so wonderful that Japan's culture never abandoned a more expanded harmonic palette - and love the final C6 with the shimmering strings at the video's end
I am by no means a music person, I'm studying engineering ffs. But god damn it, this is amazing. This type of transformation is what makes me awe about art. Turning the seemingly mundane into something to remember. That and I'm a sucker for music in the vein of Joe Hisaishi. Great Explanation for someone who never learned music theory, but could explain how instruments produce music
I actually had a project in which I had been requested 5 japanese style songs, and I had a big problem trying to make them sound "japanese". I used a bunch of japanese scales and stuck with those, but never really thought about using different chords and borrowing chords from other scales. Sounds incredible
Two years ago I was asked to write a piano piece in a JRPG style. I had no idea where to start as I never really consumed much Japanese content. So my intuitive subconscious didn’t drift that way when composing. REALLY wish I had this video to boil down those concepts! This was a great watch 😌
Loving seeing collabs like this on YT! I found Gavin's "Common Japanese Chord Progressions" a long time ago and it was instrumental in me understanding what I was hearing in anime music, as there is a real dearth of info about this in the english speaking music theory community!
Very cool video Ryan! The final version sounds amazing. It would be very interesting to see how you approached the orchestration of this piece. Greetings from Germany :D
this is honestly fantastic. i, who know nothing about music theory but have always been a long time lover of the japanese sound, am absolutely blown away by the breakdown. great videos
omg when the winds came in to perform the highest tension part of the song, it had such a cute sound. I really love your stuff, and what you do with textures and colors!
Really awesome video! Very well explained and it made a lot of sense too. It's amazing how much better it sounds with a few chord extensions and using chords from other keys. The arrangement really sounded like something from Studio Ghibli at the end!
Very nice! I especially like the Em9 with the Lydian color. I also think Japanese harmony is instead of normal jazz, but more modal-music with jazz harmony and modal interchanges, plus, at the same moment they reduce the chord notes. So you will see very often it is just a F7(no3) G7(no3) Asus->A something like that. And you can easily find non-standard chord like nor 3 or sus, but the bass motion explains well what harmony function it is, and meanwhile that have some tensions. And you can explain them in modal harmony function(or modal interchange) than a tonal harmony function. And I feel instead of Jazz-influence, it is maybe more Piazzolla's tango harmony influenced those Japanese composers. I always hear a lot of Piazzolla's chords progressions in their music instead of Duke Ellington's or John Coltrane's. It is just happened that people can also use jazz theory to explain Piazzolla's harmony. Piazzolla definitely influenced Japanese modern music a lot for some reasons. Just some thoughts to share. I might be wrong. I love this topic of video. I am so happy someone is making video of the topic in youtube that I really interested. Thank you so much!!
Definitely felt like I was in a final fantasy game. I hardly know anything about music theory but this video and your other videos on Japanese music theory helped me to understand why I enjoy listening to it so much. Thank you!
Very cool and interesting! I think I already use some of these techniques when I play piano. It’s so impressive when anime music drops some ‘off diatonic’ chords in the chord progression. It makes the music much more alive and fascinating. Thank you for your clear explanation! I just joined your community & I like the way you teach new music theory stuff. Greetings from Germany 😊
This video is so impressive, because it starts with the most _boring_ melody imaginable on the most _boring_ harmonization, but it becomes something really special in the end.
This sure sounds like anime music! Especially that chromatic fall? (idk how you call it) from Am to F, then the last 4 bars sound a LOT like they would come from a certain videogame series about a blonde guy with pointy ears who goes on an adventure… someone must like those a lot
This channel is amazing. This channel has given me alot of inspiration. The tip about not introducing your most colorful chords is awesome. I tend to do that and thats why I can't make a long piece that continues matching the beginning. It's because I don't know enough interesting chords to keep the piece moving. I tend to stay on these chords with minor variations. :D I have a problem with making intros from a motifs. I think that it will really help new writers like me to know how to slowly increase the complexity from a single motif. I have a 5 note motif that I have been experimenting with and I could keep it going because I start off on a bm9 then lead to a A6/9 then into a dmaj11/G finishing with E7(#9) leading to Aadd9. It is very hard to keep the momentum of so many different color tones. I now have the idea to lead into these. Thank you very much. I'm writing something for the April competition and it will be my first complete piece of composition. Tips from anyone welcome.
6:21 So I feel like my musical education was very much historically based, classical and maybe some romantic. But anyway I always wondered how that Bb Major can fit into C Major, that is how a major on the flatted 7th works into music theory… it sounds wonderful but it always has thrown me off. Is it just considered a IV of IV? That’s the thing?
IV of IV is one way, although I usually think of it as being borrowed from the minor mode. So we are keeping the tonic on C but using the bVII from C natural minor
Wow, over 51k subs today, more than double since just 9 days ago, this is fantastic. Only just discovered you & subbed 4 days ago, looks like many others have too. Great music channel, you deserve it, but how is this happening so fast? Congratulations
I have a request, in songs by the cure, don’t change by inxs, heroes by David Bowie, and 1979 by smashing pumpkins, they all have this melancholy kinda sound to them and I can’t crack it
You should show the whole arrangement though so the viewers can have a better comprehension of what’s happening. Love this video though, I’ve always told people you want anime music? It’s essentially just Jazz.
Check out Gavin's channel! [Sakamoto, Hisaishi, et. al.] - Common Japanese Chord Progressions ruclips.net/video/yKV58VVGV9k/видео.html
Why was the last chord in the line cliche a d7? Is there any specific reason?
so wonderful that Japan's culture never abandoned a more expanded harmonic palette - and love the final C6 with the shimmering strings at the video's end
You can't see it in the lead sheet but I intentionally stacked the upper part of the voicing in 4ths which I think really helps add to that sound
@@RyanLeach oh don't get me started ! - lol - the fourth is my most favorite interval !
The C6 chord sounds like Chrono Trigger
@@teb6483 sn
The lick at the end in the english horn though 😂
That was all Gavin I swear
I just love music meme culture hahaha
Yeah that one’s my fault lol
Reminds me of the first time I heard Rite of Spring 😉.
I was like "did they just...? Oh yes, they did!" when I heard that end xD
At this point, the Lick is like the rickroll of jazz. We just got Lickrolled.
I love the term Lickrolled 🤣
i hate this
I will forever use this term now.
What would it be for classocal music
Lickrolled 😂
this is literally JRPG music standart, damn, you guys cracked the code with this one, awesome job
This sounds like it could have been pulled straight out of a visual novel soundtrack.
You definitely nailed thew brief!
This makes me happy, as through composing, I discovered on my own the things done in Japanese music because that was the music I grew up listening to!
I am by no means a music person, I'm studying engineering ffs. But god damn it, this is amazing. This type of transformation is what makes me awe about art. Turning the seemingly mundane into something to remember. That and I'm a sucker for music in the vein of Joe Hisaishi.

