Spectral Compressor: You Have To Relearn Compression

- I mean technically the parameters still do the same thing as in normal compressors, but it's like coupled to a whole different sensation of sound modulation that you need to get used to first.

HA! The joke is on you. I never learned compression to begin with.
dANG IT YOU BEAT ME TO THE COMMENT
i was thinking of making some beginner-friendly tutorials but there are a lot of them out there already so it's hard to justify
You are the wind beneath my wings
UTB
@@Beatsbastelnplease, I’ll take all the tutorials because it’s still somewhat lost on me. Maybe you’ll be the final link
This is so fascinating. I might have to play with this! The music you used to demonstrate it did a perfect job showing how it actually works.
I saw this video when it came out, and ever since then, ive used it in so many sound designs, ots the best
Got my download and will be mixing with it tomorrow. Can't wait!
I used to use soothe2 but to be honest, i was never happy with how it sounded. ive been using Spectral Compressor for a month and its my favortie tool now, i love it for extreme damage actually. reminds me of MSpectraldynamics a lot - i loved that workflow in 2014, im really happy this is blowing up right now
@@StanleyGurvich i ended up with Soothe on that particular example, but I use SC on many other tracks. I like that the 2 effects can't be exactly matched, but just play similiar roles in their own ways
same but I'll switch between these and a few others, soothe2 sounds too... needs improvement 😅 and SC can be lossy at times too.
It was one of my next projects, so I don't have to worry about it anymore :-)
I don't think Robbert's Spectral Compressor is going to be the last successful spectral compressor. This is still a rather young category of audio plugins and there's a lot of potential to give it a unique spin. For example you could just use other shapes than parabolas for the spectral distribution or try different compressor algorithms on the bins
Cool idea, yet I stil have a hard time actually hearing what it could do to a signal. While these synths are cool, they are already super processed and its unusually difficult to get a good idea what they sound like. Kinda like showing ott on 100% doesn't hint at the practicality of it much.
@@pham4925 this is literally how i practically use the effect in this project xD i know i'm neither using it subtle nor ultra hard, but somewhere in between and that can be confusing, but that is literally why i said 'you have to relearn compression'. the spectral context of the compressors completely changes what kinda sound shaping can be achieved and expected from the effect. it is an unusual sound character that might throw you off at first, but it's also addicting and because of that it will likely get as hyped as autotune at some point
i gotto agree here!
I have an idea for a spectral VST morphing plugin, I have a working prototype, but am looking for help from someone who understands the math and about artefacts and stuff just so I can be 100% I have it right.
Not looking for a review or anything just literally for help. Can I get in touch to share it? The repo is private right now.
@@zebraforceone i'm not a great at fourier math problems, but i could try to help a bit. come to my discord group! link in the description
oooh keep me in the loop please!
im not sure how to download. do i need to compile with rust?
@@sitharhero nope, just find the nightly builds. the path is shown in the video
it s a good complementary vid to that other vid you spoke about. Thx i have this plugin but i needed that tut m8
@@Nenko_Music yeah. au5 skips over the details a bit, which makes sense because his audience makes mudpies all day long already
@@Beatsbasteln oh, sorry i don t get "mudpies", what does it means, they make muddy mixes ?
@@Nenko_Music it's when you put a billion crazy effects with lots of randomizers in series so that whatever sound you throw on the track it will just result in crazy noise. mudpies are typically used to get unique samples for genres like colorbass or botanica
@@Beatsbastelnkids nowdays lol ;p thx for the info :D
I put it in my vst3 as a copy/paste from the download folder and it shows in program (common 86) but it is not in any of my DAW's
@@jmoemorris4133 it's 64bit. the 86 folder is for 32bit plugins. so go into the program files folder that has no number on it
the VST3 should go in C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3 I believe this is standard.
Is it suitable only for Ableton or FL Studio as well?
@@psy-lion this is bitwig, and yes, it should work in all DAWs
Thanks to the author of the video! And thanks to robbert-vdh for creating such a unique plugin!
id use the plugin but it always crashes if i run more than one instance
that sucks. you should contact robbert about it, so that he can make sure it works for everyone
the workaround for this is so stupid but works. just go to your vst3 folder and make like 10 copies of it. Spectral compressor 2.vst3, spectral compressor 3.vst3, etc. i have 10 and as long as i don't use, let's say, spectral compressor 2 more than once, i'm fine. still not ideal for workflow but it's a temporary fix
@@zeccaflp lol, never heard of a bug like this. in which DAW btw?
@@Beatsbasteln FL Studio haha
@@zeccaflp I had the same issue with this plugin in Fl Studio but it only happens when you try to have 2 (or more) Spectral Compressors on your screen at the same time, so as long as you close it and keep only one UI on screen it works and you can have as many as you like that way.
Thanks. Ive oogled this plugin ever since I saw AU5s video. But the install process seems complicated.
If you wanna make an install video for it. Id be very happy :)
you go to the spectral compressor link in the video description. there you click at the "NIH-plug" link and then on the link that says "here". There are the downloads. in the downloaded zip you find both clap and VST3 versions of robbert's effects. you can copy the VST3 files to "C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3" and the CLAP ones to "C:\Program Files\Common Files\CLAP". you only need either VST3 or CLAP, not both.
yes its not that hard! enough ogling start compressing!
@@Beatsbasteln Im on a mac :)
@@bodanerius then you have to google the vst3 or clap paths for mac. i don't know them from the top of my head because i have no mac yet
The specific issue with Mac is that developers are required to sign their apps and plugins with Apple, or they won't open at all with the "Apple couldn't verify this app" type of message. I think you need to disable the System Integrity Protection to make them load right now, or he needs to get a certificate from Apple so he can sign his plugins and arrow people to run them normally, but that, obviously, costs money.
6:50 - Could I think of the "Window Overlap" as some sort of crossover between windows? Cool track, btw!
@@aldo_pinheiro yep, that's what it is. i just didn't wanna talk about why FFT needs windowing in this video, since it's a bit offtopic with all the practical applications. and thx :)
Hey dude do u have any contact info?

