The movie to follow up to this is DARK CITY from the same year with more or less the same concept just from the “Demiurge” elite point of view. It actually inspired both The Matrix & Inception. It’s a cult masterpiece. 🎥🍿👽
The Game 2007 is kind of similar, in a way.. great movie!!
If you were unsatisfied with the ending, that was the point.
You don't get to see how his life turns out because the cameras arent following him anymore.
I’d like to think Cable Guy is the unofficial and darker sequel to The Truman Show. Poor Truman was so used to living his life in the dome he never was fully prepared for the real world and his whole life was so revolved around television, he himself made television as his persona. lol

The part that always gets me is the cops just finding something else to watch on tv once The Truman Show ends. This man’s whole life was a lie in order to create entertainment for the masses, and when his life comes crashing down it’s like it doesn’t even matter because there’s something else on tv.
Yeah, that line always sticks with me. It might have been the most cynical part of the movie.

There is a deleted scene that had his friend Marlon, during the big search at night, comes across Truman as he's trying to escape. They lock eyes and after a few seconds, Marlon shouts "TRUMAN, where are you?" and continues the search, letting him get away to the boat.
i wish they’d kept that in! it really shows his humanity.
omg i wish they had kept this in !!! it made no sense to me why his "dad" wouldn't be on Truman's side after breaking the rules just to see him
There's also another one where Christof mentions to the cast that once Truman's child is born, he'll have his own live channel as well, and Marlon snaps "so when Truman dies we go back to single channel right?" Kinda showing how uncomfortable he's becoming.
Plus there's a lot of backstory in the supplementary materials for him, that he was a child actor who couldn't get much work, then as an adult he had issues with alcoholism, which is why according to Truman he left to travel the world - in reality he was in rehab

Absolutely, he was the highest paid Hollywood actor at one point.
I love Jim Carrey as much as the next guy, and he's particularly good in The Cable Guy, but imo Tom Hanks is the best actor to have ever lived. Carrey is definitely under rated as a serious actor, this film shows that in spades.
The face Truman makes when he hugs his dad is not tears of joy, it’s when he realises that all his suspicions have finally been confirmed, everything really is fake
If you really think about it, Marlon is almost as trapped as Truman is. He’s been Truman’s best friend his entire life, meaning the actor has spent almost just as much time on camera as Truman has. He’s a side character, but his entire life has been on camera too.

If he and Truman's memories are to be believed, Christof let Truman essentially cause Marlon to get pneumonia at the age of like 7. So yeah, he was on the show as a child, and the crew clearly cared more about the show than his health.
@@magdaghirma Yes. Him and Truman were friends since childhood, so Marlon has lived his entire life in seahaven just like Truman. Sure, he was aware that everything was fake, but he was still under contractual obligation to live his whole life there.
@@roddo1955I mean, if he was a child actor, can we truly be certain that he was fully aware of the moral ramifications of what he wa getting into? For that matter, did he even truly have a choice? What if his parents pushed for him to have this role? Can a child truly understand just how messed up something is, if the adults around him treat it like it's something amazing and fun?
He was probavly just as conditioned to accept his own reality as Truman was. Just because he was aware and could consent, that doesn't necessarily mean that he had a choice in the beginning.
It wasn't until he grew up that he realized that, no, this is wrong and the people around him are awful for accepting this. But to go against them would be to throw away everything he's worked for his entire life. Not to mention, it would mean leaving Truman. He saw what losing his father did to Truman. It's reasonable to assume that he would continue to play along, purely so that he can be their for his friend.
Because, as the director said: Truman was real. Their friendship - though one side of it was scripted - was at least half real. Going by the deleted scenes, the friendship was probably 100% real.
So, I don't think he's a bad person. He's the product of what adults turned him into.

I'm sorry but which are those meanings and in what way are they hidden? The manipulation of reality through media and the discussion fo personal freedom are rather obvious, aren't they? And once you know Plato's cave allegory it's also not too far fetched to see the resemblance.

