For some reason, the part that got me was Dustin talking with Eddie’s uncle. The fact that the uncle wouldn’t give up on him and believed his nephew could never murder anybody and was probably dealing with harassment from the people of the town, only to find out his nephew died for them all. Idk why but it hurt
I don’t think she was heartless, just finally realized she didn’t have the relationship with him she thought she did. Personally I also believe that El wasn’t ready to fight One, and I’m pretty sure Brenner actually did care for her as more than just a weapon. But he was never able to overcome his own ambition.
After watching Max's "death" I was very confused because of the symbolism and writing for episode 4's ending as well. But then I kind of realized something related to the metaphor for depression and suicidality: That moment in episode 4 was a metaphor for an attempt at suicide, or at the very least getting to the point of almost attempting one. Max was able to overcome her suicidal ideation by remembering the good times that kept her going and those who love her. She was able to overcome her darkest moment, at least for now. With depression in real life, those we love can help us stay here a little longer, they can help us feel like the storm has passed. But if left untreated, depression will win. In episode 8, Max was willing and open to going back to face Vecna, by allowing him to enter her mind again. This can be seen as a metaphor for letting our guard down when depression starts seeping back into us. During the confrontation, Max attempts to use similar tactics to evade Vecna (aka depression) by hiding within her good memories (the winter dance). But Vecna found his way into those memories as well and slowly sucked the life out of it (the dying flowers and such). Eventually and unfortunately, depression/Vecna takes over her mind. And another part that is true to life is when Max says she isn't ready to die. That could be seen as her regretting her "attempted suicide", which is a VERY common attitude among those who survive suicide attempts. I might be giving the Duffer brothers too much credit with this, but after episode 4 I think they know what they are doing when it comes to writing depression as a metaphor.
Nah because as someone who has been there and suffers from depression and those thoughts. I 100% agree for that. And Sadie really brought that writing and symbolism to life. It’s my favorite writing out of everything else. Yet it was the saddest for me too.

When Max said she wasn’t ready to die, I absolutely broke. How a person can be so depressed and care less about what could happen to them but finally realizing life is so worth it despite the hardships… I’ve never cried harder at a show.
Same here. I think being depressed and suicidal isn't really wanting to die, its wanting things to change and for the vicious cycle to end. At least that's been my personal experience with it.

Every single time I've attempted suicide (5 times so far), I'd almost always regret it around halfway through. I didn't truly want to die, I just wanted my suffering to end, and for the vicious cycle to stop. It was almost always around the 35-45 minute mark after taking the pills that I realized I didn't truly want to die. I was just so fucking sick of the same shit happening over and over again. I just wanted my pain to stop. I related to Max so damn much this season and I'm super glad they decided to keep that part of the plot. It made Max's storyline so much more impactful. I think Max's storyline this season was so incredible it was the best storyline and season yet!!
The actor who plays Lucas absolutely killed the acting during that last episode. You could really feel the pain and loss in his voice. I legit cried for a good 3 minutes first time watching this and still tear up a bit every time I watch it
Only 3 minutes?! I was watching the show with my dad and he was like "are you good?" Cause I was crying so freaking hard. When it was over I still had tears falling out of my eyes for HOURS. We had to watch scooby doo for the rest of the night to get me to stop crying and I'm literally 15😂😂

A THEORY: Running Up That Hill is part of an album called Hounds Of Love by Kate Bush which is literally a conceptual album that tells a story about a girl who falls into a coma and then wakes up. in a song called “Waking The Witch” is where you can hear people trying to wake the girl up (friends & a lover) just like her friends & Lucas and you can hear a demonic voice threatening her that could represent Vecna with Clock sounds in the background. Moreover, the wakin up’s song is called “Hello Earth”, it’s when she finally wakes up and sees how destroyed the earth is, could be a representation of Hawkins, in lyrics that say: “watching storms, start to form, over America. can’t do anything.” the Duffer Brothers are seriously the smartest out there, if they really planned all of this intentionally, for literally telling us how Max would fall into a coma in Ep. 4, if we really paid attention. Eddie was based on Damien Echols so his character arc was always gonna be tragic. Damien was a part of the West Memphis Three, who got caught up in the Satanic Panic and were wrongly accused of and charged with the murders of three young boys. They all went to jail, but Damien was specifically sentenced to death. They all were in jail for 20 years fighting on appeals, Damien on Death row, and new evidence came out proving they were innocent, but the state didn’t want to take accountability so the three each did Alford pleas, meaning they plead guilty while also maintaining their innocence. Eddie’s only options were death or being wrongfully accused of the deaths in Hawkins and sentenced to jail or death.

But when Dustin and crew came for him, he realized there are decent people worth protecting in Hawkins. And that there was way more at stake than just Hawkins if Vecna won. He showed in the end he’s better than what those people think he is, and better than them in general

i had the exact same issue with Eddie i was genuinely convinced that he would break the one season curse, so I was really really upset. watching it back now max's death makes me cry a lot more as a lot of the shock with eddie dying has worn off and now it's just about which death is actually sadder overall. but i think the anger that Ash felt is what i've also seen a lot of other people feel and it's definitely comparable. at the end of the day none of us get why he had to die and you can tell the duffers regret it lmao

The fact that Sadie, Millie, and even Caleb didn't get Emmy noms for their performances this season... is really upsetting. Their acting in S4 has been top tier. And Gaten's sobbing with Eddie... that will rip my heart out anytime I hear it! And Noah... damn, just all the kids at the top of their acting game!
Award shows have been known to not give horror much attention. It’s been a thing. And it’s unfortunate because there’s so many great writers, producers, directors, actors etc involved in making great horror/thriller films. Although for some reason I saw somewhere that this series is listed as Drama. Not sure how true that is since I haven’t seen it for myself. If anything I’d think it would be sci-fi right?
On Max and Billy. Think about how hard it is for her. She knows her brother was a scum bag...then in his last moments he redeems himself and saves her. Completely screwing her perception of him. Then after his death he's seen as a hero to a lot of people despite her knowing how bad he was

Plus the convo with Jonathan was so amazing and I missed their sibling bond in S3, Jonathan knows, he's always known tbh!

