  • Live reaction of me being disappointed.
This is not a video of yet another white person trying to explain why this is bad. This is a video about how we absorb art. How we can embrace artists that feed into the kind of world we want in the future. How what we take in and who we listen to effects us. But it's mostly about how I wont be doing a Pantera Deep Dive, sorry fellas.

I know this video is like 8 years old. I am new to Pantera and had NO IDEA. If you think this is purely an alcohol problem, you are being foolish. I also know some people are trying to twist this into him having said something else. Also foolish.
ALSO before anyone tries to roast me, my mechanism when I feel uncomfortable is to laugh. It is how I self sooth. The beginning of this video is a PERFECT example of that.
3/4 of this video is unedited it's my raw thoughts. I didn't know what would be happening when I pressed record. Like all my videos, nothing is planned. This is just me saying things. Like always. You think the things you want to think and I will think the things I want to think.
If you want to dive deeper into how we combat racism in the metal scene this video is cool: ruclips.net/video/HlQ-KxS5xUs/видео.htmlsi=tk_mbpK7hTv1YDfF

*sigh*, it's a shame Eric Clapton's racist bullshit wasn't caught on record. Anyway, I'm going to keep the rest of my opinion positive, and say I appreciate how you handled this, Charis. Take care!

As a fan from the early 90’s Phil has always said and done things that make me question my fandom. It’s not ok. But, I just think Phil is a more complicated case than just some dumb racist neanderthal. There is real depth in his lyrics. He has had every opportunity the last 7 years to seek validation for what ever far right political beliefs he might have. If ever there was a time for racist Phil to come out of the closet the modern era is it. He hasn’t though. Maybe I’m being blind because I recognize just how important Pantera was to our genre. I also trust the judgment of Zakk and Charlie. They are both really solid dudes. And Charlie is engaged to a black woman.

Yeah I definitely didn’t know that side of him. I’ll still listen to Pantera because I love the music but yeah that sucks.
Update: I looked into it a bit more and apparently he said that it was a sarcastic reaction because people in the audience were calling him a nazi during the show and he did that to piss them off. That could be true, Ronnie Radke does the same kind of shit when people yell at him for stuff. Honestly whatever the case it was stupid to do that. If that truly was a sarcastic reaction, he should’ve chosen a different approach

I think that if it was truly a sarcastic reaction he would have said that rather than trying to blame white wine.
But yeah Ronnie says all kinds of crazy sh*t I have even heard live lol

Great exposition on the moral quandary of art and the artists as people
Obviously listening to older rock , metal you run into huge sexist problems but difference between ignorant sexism and an artist whose a rapist or child predator
Anyway Ty for taking in a difficult topic
As a patter cleanser from white power would be to react to Ice T metal band Bodycount and its messages against white police brutality

I wholeheartedly second the suggestion of Body Count. Really anything by Ice-T. As an old school rocker, punk, metalhead I shied away from hip hop, rap, and gangster rap for most of my life. In the last few years through my mid 50's I've gone back and discovered what I would have liked had I been open minded enough to listen to it back in the day.

Completely agree with your take on this Charis. Outside of a few songs I've never really dove into their catalog even though Vulgar Display of Power came out when I was in HS. This was the first time I'd even heard or seen this; they won't be getting another penny of my money. There's no place in the world for beliefs and actions like this and quite frankly is the mindset of an ignorant child by Anselmo.
Thank you for bringing this to light for those who didn't know.

THANK YOU! While I love the song Cemetery Gates I won't listen to it, and haven't for a long time because of who Phil Anselmo is as a person, what he believes, and what he says. It has also made me view those musicians who are taking part in the new Pantera tour because I KNOW they know who Phil is, and are choosing to go on your with him.
I'm very glad that you went back, looked up this clip, and made up your own mind about it. This is far from the only time that he has expressed those ideas, but it was caught on camera which is out there for all to see.
Thank you for choosing to not support Phil and Pantera by reacting to anything else by them. You may lose viewers, but taking the moral high ground is never a wrong decision. After all we all have to look ourselves in the mirror, and our choices are reflected back at us. I would have been utterly shocked, and greatly saddened if you had made any other decision, but I felt confident enough after watching your videos for long enough to believe that you would make the choice you did.
Apologies if that is rambly, and stuff. I haven't been able to get my adhd meds in a couple of months so my brain is more broken than it usually is. 😜
All the best as always! ❤

