Products aside, I've really wanted to personally thank you for helping me start taking care of my hair properly! 3 months ago I watched your "10 Commandments for being a Wavy Girl", and it completely inspired me! I straightened my hair so often that I thought *maybe* I had type 2A hair, and I should try to bring out the slight waves to help with frizz. Nope! 3 months in, even on damaged hair, it's much closer to 2C, and so much healthier! (I haven't straightened it once, and I'm not going back.) I never even thought about the difference between curlies and wavies until I saw your videos, and it's helped with a lot of self-acceptance regarding my waves. Sorry this is so long-winded! I just really appreciate all your videos, so thank you!
I just met your channel yesterday in a funny way, while I was on Pinterest. And I´ve just watched so many videos already! OMG! I'm completely in love! I'll try these methods, so many things I'm doing in a wrong way, and, of course, not getting results. Thank you for sharing. Even I don't have most of those products in my place, I'll search for equivalents. Thank you!
Really pleased there is a fragrance free option as my scalp is super sensitive. As a result I have been using sensitive skin shampoo and conditioner for the past few years which really does nothing for my hair! I see that Jessicurl do sample sizes so I will definitely be giving their range a try. Thank you!
I'm so glad you said that you return things that don't work for you bc I tend to hold on to them. Now I feel better about going back and returning that product for something more useful
Ok so i know these quick start videos are over a year old however I just found your Channel today and I am so thankful for your quick start guides. You are so detailed and explain so much stuff. I have been looking for days trying to figure out how to start this and have not found any videos that are so detailed but yet so simple to understand until now. So thank you thank you thank you so much for doing these videos and taking the time to explain everything in detail but simplify it so it's easy to understand and follow. You definitely have earned a new subscriber.
Ohmagosh!! I'm so glad I stumbled upon your videos! After having short hair for a few years, I decided to grow it out and embrace my waves. I feel like I've been stumbling through this blindly, not sure which products are best for wavies, techniques, etc.... and then you enter my life😍😂. Seriously, I feel like I have a better feel for what I should try, more confidence in what I've been doing, and just a better understanding in general of my crazy, "mind-of-its-own", mostly wavy, rarely curly, hair. Thank you!
Thank you so much for this video! I just decided to start this method and it’s so overwhelming and this is the first one that makes it simple! I’ve always had straight hair until the birth of my second son and finally decided after 12 years to try and embrace the curls! Thank you for taking the time to put this out there!
Hello! I am a recent subscriber to your channel and follower of CG method.☺ I just want to thank you for your videos as they have been a massive help for me with the CG method! You are doing a great job and I love your videos! 😙❤
I LOVE all these product recommendations, thank you!!! I'm on day 2 of my CG journey and curious.. you said you only use the as I am cowash every 2-3 showers.. what do you use in between? I thought the cowash was supposed to be used every day, with a CG friendly shampoo every 2-3 days.. did I get that backwards? Maybe you could do a video laying out a typical weekly schedule? It would be so helpful to understand all this as a wavy haired beginner!! Just getting confused about when to shampoo/condition/cowash and when not to.. and in what combinations!
Jennifer Shand Hi Jennifer! I actually recommend not even fooling with cowashing until at least 6 months in, if you’re finding you still need more moisture or frizz control. Otherwise, the transition is just that much tougher. I’d recommend a sulfate free shampoo instead (love Deva Delight, Innersense hydrating hairbath and Bounce Curl Clarifying shampoos). And yes, that’s what I use in-between cowashings. :)
Jennifer Shand I agree, I would love to see a weekly break down. I am seeing shampoo, but don’t. cowash but you shouldn’t, add extra conditioner but not to much unless you are dry.... it is getting confusing. I have watched so many videos and I would love to see a weekly schedule for a new CG.
It's confusing because you have to learn how to read your own hair. I talk about cowashing because it's very popular and recommended by MANY people who follow the CG method, but I can't recommend it if you're brand new to CG. Jumping into cowashing will make the transition harder, and it doesn't have to be that way. Have you watched my Curly Girl Quick Start video? I made that specifically for wavies like you who want a roadmap. Let me know what you think.
Thank you for the videos! I have been incredibly frustrated, but the tips you provide on your videos has helped me so much. Many products are so heavy, I have wavy hair, 2a/b hair, thank you for always including wavy hair tips. Love your videos and Instagram posts!
Thank you so much for these videos! I'm a 2B/2C/3A with high po, fine/low density bleached hair new to the curly girl method and find it so useful to see someone just talking through the key steps! As a bit (okay maybe a lot :P) of a perfectionist, I find all of the info about different products and methods and slight variations really overwhelming since I really just want to know what is best for me and start immediately with perfection lmao. Having key steps to follow like you give here and taking it in stages really helps! One thing I'm a little confused about is refreshing between washes and what the general starter method would be for this? A lot of different curlies/wavies give different, often conflicting, recommendations so I have no idea what I should be doing! My hair usually dries out (or loses curl definition, getting straight bits) between washes so I definitely need to use something, but I'm not even sure where to begin never mind finding what works specifically for me. Thanks a lot!
Awesome video! I, too, clarify once a month with the Suave Daily Clarifying Shampoo. That is a must for a fresh start, for sure! When I first started CG, I rotated back and forth between co- wash and sulfate free shampoo every other day to ease myself into the co-washing and I think that helped while my scalp was normalizing. I don’t like the VO5 either....makes my scalp itch like crazy!!
I really enjoy your videos- you have a wealth of knowledge. I’ve only been doing this since April. My biggest issue is stringy curls. I’d love if you could do a video on causes or what you can do to get over this hump.
Alyson you have been my go too help with wavy hair, thanks. Also, thanks for addressing the co washing thing. Some people I have encountered elsewhere are really fundamentalist about this! I personally only use a co wash after a clarifying wash session. Otherwise it’s lo poo 2x a week. I also am a huge fan of Innersense foam! Lasts for days.
