Despite how good of a job this game does, at giving the player an impression of what depression is like, I couldn't help but snicker at the rastafari parody by Jesse: "'Ey mon', we store your body i here!"
I think the Old Lady in the woods is Despair. It's why she can say she's more powerful then gods, similar to death, and why some people can adore her or seek her out. It also explains how she can have a lot of names, and why she gets associated with maggots. There's also all the symbolism and sadness and being near death or dying instead of actually being dead (and the whole depression thing of "I'd rather be dead, I don't want to continue and be stuck here" mentality). It also explains why, instead of a heart attack, or a car crash, or other accidental death, the candle snuff comitted suicide, and how she can give Susan immortality (it adds to her despair), and how she can take away the pain, without really saying how.
The Old Lady in the woods is the spiritual/physical representation of Susan's depression, for anyone wondering. That's why she says she's always been with her, because Susan has been depressed for some time now, we're never told how long. It's why she describes herself as perhaps being 'Life' either because many people's depression stems from their negative perceptions of life and their own lives. _"I rarely invite people in..."_
Interesting theory, except that she was also in Harvester Games' last game, Downfall. My personal theory is that she's a parasite of sorts. Susan's ability is her own, not something given to her by the Queen of Maggots. The Queen just happened to take advantage of the first time Susan dies to give the impression that it's a gift from *her.* This way, she can manipulate Susan into doing what she wants, for whatever reason.
Too long to be adequately done as a movie. Unless they do sequels. Or go for the amazing giant length movie (pls yes movie industry) But currently it's too likely to be misrepresented if it were a big name movie As in the main character would be portrayed by someone too beautiful They would most likely change or take out scenes because a lot of this game is made of puzzles, and so on
I honestly consider this to be a defining game in my life. I suffer from anxiety, PTSD, and more than anything, depression. Although this game is very odd, it does have it's moments that really reveal how isolating these problems can be.
That old lady and the candles remind me of an old Polish fairy tale about a doctor who had an agreement with Death. In the end he goes to her home, a cave filled with candles, each representing a single life. I'm wondering if guys who made it are Polish themselves or maybe if that tale is more international than I thought. Key points are the candles and Death being a woman which is logical since death is a feminine noun in that language.
If Jesse's voice wasn't in this, I would have been scared to hell because this is the most INSANE, UNCOMFORTABLE, CREEPIEST EXPERIENCE I HAVE EVER GONE THROUGH!!!! And this is just the first of many videos.
I was only planning on watching 2 mins of this, this looks both brilliantly designed both in story and art, and you make it even more entertaining with the commenting, great job, I now want to play it.
Seeing games like this and talking with other depressed people really helps with my own depression. It makes me realize that this is not the kind of person I want to be and I have to work hard to change it. Thank you for the video Jesse and I would like to see you play more of it.
This game has one of the most compelling horror stories I have ever seen, it's really well done, aside from some of the voice acting here and there, everything about this is pretty fantastic.
Darius Zica It doesn't have jump scares (and the scary moments just have a sting) so just scroll down and you'll be fine. Its worth it it's a cool story.
I don't think he's saying that, but the character does have a whiny tone of how she doesn't wanna do it, she doesn't wanna live, she doesn't wanna do anything....that's all he meant. I don't believe he's saying that people with depression are whiners.
***** Well thats really insensitive then. That "whining" that you complain about is what a person with terminal depression feels every day. Its not like they can just 'get over it'. This game is meant to convey some of those feelings to the player so they can get some insight into the disease. Its really annoying when people just dismiss depression as 'whining' because it isnt. They cant help how they feel.
Strong Bad Well that's just how Jesse is alas but I do doubt that if you were to meet him in real life that he'd say that people with depression are all whiners. What he said is really more of a spur of the moment comment w/o much thought. We all do such things and never think twice despite it being taken so seriously like it is now.