And I seriously doubt as a preteen he fully understood what he was feeling. Robin was an adult who it seems has come to terms with her sexuality. Plus She felt she could trust Steve after what they went through season 3 and after he opened up about his feelings towards her. Not to mention they could’ve still been under the influence of the drug they were given. Idk I believe Will was gonna come out to Mike at some point during his trip. He took the painting to the airport. Then they have that awkward interaction where Mike goes for the handshake and Will goes in for the hug. Then after everything following that it’s no wonder will changes his mind and doesn’t say anything. Honestly I’m glad with how they handled Will this season. Not everyone needs a grand coming out ceremony and that unspoken understanding that Will has with Jonathan isn’t that uncommon. With everything that went down the last few episodes I’m glad they didn’t also try to squeeze in a coming out scene. It would’ve felt extremely forced since Wills character was already a bit sidelined this season.

Max’s scene in Lucas’s arm hit really hard. In December of 2021, I had an overdose and woke up in an ambulance unable to hear and was crying to the nurses “I don’t want to die. I’m not ready.” So seeing that scene with Max brought up…a lot.

Max "death" was horrible to me. She didn't go like a hero like Eddie, she was a victim. She went trought so much: depression, she lost her brother. And in the end she didn't even accepted her death. She wanted to live and was begging for it. Now my favorite character it's either gone, or is going to be stuck in a bed for the entire next season.... This show sucks indeed
the only reason im willing to even slightly accept, is that he went crazy from grief after chrissys passing. thats the only slightly redeemable reason.
He is, But he has a reason to be. His girlfriend died last seen with a drug dealer who likes likes ‘demonic’ stuff, of course it would be a lot for him. Then his friend died in front of him and from all that grief he started to make shit up about Eddie. After that he sees one of Eddie’s friends (Lucas) in a house were a crime scene was taken place in (and the house is claimed to be haunted by a demon) Jason sees max who looks like she’s possessed, and tries to wake her up, afraid she will end up like his girlfriend. But I’m not justifying the fact that he didn’t give Lucas a chance to explain, talks from dead people’s perspective when he doesn’t know anything about them, and trying to look like a hero but ending up being mean. People are justifying his actions since people hate him but not Billy, who was a bully, racist and tried to murder CHILDREN for no reason. (Btw I’m explaining Jason’s POV of the situation. And people have opinions which is why some think Jason is a good guy)
I just think we really need to appreciate Ashley‘s editing, because this video was done so fantastically. Anyone who has ever edited before would know that this probably takes her countless hours. It’s always worth it in the end but actually you’re doing a great job!!!

I feel for Eleven. She's 14/15 years old and the fate of everything is on her shoulders all because 1 can't let anything go. And this is the first time in her life she's truly failed at anything. But also what disgusted me this season was Papa and Henry blaming the traumatized child for everything when it was their actions that set everything into motion. Papa couldn't let go of him and kept him around children who were clearly inferior, and Henry, well he's just a psychopath.