Yes, they can definitely be very fundamentalist about it--good way of putting that. Glad you've found a wash cycle that works for you. The Innersense foam is just hands-down amazing!
So so helpful! I can't thank you enough for taking the time to simplify and break down the curly girl method. With so many products it is very overwhelming in the beginning. Also I saw many ladies with super defined ringlets and I wanted to find someone that had wavy ~2B /2C hair like me so I could possibly relate more. I really like your style and the way you communicate. You come across very positive, kind and friendly. Thank you.
Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!! I'm only a few weeks in to the Curly Girl Method but am going to take your advice and wind it back to basics and take it from there. My only complaint is that here (Scotland) we don't have such a fabulous selection of products you guys have in the US. Thanks again!
I always get super excited when I see you have posted a video!!! You have such similar hair to mine and it helps me soooo much. I love my Moptop curling custard. I am thinking that maybe I use too much. Dime size? Hmm. I am also thinking that I don’t clarify enough and maybe that is why my hair is feeling so weighed down. Thank you so much for the help and you are always fun and entertaining.
Awww, I love that! Thank you so much! Warms my heart. ::) I err on the conservative side with custards because they can be heavy, and I really don't have that much hair. Glad this one helped you!
Thanks for great video! I am completely new snd in love already! One thing I cant find - simole step by step description of the process.... could somebody advice me🙏🏻😇?
Mmmmmmmm, apple cider vinegar neither clarifies nor deep conditions. It can definitely guarantee a good hair day, though, because its pH will close your hair cuticle reeeeeally tightly, making your hair feel slippery, soft, healthy and conditioned. It's a trick that doesn't last, but it's a trick that works consistently every time, for the time being! I've used it before, and it's a good, harmless thing to try. Thanks for sharing your tip!
I have a question! What are all the extra products for? Like, why do you need a cream, and a curl enhancer, AND a gel, etc etc? What does each one add or do for your hair? Thanks!
I smiled the whole way through this! You do such a great job. Yay...for my AG Recoil. I STILL compare everything to that one. And KCCC seems to do well on my waves, but I have to try again to be certain. I'm still figuring everything out, but at least have deep conditioning in a good spot. Or so I thought...didn't think to deep condition after clarifying. I would clarify then just do conditioner and whatever routine after that. LOL! One day...ONE DAY, I'll have it together. Getting a curly cut this month also. Hoping we can undo some of the razoring that was done the past 2 cuts before Curly Girl. Keep you posted.
Awww, your'e so sweet. And you have an awful lot of faith in me! I'll give that some thought. Not sure I'm an expert in that area, but I have been challenged to do a makeup routine video, so I'll try to think about how I might incorporate your wish into that. :)
I just wanted to thank you! You are sooo lovely you give an answer to every confused beginners' questions on their minds and you are just lovely haha I have just seen your page and cant stop watching thank you!
It's so good to see you again. As always, you provided a lot a great information., thank you. Your hair looks really good! Wow, it must have been hard to let go of 8 inches of hair but I know that in the long run, your curls and waves will have a better chance of becoming the kind of waves and curls they are meant and want to be. I'm considering doing the same to my hair. I have some straight pieces of hair underneath my curls and waves and know that they need to go. They are part of my hair that I had colored (with ammonia) and blow dried for several years until I started doing the curly girl method (or close to it as possible) about 2 years ago. These pieces of hair look rather healthy but they aren't and they refuse to curl. It's hard for me because I love having long hair but it's also frustrating at the same time because the parts of my hair that have been cut and layered, are curling really nicely and I have a lot of wavy hair too. Sometimes I think my hair is "dysfunctional" and can't make up it's mind. (LOL). I just need to find a stylist who will be able to help me to decide if that part of my hair just won't ever curl or do these pieces need to be finally cut. BTW, have you ever used the "Curls" hair products? I recently started used them and have fallen in love with the Curls Creme Brulee Whipped Curl Creme and the Curls Goddess Curls Gel. What I love about the gel is that it doesn't feel like a gel at all and is very moisturizing. They've worked wonders for my hair and don't leave my hair feel greasy like SheaMoisture products sometimes do for example, if I use too much of the Curl Enhancing Smoothie.
I have seen those Curls products in a few stores and have wondered if they're good. Thanks for letting me know! And no, your hair is not dysfunctional. It's a trait of wavy hair to have different curl patterns. I certainly have a number of straight pieces as well. Just cut them shorter--helps them blend in.
Thanks for the advice. When I get my hair cut next week, I'll ask my stylist to cut those longer pieces a bit shorter in order to blend them in with the rest of my hair. BTW, I also bought the Cantu Moisturizing Curl Activating Cream - it works really well on my hair. It's moisturizing plus it gives me extra volume which is helpful. I just need to make sure to use a leave-in conditioner when I use this product. The only con for me is the scent. It's not bad but just a bit strong so pairing it with a leave-in product helps to tame down the scent and helps to lock in the moisture.
I have a serious product addiction, I've got sooo many products. I can't resist a bargain so I get things that are on offer, in the thought that I'm saving myself money!!
I'm so excited to go down this path. I have been fighting my wavy/curly hair all my life. I've also got greying hair so I don't expect the same results as you younger girls but I'm already seeing a difference in my curls thanks to the suggested routines. My only comment is that the videos gloss over the names of products too fast and I have to keep rewinding the video....(Age plays a factor). Thanks for the info and I'll be tuning in regularly.
Thank you so much for your videos! I have 2c hair, and you are the youtuber with the closest type of hair! I love that you like to keep things simple, so you would only use like 3 products usually, versus the 10 products other youtubers use. I really appreciate that you explain the products, why it's good, this ingredient does this, blah2... I am new to wearing my hair naturally curly (For 26 years I thought my hair was just a frizzy straw mess so I just chemically straightened it!) It is hard to keep up with the 999 products in youtube, thanks for this video! I have 2 questions for you: 1. Is a "curl creme styler" the same as the SheaMoisture curl enhancing smoothie? The curly lady at Sally's said I should stay away from the curl enhancing smoothie as it's too heavy for a type 2? 2. You said you co-wash every 3 washes, and you wash every 2-4 days... What is a "wash"? Just wetting the hair, rubbing the scalp? Or do you also use conditioner?
