Of course they are. If they weren't which was the meaning of composing drum parts? I only said that when he plays live he doesn´t play the exact same way everytime.
Check out Blake Richardson of BTBAM. He does these amazing fills that descend to second floor tom and all the way back to the snare. A bit heavier and weirder music though.
There aren't a lot of drummers that I could just watch for hours at a time like this. And coming from a guitarist, that says something. Gavin is just a truly inspirational player.
Gavin is a musicians musician, like the rest of Porcupine Tree’s alumni. The only people I tell about Gavin are my three other friends who are in to prog rock
Yes and as it is with most surgeons, they have no or hardly any emotion or feeling. He is a cold player and seems quite weak, and of course most drummer like this have insecurity complexes and always seem to have something to prove with all the fancy fills they try to fit in. It has nothing to do with the music but rather feeding their own Ego. Read my book, you'll find it in the brain entrainment column on Amazon. It's called The Radio Mind by Lawrence Mailbrook & Rob Chaser. It's very good and teaches all about Narcissistic types like GH.
Gavin is not only overflowing with chops, but he’s also extremely musical. A rare mix. And, his playing is just full of surprises ! He never gets boring, ever. One of my favorite players.
IMHO he is the best drummer of all times. It's not just about drum technique (watch the final double stroke again, again, again, again, whatch those moeller on the snare, watch those flams, etc), it's about sound quality, musicality, groove design, music innovation, execution style. Perfect for your ears and your eyes. He is Gavin Harrison.
I love this guy. Unique voice. Very creative. Usually his drum tracks are quite busy but NEVER overplays. I have immense respect for his work. A class act on his own.
Gavin said in another video "technique impresses him, but doesn't move him. His playing here moves you. Such grace and style. Edit after 24 hours and watching this video several times. I'll start with I am not a drummer so bear with me. There are three distinct sections here, roughly put, the opening, the middle ambient section, and the closing. The opening is strong and pulls you into the song with a grooving hard beat. The ambient section is reminiscent of Phil Collins but way beyond Collins in phrasing. The mood set by the tone of his drums is other worldly. You could drop all the other instruments and never lose the song through out the middle section because his phrasing and tone is so melodic. Post ambient section he starts grooving, and what a fricken ride. There is so much going on but you never feel out of sync with him and the fills are incredibly creative, not a simple tom roll or such but massive snare and cymbal runs that float over the beat. This is so slick you need a cigarette and a shower after watching this. Seriously impressive on all levels.
It is always an absolute pleasure to watch this artist in awe. I have never experienced such an incredibly ingenious symbiosis of power and culture. I love his style.
l'm one of the 100 zillion people who play guitar, above whom there are plenty who have set the technique/chops bar somewhere on Mt.Olympus, but ever since he joined Porcupine Tree in 2002...this is the guy l turn to for sheer inspiration. l listen to & study other high caliber drummers, but Gavin Harrison is in a league all his own. Surely the musicians he supports have to be incredibly thankful, if not humbled, being able to play on the same stage with him. You're a very fortunate man, Bruce.
Greg Williams I’ve been fortunate to see Gavin play twice. Once with Pineapple Thief and at a drum clinic with 100 people. He’s an articulate, down to earth guy. As a drummer myself, I have much respect for his gifts of musical talents.
Right, Rob...Guthrie & Gavin's musical genius operates at the same frequency. lf GH would have played on "The Raven That Refused To Sing" project, you'd have had your wish (although Marco Minnemann did play surreal, monster drums on that album). l think what l appreciate most about Gavin is that he's presented with a song & manages to contribute nothing but perfect ideas to it. He possesses a song...in the best way.
In four and a half minutes is the whole rhythm "philosophy" with precision, devotion and grooving technical diversity at the highest level. The groove artist Mr. Harrison makes the rhythm alive, much more he makes it alone sound like MUSIC. Incredible!
Awesome work, Gavin is the best prog drummer I've listened to. I still don't understand the 200 people who gave a thumb down to this video, it's pure resentment.
Gavin is one of the top ten in the planet! Clean, fast, armonic, melodic, tecnical and hit when he needs to hit! Him and Dave Weckl are the all around beast drummers!
Always a blast to watch Gavin play. Every motion he makes is borderline effortless a his touch is so consistent yet natural. Looking forward to this album!
Gavin is not only a technical and creative maniac. He also always "right" on how apply fills and how build a drum composition. He is on top of the drumming foodchain.
Another stunning performance from GH. Crisp snare, tight kick, 5 perfectly tuned toms, wonderful cymbal colors, and an amazing command of 4 limbs. Well done GH.
Not sure “effortless” does it justice. There is probably only one way to get this good. He must have worked his ass of for many years. his talent is his commitment to his passion.
It's a joy to recognize his architectural perspective on drumming. You can literally see how he's enjoying to search every time for the perfect fitting embellishment to serve the music.
I’ve watched this clip 20-30 times over the last couple of weeks... just watching how well Gavin plays those drums, how good his drums sound and the general buildup in the song... incredible!
Though it is difficult to select the best (insert profession/skill/talent) of all time, I personally wouldn't hesitate to name this man as the best drummer. Precision, technique, creativity, musicality, power... He simply has it all.
Wowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww....not over or underplayed but perfect...listen to it with your eyes closed and follow those time changes and articulations....beautiful!!!!!
Brandon Kain he amazingly grooves back and forth between them effortlessly. I haven’t broken them down yet, and I almost feel it’s blasphemy to do so before the first 10 listens, as your mind just wants to take it all in first :)
So far I watched him 15 times live. 13 times with porcupine tree 1 time was a clinic in Hanover Germany Last time with the pineapple thief. My drum hero beside Simon Phillips and Vinnie
This is definitely my favorite song by Pineapple Thief I've heard yet! Gavin's ability to write such perfectly fitting grooves and fills is even more impressive than his amazing chops. Every single drum hit and cymbal hit is exactly where it needs to be and serves a purpose. Simply mind blowing!
One of the most inspiring musicians to ever walk the planet, at least for me personally, and I'm a guitar player haha. Huge respect for his dedication to the craft!
those drums are so well composed wow, i love how he's not overchopping instead letting the music come together and assisting the music with the drums very clean. I think every Musician would love to have him as a drummer :)
I'm only a piano player with very low interest in drumming, but I can't stop watching this guy play. So musically interesting. It feels incredibly free, but so amazingly tight and solid. The sound is just perfection.
Gavin Harrison's drumming is very "high resolution"... As you look closer and closer, more and more detail emerges. Absolutely brilliant drummer.
Better than the best. Bet.
Like he’s weaving a layered painting …
The reason I think he is the best and what puts him over the top is how perfectly accurate and crispy he is.
He's very sharp....just like the late Mr Peart@@gagelindell271
@@peterream9437 Exactly!
Man he is a legend.. the most impressive thing about him is that he is not repetitive. His creativity is on another level.
and i cant beileve he remembers all the subtle variations for the different songs and... I cant remember where i keep my keys for five minutes.
for real, the hardest part of coming up with parts is remembering it all lol, I should really get back into reading music, that'd probably help
Gavin actually improvises a lot in his playing. If you watch two different versions of the same song live, you'il notice. Check it out!
No 3 bars are exactly the same
Of course they are. If they weren't which was the meaning of composing drum parts? I only said that when he plays live he doesn´t play the exact same way everytime.
He is literally the best drummer of our time
So good. He literally bridges the gap between Porcupine Tree and Pineapple Thief. The two PTs that make me smile!
YES!!
porcupineapple tree thief
I love when he does ascending fills
That’s one of my favourite things about his use of toms, so tasty!!!
Yeah ever since Gavin I can't stop doing those when I'm playing.
Those are soo good! He calls them "curls"
Check out Blake Richardson of BTBAM. He does these amazing fills that descend to second floor tom and all the way back to the snare. A bit heavier and weirder music though.
RIIIGHHHT
I swear, I could watch Gavin play all day... such a groovy, unique, clean and ultimately inspiring drummer!! Thanks to Vic Firth for the upload!
Gavin is a very tasty drummer. Awesome technique!
Julien Bendel You must not have a job.
Me too...I actually have...no shower, no getting outside...just beers and Gavin....what else do you need?? lol
Even the hardware is grooving
stare Sam I thought I was the only one :)
The left camera too
stare Sam one of the best comments.....EVER!
This man is in a leaque of his own.
Groove, phrazing, timing and feel are mindblowing.
He just plays music.
He was always in control, always in control of this.
Watched pineapple thief in Paris last month. It was the first time I saw the audience shouting a drummer's name more than any other member of a band.
There aren't a lot of drummers that I could just watch for hours at a time like this. And coming from a guitarist, that says something. Gavin is just a truly inspirational player.
Truly inspirational
I´m in the same exact position he's on another level too much detail and never is repeating on something cheers from Costa Rica
Such an underrated drummer. People who enjoy prog rock or are drummers themselves usually know of this masterful man, but the mainstream doesn't.
Good. Don't give him to mainstream. They'll ruin him.
@@PeytonDrums05 nah, Gavin can't be ruined. Has way too much musical personality to be able to suppress or "control"
Mainstream doesn't deserve him.
Gavin is a musicians musician, like the rest of Porcupine Tree’s alumni. The only people I tell about Gavin are my three other friends who are in to prog rock
I don’t think anyone whose ever heard him underrates him. He’s one of the most respected drummers in the world, particularly among drummers.
Simply the most talented prog rock drummer in the world. It is just terrific!
Great Jazz Drummer as well..
Gavin Harrison is like Connor McDavid in hockey, but in DDR era steroids.
I call him the surgeon of the drumming world. So clean, so creative, so groovy...
One of most musical drummers ever
I would not enjoy my surgeon to be creative though
@@jimitsos6 Maybe not groovy either, but that depends

