CSX Heritage: Locomotive 1972 Honoring the Family Lines System

  • Our fleet of heritage locomotives is growing again as we unveil CSX Locomotive 1972, a tribute to the Family Lines System! The #ONECSX team in Waycross, GA recreated this unit to celebrate the special time from 1972-1982 when the Seaboard Coast Line, Clinchfield and L&N railroads were marketed as one. Eventually merging to become the Seaboard System Railroad, and ultimately the CSX we know today, the Family Lines System represents an integral part of our railroad’s rich history.

You don’t really realize how many different smaller railroad systems really make up CSX, until you look at it all spread out, and look at all these new Heritage Units they’ve made. CSX stands for CHESSIE SEABOARD and the X meaning CONSOLIDATED. In my time of life, I’ve only seen CSX. Conrail, Chessie Sustem, Seaboard System, C&O, and B&O, all way behind me! I live about 7 miles from the Ohio River line, which is an old B&O line. It runs from Wheeling WV, to Huntington WV, a bout 256 miles of track, so when I seen the B&O new heritage unit, I was like oh wow, that would be awesome to see on that line. Matter of fact there’s an old small railroad bridge that goes over the road in Point Pleasant WV. Near Krodel park. It actually still says Baltimore and Ohio on the lower frame of it. I thought boy what picture for a calendar, or railroad magazine, worth 1000 words to have the new B&O heritage unit pause momentarily right on that small B&O bridge with the old name Baltimore and Ohio right under it!

Reminder to you railfans just like me, if your complaining still, keep in mind this is a railroad, a strong railroad that can and wont stop painting these heritage units in the way they plan, they are doing a better job than bnsf right now so appreciate what CSX Gives because these units are staying the way they are. something i don't think a lot of people consider is that the csx fade might look dissatisfying to some but it makes their heritage units unique. sure, being fully painted would've been nice but i think it would've just fallen back in line with ns and up's heritage units, not to say they look bad but there's just not a tell-tale sign it's proudly owned by a railroad.

Doubt it. The E-unit livery on PM is essentially a variation on the C&O colors, with the square PM herald in front. If CSX goes for a truly authentic PM color livery, it will be the color livery of the only surviving PM diesel locomotive, Pere Marquette SW-1 no. 11, which is at the B&O Museum.