Thank you for the video. I've been trying to figure out the minimal to get started since money's a little tight right now. When wet my hair looks like either a 2C or 3A, but I always end up brushing it straight so no idea what it'll look like dried.
Just found your website, thank you so much for your great tips. I have been doing my hair Curly on and off, now I’m on but my issue is that the top of my head and back stays pretty flat and the bottom fans out… don’t know how to get a lift in those areas… not sure if it’s the way I style or if it’s the cut.. I did go to a deva stylist for my last cut…
thanks for sharing this!and this hair cut looks good on you!! Fine hair here and I love the DC foam the CJ deep treatement!!Itried the jessicurl deep treatement but did not like it!may be because of the shea butter..
This Curly Girl Quick Start Part 1, 2 and 3 is so so helpful! Thank you so much. I know absolutely nothing about the curly girl method, I'm just starting out. Naturally, I still have so many questions. Do I do the layering every time I wash my hair? How often can I wash my hair? How often should I do the gel cast? Like most East Asians, I have straight, THICK strands. I air dry my hair, and I get a C or an S shape only at the ends. Will the curly girl method still give curls/ waves on hairs like mine? By the way, I'm already not using any hair products with sulfates and silicones, and I don't have any frizziness I used to have. I'm just curious if the curly girl method will give me the waves and curls and texture I always wished I have. Please Alyson, or any knowledgeable person, help me figure things out! :)
It's possible you could have more wave with time than you do now--only time and consistency in avoiding heat-straightening your hair will tell. Squish to condish and using products (like a leave in) that seal moisture in will also make a big difference. You can style your hair any way you want, layering products or not, as often/not often as you want to. Wash your hair whenever you need/want to. Gel casts are not for everyone; I've found the looser the pattern, the less a gel cast makes sense. The only hard and fast rules are basically, don't use products containing silicones (end in -xane, -cone-, and -conol) on the ingredients label, and don't use sulfates (though I choose to use a sulfate shampoo to clarify on a monthly basis. I'm a rebel like that).
I'm starting tonight with this method!! I'm trying to use up some products I already have on hand/want to get products that are easy to find for right now. I'm assuming you've tried the brands Garnier, Herbal Essences, etc for your leave-in treatments and gels/stylers? I've found a few at Walmart or Target in these brands, along with Not Your Mother's, that don't have the no-no products, but am wondering if I should even waste my time :/ Thanks!!
I am 70 years old and my hair which has always been fine but very abundant is thinning. The texture is also now uneven. When hair grays you get a variety of textures. I've looked for videos about curly girl for older women without success. Any advice?
I really need your help. I'm about ready to pull my hair out! I just started my CG journey two weeks ago. I am currently using the Shea Moisture Low Porosity shampoo and conditioner. I also used the Shea Moisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil Masque twice as my deep conditioner. I have tried applying product on damp hair, on soaking wet hair, on hair with a leave-in conditioner and just regular conditioner. Today I used the Eulecence clarifying shampoo and then deep conditioned after that. I applied regular conditioner to wet hair and then applied Kinky Curly custard. I plopped my hair and then diffused it. I took about an hour for it to be dry. Even then it was not completely dry at the roots. After I scrunched it it has weird curls and my hair has frizz all over. Later today I rinsed it all over again and then applied the two different products: As I Am leave-in conditioner and Deva Curl Arc Angel Gel. I applied these using the praying-hands method and then scrunching it in. Again I diffused it. The curl was nicer but I still have frizz all over. Any suggestions? HELP
That's great! Regular haircuts are SO important. I've been guilty of skipping them myself, so I really have to put out the extra effort to follow that rule.
There was a wavy girl Who had a little curl just to the left of her forehead. When she was good she was curly curly good And when she was bad it's not recorded.
Second time watching, and man I just wish I had your insight on how protein, glycerin and other ingredients affect your hair. I have always tried to embrace my waves/curls but not always with the right products. I am only now starting an official CG journey (strictly avoiding heat, as I have long ago cut silicones and sulfates) but I'm having a hard time discerning my hair type and thus what products really work. Trying so hard to avoid product junkyism, too! I'm curious though about how your routine has changed since your cut! It's still a smidgen longer than mine, and mine is still too short to pineapple so I can't figure out how to sleep in the crunch LOL So glad to have found a proud wavy girl finally, after coveting all the curls on RUclips!
You know, it takes a while, but you just 'get it' after a while. I know when my hair doesn't want to clump and looks dry, but deep conditioning doesn't make a difference, it's more than likely too much protein. Basically if my hair is acting 'off,' I just assume buildup, then move forward with clarifying and deep conditioning. Still the same? Do a quick protein treatment. One of those things will usually clear matters up pretty quick! Product junky-ism only lasted for me until I found a groove of products that work for me relatively consistently (I still rotate, though, bc hard water - boo). You can still sleep in the crunch! Get yo' self a silk pillowcase off Amazon, and sleep without a pineapple. I do need to do an updated routine video, but that's really the only thing that has changed. I get better results without the pineapple, and just sleep with my hair spread above my head. Silk pillowcase is key, though! PS - so glad to have you here, too. :)
Thank you for these videos! They are so, so, so helpful. I recently came across the CG method and am just so overwhelmed with how much information there is out there! I am currently using sulfate/paraben/silicone free shampoo and conditioner. I also use a leave-in conditioner and an organic styling gel. However, I feel I may be experiencing build-up. I saw you are recommending Suave Clarifying Shampoo, however what is the difference between that and a regular shampoo??
I loved your video!! Like you said there is too much information. Thanks! Do you cut your hair with a specialist curly hair hairdresser? Do you recommend to cut hair to start the CGM?
