One of my favorite pieces. As a bassoonist, winds just don’t have the ability to do the same justice as Yo-Yo Ma does on cello. Bone chilling beautiful work.
4:08 the way the opening theme comes back with more bright harmonies than before, but with a sort of new emotional rush on the part of yo-yo, just wrecks me. this performance can't be topped
The adagio from his 2nd symphony can a similar impact on one's perspective of love and loss - it does for me. Rachmaninoff is on a high spiritual and emotional plane than most
Yo-Yo Ma’s playing was so heart-wrenching and magical, very powerful !! Only a genius can produce this voice of soul-searching and humanity. Ma at his best!!
This performance took place on the day after Horowitz died. One can only think it was made as an elegy to the passing of a great musician. Ma soars to passionate heights like no other, even Rostropovich.
For me, the tone, and especially the power, of vibrancy, the motion of Rostropovich, especially in the lower registers. No one comes near Horowitz's touch.
This performance by Yo Yo and Emanuel stands right next to one recorded in the early early 70's....Paul Tortelier and Aldo Ciccollini...for me both are exceptional and worthy of a place in eternity.xx
Beautiful. Gratefully to Yo Yo Ma & Emanuel Ax. Please also listen to Julian Lloyd Weber & Yitkin Seow for their very personalied, understanding and heart-felt take on this. My utmost respect to all musicians of this calibre. Thanks
I must say I agree with you horobitch. Rachmaninoff called this his sonata for cello and piano, but I think Ax is still a little too heavy-handed, especially in the beginning of the movement. Ax sounds like he's taking an axe to the piano in spots, his tone is so obtrusive. Compare Horowitz/Rostropovich - the two give and take in equal measure, a true ensemble.
I will always laugh at people asking for LESS emotion from music! It's one of Yo Yo Ma's greatest talents to let his soul ring out through his cello, leave him alone.

the last piece that my dad played before he die. forever has a special meaning in my heart 💜
Wow, as a final resting piece I'm sure it was so beautiful. Sorry for your loss, may your father rest in peace.
Have loved this sonata for 74 years and I never tire of it. It always envelops me….every time💕💕💕👏👏
One of my favorite pieces. As a bassoonist, winds just don’t have the ability to do the same justice as Yo-Yo Ma does on cello. Bone chilling beautiful work.
Who knew that the same note, played over and over, could be so beautiful? 3:10
Amazing, absolutely fantastic
Such a powerful interpretation. Incredible musicianship!
I am listening to your dialogue with watery eyes. Thank you 🌷🌷🌷 ( Netherlands- 2024 )
Call and respond , what a dialogue of beauty .I almost started to love the scoundrels of this planet.
4:08 the way the opening theme comes back with more bright harmonies than before, but with a sort of new emotional rush on the part of yo-yo, just wrecks me. this performance can't be topped
No words can express this compositor and Ma's performance.
Words always fail me at the beauty of Rachmaninov's music. This performance just amplifies that a thousand fold
So,so beutiful.so yearning
Two performance stars playing the work of a star-composer. You will never be the same, once you hear this. The whole sonata is really special.
The adagio from his 2nd symphony can a similar impact on one's perspective of love and loss - it does for me. Rachmaninoff is on a high spiritual and emotional plane than most
@@peterbrenton410 I feel the exact same way about exactly the same pieces.
Yo-Yo Ma’s playing was so heart-wrenching and magical, very powerful !! Only a genius can produce this voice of soul-searching and humanity. Ma at his best!!
For me both Yo-Yo and Tortelier are the best playing this cello sonata.
this is my favorite version of the piece... it's magical
This performance took place on the day after Horowitz died. One can only think it was made as an elegy to the passing of a great musician. Ma soars to passionate heights like no other, even Rostropovich.
He'll live on as long as this piece is performed, which God willing, will be as long as there are humans.
For me, the tone, and especially the power, of vibrancy, the motion of Rostropovich, especially in the lower registers. No one comes near Horowitz's touch.
sublime interprétation , je suis transportée . Divin. Merci pour ce moment
Hermosa Obra, música sublime del gran Rachmaninov.
Wonderful recital The recital by Horowitz and Rostropovich transcends all but thisis amazing also.
So beautiful!

Corinne Jones Here’s another to try, different but so expressive. Could it become #3 on your list?: m.ruclips.net/video/-fxcM2Tlm8U/видео.html
sin duda la mejor version. imposible mejorar.
gracias
Bravo Yo yo Ma and Emanuel.
Perfect
Why do I get watery eyes? 🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷 (Netherlands 2024 )
Amazing!...
Otroligt vackert 💚
Just glorious
Sensacional.

It's heartbreaking.
Very beautiful, want to write lyrics and sing it. I thought it sounded like Rachmaniff, too.
Good!
Is there a CD from this?
This is not a cello sonata, it is a sonata for cello and piano, both performers co-equal.
Amazing... A youtube comment section without memes
3:24 vibrato overkill!
Holy fck
Clapping in between movements >:(
Because this is an encore song.
And with that interpretation it’s hard to contain claps
Justin Hammer brought me here

Are you deaf?!
Performance by yo yo ma is execellent. but piano.. piano is so assertive. it ruins cello sounds. even horowitz played piano modestly for Rostropovich.
I think it sounds just about right. Rachmaninoff intended for the cello and piano to be equals for this composition.
for some reason i prefer this version even over the remastered version
Richard Mendoza is right--Rachmaninov called it his sonata for cello and piano.

I am better than him
Who isn't? So easy. Pfft.
Nah your on to something
Too much emotion from the cello. Not necessary as it is in the music.
I will always laugh at people asking for LESS emotion from music! It's one of Yo Yo Ma's greatest talents to let his soul ring out through his cello, leave him alone.
This piece cries out for a cellist capable of that deep level of emotion that rachmaninoff wrote into it.
Yo yo Ma does it beautifully.