@@Alecexo except Henry was already a murderer by that point. He murdered his mother because she was going to send him away. He killed animals to torture his sister. He was a psychopath well before Brenner. He was so fixated on essentially eradicating humanity because he felt everyone was a hypocrite. But as far as we know, his sister Alice was a sweet little girl who hadn’t done anything wrong. And then Henry later groomed Eleven, believing her to be just like him. He murdered a bunch of children who had done nothing to him. And the thing is, he could’ve killed Brenner but didn’t. And he spent all those years in the upside down blaming 11 for what happened and seeking revenge on her which is why he created his monster in season 3 to take her out. Like what do you mean he can’t let anything go? He’s been holding a grudge against a child for years. His anger is well beyond Papa. You could’ve had a case had he gone after Brenner, but that’s not what Henry did. He attacked people (specifically more children) based on their worst perceived wrongs and fears, whilst viewing himself as superior to them all.
Eddie's death felt so pointless to me, he had a whole sacrificial moment that didn't really help. The goal was to distract the bats a little longer but he didn't need to do that and also died immediately so he didn't buy any time. His reasoning of not running anymore was so weird too, running would buy more time and he was already facing the battle by going to the upsidedown in the first place. It was so unnecessary. I was sad that we didn't really get to see people reacting to his death, like Steve or Mike. I also cried at the scene were Dustin talks to Eddie's uncle, that was so sad
@Peppa Pig maybe, but Eddie didn't know that. As far as he was concerned everything was going according to plan and vecna was dying at that very moment. They didn't really express that the bats were an immediate danger for the Nancy crew either.
I assumed he went back to keep them from flying through the portal into their world. If he hadn’t, they almost certainly would’ve chased Eddie and Dustin into the real world, no?
I just lost my brother in law to suicide 3 days ago so watching the ending of this video really got to me. He was in our lives almost 20 years and lived with us practically the whole time. He left one son, and his wife (my sister). It was really hard to watch this one, but it does take my mind off things even just for a little while. Thank you Ash for your uploads and always being there for your viewers even in times of hardship, your channel really does help me feel a little better while i watch.
And the "Big Boy" was improvised. I love when that happens. Directors and writers letting in collaborative creativity with the actors and allowing some improvising is great for any show. At least that's my belief.
i genuinely believe eddie can be brought back in season 5- the single season character is such lazy writing at this point, but a key D&D character that helps take down Vecna is Vecna's undead right hand man, Kas the Bloodyhanded. Kas is a vampire that is Vecna's puppet before betraying him and being pivotal in his downfall in the game. If they truly want to miror the characters of dungeons and dragons Eddie fits perfectly as Kas. The theme of being a puppet with playing Master of Puppets along with his tattoo of the creature being conrtolled by a hand with strings is big for Eddie's character, potentially a hint that he may be used as Vecna's right hand man. Kas is an undead vampire, with the symbolism of eddie being killed by bats, his bat tattoos, and him screaming "this is music" while holding an iron maiden casette who's band mascott is an undead creature named eddie. They talk about Kas during the D&D campaign, the campaign already being foreshadowing for the future, meaning maybe the Kas reference is too. They even talk about vampires briefly at skull rock. Additionally, his death wasn't neatly wrapped in a bow if you really look at it- the show is too well done to be lazily written and the 'one season then killed off' character is a stale trope now. He got no real closure or redemption and while he died a hero his efforts didnt really help and he's still seen as a horrific killer by the whole town- its too unsatisfying an ending to have him fully written off. I will genuinely be so upset if they dont utilize the opportunity to have another key D&D character represented within the show and have Eddie back for an actually satisfying plot instead of using him as an easy character to kill off just because hes new. Lastly, the amount of press interviews with Jamie Campbell Bower and Joseph Quinn as a duo is insane considering they had no screen time together- it might just be because they're both new yet its never Joseph paired with the actor of Argyle so why is it just him and Jamie? I feel like it could be a way to generate chemistry with them before pairing them up on screen in seaosn 5
I just want to know what the kids did with his body. As far as the public is concerned he's missing. But no WAY would Dustin just leave him there in the upside down. So what did they do? For some reason I just don't see them bringing his body back and burying it in the woods. So does that mean he's still alive somehow? Or an undead, like your theory? Also, here's my Max theory, just for funzies. They can't leave her in a coma the whole season without knowing what's going on for her, because that's a waste of Sadie's talent, but she can't wake up until Vecna dies and they won't kill him until the end. So I think her mind is in Vecna's (remember him pointing to his head and saying they're all in there?) and she's going to explore and find all the other kids in there from the lab, and they're going to team up and fight him from the inside while El and Co are fighting from the outside. And the other kids will be mentally freed to go to whatever afterlife exists in this show when he dies while Max comes back to her body.
You know, ive always thought this theory was a little meh and never liked it much, but reading that there's this much evidence they HAVE to do that, right? That's just too many coincidences. But I don't want them to just fake out his AND Max's deaths. Unless they go on a fucking killing spree in the final season, it just feels fake and like too much plot armor to the point its super frustrating. IMO they should've either let max stay dead (but like- I like what they did IF they genuinely have something good set up for it) or just have actually killed a MAIN character, like Steve or Nancy or something :/
When Jason kept rambling about Chrissy going to him for help instead of Eddie is what really set me off. I know that we mainly saw Chrissy’s mom in her visions but I wouldn’t be surprised if Jason was a part of the problem too. I mean the dude is such a narcissist and thinks he’s everything. All because he’s the all star player and has the popular cheerleader girlfriend.
Really? Jason seemed like a genuine person. I never picked up on those things except for that Chrissy couldn't go to him about her problems. Maybe she felt he wouldn't care or something, but I never thought he was narcissistic.
No, Jason became unhinged from his trauma of losing Chrissy, I really think he loved her and she loved him just fine. Notoriously, Jason never was rude or mean to anyone prior this, even when he called Eddie a freak was because Eddie directly and publicly attacked the basketball team. Eddie was prejudiced, too as we saw when he spoke to Steve. He was nice to Lucas and he clearly loved both Chrissy and Patrick. And listen, I am not defending him on his later actions, he surely was narcissistic and totally had a main character syndrome. He thought he was the hero and convinced himself of his own lies and I hated him 90% of the season. But I am not going to blame him for Chrissy's trauma that was clearly on her family alone. I think she didn't go to him not because he was abusive or bad to her, but because of the shame and guilt she felt for her problems, just as Max did with Lucas. What came after that, just showed that there is a fundamental difference between the type of person Jason and Lucas where and the difference between their situations (Chrissy died, Max didn't at first. Lucas was aware or at least had a gist of what was happening, Jason was in the dark).
tbh i feel like he's the opposite version of how lucas responded to max. max didn't go to lucas about billy and he was even there and understands what happened so reasonably she has nothing to hide. if max didn't feel comfortable opening up, it's not surprising that chrissy wouldn't go to jason. i actually think jason's character had a lot of depth and i empathized with him to a certain degree, even though i definitely think he deserved bad karma.

Like that sense of feeling helpless when someone you know is suffering, like "Before You Go", an "I should've known." He was in total denial cause he wanted to think they were a perfect couple where he was her protector, so someone telling him he couldn't protect her hurt his ego. Putting that aside, he sucks and he was so damn ANNOYING. I can understand "GRIEF" but he took it to incredible lengths, thinking he could "clear Chrissy's name so she didn't look like a drug addict or saving Max". YOU'RE NOT A HERO, LEAVE MY SCREEN.

I’ve been mourning Max all of July. She grew on me as a character because I too lived in an unstable and abusive environment as a child. She had to grow up really fast in order to bear it and in turn grew apart with those around her. Kids at that age shouldn’t go through that and because they didn’t they have a hard time understanding someone who is. It was like looking at my own experiences minus the sci-fi aspect. I was afraid that Vecna would give Max a glimpse of happiness only to pull her back in episode 4. When the trailer came out for volume 2, most people swore that those scenes were from episode 4 and not from the upcoming volume. I had hope that she’d make it out of this and was heartbroken to see my greatest fear realized on screen. The scene with Lucas yelling for Erica’s help always breaks me and now lives in my mind. ST was robbed at the Emmys. I was looking forward to your take on this and it was worth the wait. Now we sit and wait for the Duffer Brothers to break our spirit again, one last time.
I don’t think I’ve cried as much as I did for a show than I did in episode 9. after I finished the episode the first thing I thought of was “I gotta see Ash react to this” shaking and crying rn

From the moment Eddie says "this one's for you Chrissy" I was literally sobbing. They deserved sm better, but Eddie was a perfect character, and now he can't be ruined. He just was an amazing person

"Think it's my year Henderson" "It is so get your ass up." I died laughing and yes out of all the 1 season curses Eddie's is probably the most tragic I can't even tell you how many reactions I've watched of this episode and people start crying as they realize he's been hurt and dying and then just start sobbing as soon as he asks Dustin if he didn't run away this time. I love Eddie and I was sobbing as soon as he cut the rope cause I knew he was dead already. Steve has been my hands down untouched favorite of this show since season 2 but Eddie manage to steal King Steve's crown in the first episode when he meets Chrissy in the woods and does everything he can to make her feel safe and comfortable and then to try and cheer her up. Lol Ash said that Lucas would never but neither would Eddie or Steve. I won't count Jonathan because uh it's been a while now but you did take pics of Nancy without her consent as she was half naked my guy soooo...you don't get to be in the my guy would never club.