Hi there! I'm just entering the world of curly girl method and I've been really enjoying your videos. Thank you for your beginners guide videos they are super helpful! There is one thing that still confuses me and I expect it's super obvious but I'm just unable to wrap my head around it I hope you can maybe shed some light for me! So, if I wash my hair every Wednesday and every Saturday and just refresh in between (I have 2a/2b hair and it's very fine and gets greasy easily). If I want to use a co-wash, at what stage do I do so? If I use a sulphate free shampoo and silicone free conditioner on a Wednesday can I co-wash on a Saturday and do that alternate routine every week? Or will cowashing once a week, when I only wash my hair twice a week, be damaging for my hair? I'm also aware that I don't want to make my hair any greasier than it already is and I expect cowashing might do that? Thank you in advance for your help! Sian x
Here's my easy answer: Don't cowash yet. Save that for later in your journey, if you find your hair still lacks moisture. Like 3-6 months in. Let your scalp acclimate to going sulfate free for a while first. And keep things simple for yourself, too.
@@alysonlupo hi there! Thank you for getting back to me. I shall take your advice and not co-wash for a while whilst my haired gets used to the transition. Would you recommend a leave in conditioner when my hair is very fine and greasy already? Thank you again ☺️
I've recently started the cg method and am bearing through the transition and desire for suds! Your videos are helpful and you are a pleasant, optimistic person! Have you considered cruelty free products? Any you recommend? Thank you!
Roger's wife here. Why are wavy hair girls staying away from products with glycerin? I color my hair on a regular basis. I'm wondering if it will fade my color? Thanks for your videos. Your information has been very helpful.
Not at all! It's a humectant, which draws moisture to or away from your hair, given the weather conditions/dew point. It can create perfect hair in perfect conditions, or frizz in super hot or cold weather. Won't affect your color in any way!
Thank you! That explains whats been happening to my hair lately. I live in a state where the weather changes often. I'm going to try some of the products you have shown on your videos.
Wondering how you feel about Monat hair care? I have a friend that sells it and she is putting the pressure on me to buy it from her. I don't have it in my budget so I'm using what you have suggested because it's way better priced than Monat. Have you ever tried Monat?
I am in love with your videos! Thank you for sharing your knowledge! I am in the dfw area and have not had a hair cut in over a year and a half 😳 I am in need of one but can not find one that I trust enough to cut my super long wavy thin frizzy hair. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks so much!
Thank you so much, neighbor! I’m so happy to get to help you. Girl, you have waited a while to find the right person!! But here she is: Sara Rice, Chad Rookstool Salon. She’s downtown next to the AA Center, and she’s not inexpensive, but trust me-she’s worth the drive and the dollars. And she has super long, wavy mermaid hair to boot. She KNOWS wavy hair. Let me know if you go see her, and be sure to tell her I sent you!
Do you have another video where you talk more about using the Innersense foam? I've been playing with it and really want to like it but can't quite figure it out
So I am confused about the styling methods or steps especially when in winter and summer and when you use a sulfate shampoo, cowash, and clarifying, glycerin and creams and leave in and enhancers 1) use sulfate free shampoo and conditioner, rinse, and squish, use a leave in, then a gel - What would change or be added during the winter and during the summer 2) use clarifying shampoo at least every other week to begin then to once a month, use a deep conditioner , rinse, then use a leave in, and gel - can you use a deep conditioner with the sulfate free shampoo (before and after) - if I follow this wash step what products would be best for winter and summer
I would love recommendations for curl enhances that are not mouse ( i jus never get a good experience with those) Eg maybe custards etc that are not too heavy? or cream-gels? Before the CGM I used to use the Goldwell curl cream which has a hold of 2 but also a good dose of dimethicone
Hi Alyson, Very helpful video. I got a cast from Mop Top but I think I used too much. I purposely didn't use a gel over it to see if I'd get a cast. I'll try again using a dime size amount. Do you emulsify it in your hands and scrunch it in to apply? Thanks. Betsy from IG
Hi Betsy! People use products differently. If using a ton of MopTop custard works for you and you don't need a gel over, then that's fantastic! For me, I would look like a wet mop...no play off the brand name intended. I do emulsify it in my hands (I do this with every product) and then smooth and scrunch it in. I have a demo on how I use it on my channel.
I heard on your mop top video that some people can use it alone. Plus, when I try something new I don't want to use anything else over it so I can see how my hair reacts. I think I used too much, way more than the dime you use, so I'll use less next time. Btw, how would you compare mop top to dipping do girls with curls? Thanks for all you do.
mmrsjrk That’s a great way to try new products - good on you! The DD cream is totally different from the MopTop Custard. The cream helps define curls and add frizz control. The Custard adds curl enhancement and shine. You can definitely use them independently of each other (with a gel on top, for me), or together.
Hi! I love your videos and relate to your personality a lot; thanks for bringing so much fun to the CG experience! I’m new to this whole thing as a wavy but I have bought my first beginning products and I just want to clarify (pun unintended) - when you clarify once a month and follow up with that deep conditioner, you do not follow up after THAT using any of the sulfate/silicone free shampoos and conditioners after that specific wash, correct? They will be used in the next 2-3 weeks of your washes, until you have to clarify+deep condition again, right? Thank you!!!
Thank you so much! And you’ve got it. Yep, no need to do anything but rinse out that deep conditioning treatment. Then style as usual. Save the sulfates for a few weeks later. 👍👍
Hi, thank you so much for all these great videos! I tried to start the CGM recently, but I guess I've been following too much on curly routine rathen than on a wavy routine. So you gönne bring me back in track 😃 may I ask you what porosity your hair is and if it likes protein? Thanks!
