As far as I know, Logic Pro hasn’t killed GarageBand on desktop, so why would GB be killed on iPad? I think the main reason is that GB is free, and also quite powerful considering. Many people are already crying about paying a subscription for LP on iPad, so it’s not like everyone will be going that way even if they would prefer to use Logic. And because they are different apps, as this video says, many music makers will use both.

I have mix feelings. Yes I’ve been waiting for Logic for iPad just not as a subscription. I rather purchase it just like I did with GarageBand when it was released. I’m old school and still prefer analog over digital anytime. Yet it’s a digital world. Files/projects will end up being garbage if I cancel the subscription and don’t own Logic for Mac. I’d be more satisfied if it had a price tag than a subscription fee. I can keep going on about digital recording vs analog with my conspiracies, but that’s another topic. Again I rather purchase a DAW app rather than pay for a subscription in order to keep a file alive. Thanks for what you do 👍🤘
I hope they retract the subscription model, because i do not ever support subscriptions. But, I suspect Apple will update Garageband to a much more close version of Logic and thereby justify their offer. It would be very Apple-like.
Thanks for making everything clear! Great information and I’m really glad we can use GarageBand still as a sketchpad and then transfer the files to logic pro! It’s a wonderful world.
I have Logic on all my Mac and GarageBand is definitely my favorite because is easy for ideas. Logic in another hand I don’t like subscription think about it. In 4 years you will ending paid what Logic cost $199. No thank you I rather used GarageBand and is my first DAW the I started. With
I would hope not. GarageBand has limitations, but that's not always a bad thing. I'm happy for the folks who are excited about Logic for iPad, but a fair few of them also preach 'you don't need all the gear' and 'use what you have'. I'll continue to do that. What I don’t understand is why they keep focusing on professional level software, and amateur software when I believe the majority of us are musicians first and would greatly benefit from something in between. More than GarageBand, with the ease of use and less complicated than logic. It takes quite some time to learn how to appropriately utilize the features and logic and I have been using it for over five years. I’m a musician, not an audio engineer. That is the appeal of GarageBand to begin with but as you learn more and more you wish for more features then garage band has to offer.
You forgot to mention one thing, Logic Pro for ipad will be subscription based. $4.99 a month subscription fees will turn many users off from sing Logic Pro on ipad.
I was waiting for this! I’ll predict: NO! EDIT: Logic has some huge bother. GarageBand is just fucking easy to use. Hence why I went back to it. My pals master stuff for me. Job done. As ever love the channel.
The only major problem with GB for ipad that caused me to stop using it was the fact that it forces you to normalize your song when you export it. If it didn't do that I would actually have loved using it.
Hi, love your videos. I’m a guitarist and new to home recording - can you please help advise what I’d need interface wise for guitar and mic? I’m using GarageBand now on iPad Pro 12.9” (2018) and have put some music down using the virtual instruments but would like to record vocals and guitar. What would you recommend? Thanks for your help!
I’m sure GB will live on, but I’ll personally be glad to be free of GB’s crippling limitations. Case in point, there’s no justification for my inability to open a stereo track recorded in my iphone as 2 discreet tracks in GB. And I find it far from intuitive when everything is hidden behind layers of skeuomorphism. Cant wait til Logic for iPad is released!
For those who don’t want or need the power of Logic, GB will suffice. Moreover it can still be the gateway drug to Logic should the user have the ambition for more sophistication and refinement. So I don’t personally think Apple will ditch it.
I’m going to get Logic Pro for IPad but I don’t see myself getting rid of Garage band anytime soon, I have a ton of GarageBand songs and ideas over the years, I’ve started many ideas in GB that ended up in Logic Pro for desktop. I’ll just have to see if Logic Pro for IPad actually brings me back to actually using an IPad Daw, I’ve been disappointed in one way or another as far as IPad Daws go, I’m mainly doing the heavy lifting with my MacBook Pro.
Is the release of Logic Pro on subscription model the end of a lot of interest in it? Certainly ended my interest. Doesn't matter what the DAW, if it is on subscription model then it is DO NOT WANT.
Although I have Ableton Live and Reason I still end up using GarageBand for its simplicity. I think Apple with keep GarageBand as a gateway to Logic Pro. GarageBand on iPad may be the reason someone upgrades to Logic Pro and the reason someone upgrades to a Mac.
Unless Logic Pro iOS is completely free it is not going to wipe out GarageBand. I personally am never going to switch to Logic Pro on the pad, or my iMac. I love it!
Hope not. The reason I use Garageband is that Logic is too confusing: it typically offers too many ways to do the same things…always found logic hard to use and Garageband. I just hope that Apple doesn’t take Garageband away….
Simple answer for me. Logic Pro on iPad will be useless because I have Logic Pro x on a Mac and I use GarageBand mobile to map stuff out. I wouldn’t pay a subscription for an app I’d only use to map out Melodie’s or drums when the final mix and master happens on my computer
Agreed that Logic Pro isn't going to kill GB on iOS. Same with FCP vs. iMovie. They each serve a purpose. A wee observation though, did I spy an original iPhone hanging out in the iPad shots? :)
My answer to this question is a simple question - why would they kill GB when it freely advertises the potential of Logic Pro? Answer - they wouldn't. GB will become a 'light' version for the full software.
If you can run iOS LP in "GB" mode (aka lunchbox mode) then why do you need GB? Well, this is where a comprehensive resource allocation/CPU drain v. # of tracks and active/open pi's testing both to the max until latency or crash is in order. GB may be the cleaner quicker code. Dump that into iOS LP if need be. (( Or - ahem, grow a pair and use Logic Pro on a big boy Mac with twin monitors and real surround, and steal an old non monthly rip version of P tools, that way you can apply for a real studio job in the future when your cut n paste beat thing doesn't work out. )) I know, I know...be nice. Logic is iPad only the number of people using iPhones to make music is increasing daily and apparently Logic Pro on iPad *requires* Garageband to be installed, so, there’s that.