Depression kills. It's a disease for a reason. People struggle with it and sometimes get to a place where they feel like they can have some control over it... But its not a cure. People relapse. Episode 4 gave us a super great message about opening up about your struggles and letting your friends help .. episode 9 gave us a reality check that yeah sometimes even when everything seems like it's getting better ... Depression might still be lurking
The Duffer Brothers are TRULY great writers and have proven themselves as such this season. We need more care in television and movies like this because we all felt so much for the entire season. Everything from the music to the script to the locations to the cinematography - it all worked sooo well! Can't wait for Season 5!
I accidentally got spoiled on season 4 with Eddie’s death so I knew what was gonna happen. But I didn’t expect myself to like his character so much! I was in denial and then it hit me when Dustin was talking to the uncle and gave him Eddie’s necklace😭😭😭
we really need lucas and WILL ESPECIALLY to get their due justice in season 5. i think it would benefit the show greatly to end it focusing on Will for a change, because we started with him. and lucas and the people of color in this show in general need some due justice i feel like they always do… stuff. but a lot of it is based IN racist shit, and i get it because it’s the 80s/90s and what not but it would just be really nice to have lucas given a spotlight for something that is more… satisfying than that. those are my two main hopes for season 5. oh and also to make max’s moment in episode 4 of THIS season mean something by having her being in that coma be a CENTRAL part of the story. i want it to mean something. and i hope she doesn’t actually die.
dustin is somehow still the best character in this show, idk how they keep slowly evolving his character but it’s lovely. i would also love to see dustin and suzie be paired up together IN PERSON that would be LOVELY for season 5 i love them as a couple and mike and will meeting suzie was one of my favorite parts of season 4. it’s the more human stuff we wanna see DUFFER BROTHERSSSS
the problem is that the way they wrote Lucas is bland af and now people aren't really invested in him, like you could erase his entire character from the series and it would change nothing about the story

I think the fact that everyone HATES Jason, is a good thing. Creating a character that hateful is kinda masterful. It's rarely done. The only other character I can think of is Joffrey. Also, episode 4 was all about false hope AKA welcome to reality BABYYYYY!
Despite how many tears I shed during the finale, anger soon followed. Like vol. 1 was SO fucking strong, but there are just too many blunders in vol. 2. I'm so beyond upset. - Will being the force that strengthen the Mileven relationship - ugh, I hate it, I hate it. His face when Mike says his life began when he found El (ya know, right after Will went missing) is so broken, like that's so fucking evil. Can he be his own character and not just El's boyfriend? (And stop fucking over Jonathan, I'd die for that man.) - Eddie dying after spending all of the season being hunted and hated, and even in his death, the town holds a grudge. I know they wanted the whole "finally standing up and fighting", but I am sooo over traumatized characters dying because they finally chose to not be a coward. It is okay to run away from things that can kill you, Duffer brothers! Even more so, why the hell didn't we get to see the others reaction to his death? How did Steve react? Robin? Mike? Why aren't they affected by it? Duffers... You fucked yourself & wasted a BRILLIANT character and actor. Joseph Quinn/Eddie Munson deserved so much better. - And well, you said it all in regard to Max. Why make her go through this amazing arc in epi. 4, only to kill her for shock value, but then backing right out of it? What now, then? You gonna waste Sadie's acting chops by leaving her in the hospital? On that note - the music is still fucking BANGER, especially the remix of Kate Bush & the theme. And I am very grateful that Steve made it out alive.

Totally agree with the Mike thing, seeing him from season 1 being the ‘leader’ and bane of the group to following behind El like a dog just makes me mad, like where did his personality go? He even said it himself his whole life is basically revolves around her now. I kinda disagree about the Eddie thing though, I would have liked to see him live but at the end of the day, even without evidence he’d probably be in jail right after. He wouldn’t be able to spend his life in hiding, and just how they locked that man up for thinking he was unwell when in reality he was telling the truth, after what Jason said and no proper evidence, they’ll most likely blame Eddie. I agree with the Sadie one too, maybe it has something to do with Lucas’s character for next season? But at the same time I could see the twist, I was really expecting her to be saved again 😶🌫️ And Lucas/Max is a good way to do a relationship. Same for Nancy and Johnathan, they still have their own personalities and things that make them special, and their relationship isn’t the ‘main’ thing about the characters. Maybe they did that with Mike to show he’s just a regular teenager in love, and being his first relationship he just doesn’t know how to handle his emotions right to a point where he’s like that? 🤔
The ending leaves me so frustrated bc the only ones grieving Eddie is his uncle and Dustin. That just doesn’t fit bc so many other characters had formed a bond with him.
People don’t give Millie enough credit tbh. Her acting EVERY season is just… SO INCREDIBLE! She constantly raises the bar and shows such an incredibly wide range of emotions and always conveys so much even with a small of amount of lines/Eleven’s limited vocab. She should’ve been nominated for the Emmys! I love Sadie as well and she did incredible this season however I feel like people have tunnel vision and are only focusing on episode 4 and not looking at everyone’s performance throughout the whole season