Awesome videos! Still trying to find products that really work for me. Just thought I'd mention if the brown mark on your forehead is from having a child I had an old work colleague who had mark for like a year. Used antipodes night cream and within a week it was gone 😲 if it's a birth mark ignore just thought I'd mention as we were so impressed with the cream. Keep up the great videos 🤗
Hmmm, I don't have hair that tangles easily, so I'm not sure how much help I can be here. But to prevent matting/tangling, be sure to sleep with your hair in a pineapple (I have a short video demo on my channel) and sleep on a satin or silk pillowcase. During the day to prevent tangles underneath, you may need to reconsider the fabric of the clothes you're wearing. Instead of a wool coat, a smooth puffy coat may be preferable, for example. I hope that helps you some!
Newbie here 🙋🏻♀️ Thanks for all your videos!!! I love them and I’am learning so much 😂🙌🏻 Do you use conditioner after the clarifying or a deep conditioner?
Always deep condition for 30 min or so after clarifying, and I use the tiniest green-pea sized dot of leave in. No need to use conditioner again after you rinse it out.
Why do you not use a cream in the winter, but you use one in the summer? From someone who has never tried it both ways, it seems like you would need more moisture in the winter so a cream would be beneficial?
SUCH a good question. happy.loofah got it right. The heat in the summer makes the moisture literally evaporate from your hair, whereas the cold in winter does not. Yes, there's less moisture in the air, but the air can only pull that moisture out of your hair if you use glycerin-heavy products. So don't do that. ;) You may find you need to wash more often in winter than summer to replenish water, and make sure you're doing squish to condish to get a bit of water under the hair cuticle, moisturizing it from within, and be sure to deep condition weekly--maybe even biweekly--in winter. You can still use a cream in winter if you like; it may help to lessen static if it's especially dry out. I personally find it weighs my hair down.
real life+curly girl Thanks for explaining that in the comments. I was a little confused. Woman! You had me pausing YT and adding notes to my Hair Diary. Lol Great videos. You explained a whole lot and I appreciated. Bought a clarifying shampoo from Acure (checked ingredients on Curlbot) and bought Ailkay's Dulce lotion for a Curl enhancer. Thank you for your vids!!!!!!😄
Curious: why don't you just use the Deva Curl or Ouidad line of products for wavy hair? I'm new to the method and that's where I began. I also get Ouidad cuts. (Not Deva Cut)
+L Miller I have a penchant for hard to find products. The thrill is in the chase...? 🙈 Also, Ouidad uses silicones in several of their products. I’ve always thought of their products as being more for curly than wavy hair, but maybe that’s not the case anymore.
You were correct about (most of) Ouidad products not being CG friendly. I’m no longer using them. Your hair, shoulder length, is super attractive on you!
So what I'm understanding is I should only wash my hair with a clarifying shampoo once a month and then the rest of the time I should use conditioner for a CO wash?
hi, what are so good foam mousse? I tried the OGX Quenching + Coconut Curls Frizz-Defying Moisture Mousse from the drugstore and i think I'm going in the right direction. But I don't think that product is curly girl approved. I would love to hear your opinion.
+Colleen Dhaene Shea Moisture makes a couple of foams you may like. I believe one of them is part of their Weightless line, with a red label. Best for wavy hair. 👍
So I’m a wavy new to the cg method. And I desperately need a cut. How do I explain to my hair dresser that I follow this method. Do I bring my products with me? I do not use heat on my hair haven’t for over a year. And I only wash once a week and I really don’t want to mess up my wash day. I have thick hair that easy tangles and I have a hard time sticking to the no silicones this is my only weakness to the cg method. That and I don’t use gel as I just started watching you that is most likely why my curls don’t hold. I’m worried that a cut will mess up my progress 🤦♀️
Brittany, unless you're absolutely married to your stylist, I would encourage you to venture out and try a Deva certified stylist. Then you won't have to explain a thing. You can find out if/how many Deva stylists are in your area using the Stylist Finder section of the DevaCurl website.
real life+curly girl thanks I looked but there’s not one within even 6 hours. I live in a small town. I ended up just risking it. I brought all my own products even my diffuser. And she got some advice from a stylist in her salon who actually has curly clients. I got 8 inches cut off and she cut my top layers in a v formation and blunt cut the ends. It turned out great I thought my hair would be past my shoulders but after the cut my hair curled so much it’s barely shoulder length. Not my preference for hair length but my hair grows fast 1/2 a month. I can’t believe how curly it is🤗 thanks for the advice in all of your videos now my hair is shorter I can try new products.
Thanks so much for all your great videos! Do you happen to know of a good curl enhancer and/or volumiser that's available in the UK? (I have pretty similar hair to yours.)
Patricia beat me to it--Boucleme is my favorite UK brand, and their gel is just to die for. I do find it curl enhancing on its own, but because I'm a bit extra, I also like to use a curl enhancer under it. MopTop curly hair custard is a spectacular curl enhancer and I'm pretty sure that's easy to find just about everywhere. Deva's frizz free volumizing foam is also a good one...is that one available in the UK? As I Am also makes a curling jelly I'm staring at a sample of, but haven't yet used, and I know they're an international brand. I wish I knew more about what's available where you are! But seriously, try Boucleme gel on its own first and see how it works for you!
I can't seem to tell the difference between 2 A, 2B, and 2C hair in comparison to what I have. I have a ton of hair but its baby fine with some volume post wash but 2nd day all volume is gone. I am just trying to switch to no sulfates and no silicone but the major problem I am having is an oily scalp on a first glance, but it is so frizzy on day two. I tried a clarifying ACV rinse and masques but to no avail. I am assuming high porosity with a 2b hair type since I color my hair but I was wanting to know if you have seen this happen to anyone else or if anyone knows how to correct this??
I don't believe in ACV rinses as a clarifying treatment. They do a fantastic job of closing the hair cuticle so your hair feels smooth, but I honestly believe you need a good old fashioned heavy sulfate wash to get the gunk off, usually once a month. Especially if you're dealing with hard water, it may be wise to invest in a silicone-free hard water shampoo like Ion, which you can find at Sally's. If you're dealing with an oily scalp. don't even bother with cowashing right now (assuming you are); just use a sulfate free shampoo for the next few months until you want to (if you ever want to) try rotating that in. Your frizz is most likely caused by buildup. So do a sulfate clarifying wash, follow up with a silicone free deep condition, and see how that helps you out!
