As a young teenager I got in shape, was able to train myself to do all these kicks and do the splits on chairs all because of this movie. LOL. The good ol days.

This was the mortal kombat movie for us before they made one
Mortal Kombat was basically based off of this. Johnny cage was obviously Jean-Claude Van Damme. Liu Kang was Bruce Lee. Jax was Mike Tyson. I’m sure I’m missing some but there were definitely influences.

As a Muay Thai fighter, and a Millennial that watched this movie growing up in the 90s this makes me so proud.
Shut up.
That Muay Thai fighter did not use his most effective weapons: knees, elbows and shins. Except for the front stance it did not resemble Muay Thai that could have given Van Damme a run for his money.
Also no clinch, no teeps, he use wide attacks.....i got similar problem with movie Kickboxer, a lot people were convinced that thai fighters have ridiculous guard, like they try to hug a tree. The Quest managed to show better Muay Thai, a pity that thai fighter in this movie lost to bad guy @@StephenBoesch

I was 20 when this came out and everyone at the time believed it was true. We didn't have the internet to check on stories like the ones frank Dux and Steven Seagal told. Back then George DIlman still had to touch you to knock you out. Ninjas were kind of becoming a thing of the past as far as their supposed abilities were concerned. I think some of the higher ups knew it was BS but just didn't care, shows like this brought in more students to the clubs.
Sadly we all wasted a lot of time when all we needed was the crane kick. You know if done proper, no can defend.

Well, it was actually based on a real overseas tournament, and Dux did compete. Of course, the fights in the movie were ridiculously fake, as the UFC showed years later. Dux's real final fight in his last tournament was a loss after they went to the ground and Dux was submitted. 90% of the stuff in the movie is made up, but yes, that tournament was a real thing for years.
I just loved Paco . No frills . Manly . Lethal. I think Chong Li respected him .

Chong Li was more focused on studying both Fighters one more time because whoever the winner was is who he was going to have to face.

The best part of these end scenes is that the guys who were sent to take Dux back get so into the fights…

Fun fact This Movie inspired Mortal Kombat, The creator of UFC 1 said his event UFC it's inspired by Mortal Kombat this movie it's very important to MMA world.
MK was also heavily influenced by Enter the Dragon.

This is my favorite martial arts movie when I first saw this movie I was like 8 or 9 years old now I'm 43 and this film is still my favorite this is a master piece.
This movie really made a good job of establishing Jean Claude’s attributes as a fighter which mostly included his funny screams like in this one when he was screaming during the kicking exchange and going “hit me hit me!!” lol
Paco could've won if he'd just gone in for the kill after the cheap shot.
I like the nervous "tick" that Paco has--the way he keeps jerking his head to the side. It gives him personality.
God I loved this movie. Had the poster on my wall forEVER. Had just started Karate myself. Liked how it showed all different styles. Still love JCVD 💪❤

This movie was my first exposure to Forest Whitaker Eye
Funny how Van Dam remembering this in his old age, as if he really was in secret Kumite, will be more realistic than Frank Deux’s experience, whom this story is allegedly based on.
you can say what you want about van damme, but the roundhouse kick at the end is absolutely great. even at 0.25 times the speed, it really hits the spot.
Bolo had all but 3 lines in the whole movie. Only he could pull that off.

This was the first time I'd ever seen May Thai, I didn't even know what the hell it was called. This movie put it on the map. Say what you want about Frank Dux but without him there is no Street Fighter 2 and no UFC. He should get his kudos for that at least.
I'm sure there were many at the time who saw this movie and thought "I would watch the hell out of a mixed martial arts league" like I did. Never would have thought it would actually be a thing many years later.
For the young people who train and fight watching this, this movie essentially introduced the US to leg kicks and it became a thing after this as crazy as that may sound.

I love this scene. You can see at the end where Chong Lee realizes that perhaps Dux won't be as easy of an opponent to take down as he might have thought.

I practice box and Muay Thai. My idol is Van Damme. The more I learn about this stuff, the more I admire Van Damme and dislike Seagal. Kickboxing vs Muay Thai, I think on average Thai is better. Nice movie though