YOU DID NOT JUST HIT US WITH THE LICK AT THE END

Happy we can help you!
Wow that final chord is just magical
The final version sounds like it's taken straight out of a Nintendo game :D
Also nice implementation of the Lick.
No shot, it really does!
Like if Pokémon and Legend of Zelda had a baby
Very cool video Ryan! The final version sounds amazing. It would be very interesting to see how you approached the orchestration of this piece. Greetings from Germany :D
Thanks! Yea it would've probably been a good idea to record myself doing that..
this is honestly fantastic. i, who know nothing about music theory but have always been a long time lover of the japanese sound, am absolutely blown away by the breakdown. great videos
This is great! Simple and clear enough to follow but not afraid to dive into the harder concepts. Music is gorgeous too
omg when the winds came in to perform the highest tension part of the song, it had such a cute sound. I really love your stuff, and what you do with textures and colors!
Anime "Sekai Saikou no Ansatsusha, Isekai Kizoku ni Tensei suru" and its best theme "For You / Tarte's Theme" is the best epitome of this.
Really awesome video! Very well explained and it made a lot of sense too. It's amazing how much better it sounds with a few chord extensions and using chords from other keys. The arrangement really sounded like something from Studio Ghibli at the end!
The final result was beautiful combining your very gentle melody with some interesting harmonies!
That's a huge transformation grom the basic harmonization used at the beginning! Amazing!
Very nice! I especially like the Em9 with the Lydian color.

That Wind Rises thumbnail won me, even though i know very little about music theory 🤣
7:26 I just realized that the LH line here is a small reference to Sakamoto's "Bibo no Aozora"! At least it has a similar contour.
Hi gavin
Waiting for this since months. Thank you!
I was here before you hit 10k subs... so like a week ago XD. I love to see this channel getting the attention it deserves. It truly is a gold mine.
Ha thanks, yea the last few weeks have been wild
Definitely felt like I was in a final fantasy game. I hardly know anything about music theory but this video and your other videos on Japanese music theory helped me to understand why I enjoy listening to it so much. Thank you!

