghost notes, and ❤️ super fun drummer faces!
