The Halls of Arden Vul Ep 75 - Old School Essentials Megadungeon | They Really Tie the Room Together
The energy this episode was awesome! Thanks for another great episode guys!
Way to go AV Club! I love the scribing ruling, it makes acquiring and researching spells more of a reasonable task, and plus we got to see Decompose in action again. Big finds and accomplishments this session, well-earned
Another great episode. 1. I believe that regenda est is technically rendered "should rule" or "ought to rule" 2. I was hoping that one of the scrolls in the witch doctor hoard would have been cure blindness. hee hee
Such a great episode and loved all the laughter. Y’all were having such a good time and we laughed so much! Some of the many hilarious moments….Mike upon realizing he can’t reattempt a turning on a gast: “Somebody else do something, I have no idea.” Matt: “Does the chest or Upior detect with more evil?” Jon: “If anyone else asks me about alignment I’m going to drop kick them.” …..And the coldest statements of them all….Do we want to resurrect Skleros?? Ted: “No.” David: “This is not a game of emotions.” 🤣
🖤
Avaricios would have--he'd done nothing but good for them. Wulfheard-- hell no, he'd just want his stuff back.
@@BeatrixDad This was Mort's thinking too
Poor Mike. Waiting for his turn during combat. Looks like he has played too many inferior combat systems lately.
Witches going to need stiches cause we hurt them to take their riches?
Excellent work gents!!!
So good to be back in the Halls and fighting with undead beastmen; also love the thumbnail! The whole session was fun but David's caution in dealing with the evil head made me laugh so hard. It was almost like he cared about Upior. I found the discussion about retainers interesting and the idea that they were XP sponges. Doing some quick back of the envelope calculations the haul from the ghast/witchdoctors and Deino's secret room is about 16,275 GP/XP divided by 6 (4 full shares and 4 1/2 NPC shares) or 2,712XP from treasure and there was another 3,328XP from FOE (most of which came from Lisbeth and Baurios' abilities/actions) The trade off of 1,360 XP from the treasure (difference between 4 full shares and 6 shares) vs. 2,120 from FOE (Baurios and Lisbeth earned 8,470 of the FOE XP) that would not have been earned seem reasonable to me. Also, employing the retainers (maybe not Lisbeth) to check for traps/open secret doors trapped by witches etc. could result is a few less shares having to be shared.... As always, thank you for sharing the table with us!
mmm great content, thanks guys.
Its concentrated evil!
Don't touch it!
I love the hoard episodes even though the logistics discussion can drag on a bit and often are pointless ultimately. But finding and messing with cool stuff is the best.
It's nice to be back in Arden Vul and damn, what a haul! Btw Lisabeth is the most powerful Spellcaster in the party now, so, please don't leave her behind with the rest of the retainers haha
Home again, home again
Perfect! I have the day off, got my espresso and a new AV episode! What more could a guy possibly want!??
"Let's negotiate..." 🤣
all too often adventurers overlook this simple way to engage with people they meet in the dungeon. why fight when you can make friends?
Back home in the halls of Arden Vul!
I missed the time stamp and now I feel stupid, but... did I hear Hesayan Church? I am listening to the entire campaign as I start my own in Dolmenwood and... damn, I was *EXACTLY* planning to steal a bit from the Church from Arnold of Goblin Punch for my own game, but it still didn't come up. The Cleric has been too busy surviving being stabbed a bit too much to care about details of the doctrine lol
Love the shout out to Mythic mountains, they are also great
I enjoyed Mike GM’ing- well done! Regarding moving fast or explaining all-the-things, I personally appreciate the discussions amongst the players. It makes me feel connected with their characters and laugh, cringe, gasp along with them as they decide what to do. Obviously not possible at a convention. My GM hubby prefers quicker decisions by the players at times. But I tell him- “you know all the details and what’s dangerous, but as players we don’t and need to tread lightly at times!” Finally, we LOVED seeing Elvis- such a cutie.❤
It was definitely a nice experience with the system, even if it isn't something I personally might want to play in the future, it was nice to have you guys display the possibilities of the ruleset.
What David said about the DCC funnel makes sense to me. I heard about the idea before my brother ran his OSE game and I suggested it cause I thought it sounded like a bit of chaotic fun, but then we kind of wound up just huddled together in fear rather than really getting into it and losing a lot of characters. It almost felt like 4 wasn't enough to really get people to get into the idea of pushing them thru. Though, maybe some of it was just the setup of his dungeon.
Instead of giving them 4 characters, create a deck of character cards. Everyone arrives in a huge lottery of bodies (draws however many, and the deck goes down in reach of everyone)...when someone dies, draw another card as the next vict..er, PC comes forward.
