Built and funded by the Virginia Tech Autonomous Mastery Prototyping (AMP) Lab.
This musical instrument uses a DE0-nano FPGA (Cyclone IV), Custom PCBs, A4988 Stepper Drivers and NEMA-17 Bipolar Stepper Motors to turn MIDI into 8 tracks of 4 volume levels.

That is one of my absolute favorites (likely due to nostalgia) and although I can't speak for the composer I would like to think that when he was creating this work an array of interlinked stepper motors was the instrument he intended it to be played on.

I have been considering doing them. I just discovered that game thanks to Smooth McGroove's post so I will probably work on them in June sometime. (I am moving at the end of the month so I won't be able to record anything until after I take care of that)