Is this Soothe2 free?

No, it hasnt been cracked yet lol
Dudes hating in the comments my god. I like the demo track. I dont even listen to au5, respect to him but his stuff is TOO focused on sound design, like a lot of modern electronica (bring back that label!).
i don't know if his music is good tbh. I only ever check out his sounddesign videos. But I know that I love the sounds he create in general and I listen to some artists with similiar sounds and probably similiar compositional processes, so it's cool that Au5 makes his videos. I always love to watch them
honestly teachers and labrats dont understand emotions and psychology! what do you expect. "Psychological and emotional Impact" is a different science to "Sonic and Audio Impact". They CAN work together but the one is WAY more potent in making "music" vs "interesting sounds". Skrillex for instance, is a CULTURAL Genius FIRST.... and then AUDIO genius second. GET THAT. TEST THAT.
@@KOSMIKFEADRECORDS that's true. it can be hard to make emotional music and make a technical point at the same time. my music was always a bit more on the technical side, but at the same time it is honest music that i personally like to listen to, and not just something that was created to get into sone spotify playlist like most commercial music. i'm proud of my stuff

Your music is so bad
@@horsejohnson7959 i don't believe that you wrote this comment because you genuinly think my music sucks. it's not the kind of music that provokes people so hard that they wanna exclude it from music in general. tell me what really grinded your gears about this video
@@Beatsbasteln he's probably angry of his small dick
@Beatsbasteln If the audio example you gave in this video is supposed to be an actual mix/song that you are planning on releasing in the future and not just an example crafted specifically to showcase the compressor in a mix where changes of parameters are easily noticeable due to exaggeration in volume and intensity,
then yea, it sucks a lot actually.
If not, then that guy who originally commented hasn't understood the point of a good tutorial.
@@TRVladdy oh yeah, i see what you mean. you expected a change in sound that is more on the subtle side of things, like in most compressor tutorials. but i was not clickbaiting when I wrote the title 'You Have To Relearn Compression'. Because while you don't have to relearn what attack, release or ratio means, the resulting sound shaping capabilities are just completely different in a spectral compressor. a much more extreme sound that blurs the boundaries between sounddesign and mixing.
@@Beatsbasteln No hes right I mean everything is fine ish but the lead synth is a no no, like the sequencing at 2:20 is giving child level prod. Good video tho!
Bro give up on music lol
you suck dude lol
rude
tf!?
you can think his music is bad without being disrespectful. you can even give unwanted criticism or constructive feedback.