This is the first time I’ve ever heard the b7 chord be referred to as the “4 of 4”. I kinda dig it.
Literally sounds like its from studio ghibli thats so cool
This guy is addictive. It’s hard to stop watching him.
Nice collab and awesome arrangement, it's amazing to see how music theory helps understand and describe musical registers so accurately
This video is so impressive, because it starts with the most _boring_ melody imaginable on the most _boring_ harmonization, but it becomes something really special in the end.
Thanks to the English subtitles, Google Translate is more accurate and I can understand the video content. Thanks for a great channel!
This is insane, I love it. The end result sounds so damn good.
These are very helpful videos. It'd be really neat to see one explaining Hindemith's approach to counterpoint.
This sure sounds like anime music! Especially that chromatic fall? (idk how you call it) from Am to F, then the last 4 bars sound a LOT like they would come from a certain videogame series about a blonde guy with pointy ears who goes on an adventure… someone must like those a lot
CESH or line cliché
This information is so priceless. Thank you very much Ryan, i'm in love with your channel!
I like how you added 'the lick' to the end.
having found you right when my composing homework became harder is like a blessing lol, now my music sounds at least somewhat presentable
Bruh I literally just watched his channel the other day, this is great!
I recently came across both of these channels separately so it’s cool to see this crossover so soon!!
Man, I love this collaborative effort!!
THE DECEPTIVE CADENCE I NEEDED THAT THX
Leach upload at 6am wooo

I’m so glad MrBeast studies Japanese contemporary music
This is effing brilliant!!
So nice. Definitely enjoying these videos!
This is an amazing video! I always love to see content related to this subject. Great stuff guys, keep it up!!
Well this was cool, heading to Gavin's channel now!
Wonderful video, Ryan
Awesome video concept, excellent execution 👌
Thanks!
My Boy Gavin! Nice surprise!
I barely understand music theory but somehow I'm always checking the channel for more content 🙏
amazing video bro!

Brilliant video I learn so much watching your content thanks!
Awesome video, love the minor key merged with major key
That b6 b7 thing in the last crescendo there, WOW hectic FF7 vibe
-If the Nationwide jingle was in a studio Ghibli film.
All in all, great vid and cute melody
I have a request, in songs by the cure, don’t change by inxs, heroes by David Bowie, and 1979 by smashing pumpkins, they all have this melancholy kinda sound to them and I can’t crack it
I love these videos. Just found you today. Subscribed right away.
Loved this… and the lick comin in hot at the end did it for me 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Really nice video!
Wow, that was beautiful-
Very nice explanation! It has some Clannad vibes... and the Lick. I love it!
Wow, that's beautiful!
Thank you very much!
I appreciate the licc at the end
you guys have a gift
I learn and enjoyed this video so much! Would love to see your take on Anime melodies
Very nice phrasing btw. Enjoyable piece.
This is sooo good!! Thank you
You should show the whole arrangement though so the viewers can have a better comprehension of what’s happening. Love this video though, I’ve always told people you want anime music? It’s essentially just Jazz.
Pretty similar names lmao I got scared for a sec!
I'm not a musician, I just felt something different from Japanese music. And this video just gave me an idea why that is
Very cool. iv- would be another great chord to go to for the sound you're looking for, as would ii-7b5; utilizing the b6 of the key.
WOW very fan of the orchestration
Thankyou for this! Really helpful 🤍
Great Job... That's what I call colorful
The result Is very nice! 😊👏
Very interesting. And well explained. Many thanks.
Love the liccc at the end!
Great content as always! thanks!
I love Japanese music you deserve all the subs in the world
The lick thoo, so smooth haha
Great content! Good luck with googling anything like ... anime harmony, if you don't know it exists. Great starting point!
the lick haha, great video!
Absolutely helpfull video, amazing!
Love your videos! If you were to make a video on how to effectively use diminished chords with an orchestra, that'd be awesome!
The final version, especially the second half, reminded me a lot of Dragon Quest music.
Amazing lesson. Thank you :)
damn that was such a nice video and experiment, great content
Wow! Thank you, really interesting 😍
Wonderful! This will help me!
THIS IS AMAZING
The liiiiiiiiick at the end
