  • Eight minutes of amateur home movie with primarily subjects being what was referred to as "Streetcars" in the Pittsburgh area. Cars made by the St Louis Car company. During the 1930's thru the mid 1960's Pittsburgh had one of the largest fleets of such cars in the country. See if you can spot anything familiar or still existing in the background

These movies were taken just slightly before my first trip to Pittsburgh. I started filming the system in 1964, just after PAT took over Pittsburgh Railways. Besides the lines, I filmed extensively in the Downtown Triangle on color Super 8 movie film. I had just missed the West End lines and the McKeesport lines, unfortunately. But what I saw, rode and filmed was spectacular !! I would check in to a hotel and spend two weeks at a time filming the system. When I first went to Pittsburgh, I thought I had died and gone to trolley heaven...lol...My Pittsburgh films are on many 400' reels, now since transferred to video. I 'walked' many of the lines to film them. I filmed and rode on many sad last rides. And I even chartered my own car for a small group of friends on the 40 Mt. Washington line. I took a 1700 series city car up there. Those cars never ran on that line.

This is the best Pittsburgh streetcar video I have ever seen! And I've watched literally hundreds. The main focus is downtown Pittsburgh which few people filmed in detail and it gives the true perspective about how the streetcars were everywhere in the downtown in the late 50s - before the abandonments really started. I was a kid when I experienced this for myself and hearing the bell sounds all over the downtown all the time was something I've never forgotten. PLEASE let us know who shot this magnificent film!

Learned to drive, weaving around those tracks! Remember the trolley driver had to get out and reach up and put the electrical arm back on the cable when it jumped off. The way I remember it it only happened occasionally, but the first time it happened to me I thought "what the heck happened"?

Im looking to make a video detailing the history of Pgh streetcar lines and the T. Would you allow me to use this footage underneath commentary? I would provide full credit to your channel in the description and via watermarks. Thank you