***** I hope you are right about that. I try to let things like this slide. But the central theme of this game IS depression so i dunno, it kinda bugged me.
Oh I do understand where you're coming from. I mean there's moments in gaming where I hated on the lil kid character who'd always whine about everything, I'd totally ignore the fact his parents were killed and blah blah but since it's a game we don't treat it like real life. In real life if a kid had lost his parents I wouldn't blame him for being unhappy and constantly asking "where's momma?!".
the writer really did nail the "person who is terminally depressed" really well with Susan, in how she explains how she feels and the result of when someone acts on those feelings
Cry did a complete playthrough of this, and its a totally awesome dark story. It has a hell of a story, in fact. It also has multiple endings, according to the actions you take. This would be fun and amazing to watch played through again, this time by you, Jesse. This game really deserves some attention, cause despite the premise...its a damn good story.
I had the worst stomach cramp the entire time I was watching this! It is a very disturbing game. That being said, Jesse! Keep playing! You and this game are a very interesting combination!
Oh, you prolly won't read this Jesse, but I just played and beat this game because of this video. My god was it amazing. I took my time, and because of it, got one of the most satisfying endings I've ever seen in a game. This might be a backwater indie title, but god damn if it isn't the best game I've played in half a decade. If you play it, I suggest either taking your time on it, or looking up how to get the best ending. Cause it's a real treat.
I would personally love to see you play more of this. It's a GREAT game and for me when I first watched an LP of it I literally fell in love with the game because it was something that I could relate to. Plus it's realistic in many ways I think you'd enjoy it. More needs to be done :)
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE KEEP PLAYING THIS!!! :D It's super weird and interesting, and I wanna know what happens next, but I'm too much of a chicken to play it myself! PLEASE JESSE!
Different circumstances coupled with different mentalities lead to different mental states. The main character portrayed here is obviously of age and it is implied she has been lonely for a while. This can and does cause the mind to invent scenarios, often twisted and surreal. This so far seems like a great showing of such a mental state.
you will,Jessie said in on of his Q&A's he was going to be going back to Skyrim, restarting Terraria with TB(probably after the game's 1.2 content update hits) doing Dead Space 3 with him and Dodger, Omikron: The nomad soul, and Cat Lady
P.S . I think many people , even if they are nt Cat ladies persay .....I really think the character reaches out to many emo or people who are in the bit on the life is low side. but even people who enjoy a bit a twists and weird things like the evil dead movie gore or the mysterious ly weird.. I dont write to you much because u know best. but this is a very good choice for a walkththrough. GO FOR IT.
Yeah play some more of it.. it is morbidly interesting.. Really strong and strange topics here like suicide and depression but it always has that wierd sense of uneasyness that anything might happen and you really can't look away. It keeps you on your toes and the voice actors does an awesome job.
I absolutely love existential esoteric nonsense like this, if you know games which are as out there as this, can you suggest a few please? Much obliged. And Jesse, I think all of your viewership, myself included, would most likely grow as a person because of playing this through with you. Please, continue!
Despite how good of a job this game does, at giving the player an impression of what depression is like, I couldn't help but snicker at the rastafari parody by Jesse: "'Ey mon', we store your body i here!"
I'm not ashamed to say I didn't snicker, I fell out laughing!
I think the Old Lady in the woods is Despair. It's why she can say she's more powerful then gods, similar to death, and why some people can adore her or seek her out. It also explains how she can have a lot of names, and why she gets associated with maggots.