everything under the sun has been said about everything else in these episodes but i would just like to mention: The Papa arc is honestly one of the best depictions of abuse I've ever seen in media. SO OFTEN it's shown in a black-and-white framing, but that's not what abusive relationships are usually like. Abusive relationships are complicated and messy, and often fueled by a genuine love and affection. Sometimes the abuser has good intentions or is acting out of what they consider love - to them it's not abuse, it's the only way they know how to show it. And one of the things this season does most effectively is conveying that no, Brenner isn't some cartoonish villain - he's just a dude who made some truly immense mistakes, and the only way he knows how to fix them is by doing everything he did before but better (except, you know, not). In his mind, the people in his life will absolve and forgive him when he turns out to be right, and so nothing matters more than reaching that point. (Obviously, there are occasionally black-and-white evil assholes with no redeeming qualities, I know, but my point stands.) This is one of the few times I truly felt like I had seen a depiction of a parental relationship I recognize and deeply identify with in a piece of media, and it hit me so much harder than these kinds of stories usually do. And truly, props to the Duffers for pulling that off because holy shit, up to season 4 Brenner was the closest thing the show had to an outright villain. But he is so much more compelling now as just a deeply, DEEPLY flawed person, and is honestly one of the most realistic characters in the entire show as a result.
The fact that Ash wasn’t in complete shambles after Max’s death blew my mind. She’s stronger than me, because I had to pause the ep and was absolutely sobbing.
I just wanna say that whenever I feel helplessly depressed and bitter I watch your videos and I feel somehow loved afterwards. Like a sister I never had just came to visit me, chatted with me and hugged me. It doesnt matter what the video is about , when its done I feel so warm and somehow understood. i know everyone in the comments is like lightly "making fun" (not actually making fun but you know) of the part you say you feel like the only one safe is max but the thing is, you were totally right with your reasonings and i'll die on this hill. and i know some people wanted her to DIE die bc they wanted a "main character death" "high stakes" blah blah blah but i don't think killing her off would've sent a good message AT ALL considering she's a kid who's been dealing with s*icidal ideation (+ like you said, vecna especially in vol 1 literally represented max's ptsd, survivor's guilt and depression) and was just starting to get better at the end of episode 4 and realize there are people who care about her and that she has things to live for. episode 4 ended with such a powerful message. killing her off would send the message that no matter what, no matter how hard you fight, you could never overcome your depression. and that's just a horrible message..
This season of Stranger Things is, without question, the best season of the show to date. This season has no business being as damn good as it is. Holy hell, what a season of television. I can tell you this right now, we are NOT ready for the final season. At all. The Duffer Brothers better stick the landing in Season 5, I swear to God.

After watching Max's "death" I was very confused because of the symbolism and writing for episode 4's ending as well. But then I kind of realized something related to the metaphor for depression and suicidality:
That moment in episode 4 was a metaphor for an attempt at suicide, or at the very least getting to the point of almost attempting one. Max was able to overcome her suicidal ideation by remembering the good times that kept her going and those who love her. She was able to overcome her darkest moment, at least for now. With depression in real life, those we love can help us stay here a little longer, they can help us feel like the storm has passed. But if left untreated, depression will win.
In episode 8, Max was willing and open to going back to face Vecna, by allowing him to enter her mind again. This can be seen as a metaphor for letting our guard down when depression starts seeping back into us. During the confrontation, Max attempts to use similar tactics to evade Vecna (aka depression) by hiding within her good memories (the winter dance). But Vecna found his way into those memories as well and slowly sucked the life out of it (the dying flowers and such). Eventually and unfortunately, depression/Vecna takes over her mind.
And another part that is true to life is when Max says she isn't ready to die. That could be seen as her regretting her "attempted suicide", which is a VERY common attitude among those who survive suicide attempts.
I might be giving the Duffer brothers too much credit with this, but after episode 4 I think they know what they are doing when it comes to writing depression as a metaphor.

When Max said she wasn’t ready to die, I absolutely broke. How a person can be so depressed and care less about what could happen to them but finally realizing life is so worth it despite the hardships… I’ve never cried harder at a show.
Same here. I think being depressed and suicidal isn't really wanting to die, its wanting things to change and for the vicious cycle to end. At least that's been my personal experience with it.

@@danivaav THIS THIS THIS!!! I've almost always been suicidal, to the point where I literally can't remember a time where I wasn't. Every single time I've attempted suicide (5 times so far), I'd almost always regret it around halfway through. I didn't truly want to die, I just wanted my suffering to end, and for the vicious cycle to stop. It was almost always around the 35-45 minute mark after taking the pills that I realized I didn't truly want to die. I was just so fucking sick of the same shit happening over and over again. I just wanted my pain to stop. I related to Max so damn much this season and I'm super glad they decided to keep that part of the plot. It made Max's storyline so much more impactful. I think Max's storyline this season was so incredible it was the best storyline and season yet!!
The actor who plays Lucas absolutely killed the acting during that last episode. You could really feel the pain and loss in his voice. I legit cried for a good 3 minutes first time watching this and still tear up a bit every time I watch it

A THEORY:
Running Up That Hill is part of an album called Hounds Of Love by Kate Bush which is literally a conceptual album that tells a story about a girl who falls into a coma and then wakes up. in a song called “Waking The Witch” is where you can hear people trying to wake the girl up (friends & a lover) just like her friends & Lucas and you can hear a demonic voice threatening her that could represent Vecna with Clock sounds in the background. Eddie was based on Damien Echols so his character arc was always gonna be tragic. Damien was a part of the West Memphis Three, who got caught up in the Satanic Panic and were wrongly accused of and charged with the murders of three young boys. They all went to jail, but Damien was specifically sentenced to death. They all were in jail for 20 years fighting on appeals, Damien on Death row, and new evidence came out proving they were innocent, but the state didn’t want to take accountability so the three each did Alford pleas, meaning they plead guilty while also maintaining their innocence. Eddie’s only options were death or being wrongfully accused of the deaths in Hawkins and sentenced to jail or death.

But when Dustin and crew came for him, he realized there are decent people worth protecting in Hawkins. And that there was way more at stake than just Hawkins if Vecna won. He showed in the end he’s better than what those people think he is, and better than them in general

i had the exact same issue with Eddie i was genuinely convinced that he would break the one season curse, so I was really really upset. watching it back now max's death makes me cry a lot more as a lot of the shock with eddie dying has worn off and now it's just about which death is actually sadder overall. but i think the anger that Ash felt is what i've also seen a lot of other people feel and it's definitely comparable. at the end of the day none of us get why he had to die and you can tell the duffers regret it lmao

Award shows have been known to not give horror much attention. It’s been a thing. And it’s unfortunate because there’s so many great writers, producers, directors, actors etc involved in making great horror/thriller films.

