- Social media marketing is important for any business in our increasingly virtual world. If you’re an avid user of these platforms, opening a social media marketing agency is an appealing prospect. But how do you get started-and what does it take to succeed?
In this interview, we talk to the founder and CEO of Socialistics, a social media marketing agency in the B2B sector. Started as a side hustle, Socialistics.com has quickly grown into mid six-figure business with big-name clients like the Air Force and Habitat for Humanity.
Socialistics isn’t your average social media marketing business. It was founded with the aim of disrupting the space, coming up with new approaches to social media services so they could better serve their clients and give employees more freedom. This emphasis on innovation is one key reason they’ve been able to keep growing while other social media marketing companies flounder.
If you’re wondering how to start a social media marketing agency, you need to watch this interview. We’ll talk about how they’ve maintained their impressive growth even through the challenges of our era and why they’ve chosen a virtual office model over the traditional 9-5 corporate culture.

I run a virtual web dev and digital marketing agency. And the biggest thing I like about it is the freedom to set my own hours and work from anywhere in the world. That same freedom has been extended to all my employees as well, and they love it.
My brother and I want to start a development business, maybe we could exchange ideas and info.
Thanks for having me. Loved how it turned out!
Love your view on growing the company. Long term thinking. Disruption. Happy employees. Are you still looking for someone as you are growing?
Thank you for sharing your story. Very inspiring.
So do you recommend to charge by the hour or by the job? My issue is trying to figure out how and what’s a decent price to charge not to high or low.
@@live2raid We charge monthly retainers. I don't recommend hourly. As far as what to charge, the best advice I can give, is do a little research on what other similarly sized agencies or consultants are charging, and always charge what your gut tells you that you're worth.
Jason, how do you prevent employees running off with clients? Whats the USP of the agency versus a talented employee who has a personal relationship with the customer?
"Its better to say no than get into a relationship that's never going to end well". Some really good insight, thanks for the information.
Glad it was helpful!
I am a video marketing and social media strategist. I think this is really helpful to provide information. I love when he said "you get what you pay for." YES!
Glad you found this to be informative!
I love is thinking in regards to scaling properly! I think far too many businesses are so focused on just getting clients and being busy, and they don’t think about the long-term and the HEALTH of the business
Good point. Businesses that tend to lean towards a long-term view, rooted in shared visions and values, build themselves sustainable future.
Thanks Vladimir. I agree with you. Thought it can be tough to say no in the beginning stages when you're just trying to get by...but it's definitely the way to go to scale.
Totally agree. I've worked for many startups that floundered or went bust because the CEO focused on the wrong things
Wow! That's amazing! Loved learning about Jason's journey! Thanks for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Glad I took this road some time ago! Having a stable business such as running a SMMA is great.
I wanna start one too
That's awesome!
This is a great interview for people interested in the social media marking space as a business. I started my sma in 2021....by myself lol. A lot of things he said in the video I learned already or know about because I went through it. Baptism by fire! A couple of things I learned personally that he mentioned were you need to find clients or a niche where you both can help each other. Not every business does well with social media because their customers are different, the way that business attracts customers is different, etc. My first client was a local comic book shop who was a family friend kinda. Long story short he wanted more people to walk into his physical store front and buy something and increase his sales in our hometown mall. Social media marketing through Facebook ads was not effective because comic book stuff is very niche retail specific. It needs to be an in demand service/product where you can bring results right away for your client like the guy said. Also, the questioning of a potential client. What do you want out of social media helping your business with your product/service? And walk away if your services can't help that potential client but it's nothing bad. At the same time you don't want to work with someone who you can't bring results because it's going to end badly.
Thank you for sharing your piece of the industry! How's your business going so far?
Great video! I feel like we're about to get that hockey stick growth over here too. We've been heavily investing in our systems and software. Let's go!
Happy to hear that. Good luck to you and your business!
I love the idea of being a virtual agency. Thanks for the video!
That's a good weakness to turn into a strength if it benefits the clients and they save. Makes sense. Very informative video.
Definitely!
seems like a really humble and intelligent guy, great interview
Socialist really have some great principles not taking every client and making sure taking on a new client has to be a good fit. This is great for a business owner because this put’s your business in a position to over deliver for your clients. Thank you Upflip for bringing us a great interview from a company in an incredible industry. Social media marketing
Know what you're worth. Great tip Jason. Videos are getting better and better, keep it up!
Thanks, will do!

I like the way Jason turns away business that is not the right fit. 😎
He seems like an awesome boss! Loved this episode and will be back for the next upload!
I also hit the bell to be notified 🙂
He definitely is! Glad to hear that :)
This is great and inspiring as I'm looking to do something similar. I like the method of disrupting the space and doing things differently. That's the problem with social media, everyone is doing the same thing. You need to stand out by doing things different!
For sure! In any business, standing out is a great idea most of the time. Best of luck to you with your business venture :)
Props to upflip, great questions asked, great answers.Very good content.
Glad you enjoyed it Duncan! Thanks for the kind words and for supporting the channel.
Good info!
What are the recommended tools for a newbie to be educated and have confidence to venture into this business? Are there certificates that one should get?
Keep going like that man

Really great interview
Thank you Torrey!
That's great!! I'm on my way, and I will get there!!
Yes you will Katherine. We believe in you. 😀😀 Are you in the same industry?
Meanwhile over here with a mktg degree and certs and having a tough time growing my experience with a company or agency
this was cool
Interesting case study. Biggest takeaway is disrupting by using month to month contracts
Yes I love the description idea! Make you a true problem solver
Not a lot of agencies do that, something that every agency should consider!
It's been a big one for us. Highly encourage others to consider it as well.
we do month to month, in fact its part of our sales call they can jump in!
To be honest, month-to-month billing is extremely common for small/mid-size digital marketing agencies.
We appreciate the feedback Tom and we agree. 😀Are you in the same type of industry?
Yes, I own a digital marketing agency that offers social media marketing and management, web design and development, email marketing, reputation management, paid advertising, and SEO. I’ve heard of SEO-only companies roping clients into 3 or 6 month contracts (which ensures the client at least pays long enough to see some results), but month-to-month contracts for virtually everything else is pretty much the norm everywhere.
Hmm month to month, it feels like it's hard for the agency to demonstrate their effectiveness, I would say it takes at least 2-3 months before you see results showing from a good social media management. I wonder if a 3-month contract would be better?
Great idea, Nick Nico. Are you in the SMMA industry too? How do you set your contracts?
I’m starting a company in LA and need a couple other people to become “co-owners” of the business with me. If your a hard working, goal oriented individual, plz reach out!
What type of company is it? :)
I would love to know what he pays his employees Hourly!!
What are the risks :)
Month to Month contracts!
dude is good sale man.he sell water to a fish lol great job folks