Phil has always been...an interesting case, in my mind. He has done some VERY stupid shit, but simultaneously has had lyrics speaking out about racism in Pantera...which REALLY confuses me! Like, I'm pretty sure he was the sole lyric-writer for Pantera, so I really don't know where the racism and shit later on came from. Was it just the alcohol? Was it the alcohol _combined_ with being around potentially racist people in the 80s making him think of dumb phrases to say...? Or is he LITERALLY just racist? I can't really willingly support modern Pantera in any case thanks to it, but Phil is a very very confusing man to me :P

If it was a one time thing, I would be okay with it but sadly, it's not the case. And it's not just his views but the people who also havve those views and now go to Pantera concerts. (There were a lot of incidents during the Pantera set in Resurrection Fest last summer)

Yeah i also did not know about this, I don't follow bands beyond the couple of songs I listen of theirs. I only started to really get into metal a couple of years ago so this would have not been on my radar at all.

I will be kind and say that hopefully Phil gets help for his addiction issues. His talent in no way out does the harm his addiction has caused. My dad was an alcoholic. He was good when he could be. He just often couldn't. I'll leave it at that. Peace!

To be honest, the problem is Phil. Dime Bag and Vinny weren't down with it, and in fact quit Pantera (probably for other reasons too. Phil is known to be a tool). And they aren't with us anymore. So I'm not going to ignore their legacy . Also not doing anything for Phil. What bothers me is he got away with it, in fact toured with Metallica last year as Pantera. And Metallica was down with it, and Zakk Wilde was ok for working for him. (James has had his own incidents, but that's another subject.) I continue to respect Pantera without respecting Phil's views or supporting him . Yeah the whole thing is sorta a roach motel

Funnny thing is i met him personaly and Phil is not that horrible person which the media want to make him out to be, Phil today is a completely different person as he was 10 or 20 years ago, he has cut down on heavy alcohol consumption and stopped using drugs altogether. On top of that, he has repeatedly explained that he is not a racist but these days you can't joke about these things because people have become a bunch of sensitive children.

@@silientbruhman899 what do you think about the video where he talks about how people can’t have “white pride” and they are being indoctrinated with rap music?
Some of the nicest people I have ever met are racist/ sexist/ homophobic. People can be a lot of things all at once.

I grew up loving Ted Nugent, and especially the song Stranglehold, but as you pointed out not only is Ted unrepentant, the stuff he continues to say and do have caused me to completely stop listening to anything he has done. And according to Ted, he doesn't even have the "excuse" that "drugs and alcohol" made him do it.

Has anyone walked a mile in Phil‘s shoes?
I believe the answer to the question is no and until someone can prove that they have, read the next sentence.
Let him who is without sin cast the first stone.
    For instance, look at Charis.
She’s clearly talented and if she was doing what she truly wants to do in her life, in her heart, she wouldn’t even have a RUclips channel.
But, we don’t know why she isn’t currently doing what she really wants to do because, we have not walked a mile in her shoes.

    • @CharisSellick
      @CharisSellick  4 месяца назад +2

That’s so funny because I literally am doing exactly what’s in my heart to do with my life RIGHT NOW, but also making RUclips videos. I also have been through many things a lot of people wouldn’t even imagine. What people have been through doesn’t excuse them from being hateful to others. These statements he made are hateful. Not one stone cast. But I hold all humans to a standards. As should you.
Your biblical reference is about literally unaliving someone. None of that is happening here. There are consequences for everyone’s actions either good or bad. Everyone has to face the music even if they make a mistake. But this doesn’t seem like a mistake to me. This seems like who he is. I will be who I am and say what I think.
I am also a size 6 so it would be challenging for anyone to wear my shoes. 🤷‍♀️
