Nirvana on a budget is probably more authentic grunge than a big expensive rig
This is true.
Except all his tones in the albums we hear are 1960s twin reverbs, Mesa Boogie pre-amps, and Marshall 4x12 cabs lol. Here's a link to his rig rundown: www.mixdownmag.com.au/gear-rundown-kurt-cobain
@@DroneCorpse yh in terms of recording he used really expensive stuff on stage he occasionally used really cheap strat copies to smash up along with his $1000 jaguars and $700 mustangs
@Sahr 666 do some actual research and you'll know that their gear isn't cheap.
@Sahr 666 it takes a lot of money to look that cheap.
finally an episode for without busting the bank for normal people lol
True!
My same thought
So... Should it be "busting the normal peoples bank and not busting normal peoples bank" ? :)
This sounds a like I can get behind. Sounds good and it’s actually something us normal can buy.
All this while here I was thinking most people had a thousand plus pounds for gear
How about a series called "Play like" or something, where Pete & Rabea teach us different techniques and playing styles of bands!?
ArtWizardSam this
Excellent shout. I've enjoyed Andertons videos for ages, but there's only so many blindfolded and gibson vs epiphone videos you can watch. It would be good to do more practical videos like playing behind a singer, playing in a jam session, constructing a solo, using pa etc

Great idea. Would love to see them highlight techniques.
Yes!

seriously, this is odd, this is literally just my guitar rig i use for everything
Great rig you've got there! If you get a delay for solos, and an overdrive to boost the ds1 you'll have a really good sound i think.
That's pretty much Kurt Cobain's rig, lol. You're authentic as hell.
@@swissarmyknight4306 well, it's pretty much one of the cheapest rigs there is, so it's obvious that a lot of people is gonna use that gear, specially the ones that are starting out and don't know what they are actually buying.
N / A same😂
Nothing wrong with keeping it simple! Less to go wrong for one thing...
I'm pretty sure Kurt Cobain sounded like Kurt Cobain for under $500. ;-)
@Great Satan Don't be so contrarian. To get it right, NOW would be thousands... My point was, when he bought all that stuff, he was broke and spent nothing on his gear. The reason all that stuff costs so much now, is it's "vintage" and because he used it.
Great Satan for nevermind kurt used a AC30 a fender bassman and his mesa boogie with the ds1 small clone and supposedly a big muff. Once in a while during live shows he was seen using Rats when he broke his ds1’s.
well under $500 in the early 90's was closer to $1000 in today's money.
@Nilly Sigger to be fair, he had an undiagnosed medical condition that had he been getting treatment would've been medicated w/ medication equivalent to the heroin he was already taking. Also a not insignificant portion of people who deal with chronic pain end up taking their own lives, especially if they are forced to self-medicate.
When you consider that they got Butch Vig as their producer for Nevermind it's actually more possible that there were a wider range of equipment available for them to use in the studio, and his input too on helping Kurt get the sound he wanted. There are some really good interviews and vids about the making of nevermind
4:42
Matt: " So were on about 420"
Rabea: 😏😏😏
Matt had no clue
I'm glad I'm not the only one who picked up on Bea's amusement
"High flying quality" too.
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Speaking of grunge: Alice in Chains BY busting the bank
G&L Rampage
Friedman JC Head and Cab
Dunlop JC95 (Man In The Box solo)
MXR M222 (Man In The Box)
Dunlop Rotovibe (Rooster)
MXR Chorus (Hung on a Hook)
that should be enough
Maybe they could try for an Ultimate Grunge Rig too
though I personally am not a fan of the Ultimate Rig videos I do like to write song titles for their jams cos i'm nice gal
Impossible ...try Mudhoney!
Yessss 🙏
Gonna be an expensive bustling with the Friedman and the G&L
"That leaves change for some picks a lead and a gig bag?"
Nah. That leaves change for pizza and beer .
Ok so let's get the gear straight:
1- The Shittiest mustang or tele you can find. 100€ tops
2- A Broken amp who has buzz and a distortion feel even in the cleanest preset possible - 80€ tops
3- All the Anger of a teenager and lots of weed
Pedro Lantyer and lots more heroin
What about sad family background?
And a shot gun
Pedro Lantyer I felt this
Scuff Alot Jesus dude but yea add a little bit suicidal and boom
Next time I play a gig, I'm setting my pedal on a table and hammering down it like Thor, just like Rabea did. Much more entertaining than stepping on it.
