Even though I'm not planning on tuning the engine on my 964, it is SO HELPFUL to watch your videos because you get that perfect understanding of how it's assembled! Brilliant.
I’m just in love with how excited you where to find out your engine was destroyed on one cylinder I would have been gutted Awesome attitude Keep the videos coming
Wow what an amazing build. I've been binge watching your videos, all through out yesterday. Awesome work, I got to learn so much about Porsches and cars in general. I am an engineer myself, with roots in Formula SAE, and I gotta say your decisions, design and engineering has ticked all the right boxes for me. Personally I love 3d printing there are so many materials available and you can almost print anything. Thanks for sharing your build with the automotive community in RUclips, your channel is highly underrated. Happy New Year 2021, and good luck on your car build and future episodes.
Thank you that is really great feedback! I do my best solving/inventing as I go. In the end I will have my dream car! Keep watching and happy new year!
Good move taking the steering pump off. It's surprising how much power mechanical accessories steal, while the alternator takes nothing. Going to an electric pump is free power (except for the money haha).
It might have been. I followed the maker specification though and measured twice. The root cause analysis has so far said it’s damage due to overheating caused by too much pre-ignition.
Great work and super interesting. You seem to know how things need to be done.👍 Do you have a car mechanic background or just learned all by DIY over the years? Would you recommend your distributor upgrade on a street leagal 993 as well? This solution was really interesting and would love to find out a bit more about it. Cheers from Mallorca 😎
I’m DIY based with an engineering background. The distributor less ignition is good for looks and weight saving, but does nothing else unless you’re building a very high revving engine. Thanks for the comment!
That’s very inspiring. Myself I,m planning to work on my 993 from engine to regular maintenance ect . (The car is currently undergoing a full 993 Speedster rebuild so what better way and perfect moment to see you doing this great project of yours👍 It’s inspiring . Keep up the good work👍
Hi, i am considering getting a JE piston set like yours. I have a 993 1996 C2 that is a 3.6L. The heads are out getting valve seats and valve guides. if I get a 3.8L set do I have to get new cams or can I use the ones I have? I am finding out that the piston/cylinder set is the easy part and that maybe I have to change lots of other items. Is this so??
Too bad you could weight the missing part of piston. Joke aside, damn that went wrong, you're kinda putting a lot of pressure on all 964 owners driving theirs hard too. I don't think I'd be happy to redo my engine, forgotten if a cylinder looked like this. But I guess it's the price on the long run.
Sorry to see about cylinder number 1. What benefits do you feel the clewitt serpentine conversion gave you? Wanting to convert my 964 to a single belt “RS conversion”. And had never seen this solution for that before.
@@islandworks the guys at Classic Retrofit recommend a serpentine conversion to get maximum power out of their up-rated 240A alternator. There's some concern that replacing the crank pulley with an un-damped one is potentially bad for a stock 964 crank, apparently less risky on a 993 or later crank.
@@mawe42 I need to check the injectors. I would be surprised if this is because of running too high lambdas (single lambda in previous setup) as I was running rich on higher revs and powers. I filed the rings in to specs in the usual manner and measured and checked all of them to the cylinders they were going.

Hi from SoCal. 964 Owner. 👍. Street setup ... Sorry to see, but, certainly fun to watch and learn, thanks for sharing ...
Just found your channel and I look forward to following your 964 journey.
Welcome to the fun!

Was waiting for this episode! Keep up the good work. Love from Belgium
Let me know what you think afterwards ;-). Not all efforts are without backlashes!

Awesome content
Whooohoooo more Porsche projects.!!
Oh Yes Mertens!
thank you for your work so sorry for you. Your car will be pretty owesome !
A kind word is always appreciated! I will get it fixed and continue building!
wow, I was checking the last two days wondering. Thanks for the upload, Merry (early) Christmas
Merry Christmas!
@@islandworks , sorry about your engine.
I’ll wish for new gifts so I can fix it!
Great video, Top notch!
Great build and content.. SUBSCRIBED 🚗
Thanks! More to come!
Your car looks more like a car again now!
Soon it will drive again!
it looks like your ring clearance might have been too tight
It might have been. I followed the maker specification though and measured twice. The root cause analysis has so far said it’s damage due to overheating caused by too much pre-ignition.
The ring land failed, probably welded itself to the bore.
Wallet is going to be lighter after this. So there is the weight saving for this episode 😱
There you go! I’m sorry I didn’t think about that. Would have been a great exit scene!
Even your pistons try to save weight on their own
That’s very kind of them ;-)

Great vid as usual. Could you let us know where in the US you ordered the engine stand adapter please
I just did some digging in my files and found that I bought it from Zalexindustries in CA.
@@islandworks thank you for that.

You don’t have to change cams to do that, but you will have to do a remap/upgrade of the ECU as the engine is no longer the same.
@@islandworks Thanks that's good news.

Agree, the weight saving was there after all! Now I just need to understand why it happened so I can fix it!
Sorry to see about cylinder number 1. What benefits do you feel the clewitt serpentine conversion gave you? Wanting to convert my 964 to a single belt “RS conversion”. And had never seen this solution for that before.
It’s nice esthetically and has worked well for me. I don’t think there is any other quantifiable gain except that though.

I know about the issue with a 964 crank that relies on the external damper. The GT3 crank that I use does not rely on that and is fine without.
Looks like detonation damage.
You might be right. I’m going to check the others to see if I can find any indication of lean condition.
@@islandworks Send out your injectors for a flow check.
Could be to tight of a piston ring gap too. Did you record what gap you set?