PERFECTLY SAID!!
Surgical precision 💖
Your comment reminded on the Queensryche song Surgical Strike, of which drummer Scott Rockenfield is also the phenomenal musician. :)
Gavin's musicality on drums - incorporating the songs melody into his fills - is unrivaled.
Gavin is not only overflowing with chops, but he’s also extremely musical. A rare mix. And, his playing is just full of surprises ! He never gets boring, ever. One of my favorite players.
One of the best and most complete drummers of our time
He’s one of Simon Philips’ favorite drummers. Say no more.
Gavin is from another planet!
He’s a human fractal generator. You can just keep zooming in and a million new things keep emerging. Most refined drummer of our generation.
I love the comment section in any Gavin Harrison song I see because it confirms the amazement I have with his work. Truly inspirational.
Same here
There's no way he could have made this song any tastier, absolutely brilliant
This guy is just something else... His playing just sounds so musical and smooth. And those ghost notes are to die for!
Never know where he is going and every turn is brilliant!!
IMHO he is the best drummer of all times. well said.
I take it you quite like him then
listen to some Bill Bruford, Brand X Phil Collins, Billy Cobham and Steve Gadd
Probably one of the most musical drummers of all time.
Yes, Gavin!
This song sounds great too. I'm waiting for the full record. Jus one week left. Thanks Kscope for work with these amazing bands.
I love this guy. Unique voice. Very creative. Usually his drum tracks are quite busy

