My goodness Mark, what a flying career! You have flown all the Boeing planes from small to large. Not many pilots can say that. Now you only have a few hundred large boats to navigate and captain! What a nice thing to have all your friends come to keep you company. The N51 handled the large seas very well. What a great boat. They are talking 65 knot winds and 10 meter seas for the Vendee tomorrow in the southern Indian Ocean, Can’t wait see what that video is like single handed in those small boats. Hope all the sailors remain safe and boats not sunk. God speed to them. Best to you all.
excellent video Mark I'm finally caught up on episodes, awesome hearing about your inspiring career/life , look forward to your videos in my patch (western isles scotland) all the best on your adventure of a lifetime.
Another fabulous episode Mark, thank you for sharing your history, it goes to show that persistence pays off, well done you. AwanuiNZ handled those rougher conditions with ease, great boat, fair winds.😊
We live in British Columbia, Canada. We really enjoy your your postings and travel episodes. We cruised the BC coast in a 28 30 34. We are retired now. But are looking to get 58 or 65 Fleming. The water can get pretty wild. We have been in 15-meter swells as well. Love your videos. Will continue to watch.
Yes, totally agree with you, people are wonderful. Being 🇨🇦, I got to visit both Australia and New Zealand. I just love you guys, I have never been disappointed by either, just wonderful people indeed. Now you know why I love your channel, yes, good editing, music and knowledge sharing. Thank you for sharing your adventures with us all, you and Fiona are a wonderful persons also, wishing all the best and save travels . 🙂👍🇨🇦
It's great that you have shared with us the details of your life. We emigrated to NZ in 1960, from Solihull, not far from your dad's hometown of Birmingham. We sailed on the Southern Cross into Auckland. We then journeyed to New Plymouth, where I attended NP boys high school for my last two years of education. NZ schools were tough in those days. Our first two weeks were spent doing army cadet training. Caning across the backside was the favoured punishment doled out to us little cherubs. Teachers would be jailed for such acts these days. I returned to the UK, aged seventeen, once again aboard the Southern Cross. Happy sailing.
What a gorgeous set of engines, Mark, I do like a clean, well organised boat, especially the engine room. The heart of any motor boat. 5m seas that surfing stuff, Great video, ur presentation an narration, its so easy to watch and listen to, thanks for sharing 🇳🇿🤙💯🇦🇺love ur white vest Mark very stylish
Hey Mark looks like you’re having an awesome time. Love the story about your flying career, really enjoyed it. I’ve done a little bit of flying myself on single engines planes and on R22 helicopters. Looks like you’re getting a bit of a fishing kit now can’t wait to see you pull in another monster. Looking forward to the next show, cheers.
Yeah, did go for dinner in St.Tropez twenty years ago in high season and remember it hit my budget big time. Good job for taking Vince onboard heading towards North-western Europe. 👍
Awesome video Mark. Nice to put some personal history in the mix. Gives some context to everything that goes on. All the best for the next phase of the adventure in learning how to do nothing.
Really interesting hearing your story👍 My boy worked as cabin crew on the 787s for ANZ when they first started using them. His name was William Lawless. Don’t know if you’d have crossed paths but you never know.
Great video and superb idea to film from the dinghy, gives it a new dimension. Also nice to have some company onboard, does increase safety and you won't need to stare at the plotters all the time. That passage to Menorca indeed looked very rough, guess that was the storm that was hitting Valencia, Taragona and Barcelona, must have been very uncomfortable. But this is the weather that Nordhavn is made to handle and she performed flawless. And that is a very comforting feeling. As for the dinghy you may want to think about buying a couple of 2500 kg straps (the wide ones) and then simply screw them onto the sides of the blocks on which the dinghy is resting. Once the dinghy is on you just put the straps over the dinghy and tie it down. We have the same set up and it works fine, even in high winds. Guess by now you will have made it further South, hope the weather was better.
Yip to everything and now approaching Malaga then on to Gibraltar. Currently have the crane across the dingy….trying to see if there is a downside…none so far
Just loved this episode. Your personal story is so interesting, and appreciate you sharing with us. So glad you have some friends along this time especially through the rough seas. Loved all the ports of call……and those pastries ❤ stay safe till next time….PS love the Trump hat!!
Wonderful life story Mark, but it's amazing how the harder you guys worked the luckier you get, great team Fiona and yourself. And yes slowing down is hard for some of us 😂
I remember coming into the English channel when we did the nz to uk and back trip '67-'68. . The bow was driving into and under the waves . Each wave as it moved back lifted the props out causing the whole boat to shudder. . Wahoo . . Fun for a 7 year old . . 👍👋NZ🇳🇿🍻twa
Another top watch Mark. I heard you mention being lucky? Mate If anybody made their so called Luck it is you and Fiona. You seemed to be a very focused and driven individual. Keep up the videos dude!
Loving the journey, we’ll start something similar (more northernly) next year. If you have time, which video showed your planned route (at the time) back to NZ? I cannot find it for the life of me.
Awe crap that is a good question…about to set off for Gibraltar then, Portugal, Northern Spain, France (2025) England, Belgium canals to Holland, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, (2026) Scotland, Iceland, Greenland, New Foundland, ICW, (2027) Panama, then mighty Pacific either direct across or up West Coast of US to PNW, Alaska and maybe across Pacific there and home through Asia 2028 - just getting up the Coast of Portugal is my current focus!
Enjoyed hearing a little about your history. Hanging that courtesy flag looks a little dangerous in good weather. There has got to be a better way of doing it but I’m sure you are already on that in your mind anyway.😊
What a life, and as the saying goes, plenty life left in the sea dog yet. Some seas, wait until you reach the North Sea up beside me at Arbroath ooft cheers 🥃🏴
My thoughts on the Bimini supports, agree it is desirable, I liked the orientation of the 2 strops you had, nothing in your central line of sight, the angles of the two (dividing load and effort) complimented the outboard supports. Just 2 cents of couch professional suggestions. Cheers T
Joined in 1980 as an instructor then moved two years later to flying the Baron, Cheiftan single pilot. Then co on the bandit including those and finally a command on the bandit one year before I joined airnz
Handled those big seas with aplomb. That must give you some confidence about ocean passages. Maybe get yourself a couple weight belts for when you need to freedive to the anchor or under the boat. I reckon 2 weights on a belt will be all you need to achieve neutral buoyancy so you aren't fighting to stay down. More if you wear a wetsuit.
Great video, enjoyed every minute. You and Awanui NZ powered through some major seas, I bet the stabilizers were working hard to keep the boat relatively stable. You never answered -- were you able to watch the football match you hoped to see in the cafe? Glad you had capable friends to help out with that long passage. Did anyone try to cook when you were in heavy seas?
Well Mark! Another great video.! What a great passage to Menorca. Good you had a few people to relieve you on the watch. And a good passage to get a feel of the capabilities of Awanui NZ. Not the last time you will see big swells.... Just out of curiosity - what do you use for weather planning? Really think your channel is underrated - should be at 8000 by new years....at least!!
Thank you for sharing your adventure, a question, why motor over sail, I’m making my plans and obviously sail is cheaper, but is motor just less complicated ?
I have never sailed and would not have been able to get Fiona along on a sail boat. Also did want a few more creature comforts. Next thing is I like living above the water not below. Oh and next sail boats noisy and next don’t want to live at an angle next one mistake on your own and you are in trouble next bit old to learn that many new tricks I think great if you have sailed or are a sailor but motor for me. Having said all that I absolutely get how amazing it must feel to cross oceans under your own power.
Lovin your content Mark, given your recent promotion to ‘chief do everything officer’ have you looked at ‘Dockmate’. Others have sung its praises when single handed anchoring and close quarter manoeuvring. When you get a spare couple of minutes 😂😂😂😂 Kia Kaha