@@michaelklaus Offer-and-demand. If the show wasn’t such a success and had high audience rates, it wouldn’t exist/ would’ve ceased existing. All the viewers are complicit of it and it’s weird how they cheer for his freedom, while having been the ones taking it away from him in a way.
One of the coolest details of the film is that, in almost every shot in Seahaven, you can see what looks like a black orb embedded in something, like a concrete post or a wall or a sign. Sometimes there's even multiple in the same shot. The idea is... they're all cameras, ad once you start seeing them, you can't STOP seeing them, and you realise just how deeply observed Truman's life really is.
Also, in the script, it's shown that Marlon (Truman's best friend) actually hates what's being done, but can't bring himself to do anything to stop it. In the end when Truman escapes, there was a scripted scene where Marlon basically 'caught' him, but then let him go and claimed he hadn't seen anything. I really wish it'd been kept in the film, since it adds a lot of extra dimension to what is otherwise a fairly flat character.
And the deleted scene where the “cast” is meeting and Marlon says something about if Truman dies, they’d just go back to the one camera for the baby

I love this movie. It came out in 1998 and predicted so much about reality TV, vlogging and livestreaming.
It manifested the future
The following year the movie "Ed TV" did more of that, and arguably predicted the current situation because the protagonist was fully aware and chose to do it. Starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. Directed by Ron Howard.
People have mentioned how Marlon actually hated doing this to Truman. Remember how Marlon has been in this since childhood and has also been a victim of the show. If you notice, he always has drinks. It's thought that he drinks to numb the guilt. There was a time he was away, where he was supposedly travelling, when he was actually in rehab for drink and substance dependency.
Also, notice the Director's name is Christof, as in Christ.
There's also the mention that he's left Seahaven often to travel the world - in reality it's to accommodate his stints in rehab, which are of course undone by them using his character to advertise beer
Christoff= off Christ. Its a deliberate play on Christoff playing for god/Christ. He pretends to care for Truman and that his intentions are good. But he is using Truman for personal gain. He is off-Christ: Anti Christ. And television is his church and look at all those 'worshippers' pretending to care about him....
The name may also be a nod to the Romanian artist Christo, who was most famous for wrapping major buildings and landscapes in fabric.
"Fun" fact: You can find lots of vitamin-D around in the movie, that is ofcourse because can't have actual sunlight, which would give you your daily need of Vitamin-D

I truly feel that Jim at the very least deserved a Oscar nomination for this movie and probably should have won
Honestly the biggest reason he probably hasn't earned one is literally only because he's so openly critical of the Oscars, the Academy, and Hollywood in general. Once he got up on stage during an Oscars ceremony and literally just joked about how dumb the whole thing was and they all knew it and were only there because they were paid to be there and then he left lol. He's one of the best and realest guys in the industry, but that's precisely why the industry doesn't reward him. And to be fair idk if he'd want it anyway, it's just a trophy from an organization he doesn't even respect. Dude's a millionaire who gets to do whatever he wants in life, that's the true victory.
13:03 I didn’t find Truman secretly recreating the girl’s face via scraps from magazines creepy at all.
It was like he was in prison (which he literally was - both physically & mentally), and these scraps of paper were all he had to cling to some sort of hope… to keep her memory alive inside him.
The fact that the actual girl in question got to watch him cling to his memory of her - over ALL those years - was the best! ❤
And also 35:13 when Truman is out at sea 🌊 & takes out her recreated face again… she and the whole world see that moment! 🥹
You’re one of the first reactors I’ve seen whose recognized that Marlon hates himself for lying to Truman. A lot of people are pissed off about it and blame Marlon but from what they say in the movie, he’s been in this himself at least since he was a child. There’s a fair chance that he can’t even work outside of the Seahaven dome. He might have been one of the babies that wasn’t born on time for the show premier or a kid in the foster care system or his parents committed to this and he wasn’t given a choice. Whatever the case, he’s been Truman’s friend for years and unlike his wife, Marlon actually seems to like him.
And in that one scene, I swear he and Truman are communicating with their expressions because Marlon says he’d have to be in on it and Truman has this devastated look like he realizes he’s right, he would… because he is. It’s like Marlon gave him this pointed look at just that line as if to say, “Truman, I’m in on it.” And the message lands and it hurts.
Fun Fact seb... If you remember that scene at 15:40 when Truman goes to see his friend.. you can see that his friend is acting.. Things he was putting in the shelf he tooks back and then put it again just to make his work longer so truman can finish and he doesn't have any other task in queue.. so he doesn't know what to do that's why he just wait
This is a great, if not, a creepy, dark, but also a heartfelt movie about what would happen if you find out your life was a reality TV show and you didn't know about it.