I just began the curly girl method a month ago. I got the Kinky Curly Come Clean for my clarifying shampoo before I found out I should've gotten a sulfate clarifying shampoo like Suave. Do I need to go get Suave to start over or just stick with Kinky Curly Come Clean?
Ehhhhhhh, I don't really use oils in my routine any longer, but when I did I liked them only at night, so they could absorb overnight. If you like them as part of your styling routine, they belong after your leave in, before cream/gel.
Thanks for this great info! Questions: What purpose is the leave in (L) and do you use a specific "leave in" product or just don't rinse out all of your conditioner? Also, can you explain why you use a cream in the summer but not the rest of the year? I'd imagine that cooler months are more drying to hair so this seems opposite to me but there obviously is something I'm missing :)
Great questions! Okay, so the leave-in really helps to keep my hair hydrated all day. I can't recommend the As I Am leave-in highly enough. Skipping this step, I've found, means a frizzy hair day for me, no matter what other styling products I use. It is truly foundational to the outcome of my hair style. Leaving in my regular conditioner leaves my hair greasy and heavy. And re using a cream in winter vs summer: The heat in the summer makes the moisture literally evaporate from your hair, whereas the cold in winter does not. Yes, there's less moisture in the cold air, but the air can only pull that moisture out of your hair if you use glycerin-heavy products. I personally find it weighs my hair down in winter, but doesn't in summer. I hope that all makes sense! And these are MY personal experiences, so if they don't work for your hair in your environment, don't sweat it! Just do what works for you.
Do you feel like you need a gel following a curl enhancer? I hate the crunch of a gel and thought I loved the DC Light gel but it made my hair brittle which someone said was too much protein...
I always use a gel on top. When I don't, I end up with loose, limp waves by end of the day. Every gel is different. I've never used LDG, but I've used UDG and wasn't necessarily a fan. If you hate crunch, try something like Jessicurl Spiralicious or Confident Coils, Raw Curls medium or firm hold gel, or Boucleme gel. Not much crunch to scrunch out, but great hold from all of those.
That might work just fine. Just make sure it's silicone free. If you notice your hair is collecting buildup after that, you may want to try something more stripping.
Ok, so I'm 3 days in, but I've been using sulfate free shampoos and silicone free conditioners for over a year now. Do you know anything about transitioning to CG after sulfate free? Is it really going to take a year for my hair to look good? Trying to be patient over here D:
For you, I think it's really just going to be about techniques and adding in a few things you weren't doing before. Squish to condish, regular deep conditioning, infrequent clarifying, and maybe mastering clipping your roots and diffusing if that's important to your 'look.' If you weren't using a leave-in conditioner and gel before, that might be an important next step for sealing in moisture and keeping your waves/curls from falling out.
Hi Alyson in one of your videos you spoke of deep conditioning with Sally’s GVP conditioning balm and adding oils to it. But I can’t find the recipe anywhere?
No recipe needed - just add a squirt of honey and a drizzle a little evoo into a little bowl with some of your fave rinse-out conditioner. GVP or otherwise.
Curly haircut question: in another video you said to go to the stylist with you hair styled the way you wear it so she can see how the curls naturally fall. Do you recommend cut day to also be a washday (or even a deep condition day) or is it okay for it to be after a refresh? I will soon be getting my first wavy haircut and I’m trying to plan my hair care leading up to it (I have young kids and time is precious).
Washday is really the best, but second day-refreshed hair isn't a dealbreaker. For me, personally, I wouldn't go past that. And I know what you mean about the precious time thing!!!
I chopped my hair. This was my first cut in nearly a year. I started following the CGM about 6 weeks ago. My hair was down to my mid-back and now it’s to my collar bone with lots of layers. I cannot underestimate how awesome it is to decrease the dry time. Before, it took almost all day to air dry and about an hour to diffuse. Now, my hair almost dried while I did my makeup and I only had to diffuse it for about 10 minutes. Long bouncing curls are beautiful, but for a time-sensitive life, you can’t beat the convenience of shorter hair. I’ve always had hair that was shoulder-length or longer. Maybe I’ll consider a long bob in the future.
Hi thanks for all the videos! this is a question about “cocktailing” I guess you would say. I am a wavy and getting ready to jump into the CG world. Does it make sense to use Deva foam and Deva ultra gel together? Or would that be redundant? Thanks!
Hello! I love your videos, you seem to have a hair type really close to mine! But I do have one problem. The hair at the back of my head never seem to curl, it is straight and just clings to my scull basically. Do you have any tips? My first though was build up, but I have a sulphate free shampoo that says it removes build up. Could it be that anyway?
I could be buildup, sure, but more likely it's just that you have a different curl pattern at the back of your head. I certainly have the same experience. Have you tried the smasters method on just that area? Or clipping your roots in that area so they dry away from your scalp? Those would be my go-to's. Also, I personally don't believe sulfate-free clarifying shampoos are all that effective, at least in my experience. When I find one that is, I'll certainly be sharing it!
Raw Curls, I believe. Their customer service is terrible, so I really don't recommend them anymore. Bounce Curl, MopTop, Innersense, and DevaCurl are my shampoo go-to's at this point.
I actually JUST picked it up last weekend, so I'll be reporting back once I get to experiment with it a bit, and learn more about how it actually works (it's a bond builder, not a protein treatment). That should be this week in cos school! Soooo excited!
I would not recommend it. See if you can get away with a sulfate free clarifying shampoo, like As I Am Curl Clarity or Kinky Curly Come Clean, and maybe use it slightly more often, depending on how prone your hair is to buildup. You might also look for a color-safe shampoo that's silicone free.