If anyone wants to peel away friends that play 5e to this style of play I suggest Running: Tomb of the Serpent King in Shadowdark.. Thats how I introduced them to OSR concepts using system rules that feel similar to them. I also ran Wavestone Monolith but I put it in the abyss down in that tomb. Turns out the BBEG down there would make good potion ingredients if you know what i mean :P
ran that in ose for my kids group and it was a great experience
I like Shadowdark, fun system. But I also prefer OSE, specifically if you port over the Dolmenwood quality of life rules improvements, **but keeping R-a-C. Dolmen-School Essentials it's what I like to call it. About Shadowdark, what I particularly like is the art presentation, the abundance of great adventure modules and the portability of a simple the system. However, if I where to run it on a regular bases, I think I would do without about 80% of the atribute checks (for things like wisdom/perception) and reserve it for saves and very specific checks (like magical focus, very difficult climbs, etc.)
"Time wasters" have a slightly different implication if you're playing the light/torch rules by the book - you want situations where the players waffle because it burns their torch time. And you might want an early opportunity to demonstrate it. ALso that mechanic is a ticking clock for convention games - time pressure is more prevalent.
@1:43:54 - Matt's joke was just hilarious!
Another great session fellas! I hope the 2nd Down the Hatch event goes well tonight (11/8/2024 for those who are watching and reading this in the future per Jon's instructions!). I am so glad you all decided to take this little detour to Shadowdark. I have been very interested in learning more about the system but haven't had the time to investigate it on my own with all my other commitments. While I enjoyed your journey, I think I am satisfied that I won't be diving more deeply into it as I find OSE to be plenty for me right now. Maybe when I have less on my plate, I can add this the RPGs to be played. As always, I appreciate you guys sharing your table and your thoughts on Shadowdark and playing at CONs and the other topics you covered in this detox.
I was a little disappointed by Jon glossing over his review of the system of Shadowdark. Everyone always praises Shadowdark and I knew that Jon would be on the other side and wanted to hear why. I don't think you have to be offensive to give an analysis that covers things you dislike and why. I suspect it's the skill checks, the meta tokens, the advantage/disadvantage to cover everything, maybe the spell system, the racial super powers, etc..
Yeah, I was trying to keep the positive vibe going and to focus more on our table’s gameplay, rather than a review of the system.
Very interesting detox. A great example of Teds point is the person in your discord running Arden Vul using Shadowdark. With its mix of sci-fi and fanasy.
I've played a lot of Shadowdark, 5e, DCC, and a little bit of OSE.. if you guys like the magic system I would suggest trying to do a DCC one shot. That imo is the best magic system of any game. (A little crunchy and complex yes, but super fun). SD magic system is inspired from DCCs
Goblin kills spider, that fits, small creature with magical blade, very apropos
Man, the last session was a blast! Awesome game, omg.
The wishes in this were absolutely fantastic - Such great stuff you guys!
I have really enjoyed these games so far. Something about old school that I enjoy so much.
I'm surprised how many NPCs know the word Fecund.
I saw Mike has the box o books version rather than the tomes. I have the tome, and that's what all my friends got as well. I like it all in one spot, but thought it might be fun to have the smaller books, any thoughts?
Following weekly on Episode 89, going for my second round of watching the whole series and this is the place where the legendary Mort was born. Notalgic days.
Graffiti gets put on train cars going by so quickly is actually via graffiti artists working in teams.
This was a great one-shot guys! Looking forward to your leadership oh Great Dark Lord Bacmolk! David/Ted/Matt when is your time in the DM seat???
that was epic!
Jon didnt hesitate over his wish for a second. Love how quickly everyone rolled with it and insisted on it. Great job guys, loved the little one shot.
This was cool! I liked how you run with the wish spell madness! Would like to hear your thoughts on the rules here or on Discord!
i'll def be on the discord.... gotta get through election day here in the U.S. first
"The age of men is over. The time of the orc has come." - Bagmolk
Short and sweet finale. Very nice guys!
Loved the conclusion! Spoilers below Jon ascends to his rightful place as ruler of the world!!!!! and I second the idea of a 3d6 DTL primordial merch preferably with something very offensive that no one else will know.
So grateful for this after just voting here in the US!
This is so fun. I hope everyone (that wants to) gets a chance to run their own one shots.
Awesome! Part 2. Bluw-bluŵ-blu-blu 🦑 (if you put a 3d6 TDL t-shirt with the TDL in primordial slang, I'll buy it!)
Nice GM work, Mike. The albino crocodile, the inscriptions on the door and the prisoner were smart additions. Especially the last two which helped to spell out the lore.
PLS DO MORE SHADOW DARK! ❤
Ah, dang, I was looking forward to seeing how the real-time torch tracking went! I think that could be particularly challenging and interesting for such a thoughtful and careful bunch of players