And I seriously doubt as a preteen he fully understood what he was feeling. Robin was an adult who it seems has come to terms with her sexuality. Plus She felt she could trust Steve after what they went through season 3 and after he opened up about his feelings towards her. Not to mention they could’ve still been under the influence of the drug they were given. Idk I believe Will was gonna come out to Mike at some point during his trip. He took the painting to the airport. Then they have that awkward interaction where Mike goes for the handshake and Will goes in for the hug. Then after everything following that it’s no wonder will changes his mind and doesn’t say anything. Honestly I’m glad with how they handled Will this season. Not everyone needs a grand coming out ceremony and that unspoken understanding that Will has with Jonathan isn’t that uncommon. With everything that went down the last few episodes I’m glad they didn’t also try to squeeze in a coming out scene. It would’ve felt extremely forced since Wills character was already a bit sidelined this season.

Max "death" was horrible to me. She didn't go like a hero like Eddie, she was a victim. She went trought so much: depression, she lost her brother. And in the end she didn't even accepted her death. She wanted to live and was begging for it. Now my favorite character it's either gone, or is going to be stuck in a bed for the entire next season.... This show sucks indeed

His girlfriend died last seen with a drug dealer who likes likes ‘demonic’ stuff, of course it would be a lot for him. Then his friend died in front of him and from all that grief he started to make shit up about Eddie. After that he sees one of Eddie’s friends (Lucas) in a house were a crime scene was taken place in (and the house is claimed to be haunted by a demon) Jason sees max who looks like she’s possessed, and tries to wake her up, afraid she will end up like his girlfriend.
But I’m not justifying the fact that he didn’t give Lucas a chance to explain, talks from dead people’s perspective when he doesn’t know anything about them, and trying to look like a hero but ending up being mean.
People are justifying his actions since people hate him but not Billy, who was a bully, racist and tried to murder CHILDREN for no reason.
(Btw I’m explaining Jason’s POV of the situation. And people have opinions which is why some think Jason is a good guy)

I feel for Eleven. She's 14/15 years old and the fate of everything is on her shoulders all because 1 can't let anything go. And this is the first time in her life she's truly failed at anything. But also what disgusted me this season was Papa and Henry blaming the traumatized child for everything when it was their actions that set everything into motion. Papa couldn't let go of him and kept him around children who were clearly inferior, and Henry, well he's just a psychopath.

He was a psychopath well before Brenner. He was so fixated on essentially eradicating humanity because he felt everyone was a hypocrite. But as far as we know, his sister Alice was a sweet little girl who hadn’t done anything wrong.
And then Henry later groomed Eleven, believing her to be just like him. He murdered a bunch of children who had done nothing to him. And the thing is, he could’ve killed Brenner but didn’t. And he spent all those years in the upside down blaming 11 for what happened and seeking revenge on her which is why he created his monster in season 3 to take her out. Like what do you mean he can’t let anything go? He’s been holding a grudge against a child for years. His anger is well beyond Papa. You could’ve had a case had he gone after Brenner, but that’s not what Henry did. He attacked people (specifically more children) based on their worst perceived wrongs and fears, whilst viewing himself as superior to them all.

Eddie's death felt so pointless to me, he had a whole sacrificial moment that didn't really help. The goal was to distract the bats a little longer but he didn't need to do that and also died immediately so he didn't buy any time. His reasoning of not running anymore was so weird too, running would buy more time and he was already facing the battle by going to the upsidedown in the first place. It was so unnecessary.
I was sad that we didn't really get to see people reacting to his death, like Steve or Mike. I also cried at the scene were Dustin talks to Eddie's uncle, that was so sad
@Peppa Pig maybe, but Eddie didn't know that. As far as he was concerned everything was going according to plan and vecna was dying at that very moment. They didn't really express that the bats were an immediate danger for the Nancy crew either.

I just lost my brother in law to suicide 3 days ago so watching the ending of this video really got to me. He was in our lives almost 20 years and lived with us practically the whole time. He left one son, and his wife (my sister). It was really hard to watch this one, but it does take my mind off things even just for a little while. And the "Big Boy" was improvised. I love when that happens. Directors and writers letting in collaborative creativity with the actors and allowing some improvising is great for any show. At least that's my belief.
i genuinely believe eddie can be brought back in season 5- the single season character is such lazy writing at this point, but a key D&D character that helps take down Vecna is Vecna's undead right hand man, Kas the Bloodyhanded. Kas is a vampire that is Vecna's puppet before betraying him and being pivotal in his downfall in the game. If they truly want to miror the characters of dungeons and dragons Eddie fits perfectly as Kas. The theme of being a puppet with playing Master of Puppets along with his tattoo of the creature being conrtolled by a hand with strings is big for Eddie's character, potentially a hint that he may be used as Vecna's right hand man. Kas is an undead vampire, with the symbolism of eddie being killed by bats, his bat tattoos, and him screaming "this is music" while holding an iron maiden casette who's band mascott is an undead creature named eddie. They talk about Kas during the D&D campaign, the campaign already being foreshadowing for the future, meaning maybe the Kas reference is too. They even talk about vampires briefly at skull rock. Additionally, his death wasn't neatly wrapped in a bow if you really look at it- the show is too well done to be lazily written and the 'one season then killed off' character is a stale trope now. He got no real closure or redemption and while he died a hero his efforts didnt really help and he's still seen as a horrific killer by the whole town- its too unsatisfying an ending to have him fully written off. I will genuinely be so upset if they dont utilize the opportunity to have another key D&D character represented within the show and have Eddie back for an actually satisfying plot instead of using him as an easy character to kill off just because hes new. Lastly, the amount of press interviews with Jamie Campbell Bower and Joseph Quinn as a duo is insane considering they had no screen time together- it might just be because they're both new yet its never Joseph paired with the actor of Argyle so why is it just him and Jamie? I feel like it could be a way to generate chemistry with them before pairing them up on screen in seaosn 5

