Line 6 Chief Product Design Architect and Helix/HX mastermind Eric Klein reveals the previously undisclosed history of the Helix guitar processor in great detail. Eric shares dozens of images of early Helix mock-ups and prototypes, describes the ways in which the design evolved over time, and also explains how the development of Helix informed the design of HX Effects, HX Stomp, and even POD Go. Plus, he spotlights some less well-known Helix features, including how to use Helix footswitches as a transport control for RUclips videos!
This live-streamed presentation was part of the Yamaha Guitar Development Open House, held on August 13, 2020, in which Line 6 and Ampeg also participated.

I just want to say thank you to everyone at Line6 who made Helix the great product it is. Thank you for listening to your customers and providing us with great updates with features we suggest. I couldn't be happier with the Helix.

What an interesting video of the History of Helix and it's development. I've had my HX Stomp for almost 3 years, and every year it improves with the frequent and useful Firmware Updates. Thanks Line 6, and the RUclips Algorithm for suggesting this video.

I was in the market for a modeler some months ago deciding to take the plunge after steering clear for years because I just didn't think the technology was up to par. I feel it is finally viable after two decades of waiting. I spent weeks taking a deep dive watching comparison videos for days on end and I started to notice the trend that all of the units seemed to be this unit vs. Helix and that unit vs. Helix, so I figured Helix was the measuring stick. All of the various units sounded damn good and all had their own pluses, selling points and niches. I really zeroed in on the Helix for the clean tones and the fact that Line 6 really seems engaged with all of their units offering constant updates and upgrades which means the unit is just going to get better and better with time. I've owned the Helix floor for a few months now and I'm loving it. Best gear purchase I've made in years.

Helix is a beast, i still think it's the best on the market considering his adsurd flexibility and reasonable price. Use it everyday in every way possible, as a splitter, hot keyboard, fx processor, loop switcher.. you name it, i tried it.

Thanks for sharing this. Really interesting. A good product lives through the years. So much software upgrades let me think that buying helix it's been a really good investment. Not only some new amps or effects, but some really important features. This means that originally the device was ready for future improvements. Proud about this machine. Good job!

Helix LT user here! Fantastic piece of gear. Without any doubt, it's the most perfect multi fx I've had. BUT, you MUST add PROFILING. I enjoy and feel better playing new Mooer iPad profiles than helix amp sims. And second, polyphonic pitch shifting, just the way Kemper does. The rest is just perfect. If you're able to add these things with the actual hardware, no competition can beat Helix.

Have you wrote some articles about your process of development? Love to read/hear about your development story. Love to show your story as a good example of hardware increment work. Keep going guys.

Awesome video! I love the nerdy details. I was an original POD user, and then I took a break from emulation for a while... the HX Stomp is the product got me back into emulation. The Helix tech is very good... I do think there's room for improvement in some of the cab emulation, but since we can load our own IR files, that's not much of an issue. I use my Stomp exclusively at this point - my amps are collecting dust.

Eric, the Variax controls made it simple for me to upgrade from my HD500X. Makes my life so simple yet so complicated LOL. But seriously, it's so much easier to perform without having to make changes on guitar itself, just do it by snapshot. You guys are the greatest musical company ever. Can't wait to see 3.0.

  • @peterschut63

Hi Eric, I have the Helix Rack + controller already since 2016, and It is a great machine. Unfortunately I don't play enough. But I wanted to tell you that the Helix UI has inspired me when we developed a very powerful uncompressed Video Processor (handling up to 100Gb/s video data or over 8000 audio channels. It was a real pleasure to watch the process and the design steps that I am confronted with in many new design stages. I would love more of these maybe on other hardware selections of the Helix.
As a gear junkie, would the Helix sonically benefit from a Yamaha SPX2000 (to stay in the family) in a digital effects loop?
    Thanks

Does the continuous development mean that we not only can expect a huge touchscreen but also the beloved profiling feature to capture exactly the sound of physical rigs like in the Kemper or like in the new and "more modern version of the Helix" from a different company - the Neural Quad Cortex?

I’m interested in if the Helix will get a hardware upgrade anytime soon? As we’re approaching 6 years. What’s the usual time frame for these upgrades? I’ve just heard of people not having enough DSP power with some of the great software updates, in term of added new effects to old patches. Any help would be great. Thanks. As tech reviewer loved to history of development.
