I was one month old when the flood happened. Born in Seward, Pa, 60mi. east of Pittsburgh. Watching this film, am reminded of the human capacity to overcome. Thank you for the film!!!! Frances in NM
What if Donald Trump was President in 1936.Think of the possibilities, He and Adolf would have gotten along well. How long would he have waited to send help to the cities, or would he have had Jared deal with it so both of them could make money.
Thank you for posting this! I've seen photos over the years, but this is the first time I've seen video. Amazing and sad. My grandmother worked at Horne's for most of her life (Downtown Horne's, in the cafeteria)... She well-remembered the flood and was devastated financially as they did not get a paycheck for a long time. She and my mother (8 years old at the time) lived on East Street. My mother (95 as I write this) does not remember much about the flood. My father was 11, lived at 2441 Sorrel street, (125 feet higher than the river) and was happy they were high enough not to flood; other relatives were not as lucky...
Working now in a highrise (Highmark) at Fifth and Liberty, and thinking about what took place 90 years ago, especially since the Joseph Horne building is right out my window.
This is crazy yet tragic.. I can’t imagine how terrible a disaster on that magnitude would be now… so scary plus those waters would have been super freezing 🥶 anyways thank you for sharing
My grandma and her brother floated on the door of their house until they got to higher ground during this flood. They lived right next the river on the north side where the water treatment plant is today. They went to bed and when they woke up the water was almost up to the second story of the house.
There is a line marked on I think the old Kaufman’s building downtown where there height of the water level was during the st patrick’s day flood of 1936.
Hello from Petrolia Butler County about 35 miles North east of The Steel City. Imagine what Parker East Brady and every other river town went through. Did they have any of the Lock Systems or The Kinzu Dam Built at this Time? Or did they did the Army Corp of Engineers build them after this flood to prevent it from happening again? Nothing better than Western Pa.
If u go to the Blvd of the allies entrance of the post gazette building and look to the left of the door,u will see a sign with a line that showed how high the water was. From the sidewalk it's about 8 foot high. U can only see the sign and what it is,but it's too high to actually touch
Some place I have a copy of the Sun Telle from that week.Bought while I was standing in line at a rummage sale in Corning, NY. i was buying a flat iron
My grandmother took my mom and her sisters, all in single digit ages, over to the McKees Rocks Bridge to see the flooding. They would have looked down onto the Pennsylvania Railroad, close to where the camera was set up. There are a few photos that are commonly seen, but this film is much better. Many more areas are shown.
Crazy to see that the power grid was still operational. I wouldn't want to be riding in that streetcar, since electricity and water don't work well together.
Why do they need to include the film projector noise in a silent film? Was this dubbed in after? Why would the curator do that? How long has this film been available? How long has it been visible on RUclips?
My Mom worked in town during this flood. I heard all about the flood growing up. I'm glad you posted it so I can finally see it.
Great footage. The flooding was more extensive and deeper than I realized. Clean up would be monumental. What a disaster this was.
Thank you posting this epic video.

It was unbelievable to see footage from a flood in 1936 in downtown Pittsburgh, wow.
That's was I live tho
Those light fixtures on the Horne's building were awesome. They should be replicated and put on the Highmark Fitness Center.
This is amazing

I was 3 months old then...living in Wheeling W Va area...a number of floods have happened since...
Time goes by fast

Dr Ewalt was my FIRST OPTOMETRIST. I was 9 or 10 when I first saw him. RIP Dr Ewalt!
5:20 I was NOT expecting to see Manchester! (my neighborhood), Wow!👍👍Lot's more Prewar North Side footage than I've seen eleswhere.
I remember one time that Pittsburgh flooded in 2022.I live in Pittsburgh too.
Excellent❗✌️

How were all these homes and buildings salvaged??
Did this flood the west end as well?

250 million clean up in 1936- can you imagine the Cost if something of this magnitude occurred now in 2021?
Nealy $5.5 billion in January 2023 dollars.

Look at that current.
Even the 1936 hum was there!
1:49 when you consider how far up Fifth and Wood is from either river....That's freaking amazing!

Wonderful footage, but the
background sound is quite
annoying :(

My Grandfather and other men rescued several people with boats.
My grandpa told me about this😢
All of that water was full of raw sewage