Thanks so much, yip it was interesting. Not too keen on much bigger seas unless longer periods between swells
Absolutely amazing. You are living the dream, Mark. I am so jealous . Maybe, I should start playing the euro millions.
Just pick something and do it

What a dag we went to England on the Southern Cross in 66. Yip got a few across the bum at Scots. Prefects were allowed to administer 1!!
@AwanuiNZ Forgot to add, I left NZ in October 1965. I only intended to be away for three months, but it took me 43 years to go back for a holiday.
Really enjoyed seeing Awanui NZ handling some rough weather with ease, it'll give you confidence for future adventures.
Absolutely it has…just uncomfortable
Awesome life story ! Thanks for that !

Yeah, did go for dinner in St.Tropez twenty years ago in high season and remember it hit my budget big time.
Good job for taking Vince onboard heading towards North-western Europe. 👍
It’s been great down the Spanish Coast. It is very likely going to change.
Awesome video Mark. Nice to put some personal history in the mix. Gives some context to everything that goes on.
All the best for the next phase of the adventure in learning how to do nothing.
Adventure or serious almost impossible challenge?
What a fascinating episode. Thank you for sharing your life story. I enjoyed the passage to Minorca. It looks cold!
Not cold but a little intimidating
I knew you’d been a pilot, but the whole story was enjoyable. Thank you for sharing.
Hey no worries
Loving every minute of this and all your other videos. Nice work, thank you.
Glad you like them!
Really interesting hearing your story👍
My boy worked as cabin crew on the 787s for ANZ when they first started using them. His name was William Lawless. Don’t know if you’d have crossed paths but you never know.