Alex Hamel hahaha right on!
Totally! Love it
This should actually be really easy.
Sean M not as easy when buying a brand new guitar, less options.
@@drmofcali4niktun cheapest squire strat u can get...
Sometimes replicating a simple set up Is harder because every variable has to be spot on.
Sean M good luck finding a decent amp and all the pedals kurt uses. Pedals alone would rack up 300 minimum
Seriously, what's with the "buy it" being whispered in the video from 0:43 onward?
Charlie HJ that’s really creepy I didn’t even notice
Oh shit! I hear it too! That’s so weird.... what gives?!
I heard it 4 times. That’s odd. Attempting to be subliminal????
It happens again at 1:33 as well. Repeats multiple times.
Interesting...
The squire mustang bullet is an amazing guitar for the money . It’s definitely in my collection and I use it daily!
as is the Squire Jag, just swap out the bridge with a mustang bridge because the ones they're shipped with are terrible
Sound like Nirvana with seven dollars and fifty cents: find any guitar and amp
Love Rabea's face when Matt says that puts us around 420.....so mischievous! Love this series!
Sounds like J Mascis or Kevin Shields!!!
Absolutely 👍👍👍

The Cure- no budget.
The video would consist of these two guys breaking into Chapman's house and stealing his gear.
Though i suppose most associated with jazzmasters, he has pretty much played everything, so just need good clean amp and wxcellent flanger pedal
Tears and leftover hairspray... job's a good'n
Schecter Ultracure + Fender Jazzmaster (and maybe a Schecter Simon Gallup Bass or Reverend Reeves Gabrels)
Roland JC40 and a Fender combo
EHX Electric Mistress
Strymon Volante because it's an immense reverb
and a Strymon Delay because you can never have too little or too much delay
Robert Smith is literally all boss pedals plus his signature and I think it’s a fender amp (could be wrong)
This was far, far closer to Kurt’s sound than on the “without busting version.” Regarding your conversation about whether Kurt used humbuckers or single coils and what he used in the studio, he almost always used cheaper fender guitars with humbuckers in them that he installed himself. In the studio he was known for using HSS strats.
His cheap fender is about 1600usd new now
I feel like we are slowly getting closer to a Dinosaur Jr video.
That rig is awfully close to his actual live rig. Drop a DiMarzio Super Distortion in the bridge and it will sound even closer.
IIRC Kurt was fond of the DiMarzio HS2 if I have the model number right? It's long discontinued but similar to the Evolution neck pickup. Brighter and more harmonics than a super distortion. The Evolution neck and bridge pickups are very similarly voiced though, the main difference being the pole spacing.
I think that to get kurts Gear correct it depends what era, but I’m pretty sure the there not going for the bleach era (1989 -1990) because there choosing mustangs which Kurt used in the European and US In Utero tour, but to get kurts exact mustang sound you need one of his signature mustangs, which will set you back about £1000 or more, during the recording of in utero he also used his sunburst jaguar (£1000 - more) and he also used Steve albinis guitar for a couple of tracks but we won’t include that one. he used a poly chorus pedal (£300-400) and a boss ds2 distortion pedal (£50) and as for amps, 1982 Fender Twin Reverb Silverface (for the recording of in utero, £800 or more) Fender '68 Custom Twin Reverb (recording of in utero, £1449),
Fender Quad Reverb Amplifier, and Marshall Plexi 100 (both for recording of in utero, and both are £1,702, and £1500 - more)
So me personally to get the true nirvana sound, those are the guitars you need (for the 1993-1994 sound)
Nevermind will be 30 years old next year. I know Kurt grew to have mixed feelings about it but even now the intro to Smells Like Teen Spirit makes my heart jump just a little bit faster.
Please, please, please make “how to sound like Pixies”!!!
It's funny that, in Brazil, 1 pound is like 5 BRL, SO, 500 is 2.5k BRL, which can afford us only the Squier lol
Usada com sorte, né hahahaha
Infelizmente é isso msm
really? Are your wages adjusted for that then? For example, on minimum wage here in uk, you could work a couple of days and buy that guitar
@@renhoek3851 No! Minimum wage here is around 1k BRL per month... which would be like 200 pounds or 220 US dolars. We have a 60% tax on imports. =(
por um pouco menos de 2700 reais, eu achei a squier (1550) e os dois pedais(319 e 800), mas o amp sozinho eu encontrei por volta 3000 reais.
guitar, neo clone and ds-1 cost a little less than 2700 brl, which converts to 540 pounds. the amp by itself costs 3000 brl, or 600 pounds, so rip budget.