I just want to know what the kids did with his body. As far as the public is concerned he's missing. But no WAY would Dustin just leave him there in the upside down. So what did they do? For some reason I just don't see them bringing his body back and burying it in the woods. So does that mean he's still alive somehow? Or an undead, like your theory?
Also, here's my Max theory, just for funzies. They can't leave her in a coma the whole season without knowing what's going on for her, because that's a waste of Sadie's talent, but she can't wake up until Vecna dies and they won't kill him until the end. So I think her mind is in Vecna's (remember him pointing to his head and saying they're all in there?) and she's going to explore and find all the other kids in there from the lab, and they're going to team up and fight him from the inside while El and Co are fighting from the outside. And the other kids will be mentally freed to go to whatever afterlife exists in this show when he dies while Max comes back to her body.
You know, ive always thought this theory was a little meh and never liked it much, but reading that there's this much evidence they HAVE to do that, right? That's just too many coincidences. But I don't want them to just fake out his AND Max's deaths. Unless they go on a fucking killing spree in the final season, it just feels fake and like too much plot armor to the point its super frustrating. IMO they should've either let max stay dead (but like- I like what they did IF they genuinely have something good set up for it) or just have actually killed a MAIN character, like Steve or Nancy or something :/
When Jason kept rambling about Chrissy going to him for help instead of Eddie is what really set me off. I know that we mainly saw Chrissy’s mom in her visions but I wouldn’t be surprised if Jason was a part of the problem too. I mean the dude is such a narcissist and thinks he’s everything. All because he’s the all star player and has the popular cheerleader girlfriend.
Really? Jason seemed like a genuine person. I never picked up on those things except for that Chrissy couldn't go to him about her problems. Maybe she felt he wouldn't care or something, but I never thought he was narcissistic.
No, Jason became unhinged from his trauma of losing Chrissy, I really think he loved her and she loved him just fine. Notoriously, Jason never was rude or mean to anyone prior this, even when he called Eddie a freak was because Eddie directly and publicly attacked the basketball team. Eddie was prejudiced, too as we saw when he spoke to Steve. He was nice to Lucas and he clearly loved both Chrissy and Patrick. And listen, I am not defending him on his later actions, he surely was narcissistic and totally had a main character syndrome. He thought he was the hero and convinced himself of his own lies and I hated him 90% of the season. But I am not going to blame him for Chrissy's trauma that was clearly on her family alone. I think she didn't go to him not because he was abusive or bad to her, but because of the shame and guilt she felt for her problems, just as Max did with Lucas. What came after that, just showed that there is a fundamental difference between the type of person Jason and Lucas where and the difference between their situations (Chrissy died, Max didn't at first. Lucas was aware or at least had a gist of what was happening, Jason was in the dark).
tbh i feel like he's the opposite version of how lucas responded to max. max didn't go to lucas about billy and he was even there and understands what happened so reasonably she has nothing to hide. if max didn't feel comfortable opening up, it's not surprising that chrissy wouldn't go to jason. i actually think jason's character had a lot of depth and i empathized with him to a certain degree, even though i definitely think he deserved bad karma.

Like that sense of feeling helpless when someone you know is suffering, like "Before You Go", an "I should've known." He was in total denial cause he wanted to think they were a perfect couple where he was her protector, so someone telling him he couldn't protect her hurt his ego. Putting that aside, he sucks and he was so damn ANNOYING. I’ve been mourning Max all of July. She grew on me as a character because I too lived in an unstable and abusive environment as a child. She had to grow up really fast in order to bear it and in turn grew apart with those around her. Kids at that age shouldn’t go through that and because they didn’t they have a hard time understanding someone who is. It was like looking at my own experiences minus the sci-fi aspect. I was afraid that Vecna would give Max a glimpse of happiness only to pull her back in episode 4. When the trailer came out for volume 2, most people swore that those scenes were from episode 4 and not from the upcoming volume. I had hope that she’d make it out of this and was heartbroken to see my greatest fear realized on screen. The scene with Lucas yelling for Erica’s help always breaks me and now lives in my mind. ST was robbed at the Emmys.
I was looking forward to your take on this and it was worth the wait. Now we sit and wait for the Duffer Brothers to break our spirit again, one last time.

When max’s limbs broke i was sad. But when she said « im so scared im so scared i dont wanna die » it BROKE ME i would have been fine without this line😭

I died laughing and yes out of all the 1 season curses Eddie's is probably the most tragic I can't even tell you how many reactions I've watched of this episode and people start crying as they realize he's been hurt and dying and then just start sobbing as soon as he asks Dustin if he didn't run away this time. I love Eddie and I was sobbing as soon as he cut the rope cause I knew he was dead already. Steve has been my hands down untouched favorite of this show since season 2 but Eddie manage to steal King Steve's crown in the first episode when he meets Chrissy in the woods and does everything he can to make her feel safe and comfortable and then to try and cheer her up. Lol Ash said that Lucas would never but neither would Eddie or Steve. I won't count Jonathan because uh it's been a while now but you did take pics of Nancy without her consent as she was half naked my guy soooo...you don't get to be in the my guy would never club.

Depression kills. It's a disease for a reason. People struggle with it and sometimes get to a place where they feel like they can have some control over it... But its not a cure. People relapse. Episode 4 gave us a super great message about opening up about your struggles and letting your friends help .. episode 9 gave us a reality check that yeah sometimes even when everything seems like it's getting better ... Depression might still be lurking
The Duffer Brothers are TRULY great writers and have proven themselves as such this season. We need more care in television and movies like this because we all felt so much for the entire season. Everything from the music to the script to the locations to the cinematography - it all worked sooo well! Can't wait for Season 5!
I accidentally got spoiled on season 4 with Eddie’s death so I knew what was gonna happen. But I didn’t expect myself to like his character so much! I was in denial and then it hit me when Dustin was talking to the uncle and gave him Eddie’s necklace😭😭😭
we really need lucas and WILL ESPECIALLY to get their due justice in season 5. i think it would benefit the show greatly to end it focusing on Will for a change, because we started with him. and lucas and the people of color in this show in general need some due justice i feel like they always do… stuff. but a lot of it is based IN racist shit, and i get it because it’s the 80s/90s and what not but it would just be really nice to have lucas given a spotlight for something that is more… satisfying than that. those are my two main hopes for season 5. oh and also to make max’s moment in episode 4 of THIS season mean something by having her being in that coma be a CENTRAL part of the story. i want it to mean something. and i hope she doesn’t actually die.
dustin is somehow still the best character in this show, idk how they keep slowly evolving his character but it’s lovely. i would also love to see dustin and suzie be paired up together IN PERSON that would be LOVELY for season 5 i love them as a couple and mike and will meeting suzie was one of my favorite parts of season 4. it’s the more human stuff we wanna see DUFFER BROTHERSSSS
the problem is that the way they wrote Lucas is bland af and now people aren't really invested in him, like you could erase his entire character from the series and it would change nothing about the story

But goddamn. His face when Mike says his life began when he found El (ya know, right after Will went missing) is so broken, like that's so fucking evil. Yeah yeah the 80s, shut up, we're dealing with supernatural shit here, I don't care about realism like that. Can we get sweet, caring Mike back now? Can he be his own character and not just El's boyfriend?