Wonderful life story Mark, but it's amazing how the harder you guys worked the luckier you get, great team Fiona and yourself.
And yes slowing down is hard for some of us 😂
Yip sure is
sure it was no fun for you but loved seeing the N51 handling the rough ocean
It was uncomfortable that’s for sure but once anchored quickly forgotten. Best thing was we felt safe
Now listened to that Mate. Split Enz
6 Months in a Leaky Boat. One of the best!
Not suggesting Awanui NZ is leaky ❤

Mark, enjoying your ventures. We too need coffee, so our motorhome has a wee machine 900 watts, with frother. Rick

Correct
She's so steady with the stabilisation on

the book you are reading its a good one
It was, all done and dusted
Handled those big seas with aplomb. That must give you some confidence about ocean passages.

I reckon 2 weights on a belt will be all you need to achieve neutral buoyancy so you aren't fighting to stay down. More if you wear a wetsuit.
Yes have actually got some so should wear them to make it easier eh
Why don't you run your nav display track up ? - surely that's a better option.
I do but it flicks around when you go to a smaller scale…Garmin thing. Certainly run track up when underway
Ok so seas cut up that night so I stayed aboard and watched the game. No too rough to cook. Just dry food
Well Mark! Another great video.! What a great passage to Menorca. Good you had a few people to relieve you on the watch. And a good passage to get a feel of the capabilities of Awanui NZ. I use Predict Wind. It’s good. I double everything and check if I am happy with that as a number…being pretty cautious
Thank goodness
I did notice you good with maps, After listening your story no wonder.retired pilot.😅 you done wel
Certainly helped moving from planes to boats
Yip it can get pretty rough in theMed,we hired a small sailing yacht got out the harbour and the rudder and tiller broke off the boat and we had to swim to the rescue boat after tying a tow rope.
Wow that would be scary
@@AwanuiNZ It was`nt a flat white and a pastry,hehe.
Nice one Mark, ANZ seemed to be fine. How were the stabilizers?

Stabilisers were great 6kts
Greetings Mark
Stumbled across your VLOG recently and am enjoying following your travels on your N51 - safe travels
Your vlogs while in the Cote d'Azur especially interesting as I'll be in that part of the world next July/August so thanks to you have some ideas of additional places to check-out (Antibes etc.)
Live in Sydney now but am a Hutt Valley boy myself having been born and raised in Lower Hutt (Avalon) - have fond memories of trips to Maidstone Mall in Upper Hutt, Te Marua Speedway and Cobb & Co. Tavern in Trentham as a kid, not to mention getting carsick whenever we traveled over the Rimutaka's on the way to Caterton/Greytown etc.
Wanted to ask - I 'think' I saw an episode where you travelled by car (cab?) through Alexandria (or was it Cairo?) and this footage went on for a good 10-15 mins as you drove through the city - you were pulled over by police at some point - can't find it now and want to revisit - what episode chronicles that particular part of your adventure?
There was also footage of you taking in the Suez Canal whereupon you had to leg it as the cops on the other side of the canal spotted you filming, got 'excited' and started heading over to your side of the river to 'have a word'..
Keen to watch both again
All the best

@@AwanuiNZ E33 - many thanks
'She' is a gorgeous launch, she really is.
Just a quickkie. Is your Garmin show drive connected to the hydraulics? I caught a glimpse in an earlier video and it was fixed horizontally to some pipework but no obvious hydraulic lines on your shots. It would not surprise me if it was just sitting there!
Disconnected now with a coupler in between. Just the one line into the manifold had it on it as you saw it.
Awanui NZ would make anybody happy doing nowt.
You make a good point
How is the ultra anchor performing? It's a bit of a loyalist thing among boaties. A bit like Ford v Holden. Cars to non Antipodeans. Though with Awanui NZ a 4WD comparison might be more appropriate. Toyota v Ford say.
Love the anchor…he is my mate!
Very disapointed when you put the Trump hat on Mark . . . You didnt do the Trump dance baby . . Lol
Great video . .
Take care👍👋🇳🇿🍻twa
Haha next time…not sure I will be wearing it that much…bit of a dag
@AwanuiNZ wear it with pride mate . .
Sounds like “ no pass Parker “ yep I failed my first time to, I’m the same age as you.

I will…..you can send to Renee….she owes me
Yeah another fellow baby boomer who knows what he wants - great vid Mark

How big is Vince’s boat?
Vince has a 43..__at the moment!!
Why no subtitles?
Working on it
Thanks when is possible in Dutch
weird John Deere is made here in the USA and everything is metric. or maybe they not made here
Who would know these days.
Mark, maybe not a good cap!
I hear you but to be fair given Ian’s generosity Imdid need to recognise it and put it on. Last thing I want is for the Chanel,to get political.
@ I totally understand if a good patron.
It's a great cap. Wear what you like. Not someone else's distant political leanings. It'll keep the sun out of your eyes just fine.
You do need a crew
Certainly helps
missing subtitles
Mmm….not sure how to do that….will check it out. Would, they show on everyone’s or just those, who select it?
They should appear automatically as an option once the AI manages to decipher Mark”s accent. 😅 Cheers!