Nice fucking comment
One of the best Drummer in the World.Perfect Play!
I could see Gavin playing all day long. His drumming style is so fluid, clean and elegant that watch him playing is kind of hypnotizing.
It is always an absolute pleasure to watch this artist in awe. I have never experienced such an incredibly ingenious symbiosis of power and culture. I love his style.

I play guitar too and Gavin is such a creative, genius force .. I'd love to see him and Guthrie Govan form a supergroup!

Is Gavin Harrison one of the best modern drummers? I think so
DEF !!!!!!
Definitely up there.
Yes..There are few drummers that compose their parts with such detail.
Marco minnimann...chad wackermann...gavin.
Shantanu Singha
Yes and Mario Duplantier, Matt Garstka and especially Baard Kolstad.
This is my most frequently replayed video for all my RUclips history
I just can’t get enough of this
Incredible tone, taste, touch, creativity: he can do no wrong by me. And still sounding fresh 15 years after I discovered him!
What I love is he PLAYS the drums, he doesn't just play a beat... he is just amazingly talented.
And Gavin does it again! Everytime I hear him playing I want to continue all day listening his technique
I literally keep coming back to this video and it just makes me so happy. Gavin is an inspiration. What a joy to watch his playing.
This is so good! The groove, the creativity, the accuracy.... What a beast!
Gavin has rejuvenated an aging The Pineapple Thief. These are good times.
Holy shit, this man never ceases to impress and amaze me. He makes it look so easy as well.
Djezes! Out of this world! The best by a million miles! Thanks Gavin ❤️
That snare sounds incredible
Darren Williams I believe it’s the Gavin Harrison signature by Sonor, called the “Protean”.
I want one regardless LOL
Worth every penny of its 600$ price tag
You're right ! I wonder if this is the Remo Emperor drumhead ?
DriverRockerGui coated controlled sound.
I love Gavin. Went from one GREAT PT to another! GO PINEAPPLE THIEF
He's not human, makes no sense! Beyond amazing skills!
Awesome work, Gavin is the best prog drummer I've listened to. I still don't understand the 200 people who gave a thumb down to this video, it's pure resentment.
I hope this helps build The Pineapple Theifs fanbase... such a good band
Yeap, they got me! I'm a new fan!
it did. I hate the old tracks but praise the new because gavin’s drumming is just too good
Their first album is great, i would recommend listening to it