It’s embarrassing how much I spend on diva curl products last week.... to no avail- not happy with these results; I need a good cast gel. Eeks I’m cowashing... I just need help. Lol
When you say ‘curl enhancer’, do you use those like you would the Climate Control you have used, or like the Deva Curl gels, because using only a dime size of the products you mentioned wouldn’t be enough to create a cast for my hair (which is about your length, and wavy as well), even a light one. Do you use a gel along with the curl enhancers?
You've got it exactly right. I use them like a spice! Just a little usually goes a long way to enhance/shrink curls; it's the gel on top that lends the staying power.
I’m a wavy and I sometimes feel ridiculous saying I have curly hair, especially because I’m just starting the cg routine and my hair around my crown is so flat and dead. I know the curls/waves will come back with using different products and techniques, but I feel intimidated calling myself a ‘curly girl’ compared to the beautiful kinky/coily girls out there
Products aside, I've really wanted to personally thank you for helping me start taking care of my hair properly!
Oh my gosh, you actually made me just well up! Good heavens, you are so welcome. I couldn't be happier for you!
Couldn't agree more with this statement!!!
I'm trying so hard to follow along! I am totally a newbie and trying not to be overwhelmed. Thank you so much for your videos!
Thank you!
I'd love updates on your fave products, there are new things being released every day.
Awwwww you are so kind! Glad this clarified things for you.
Awwwww you're welcome! Good luck!
Hello! I am a recent subscriber to your channel and follower of CG method.☺ I just want to thank you for your videos as they have been a massive help for me with the CG method! You are doing a great job and I love your videos! 😙❤
I am so overwhelmed.

I LOVE the Deva Curl Buildup Buster. I feel like I can use it a couple times a week.
Wow, THAT gentle?? Noted!
Good for you, Belinda! That was a good way to start. But you're analytical that way, so I am not surprised you thought of that from the get-go! ;)
You’re so sweet! Thanks, doll! 😘
Wow, your shorter haircut looks amazing on you!! Thank you for all the valuable info, its helps to break all this confusing stuff down.
Thank you so much. And you are so welcome! Glad it was helpful.
I really enjoy your videos- you have a wealth of knowledge. I’ve only been doing this since April. My biggest issue is stringy curls. I’d love if you could do a video on causes or what you can do to get over this hump.
Always helpful to me as just starting the journey. I get so confused by all the products.
So glad to help you!
I’m so enjoying your videos. I do have hair curlier than yours, but your tips and knowledge applies the same of course. Thanks so much 😊
Thanks. I have the same hair texture as you.
Thank you.
Thank you so much, Bertha! I can't even tell you how much your comments mean. I'm thrilled to help you!
As I Am is one of my favorite lines, and I believe it's pretty easy to find internationally!
You can use apple cidre vinegar to deep clarify too..
Vow! I love your videos. I am starting with the cgm and your videos helped so much! Thank you! 💖🐩
Aw, thanks so much! I'm so glad!
Oh, I'm so excited to hear about your cut! Fingers crossed it goes well!!! And yes, when in doubt, always deep condition! ;)
I’m loving Jessicurl Deep Conditioner! Just used it today under the Hot Head heat cap.
It's SO GREAT!
i know i'm completely off topic but it would be so nice if you did some videos about skin care too, it's just so interesting how you explain things
Thank you so much, Cansu! I try. Just want to help all the wavies out there. It's such a struggle in the beginning!
It's not bad but just a bit strong so pairing it with a leave-in product helps to tame down the scent and helps to lock in the moisture.
trueosmondfan Good to know. I keep thinking about that one, but the Shea butter....hmmm.... Good luck with your cut! Hope it goes well!!
Thank you. I'll let you know what happens. I'm going to see someone that the Deva Curl Website has listed.
Glad to have you here! Have you read Lorraine Massey's new Silver Curls handbook? Might be a great read for you!
I am new to wearing my hair naturally curly (For 26 years I thought my hair was just a frizzy straw mess so I just chemically straightened it!)
It is hard to keep up with the 999 products in youtube, thanks for this video! I have 2 questions for you:
Darn you Alyson- you’re making shop again!! 😂 My picture is hanging somewhere along with you after returning products! Keep up the great videos.
+Claudia L 😂😂😂 great minds...!
I have just found you and my hair really looks scruffy all the time but hopefully now, I can have decent looking waves with your help 😁
thanks for sharing this!and this hair cut looks good on you!! Fine hair here and I love the DC foam the CJ deep treatement!!Itried the jessicurl deep treatement but did not like it!may be because of the shea butter..
Hi Mel! Glad you liked those two, but sorry you didn't like the Jessicurl deep conditioner. Maybe try it just on your ends, and not at your roots?
Wow thank you so much for your thoughtful reply. This is so helpful. Thank you thank you 💜💜💜
By the way, forgot to mention that I discovered your channel through Jenn Rogers! Hope to see more of your videos! :)
Thank you!
You're so welcome!
Do you know a good way to test for porosity? Has that affected your routine and what products you use?
I am 70 years old and my hair which has always been fine but very abundant is thinning. The texture is also now uneven. When hair grays you get a variety of textures. I've looked for videos about curly girl for older women without success. Any advice?
I’d look to Facebook. I believe there are a few naturally gray/going gray groups out there that may be of tremendous help to you.
HELP
I follow most of what the CG method says. I keep my hair pretty short, so I don’t have a lot of split ends or older, drier hair.
That's great! Regular haircuts are SO important. I've been guilty of skipping them myself, so I really have to put out the extra effort to follow that rule.
There was a wavy girl
Who had a little curl
just to the left of her forehead.
When she was good
she was curly curly good
And when she was bad
it's not recorded.
LOL!!!! I'm neither confirming nor denying any of this!
Sharvo Sharvo this is hilarious!!!!!! :) ;)
real life+curly girl spoken like a true professional!
Maria R Don’t encourage her!!! LOL
Sharvo Sharvo I’m sure I have no idea what you’re taking about. 🤐
It's still a smidgen longer than mine, and mine is still too short to pineapple so I can't figure out how to sleep in the crunch LOL
So glad to have found a proud wavy girl finally, after coveting all the curls on RUclips!
