I like to think of bII-dim7 as a rootless VI-7b9. Dim7 and maj7 voicings are so handy on guitar because you can replace just about every chord in a progression with one or the other.

I think most of them are based on 251, and use the super imposition, Em7 substitue for Cmaj7 to get the vibe of Cmaj9, similar to Fmaj7 played on Dm7 will bring the vibe of Dm9

What I’m curious about, is whether you see the progression as tonicizing the relative minor of the chosen key, as you have a minor perfect cadence to the “vi” (C: Emin-Amin). J-pop, and a lot of music from japan seems to follow this in between of the relative minor and major tonal center, which The royal road progression encapsulates that perfectly, which is why that movement from the iii-vi feels almost “dark” in tone.
And this is just on its own. Following the progression with a ii-V-I can quickly remind the viewer that we haven’t fully switched to the relative minor, and that the tonal center is the relative major of the minor.

I'm a little bit confused. The chord progressions you show us are in c major? Do they work in a minor key as i tried to do it but it sounded so off. Do the chord progressions only work in major? For instance i tried the just the two of use one and it worked in d major but not d minor

I'm a little bit confused. The chord progressions you show us are in c major? Do they work in a minor key as i tried to do it but it sounded so off. Do the chord progressions only work in major? For instance i tried the just the two of use one and it worked in d major but not d minor