Well I've never heard of any guitarist that wanted to sound like Nirvana tbh
The way Bea stared at the camera when Matt said 420 lmao
Accidently started watching this with the subtitles on...comedy gold, my favourite being Kurt Cobain Aka Cocoa Bone....
The chorus sounds beautiful.
Indeed. And the distortion + amp sounds terrible, like chemical vomit. But Rabea saves it with perfect guitar play.
@@eddie4maiden Are you joking? It sounds great, especially the cleans with the chorus and the DS-1 just sounds gnarly as hell, as it should, for that money you literally couldn't get it any better than this. But everyone's entitled to their own opinion ofcourse.
Frankly with this video you got closer to grunge sound than in your last Nirvana video!!! good job guys.......I think I have seen every single episode of sound like during the pandemic lol
Activating the DS-1 with your fist was smooth, I see you Rabea. 👀
My most giggable rig is an actual rig I use. Boss Katana 50, the 1 speaker version, Burns Cobra at £150, and either a spark mini or Blues Driver for solos. Have also done nothing but the amp and guitar when the pedal board busted during a gig once. Did the whole thing with volume and tone control as a 1 guitar band. Total of £350 for that rig.
I’ve been using my DS1 for a decade now - tone and gain rolled all the way off.
Gets u that angry muddy modern Blues Rock tone like Tyler Bryant or JJN!
Give it a try friends !;)
thank you! The ds1 is underrated as a bluesy light gain option
Used the ds1 exactly that way (well gain 9 o clock) and loved it... until I checked a ds2 - apples bananas kind of thing, I know, but I really love it with similar settings. There is something to it, no other OD pedal can give you (especially with Strat and low output humbucker)
the DS pedals always keep that fizzy high end even if u dial everything all the way back. It’s a love or hate it kinda thing and that’s mostly where the magic lies^^
People laugh at my DS1 on my board untill they hear it. Same settings for me. Sometimes stacked with a tube screamer running on an absolute minimal gain/level setting.
Totally reignites my love for watching ‘without busting the bank’.
Three thumbs up
Pleas do sound like The Hives 🤟
Yes! I want this too!
YES PLEASE DO THIS
YES! they were awesome!
Hell yeah
Tele, LP jr with a p90, fender Hot Rod deluxe, prunes and custard
Come As You Are was spot on!
Please bring back sounds like!
I love Kurt’s playing but I am also really happy that you guys included a rig for Krist Novoselic, he’s one of my favourite bassists and definitely underrated. As for suggestions, I’ll say my usual Ghost, K-On and Robby Krieger but for an interesting challenge I’ll also say Bloodhound Gang, while they have some “interesting” lyrics I recently discovered that their songs have some killer guitar riffs
don't forget Alex Lifeson & Geddy Lee of Rush with unlimited budget
@@KeeperOfPoops They should definitely do an Alex Lifeson By Busting so they can use an ES-335 for Al and a Rickenbacker for Geddy since they both used those in the early days of Rush (and they're guitars both men are known for using)
The second video is closer and better than the first video. Well Done !!!
Sound like Burzum for 5000pounds
Lol they would have about 4800 pounds left over I would think. Haha.
@@allstopblue5717 For 5K quid you could probably build the entire studio where the albums were recorded, mics, guitar, bass, amps, full drum kit, and the recording gear, and probably have some left over for a knife or two 😂😂 You can save crucial funds by not having to buy a double kick pedal, too! Varg just double-tracked a single kick and spaced them to sound like a double kick 😁
100 for a guitar, 50 for an amp, 2000 for survival materials and the rest on medieval war gear.
OscarBo 5000€ for a lada Niva
Rabs face @ 4:47 when Matt says "We're at about 420". He knew.
"For UNDER £500" Wouldn't that lend the most authentic sound? jk
This is much better than the "without busting a bank" take. Excellent choice of equipment in terms of everything (would've literally gone for the same exact things as you guys) and it sounds authentic.
I really like this rig, actually. If I had a son, I would absolutely buy him this exact gear to get started. It's way better than what I had!