- Eddie dying after spending all of the season being hunted and hated, and even in his death, the town holds a grudge. I know they wanted the whole "finally standing up and fighting", but I am sooo over traumatized characters dying because they finally chose to not be a coward. It is okay to run away from things that can kill you, Duffer brothers! Even more so, why the hell didn't we get to see the others reaction to his death? How did Steve react? Robin? Mike? Why aren't they affected by it? Duffers... You fucked yourself & wasted a BRILLIANT character and actor. Joseph Quinn/Eddie Munson deserved so much better.
- And well, you said it all in regard to Max. Why make her go through this amazing arc in epi. 4, only to kill her for shock value, but then backing right out of it? What now, then? You gonna waste Sadie's acting chops by leaving her in the hospital?

Totally agree with the Mike thing, seeing him from season 1 being the ‘leader’ and bane of the group to following behind El like a dog just makes me mad, like where did his personality go? He even said it himself his whole life is basically revolves around her now.
I kinda disagree about the Eddie thing though, I would have liked to see him live but at the end of the day, even without evidence he’d probably be in jail right after. He wouldn’t be able to spend his life in hiding, and just how they locked that man up for thinking he was unwell when in reality he was telling the truth, after what Jason said and no proper evidence, they’ll most likely blame Eddie.
I agree with the Sadie one too, maybe it has something to do with Lucas’s character for next season? But at the same time I could see the twist, I was really expecting her to be saved again 😶🌫️
And Lucas/Max is a good way to do a relationship. Same for Nancy and Johnathan, they still have their own personalities and things that make them special, and their relationship isn’t the ‘main’ thing about the characters. Maybe they did that with Mike to show he’s just a regular teenager in love, and being his first relationship he just doesn’t know how to handle his emotions right to a point where he’s like that? 🤔
The ending leaves me so frustrated bc the only ones grieving Eddie is his uncle and Dustin. That just doesn’t fit bc so many other characters had formed a bond with him.
People don’t give Millie enough credit tbh. Her acting EVERY season is just… SO INCREDIBLE! She constantly raises the bar and shows such an incredibly wide range of emotions and always conveys so much even with a small of amount of lines/Eleven’s limited vocab. She should’ve been nominated for the Emmys! I love Sadie as well and she did incredible this season however I feel like people have tunnel vision and are only focusing on episode 4 and not looking at everyone’s performance throughout the whole season

I just said people have tunnel vision and just focus on that one scene 😂 tbh Max without Kate Bush wouldn't have had a fraction of the hype she has now. People keep saying Sadie did the best this season based off of that ONE scene and fail to assess the acting objectively if that makes sense.
That’s because Millie didn’t have the main focus this season. We know how talented she is but some of the other actors finally had amazing moments this season

everything under the sun has been said about everything else in these episodes but i would just like to mention:
The Papa arc is honestly one of the best depictions of abuse I've ever seen in media. SO OFTEN it's shown in a black-and-white framing, but that's not what abusive relationships are usually like. Abusive relationships are complicated and messy, and often fueled by a genuine love and affection. Sometimes the abuser has good intentions or is acting out of what they consider love - to them it's not abuse, it's the only way they know how to show it. And one of the things this season does most effectively is conveying that no, Brenner isn't some cartoonish villain - he's just a dude who made some truly immense mistakes, and the only way he knows how to fix them is by doing everything he did before but better (except, you know, not). In his mind, the people in his life will absolve and forgive him when he turns out to be right, and so nothing matters more than reaching that point. (Obviously, there are occasionally black-and-white evil assholes with no redeeming qualities, I know, but my point stands.) This is one of the few times I truly felt like I had seen a depiction of a parental relationship I recognize and deeply identify with in a piece of media, and it hit me so much harder than these kinds of stories usually do.
And truly, props to the Duffers for pulling that off because holy shit, up to season 4 Brenner was the closest thing the show had to an outright villain. But he is so much more compelling now as just a deeply, DEEPLY flawed person, and is honestly one of the most realistic characters in the entire show as a result.
The fact that Ash wasn’t in complete shambles after Max’s death blew my mind. She’s stronger than me, because I had to pause the ep and was absolutely sobbing.
I just wanna say that whenever I feel helplessly depressed and bitter I watch your videos and I feel somehow loved afterwards. Like a sister I never had just came to visit me, chatted with me and hugged me. It doesnt matter what the video is about , when its done I feel so warm and somehow understood. So I'm very grateful for the content you put out, and just wanna say thank you. Sending hugs 🤗❤

i know everyone in the comments is like lightly "making fun" (not actually making fun but you know) of the part you say you feel like the only one safe is max but the thing is, you were totally right with your reasonings and i'll die on this hill.
and i know some people wanted her to DIE die bc they wanted a "main character death" "high stakes" blah blah blah but i don't think killing her off would've sent a good message AT ALL considering she's a kid who's been dealing with s*icidal ideation (+ like you said, vecna especially in vol 1 literally represented max's ptsd, survivor's guilt and depression) and was just starting to get better at the end of episode 4 and realize there are people who care about her and that she has things to live for.
episode 4 ended with such a powerful message. killing her off would send the message that no matter what, no matter how hard you fight, you could never overcome your depression. and that's just a horrible message..
The way Jason's friend tackled Erica was not okay. Erica knocking him out was glorious ngl

This season has no business being as damn good as it is. Holy hell, what a season of television.
I can tell you this right now, we are NOT ready for the final season. At all.