Still my favourite LP for some reason. Deals with strangely real topics in seeming surreal yet realistic ways. Great music, too
For me it's time for a rewatch.
its October again, the time has come again to watch this lets play
The Old Lady in the woods is the spiritual/physical representation of Susan's depression, for anyone wondering. Talamasca wham
If this was a movie, holy shit it would be epic!
Yeah totally let's narrow the experience down!
Too long to be adequately done as a movie.
Unless they do sequels. Or go for the amazing giant length movie (pls yes movie industry)
But currently it's too likely to be misrepresented if it were a big name movie
As in the main character would be portrayed by someone too beautiful
They would most likely change or take out scenes because a lot of this game is made of puzzles, and so on
It would be a true horror movie at least. Not all this crap that's just throwing gore and cheap scares....for the most part.
Wow, guys no need to go too deep into this, I was only saying it would make a epic film :P
I honestly consider this to be a defining game in my life. I suffer from anxiety, PTSD, and more than anything, depression. Although this game is very odd, it does have it's moments that really reveal how isolating these problems can be.

It's like equal levels of brilliance and equal levels of pretentious bullshit.
THE PERFECT COMBINATION
If Jesse's voice wasn't in this, I would have been scared to hell because this is the most INSANE, UNCOMFORTABLE, CREEPIEST EXPERIENCE I HAVE EVER GONE THROUGH!!!!
And this is just the first of many videos.
Try Saya No Uta (Song of Saya)
FinalFantasyBlades Saya No Uta was nothing big. kinda meh in my opinion... but still did hit a few weird notes...
THE WINDOW!! I get it now! the one place that changed it all....
"My name is Susan Ashworth."
Me: Hi, Aunt Sue!
OH GOD THAT IS HER ARM!!! LOL
I would absolutely love to see more of you play through this. These bonkers, off-the-wall, weird games are so intriguing!
Jesse! Tomorrow it will be a full year since you started doing Fan Friday! Thank you for all the fun content so far :)
just by the name I would have to ask why you're not playing this with Dodger.
A weird, messed up game about cats? Seems to be a perfect game for Dodger :)
Anyone also here to finish prequels before watching Jesse's Lorelai play through? :D
You can tell the creators did a great job creating this game with the topics they chose. Would really love to see more!
I was only planning on watching 2 mins of this, this looks both brilliantly designed both in story and art, and you make it even more entertaining with the commenting, great job, I now want to play it.
Such an amazing game.
Best ending ever
Personally, I think Susan is just a serial killer and this is her delusion that starts her spree.
ILikeTheThingsIDo I like this theory.
Jesse, what would it take for you to do Saya no Uta?
That game has amazing story but the sex scenes kinda creep me out
wait a game about dodger?
I haven't even watched the video yet and I'm uncomfortable!
yeah i dont think im gonna watch it
Darius Zica It doesn't have jump scares (and the scary moments just have a sting) so just scroll down and you'll be fine. Its worth it it's a cool story.
That game is creepy and unsettling. But having Jesse there made it all worthwhile! I'd love a full playthrough!
Jesse!!! I`m so happy you did played this! It only gets better! I hope you play all the game because it is really short and have a great story!!!
This is over the top i admit...but i wish Jesse wouldnt consider serious Depression as "whining"
I don't think he's saying that, but the character does have a whiny tone of how she doesn't wanna do it, she doesn't wanna live, she doesn't wanna do anything....that's all he meant. I don't believe he's saying that people with depression are whiners.

Bizarre games like this seem right up your alley, Jesse. I'd love to see a playthrough on this.
the writer really did nail the "person who is terminally depressed" really well with Susan, in how she explains how she feels and the result of when someone acts on those feelings
Holy hell, Jesse! Just watched a bit more of another youtuber's let's play of this game.... and I would love, love, love to see you play more!!!!!

Music at that room with cross was just amazing!
I had the worst stomach cramp the entire time I was watching this! It is a very disturbing game. That being said, Jesse! Keep playing! You and this game are a very interesting combination!
I like that Jesse doesn't think it would be weird with a game where you're a crazy cat lady throwing cats :)
oh jesse trying to save people even in the weird cat lady game! thats why ur the best!!
what a peace of art! please play more of it.
This game is a masterpiece, it made me shed many tears in the end ;-;

I would love to see more of this! Please make a series of this :D
I would personally love to see you play more of this. It's a GREAT game and for me when I first watched an LP of it I literally fell in love with the game because it was something that I could relate to. Plus it's realistic in many ways I think you'd enjoy it. More needs to be done :)

Very intriguing. Thanks for doing a play through on this. If you haven't, I would have never got to see some awesome work.
You should do a play through of this Jesse, it's very weird but as you said it's highly entertaining and I personally want to see what happens next.
I know, and I've played the whole game so I know how crazy it gets. It's awesome from beginning to end. One of my favorites.
You heard the people, Jessie! We need to see a play through of this!
jessy this is one of those games that we just have to see you play
You have to keep playing this!!!
The intro was awesome!!!
Please play through this jesse, I really want to see more of the story but I dont want to play through it myself, so please continue this.
I'm convinced whoever made this game experienced all those things in some sort of weird depression-filled fever dream. No other explanation.
I would love to see a full playthrough of this! I'm very intrigued to see what happens.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE KEEP PLAYING THIS!!! :D It's super weird and interesting, and I wanna know what happens next, but I'm too much of a chicken to play it myself! PLEASE JESSE!

Continue please, the story is damn strange but it is amazing at the same time.
More, please, for the love of the old gods, new gods, and god of light, please continue!
This is horrifying, I don't know if I should keep watching or hide behind Jesse!
I shouldn't have watched this by myself so late at night. but yes jesse, do a series out of this
PLEASE finish this game! it's absolutely bonkers and I love it!
Full playthrough please, if only for the music. wow. That was amazing, just wow
you will,Jessie said in on of his Q&A's he was going to be going back to Skyrim, restarting Terraria with TB(probably after the game's 1.2 content update hits) doing Dead Space 3 with him and Dodger, Omikron: The nomad soul, and Cat Lady
haven't been so entertained by a game for a long time, really dragged me in this story
I'd love to see more of this one!
GO FOR IT.

Please, please, do a LP of this. That intro is not just something you can walk away from.
a playthrough would be awesome, Jesse!
This is my favorite game. Thank you so much Jesse
Yeah play some more of it.. it is morbidly interesting.. Really strong and strange topics here like suicide and depression but it always has that wierd sense of uneasyness that anything might happen and you really can't look away. It keeps you on your toes and the voice actors does an awesome job.
Jesse, that is obviously the Devil.
More Coxncrendor In the Morning please!!!
I absolutely love existential esoteric nonsense like this, if you know games which are as out there as this, can you suggest a few please? Much obliged.
And Jesse, I think all of your viewership, myself included, would most likely grow as a person because of playing this through with you. Please, continue!
A playthrough of some sort of this game would be beyond awesome...