The heart of Kurt Cobain's sound is the Boss DS-1 (later replaced by Boss DS-2) and the EHX Small Clone Chorus live and in the studio. Occasionally he may use a Ratt or a Muff Pi, Usually for just one or two songs. He used a Poly Chorus but only on one or two songs. Even when he did Mtv Unplugged he still used DS-1and Small Clone Chorus. He also usec his Fender amp disguised as a floor monitor. The speakers in his amp cabs are Celestrian T705 when going thru his mesa boogie preamp in his live rig.
I remember not liking the "Nirvana on a budget", but I think the main thing that was lacking was bass - when Bea hit the dirt in Smells like Teen Spirit, it felt really weak because the bass is a huge part of the sound of that riff.
This time, it was all going so well until In Bloom, because the drums are three-quarters of that particular riff.
Beyond that, this one worked well.
My affordable rig:
-Hondo II les paul junior clone
-blockrocker 100watt amp without pre-amp
-pre-amp and equalizer pedal....
It works live but the pedal makes any set of somewhat equalizer friendly speakers sound amazing
Like these budget rigs episodes but wish they would spend longer choosing the gear, in real life we take ages lol. Please do sound like Offspring
Yes, Offspring!
Wow this was great u guys got really close! Got the vibe right
"we're at about 420" *Bea looks into the camera and smiles*
When you said: ‘it’s about 420.’ At 4:43, I had the same smirk on my face as you guys hahah. We men just never truly grow up😂
Nice guys. I love the fact that it's pretty easy to get a good Nirvana tone. Just need a Fender guitar and a little amp with some built in distortion and/or 1 or 2 pedals.. But I just wanted to say though, when you played In Bloom, it sounded like you were playing it through an old Big Muff lol.
I'd probably would've gone for the Mooer version of the ds2, I checked the Andertons site and it was £3 more than the boss ds1, yet £4 less than the actual ds2.
I once jammed with a guy who's sound was based on Cobain's, and he did play an Orange, but that Fender was cool as well!
Great video, guys!
6:48 9:06 like how he is using the pedals. The bud Spencer of music
Hi guys. Greetings from Germany. First of all I'd like to say how enjoyable your show is. Everytime I'm watching a new episode, I can't wait for the next one. You're doing a great job. Keep up the good work. Here are some suggestions for new episodes:
Bruce Springsteen, Matchbox 20, Kaleo, The Kooks, Kaiser Chiefs
RAT pedals are pretty cool too to approach nirvana's tones
i know he did use a Pro Co Rat at one point, as well as a Big Muff on Lithium and a DS2 on the In Utero album
@@KeeperOfPoops he used it on Territorial Pissings
He switched from DS1/DS2 to Tech21 SansAmp later on
I love RAT pedals. Even the super affordable Mosky clones. Although Cobain was very much a Boss DS1/DS2 guy (or "Roland" as he always called them), me myself I loved that dirty wallop that RAT style pedals give you. You can't get better than the EHX Clone for chorus though. What a pedal.
FYI, someone mentioned that he used a RAT on Territorial Pissings - I was always led to believe that on this song Cobain plugged his guitar straight into the recording desk. That's from memory though.
Owen Andrew I agree. That’s the ONE pedal I’ve struggled to find a clone one do well. Distortion, reverb, overdrive, fine clone choices out there. The chorus clones I’ve heard sound, well, a little weedy to me. The Twinote chorus is the best I’ve found but it’s cannot compare to EHX.
The settings for the ds1 are: gain at max, tone at around 11 o clock and max level. You did a great job though
The Fender Champion is THE budget amp. So many voicings and effects built in, my best amp friend for many years
Baroness next guys, it’s time.. I’ve been asking for like 3+yrs haha
Considering that back in the late 80's / early 90's things cost a lot different than today. Even when the record label fronted Nivana hundreds of thousands of dollars when they began to record Nevermind, Kurt was still very frugal. Some of the more expensive gear was purchased by Kurt when he pawned his step-fathers guns after his mom caught her husband cheating on her. She tossed them away and Kurt fished them out.
why not try some more Ultimate Rig Videos
like an Ultimate Grunge Rig, or an Ultimate Psychedelic Rock Rig, maybe even an Ultimate Stoner/Doom Metal rig
Grunge and psychedelic would be awesome, yeah
Stoner and Doom would be awesome to see but I don't think they'd be able to do it because of the volume needed
@@wesleyzimmerman94 For the most part I think you'd just need to get a fuzz pedal and turn up the tone and gain (or Sustain if they use a Big Muff) knobs all the way
@@andrewpappas9311 That'd help quite a bit but that cranked amp, speaker being push to its limit kind of sound is needed for a lot of Doom and Stoner
Wesley Zimmerman Yeah
Great shot at it. Pretty much nailed it
My favourite bands are:
The Beatles, Nirvana, Metallica, Steel Panther, The Rolling Stones, AC/DC
I currently own Kurt's signature Jag and it is awesome and I have an Epiphone Casino. These are two guitars I highly recommend the Casino play like butter I recommend it to any hardcore Beatles guitar geek!

