  • Lucas lives with myotubular myopathy, a condition that leaves his muscles so weak that he can only move a few fingers. He desires connection with other kids, but struggles to create friendships because he cannot do many of the things other teenagers enjoy. Lucas wants others to know that if you want to be his friend just talk to him about his interests, like board games and music.

A good way to look at discipline is doing everything to make things easier for your future self.
Like not leaving your dishes in the sink but washing them and putting them away so that your future self doesn't have to be bothered with it later that day or the following day.
Bring your shoes to the shop to fix the soles so that your future self doesn't have to do it next week.
Cleaning the aquarium so that your future self is not beating himself up because you postponed.
      Etc.

Agreed. I have learned so much from watching these interviews. When you see a disabled person out in public, it is impossible to have a meaningful conversation with them. Listening to these interviews provides such a deep insight into who they are & their view on the world. The diversity of their emotional states are very interesting. I can only think of one person that had a negative impression though. And they were probably just having a bad moment in time. These are brave human beings. I'm inspired to be better.

when i was really young (2nd grade maybe?) there was a disabled student in my class who i now understand had a speech disability. none of the teachers or staff took the time to explain this to us, so when i couldn’t understand her, i asked the teacher what language she spoke out of genuine curiosity and hopes of learning about her. instead of educating me and facilitating conversation, she yelled at me for being rude, saying things like “how dare you” and “shame on you.” it took a long time for me to learn that it’s ok to not be able to understand someone and ask for help if available; everyone deserves to be spoken to! thanks for showing us this

Unfortunately some of these people choose for some inexplicable reason to have children or to marry into families with children. I'm really sorry you didn't have the dad you deserved to have.
SBSK does a wonderful job of showing what true family love and devotion is all about. Not only do they show amazing human beings living with and overcoming their limitations, but they remind us that wonderful people and true family love is out there. When it was said that he was in eighth grade it really blew me away, because I was very much similar as an eighth grader, but I would have assumed he was more around my age (20) from the way he speaks and carries himself intellectually and emotionally! I agree that having a Disability often does make us more observant and developed, not because we’re born super humans or anything, but just because we navigate an inaccessible world and grow up a little bit faster than other kids. I don’t know of many other 8th grade boys who would have similar perspectives as him, that’s a really absurdly tough age to be a kid! I wonder if an exoskeleton could be helpful for people like Lucas, and other with similar disorders like muscular dystrophy? It's a device that a person wears on their arms or legs to increase their physical strength. It's basically like a set of shirt sleeves or pants, that have robotic arms or legs inside, that fit on top of a person's own limbs, in order to increase their physical strength when they move and lift things. The device is meant for non disabled people to be able to lift heavy objects that they normally wouldn't be able to lift, like boxes in a warehouse, for example. But I wonder if anyone has ever thought about trying them for people with disabilities, where their muscles are extremely weak, but they do have some movement. It seems like the device could increase what little movement and physical strength they do have so that they could do more. I've seen videos about exoskeletons before, but actually I'm not even sure if they actually exist for non-disabled people, let alone disabled people. I think the ones that exist now are only prototypes.

I’ve been watching for years but I LOVE SBSK for concentrating on our friends with disabilities. SBSK’s mission is so important. I love how Chris asks the questions that many may feel uncomfortable to ask. I think many people avoid asking these questions because they don’t want to offend, they don’t want to sound rude, or they just don’t know how to approach. As Chris and our friends show, asking those questions is okay & it’s not inappropriate. We are humans living together, respecting each other.

This kid is awesome, huge heart and great personality. People who judge people like him need a reality check, and I've seen many people who love to tease the disabled. I wish more people had an open mind and wouldn't judge so quickly, more people need to look into this and improve their opinions and thoughts. Anyway, much love to Lucas and others like him and everyone else in the world living with a disability.

I worked as a caregiver for a young woman with CP. she was very hard to understand for other people but once you got to know her it was easy for me to understand her. It just takes time to adjust to their speech patterns. Be patient and don’t be afraid to politely ask them to repeat what they have said. Don’t be embarrassed if you can’t understand something, just be honest and straightforward.

All SBSK videos are interesting (huge under-statement) and so informative and worth watching, but meeting Lucas particularly struck me, and I found this hugely moving. We are all so impatient in my family (although I am working on that and am better than I was) - and I find Lucas extraordinary in the way he deals with the considerable challenges that are present pretty well all the time. It's clear he is a bright, perceptive young man. I would love to read his short stories. He has wonderful parents with a great sense of humour and a lovely sister - and I like her honesty too!
PS Lucas, I have only read #1 (it's nearly midnight here) but I think it's brilliant. It really resonates with me because late at night a neighbouring cat often comes into our garden, mewing, looking for next door's cat (who is tiny and dainty but really feisty) and I think this cat is looking for a fight! I just love your writing style - and I look forward to reading more tomorrow.