Oh it definitely did.
The man is legendary. And the new Pineapple Thief album is excellent. Thank you to Vic Firth for posting this awesome video!!
The complete withe mist are aprox 11 minutes, and is a masterpiece
Gavin may be the best drummer working today. His creativitey, use of displacement and technical precision is amazing.
Simply the best drummer in the whole world. Sound, drumming, fills.. all it's perfect

I'am absolutely speechless.
This guy and his Drumsound und is amazing . 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
It is exhilarating watching a master perform at his best.
One of the best drummers I've seen in my lifetime. Most definitely.
He 's a TECHNICIAN on the drums and makes it look SO easy. I can tell you as a seasoned drummer he is absolutely one of the BEST drummers to live
Those VF sticks hit the drumhead in the same spot consistently. Amazing control. The highest level of consistency and so relevant.

Rock solid playing as always. A delight to watch him play. Awesome :)
Another stunning performance from GH.

Those drums are singing a whole different song! Gavin did it again! Great inspiration from you sir!
Excellent drummer, beautiful kit set up!
Tasty chops and rock solid playing as always
The guy transforms something "simple" in something extremely beautiful and well thought... Is one of the best drummers, no doubt!
extraordinary and so damn beautiful to watch... incredible drummer, can´t wait to see him live for the very first time ... 2 weeks to go.
beagledebby I’m sure you’re going to enjoy every minute, I know I did.
i bet i will. :)
I’ve watched this clip 20-30 times over the last couple of weeks... just watching how well Gavin plays those drums, how good his drums sound and the general buildup in the song... incredible!
Spectacular Gavin, I love watching him playing. He is just soooo good!
Watch this one 4 times in a row. 4-5 again tomorrow. Fluid is the word of the day.
Form 1:20 to 1:40... wow, fantastic, such a pleasure to listen to it, again and again...
The only drum video on Earth that has made me cry.
Fantastic drum set, it looks just beautiful!
Holy shit !! He never repeats a fill or does the same thing twice ! So incredibly clean. What a technician. Thx for sharing !
Amazing preformance! The sonor drums sound killer as always! #sonorfam

I love this song! Damn! Gavin never fails to impress and his kit always sounds amazing, those toms are so melodic and perfectly tuned
Goosebumps all over, what an insane magician.
Wow, Gavin is definitely in a whole different level! Great job VicFirth. Thanks for sharing this amazing performance!
that sound of snare, toms, cumbals, all kit the way Gavin plays, makes me floating high above everything....
1:20 dat fill!! Love the vibes and flow of the song and Gavin's playing.
I like Gavin's style - he plays with feeling without redundant fills, simple. His drumming completes the piece perfectly.
So far I watched him 15 times live.
13 times with porcupine tree
1 time was a clinic in Hanover Germany
Last time with the pineapple thief.
Gavin Harrison Midas! Every note he plays is pure gold.
One of the most inspiring musicians to ever walk the planet, at least for me personally, and I'm a guitar player haha.
Huge respect for his dedication to the craft!
Gavin hypnotized me just one more time
Very good Gavin 👌👏👏👏
Legend! I'll be meeting Gavin this friday, can't wait! ~ Jennifer (drummer for The Compounds)
those drums are so well composed wow, i love how he's not overchopping instead letting the music come together and assisting the music with the drums
very clean.
I think every Musician would love to have him as a drummer :)
Fav. drummer ever!
One of them who speacks with drums to me. Fantastic
melody - drum melody - it's not just an assertion of his - it's real.
I'm only a piano player with very low interest in drumming, but I can't stop watching this guy play. So musically interesting. It feels incredibly free, but so amazingly tight and solid. The sound is just perfection.
Ive been lucky to see alot of good drummers.
THIS guy one of the best all the way around..
It blows my mind how easy it is to feel what he's playing but to play that on drums must take most people a life time