William Allison it was a joke you clown
@@KeeperOfPoops I'd love to see them do a Beatles By Busting so they can focus more on the band's later tones on albums like _The White Album,_ _Abbey Road_ and _Let It Be,_ they could also get a red Gibson Les Paul Standard for George Harrison and a natural Epiphone Casino for John Lennon (still baffles me that they didn't just use a Casino in the first place since both Harrison and Lennon played them and are really well-known for those guitars), and maybe they could also get either Nathan or Lee from All About the Bass to do Paul McCartney's lines (also with a Rickenbacker since Macca used it pretty extensively during the later half of the band's career)
Great vid guys. Long live the DS-1.
Kurt was known to scavenge thrift shops and other second hand vendors for his gear.
So buying you can probably get even cheaper, by trying to buy it all second hand.
Part of the challenge of this show is they don't allow themselves to buy secondhand stuff it's all new
But he didn’t buy the cheapest crap second hand.
Problem is a lot of the stuff he bought then was a lot more cheaper due to inflation
THANK YOU for including the bass. The Rumble 40 is a serious box of juicy goodness.
Please do Karnivool next
12:43 Big fan of their cover of Lithium. Great demo guys!
Kurt played a solid state Randall in the early days.
Yes 🤘
Not a lot to choose from. Having lived in a small logging town in the Pacific Northwest myself, I can reassure you it took work to hunt down gear back then
Damn that’s crazy. I did not know that. Proves it all begins with the mind and creativity I suppose. Dude could write some songs no doubt.
This sounds better than the other
Sound like Death From Above 1979
Much better. The Small Clone (even according to Butch Vig) is essential for getting the correct chorus/clean tone from Nevermind.
Can you do a Sound like Toska on a budget perhaps?
Why does people think Curt Cobain didn't care about his gear. Nirvana has one of the most recognized sound and Curt mostly played Mustang. It doesn't need to be bad gear or cheap just because they didn't buy new.
I’m pro katana. It’s got a DS1 built in... or at least I’m fairly sure it does.
As an owner, I can confirm it does
the katana has all of the boss pedals built in as far as memory goes

Grunge was a weird construction of punk, noise, fun and angst. The equipment didn't really matter just so long as you had something and at a live show in a club it was mostly Incredibly loud, followed by soft but full distortion slightly muted, and then back to full on take your head off noise. It was a great time to be involved in music!! I have to say though more than everything you guys put together, that Epiphone Bass was a complete stunner!!, Not only did it sound nice and beefy, but that neck is just bloody fantastic looking. I don't know how it played but I'd be willing to put down my p-bass and have a go with it!!
DS1’s today are not the DS1s Kurt was using there’s no way, they’re like needle pokey distortion these days instead of rich mid range
Okay so it's not just me thinking they're dogshit now
They were always shit if you just use their own distortion. Kurt played a lot of different but mostly amazing tube amps and Mixed their distortion with the pedal.
Brilliant as always. Sound like whoever you want. I'll still watch it.
I thought it sounded great guys. It’s Nirvana and grunge, so it has to have that trashy sound, which it does - particularly the Squier Bullet Mustang. But a good trashy - and using Cobain’s two pedals - the DS1 and the Clone - basically gets you there.
For the record, Kurt Cobain’s gear is pretty well documented. He played a couple HH Jaguars with Dimarzio Super Distortion Pups, Mustangs with Seymour Duncan JBs in the bridge, mustangs and strats with Hot Rails, and strats with JB’s and ‘59 pups. He also used Univox High Flyers with P90s iirc. Live he mainly played into a mesa boogie studio 22 preamp, crest audio 4801 poweramp going to a bunch of marshall cabs. He had a broken fender twin or quad reverb (one of the two) he recorded in utero with..
So, it’s not exactly hard to know.
Request for either The Damned, Volbeat, The Cramps - thanks
Captain Sensible is a genius and long overdue for a good ol' punk hoe down.....!
