Its been years since i read the books but i think this is Vanyels friend and first lover from the first book singing before he sets a demon on the family that killed his companion (a sentient horse that they are connected to telepathically when they die it basically lobotomizes the mage and if they even wake up they are really messed up) something he was forbidden to do by his teachers (they pretty much told him to get over it and that je could not seek revenge for a companions death) and then he slaughters everyone down to the last child while Vanyel is pretty much just forced to watch this event triggers Vanyels magic gifts but far too late to do anything to save the family or his lover/friend. Can't remmeber if the demon turns on his lover and kills him or if the other heralds finally arrive and put him down but Vanyel sees the whole thing.
@@kimlindner4033 Okay, so that's really close (I just re-read this book so it's fresh in my mind). The actual event's around Vanyel were this: Vanyel's lover Tylendel (herald, Vanyel wasn't a herald *yet*) was linked to a twin who wasn't a herald. The twin was the lord of their familys' lands, and was murdered in a feud with a neighboring lord. Tylendel went mad when his twin died, and his gifts (combo of mage and fetching) destroyed a large grove of trees. When he recovered from that, he got Vanyel to steal a mage book. Tylendel used the book to build a gate to his twin's murderer's manor, where a "celebration" of their victory was taking place. Tylendel summoned a herd of wyrsa (tiger-ish demons) on the entire family. Tylendel's companion came through the gate then, which was still active, repudiated Tylendel, then tried to 1vEveryone the pack of wyrsa. Killed one, then died. About then was when the other heralds arrived and put a stop to this. As soon as they got back to Haven, Tylendel committed suicide then Vanyel got chosen by Yfandes. The sad part about all that was that the other lord had used black magic to kill Tylendel's twin, and the Heralds would have allowed "mental testimony" since Tylendel essentially lived his twins' final moments. That testimony would have allowed the other Heralds to arrest and charge the other lord with murder. But Tylendel had...snapped. And Vanyel didn't know any better at this point. End result: a bunch of civilians dead, massive political incident, one herald trainee and companion dead, Vanyel chosen, and Vanyel nearly dead from magical backlash then trying to commit suicide himself. The events in this song do kinda describe that, if Tylendel's twin is the "companion" referred to in the song. I'm not aware of any other passages in the Valdemar books that match this. Note: In "Brightly Burning" we see an attack on Laven and his companion, and they treated both of those very seriously. If a companion had been attacked and killed, there WOULD BE an investigation and murder charges brought. So a herald wouldn't be told that he couldn't see revenge for a companion's death, just that any actions taken would have to be within the law.
