Just a shout out to you all for a great game. I am learning about this legendary megadungeon and OSE through you all. Love your onscreen format with the module pages as well. Thanks for posting.
Glad you’re enjoying it! 😎👍
I love the setup of the viewers (us!) seeing things the players don't - like the players setting up a hunting blind while the Referee looks up "stirges".
Big, stupid grin on my face every time one of these drops. This is such a good group.
I really wish that more actual plays , especially osr, were this quality in terms of production. It really makes it watchable and something I’m excited for. I’m sure there are other good osr actual plays, but they’re really tough to watch.
Thank you! We’re still muddling through a lot of the technological aspects of production. We’ve made concerted efforts to improve without breaking our budgets, but we have a firm philosophy of focusing on our game first.
Old school is the best school. Loved the smoking out of the stirges idea. 5e players would just kick in the door. Problem solving is so much more fun and the danger feels more real!! Good session. I’m intrigued.
Its my favorite part about old school rp. I had sort of forgotten about what it was like back in the day.
I agree, I love it. They didn’t spawn in a newbie garden perfectly matched to their level like it’s WoW. It’s a brutal and scary world. So much more fun.
This is my exact experience with 5e. It’s basically a super-hero game. 1e/OSR is real d&d.
I have my fingers crossed you guys make it as far as we did during the original playtest. Things just get weirder from here on out. ;)
Really like your setup. Especially the “behind the DM screen view”. Helps give context for us other DMs living vicariously through your game 😅😊
I love listening to your play sessions. Other shows may get more views, but this here is authentic gaming. Zero melodrama, but all of the urine jokes you would hope for, and at all of the right moments. I would never tell someone that their way of playing is "wrong", but by golly, you guys are doing it right. Sounds like every gaming group I've ever been a part of. I give you one Arden's thumb, way, way up.
Oops, wrong tower; lmao
Makes me feel better as a DM when I make a mistake, loved that the group rolled with it so well!
I like Ted's questions about historically anomalous statue specifics that would indicate a secret entrance or other secret. I'm going to steal it.
Upload more! These are fun to watch. These videos can be used to teach gamers about OSR, how to have so much fun exploring all the little details. Savor the world your characters inhabit!
Awesome that you’re getting some value from the sessions! Episode 3 will be posted before the day is out!
"Do you need any more wet cloth?" Rofl!
Fun session! Thanks also for sharing your Exploration Feats sheet; for would-be DMs new to this sphere it really helps to take small looks behind the DM screen like that :)
Such joy, as I see players going deep into the detail weeds! The fight for the right gear etc, is what I long to do and have players care about😍
The Sword and Sorcery vibes are strong this play through and I am 100% here for it 💪🏼 Seriously thankful for this group and the entertainment you guys provide!
A dragon in the first and second session of a 1st level party? NOICE. 🐉 😎
Really enjoying this, still sad about an end to Dolmenwood but this is equally superb. Top notch game play and problem solving as ever, the party work off each other really well. Those rules modifications sound interesting too, off to check them now!
Watching this has motivated me to get my own copy and hope to use at least the first 4-8 levels in my home campaign🤞
Hell yeah!
awesome!
These actual plays are awesome! You guys are a great group. Entertaining, authentic, and helpful/inspiring for my own games. 🤘🏼
Well done, guys. Glad I came in on Ep 0! Can't wait for next week.
Man, Jon, you have a good poker face. I'm glad Matt remembered about the dragon before smoking a second tower haha.
Great session guys!
Very cool. Just purchased the books and am following along. :)
Lol “Arden the hand slapper”.
Some classic quotes in this one, "Do you want me to just pee on your cloak?" - Hilarious. Well done for the investigative work around the statue of Arden! Loving these. You guys have a 10ft pole, right...right? 😃
Do have any idea how much a 10ft pole costs these days? Avaricios dreams of the day he can afford a fancy-pants 10ft pole!
@@mattavaricios4679 Of course, how fiscally reckless of me. Will nobody think of the budget! 😄
yeah i could not afford a 10 ft pole. I will def look into buying one with the 2gp I found in the firepit
Love the maps! Would be fun to share character sheets after the sessions to follow along
Always happy to see a new episode
Oh heck yes! So stoked for this episode!
They've learned their lesson about telegraphed danger, I see!
"We all know what stirges are, Jon."
"I haf already peed."
"You ever see a sun-burned iguana?"
"The chaos that is deep within me wants to see what happens"
I'm gonna do some character portraits. Ozric The Omnicompetent, at the very least, deserves it
A name like that calls out for visual representation!
43:43 clever play Vargr :) 🧐
::raises hand:: "I have already peed on Vargr." - Avaricios
Arden the Hand Slapper ! 😅😅😅
As promised, Back for Episode 2 :) Let's crawl into the dark by torchlight, boys!
Hey I just started watching this OSE campaign and I'm thoroughly enjoying it. I noticed under your houserules that Thieves start with 6 expertise points instead of 4. Why was this modified? Just wondering. Thanks!
To be honest, there was a mathematical reason, but I did it so long ago, I can’t remember what it was! I believe it was to bring their starting chances in line as close to possible to the default OSE/BX starting percentiles.
I like this! What tech do you guys use to play like this? How are you sharing the maps and stuff with your players?
In this particular video, we’re using Owlbear Rodeo VTT and Discord video. Currently (Jan ‘24) we use Miro as a whiteboard and VDO Ninja for A/V.
Where did you get those parchment-style illustrations that look down on the cliffs & city from an isometric angle? Those are not in the module, but seem to be very well done & would be useful for letting the players know what the area looks like sans spoilers.
Check the link to my house rules in the vid description.
Epic elevator scene, goosebump-inducing! Another fun one!
PS is this comment field a safe space for geeky and possibly over-involved comments on the house rules? If so, just wanted to say I for one am super excited to see how the XP-for-exploration system will play out - I have been wondering if this could be partially justified within the "XP-for-gold" paradigm by classifying these XP awards assigning as an abstract/indirect treasure value for rumours found, investigations done, etc. Also, math wise, it looks like the XP awards could be simplified by approximating the minor XP award (5%) to something like the formula 100 XP times 2^(average party level-1), accomplishing the non-linear scaling warranted by the B/X XP advancement tables:
you are safe here. i'm not sure anyone can keep up with you mathematically...
Puh, thanks 😅 The above formula is just another way of accomplishing a scaled award, yielding very similar sums as in the house rule doc.
So, for example, the XP award for completing a minor quest will be ( based on average party level ):
Lvl 1: 100 xp
Lvl 2: 200 xp
Lvl 3: 400 xp
Lvl 4: 800 xp
Lvl 5: 1600 xp
Etc
Double that for a major quest.
The math looks cool! I’ve already decided to nerf the percentages a bit on my end, as I can already tell it’ll speed up leveling too much for my comfort. Of course, that’s all gated by training costs, but still.
@@3D6DTL this makes me sad.
Hey man! I'm getting so many ideas from you as a DM. Really good. Just one thing: what VTT are you using?
For these earlier episodes, we used Owlbear Rodeo VTT. We have since divested ourselves from VTTs, and now we use Miro, a whiteboard app, for much the same purpose.
The poor aborted stirge.
Are you running this campaign set within a specific setting?
Yes, we’re using the author’s built-in setting, which is sketched out in the adventures.