the really cripplingly sad realization is that during the singular raincloud that follows truman on the beach is; on first watch you would think "yeah this is undenyable evidence that the worlds fake." but truman has lived in this handcrafted world in a bottle with people gaslighting him about every single aspect of it, so anyone could just say "what do you mean truman? it wasnt raining just on you" and gaslight him into believing it
Or they could be like "yeah I hate when that happens" like it's normal, he has no other frame of reference so they could make him think that's a thing that sometimes happens

Truman’s fear of water was due to the death of his father. When his father returned, that significantly reduced his fear and they didn’t pick that up - which is why they weren’t watching the boats.
The fake sky wall at the end is at Universal studios in LA. It is typically used in a much less fake way.
i love thinking that the studio didnt make Marlon the alcoholic character, it was his own choice. He went down that path when he found out growing up that becoming friends with Truman was a scripted friendship
i swear Jim Carrey's comedic films are so childish and goofy but his more serious story driven ones are just so damn Good. Truman Show, Number 23 , Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind.

He is such a great dramatic actor I really wish he didn't waste his time on childish crude humor. He did a TV mini-series back in the day called "Doing Time on Maple Drive" (1992) where he played an alcoholic. It was a masterful performance. I hated his comedic stuff ever since. He is a talented man.
On the kitchen counter, theres a jar of Vitamin D pills, because nobody's getting any real sunlight from living on the set.

It's amazing how much more relevant this film is now than it was when it came out - your reaction really underscores that. Jim Carrey's performance is so incredible, layered, and nuanced. I'm thrilled you loved this film, it's such a wonderful meditation on our modern world.

Good job critically analyzing a great film, Seb! I know you were worried about reading into it too much, but you were right the whole time. This is basically a retelling of Adam leaving the garden of Eden while God sits overhead arranging and controlling everything, supposedly for Adam's (Truman's) own good, though that level of control isn't borne out by Truman's happiness (or lack thereof). Lauren is Eve, tempting Truman toward freedom. Free will vs. obedience. And it's absolutely brilliant. Seb asked "how do these people sleep at night?" A good question when it comes to any story about a higher power exerting control, for our own good or not.
There are critical differences... between Truman going toward his freedom, vs. the story of Adam leaving (being expelled from, actually) the Garden of Eden:
Firstly, as I understand the Garden of Eden story, while Adam was "told that he should not eat the forbidden fruit"... I do not remember any painful and life-threatening obstacles getting in his way of actually eating the fruit (UNLIKE what we saw in The Truman Show with Truman getting to the edge of his dome).
Secondly, the consequences of Adam actually eating the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden story... those consequences, as I understand therm, turned out to be "not so desirable" to Adam. But on the other hand, the consequences of Truman leaving his dome are "inconclusive" since we don't get to see if he "stayed happy" at his freedom... for all we know, he turned out perfectly happy (or not, but we don't know which).
Thirdly, despite the Truman Show director's CLAIMS that he "cared about Truman", it was obvious to the viewer that he mainly cared about the show for his own selfish reasons. In contrast, I have seen either a general consensus that the original text of the Garden of Eden story states that the higher power of that text is NOT selfish... or scholars of that text have logically debunked arguments of the opposite conclusion.
So... lots of critical differences, even though it seems like the writers of this film were attempting to draw analogies. They are indeed far-from-perfect analogies lol. I think a better analogy for "The Truman Show" would be a dictatorship government compared to the story about the Garden of Eden, lol.
24:08 The acting is in this is just so good on both their parts. Meryl really feels like she was scared and broke character under pressure, and Truman going crazy is so brilliantly represented too.
6:20 - actually, the really funny thing is... in FLORIDA, USA, rain really CAN behave like that. I know when my mom and I first moved down here (from a more northern region), she said at one point while we were at a street intersection: "What's that over there- is it fog? NO, OMG... it's raining... on the OTHER SIDE OF THE ROAD (only)!" :P

This is one of the BEST movies to re-watch. I've rewatched it sooooo many times since I was little and I always find a new interesting thing that I didn't notice before.
I’d never noticed this before but it looks like the silver ring with the black gem Truman is wearing used to be his dad’s because you can see him wearing it in the scene when they’re both on the boat.
This is one of my favourite movies and bro, the "Cue the Sun." line goes hard.
Even the cars that Truman and his friend drove were ads, ford had not come out with that model year yet when the movie came out.