There is one thing that still confuses me and I expect it's super obvious but I'm just unable to wrap my head around it
I hope you can maybe shed some light for me!
I’m curious about low poo options. I can’t seem to find a link to your favs.
I've been playing with it and really want to like it but can't quite figure it out
So I am confused about the styling methods or steps especially when in winter and summer and when you use a sulfate shampoo, cowash, and clarifying, glycerin and creams and leave in and enhancers
1) use sulfate free shampoo and conditioner, rinse, and squish, use a leave in, then a gel
- What would change or be added during the winter and during the summer
2) use clarifying shampoo at least every other week to begin then to once a month, use a deep conditioner , rinse, then use a leave in, and gel
- can you use a deep conditioner with the sulfate free shampoo (before and after)
- if I follow this wash step what products would be best for winter and summer
Nope, been there my whole life! But thank you for looking out for me. You're very thoughtful!
Just starting my wavy hair journey & am seeing improvements already! 🙌🏻 I am not sure how to deal with the underside of my hair matting tho 😣 help?
Hmmm, I don't have hair that tangles easily, so I'm not sure how much help I can be here. But to prevent matting/tangling, be sure to sleep with your hair in a pineapple (I have a short video demo on my channel) and sleep on a satin or silk pillowcase. During the day to prevent tangles underneath, you may need to reconsider the fabric of the clothes you're wearing. Instead of a wool coat, a smooth puffy coat may be preferable, for example. I hope that helps you some!
Newbie here 🙋🏻♀️
Thanks for all your videos!!! I love them and I’am learning so much 😂🙌🏻
Do you use conditioner after the clarifying or a deep conditioner?
Always deep condition for 30 min or so after clarifying, and I use the tiniest green-pea sized dot of leave in. No need to use conditioner again after you rinse it out.
What do you think about using apple cider vinegar as a clarifying?
Why do you not use a cream in the winter, but you use one in the summer? From someone who has never tried it both ways, it seems like you would need more moisture in the winter so a cream would be beneficial?
goldfish390 Heat in the summer dries out hair more than cold winter air
I never would have thought because It's much more humid in the summer and dry in the winter!
What about Pyhto and Ola[ex? bought them both ugh
What is your favorite go to gel to use over your curl enhancer?
* that are affordable.
(I have pretty similar hair to yours.)
fractal.kat I have heard Alyson recommend Boucleme before - @curlysue on IG really loves this line!
You are so right!! It's a great one!
I also work out every single day so I am struggling to figure out a good hair wash schedule that will work with this method.
Where does an oil fit into a routine? I have argon/Jojoba mix I like but do I put it before or after the gel?
Ehhhhhhh, I don't really use oils in my routine any longer, but when I did I liked them only at night, so they could absorb overnight. If you like them as part of your styling routine, they belong after your leave in, before cream/gel.
I’m just starting my hair journey and I was wondering if you still use a normal conditioner after a cowash?
I personally find it weighs my hair down in winter, but doesn't in summer. I hope that all makes sense! And these are MY personal experiences, so if they don't work for your hair in your environment, don't sweat it! Just do what works for you.
Is the mane choice curly girl approved? I cant absolutely give up shampoos lol bit I know their shampoos have none of the had stiff in
Do you recommend using the clarifying shampoo every time we wash our hair? And when we use it to clarify, do we also use our regular shampoo after?
No, not every time! Do it every few weeks (I believe she does it once a month) to get rid of product build-up.
Can I use a clarifying rinse such as Live Clean's apple cider rinse, or does it have to be a clarifying shampoo?
Happy holidays and I hope you do well in cosmetology school.
Hi thanks for all the videos! this is a question about “cocktailing” I guess you would say. I am a wavy and getting ready to jump into the CG world.
Does it make sense to use Deva foam and Deva ultra gel together? Or would that be redundant?
Thanks!
That totally makes sense. Although I would apply them in layers, and not mix them together in your hands. Make sense?
Foam first, gel last. But definitely experiment!
What is the name of the sulfate free shampoo in the green and white bottle?
Raw Curls, I believe. Their customer service is terrible, so I really don't recommend them anymore. Bounce Curl, MopTop, Innersense, and DevaCurl are my shampoo go-to's at this point.
Do you deep condition after low poo...or just after clarifying?
Do you use Olaplex 3? Do you use protein treatments? Do you have any opinions on it?
I actually JUST picked it up last weekend, so I'll be reporting back once I get to experiment with it a bit, and learn more about how it actually works (it's a bond builder, not a protein treatment). That should be this week in cos school! Soooo excited!
I spend a lot of money frantically covering up my grays. Can I use that clarifying shampoo over my hair color? I'm actually afraid to try that.
Cheryl Anne I use a clarifying shampoo a day before I get it colored so don’t worry about stripping my expensive color through clarifying.
Hey Alyson, this is Heidi (@goldiwaves) on IG. I would totally recommend the dippity-do mousse! It's a curl enhancer for me. : D
Also, I get super excited when I see that you posted a new video! 😆😆😆 Regardless of what it is. 😁
I just used this product today for the first time and I noticed more definition , and fullness. Love it!
It's pretty great!
Well that just makes my day to know it's that good! I will pick it up if I see it at TJ Maxx next time!!! Thank you, Heidi!
I'm so glad! Hope you love it!!!
Thanks for all your effort, but the CGM needs waaaayyy too much products for my personal taste. I'm not sure if I'm ready for that 😂🙈
Hey, you might want to check out her Quest For Simplicity video. I found it helpful, for this issue. ☺
@@mysterylovescompany2657
Thanks 😊
I'll look at that
I’m a wavy and I sometimes feel ridiculous saying I have curly hair, especially because I’m just starting the cg routine and my hair around my crown is so flat and dead. I know the curls/waves will come back with using different products and techniques, but I feel intimidated calling myself a ‘curly girl’ compared to the beautiful kinky/coily girls out there