This movie is gonna be the main part in my presentation I'm going to have on Thursday in politics and how we can translate the shown monitoring, media manipulation and the value of liberty and privacy in this movie, into our daily life. I'm almost done but wanted to take a short break on YT and now I saw you uploaded a reaction to the very movie, that I'm working with 5 hours every day for the last week. Crazy coincidence, smh hahaha.

From Maryl's point of view, it must have been the opposite of a 'noble' experience like she says in the beginning. The creator must have convinced her to play her part even up to the worst moments. She crosses her fingers during their wedding which is a gesture used to nullify promises, so she nullified the whole ceremony for them both. She mentions Fiji before Truman does, exposing that she knows more than she led on. That's why Truman gives a disconcerting look after she mentions it. He would never tell her about his secret goal to visit Fiji and so he is strongly suspicious of her then.
She has to find out that Truman doesn't like her as much as she would want. She would also have to perform sex with him to keep him convinced, almost servicing as an on-air sex worker when you think about it. She feels threatened by him in several ways, forced to try and keep the illusion going while also not feeling anything for him. She calls out for help as he becomes more and more suspicious of her, which she feels even more threatened by. And her last appearance has her screaming 'this is unprofessional', she is finally convinced that her role is entirely inhumane.
Such a good movie, and glad to see your channel doing so well man, here's to further growth!
21:09 yes I felt like that for a very long time. I felt like I was the only person that was real and everybody else was fake. But I grew up and realized how crazy that was but it's still something that goes through our heads because we're living our own lives and it's hard to imagine people out there living their own lives that don't know about ours. i really love your reactions seb, just the right amount of on the nose comedy and honest reaction in combination with a serious topic. its so hard for me to watch this movie, mostly because of gaslighting ive been through. theres a lot of movies i cant enjoy really because their symbolism has meant a whole different lot after years, but ive really enjoyed this.
16:04 - Agent Smith from the Matrix.
It's an interesting similar idea here - where in the Matrix the agents can assimilate and take the place of any person plugged in, all the people in Truman's world are actors, part of the same type of system controlling him. Neo and Truman have very similar situations, at least in terms of their freedom.
Such an absolute underrated classic, one of Careys best films no question. The score is just amazing.
I think this is the movie that made people think that we are in a simulation.

The ending isn’t happy
He is now in a world where everyone knows his deepest darkest secrets. And he know he cannot trust anyone else for the rest of his life
One of my late Dads favourite films, I always forget how good it is. So glad you enjoyed it.
I always thought when watching the movie, that the viewers are as much to blame as everyone else. Yes. They are rooting for Truman, but in the end they are as complicit in it as everyone else. If they would turn off, they could give Truman a normal life. Because if nobody is watching it, there is no benefit in continuing the Truman show. So to blame the Producers and the Creators is the easy way out. But seeing the viewers as complicit and putting blame on ourselves is were it sets itself apart. The movie clearly shows that the viewership is as important in keeping the false reality running as everyone else. But we tend top keep ignoring it, because it would mean questioning ourselves.
That's the big take away from this movie for me at least. Questioning myself and in what way I'm feeding into a machine I don't like myself.

I watched this in lockdown 2020 when I was 14 for the first time, icl the ending made me cry.

RUclips came out in 2005. This movie came out in 1998. This movie brought up topics of the world watching others way before it was even a thing. There wasn't even much reality TV at the time

This movie is very deep, there are so many different levels to it. And whats great about this film is it really gets better with multiple viewings. You notice more and more sibtle things going on each time, its amazing. Probably my favorite Jim Carrey performance.
25:15 theres a deleted scene where he spots Truman while everyone's looking for him, but he says nothing and lets him go.

this is the first video I watch of yours so I don't know if you're really a gaming guy, but if you are: PLEASE check out the game "american arcadia", it's basically the story of truman show but you're helping one of the people in the show escape. it's really nicely stylized and you play as "truman" AND the person helping him.

As someone with a 9-5 desk job, remote (thanks Big C), I highly recommend it LOL. I get to watch TV all day. Watching this movie in the year of family vlogging, it makes me really sad. Those kids don't know they're being put out there the minute after they're born... Gross.
Slight mistake: On your first viewing you are supposed to SKIP the first few minutes (the intro) and figured it out along with Truman. Then you can watch the intro on all repeat viewings since you know already.
He already knew roughly what the movie was about anyways after hearing others talk about it so I doubt it would of made a difference for him
