You gave 110% to try to save the little one. Don't beat yourself up. You did your best like you always do. Raising animals is an adventure no matter what they are. We have raised rabbits, chickens, hogs and steers. We've had them do well and had to make decisions when things went wrong. Goes with the territory. You guys are wonderful with your animals. Take care and hope you have better day tomorrow.
    God bless!

It's amazing to see how incredibly strong the maternal instincts are with this cow, considering how young she is, this being her first calving, she was NOT willing to let her baby out of her sight. So sad he didn't survive but this is life out on the range.

Yes, I've too appreciated the respect you give each other. In a world that sometimes seems upside down crazy, there is love & respect on your ranch. You risk your neck, to give all you can find inside you, to help your animals. These are dangerous situations sometimes, & you still understand & respect their right to be anxious & nasty. You are great caretakers of them all. I'm intimidated by their size personally, but I'm so impressed by your spirit of, "I'm responsible for these guys...& all the babies!" Good on you guys! This loss is very hard to reconcile, but your efforts are not a loss!❤

I grew up on a farm in Eastern Ks. One of our neighbors raised bison. My dad would help out at their ranch sometimes. They had a calf that was born sickly and they told my brothers if they could keep it alive, they could keep it. My brothers, being only about 10-13 y/o, stayed in our barn with that calf, through the night. Unfortunately it died early that morning. My sister and I were only about 6-7 years old and I think we were as heartbroken as my brothers were.

i have had the same thoughts about carrying an emergency kit & supplies.along with you. i was a visiting nurse and carried IV medicnes in a cooler in the car as i made my rounds of home visits. IDK how that would work with colostrum, Does it come in a dried form, or. concentrate that is ‘shelf stable”? Even just having IV fluid to hydrate a calf, could make a difference when time is.of the essence. I marvel at the mysterious force of Providence that brought you,Marissa and your friends together in 2 vehicles @ the place and time to rescue the the little Red Dog . I am so sorry that baby did not survive. perhaps there was something else wrong with the baby, in addition to the heat, that it couldn’t stand up to get the vital colostrum. perhaps a birth injury, or prolonged diffcult labor? It has been a special learning experience us watching. Dusty, you have had a such a difficult summer. it would seem that you have been “in training” to acquire advanced skills, “Doctoring” the Wild Bison. Maybe you are being “called” to to go forward to become a Veterinarian. You could practice into you elder years, teaching and directing the younger generations of Bison ranchers. The fluids get absorbed through the tissue vs needing a vein, that's why I suggested it. I'm in no way suggesting one starts an IV in the middle of raging bison. It's stick and flow, a litre goes in and stops dehydration. While en route to getting colostrum in the mouth. Sigh but, believe what you want.

Yes I hydration. Stick it in just under skin back of neck it will make a fluid bump and get absorbed . Now horse people they have a time frame list of certain things that need to happen in a certain amount of time. Afterbirth leaving the mom, baby standing on it's legs in a certain time frame, baby finding and latching on and actually getting suction etc is there maybe talking to the doc you could come up with a bison time frame checklist of certain things to help you

So sorry for the three losses this summer.
One thing I know for sure, all of you have the heart for what you do. Thank you for helping to save an amazing animal. Your awesome!!
Found your channel June/July. I’ve been feast on bison videos. Enjoying learning all about the process. I’m not dumb enough to think I could ever approach one of those animals, especially a mama.
Thank you and keep the videos coming.

I only recently came across your site, but, now watch as much as possible. As heart breaking this was, there had to be a reason. Like you said Mom was young and the heat is so hard on these animals. You tried and that is what counts. It shows how much you care for these bison. Raising animals that are not tame is a difficult task. You can't get hands on like other farm animals. Don't apologize for showing your feelings, we are right there with you, shedding tears and feeling sad also. I feel I'm an extension of your family, albeit distant, and am on the journey with you and your immediate family. May God bless you all and we'll keep praying for rain. It saddened me to see the loss, but you did all you could. I never experienced Bison until I went to Custer State Park. I was an aww of how massive these animals are. We followed the rules, stayed in our truck, and kept our distance. One old bull decided to walk down the middle of the road and coming toward us. We stopped and allowed him to pass. So amazing!!

You and Marissa have been doing a wonderful job of rolling with the punches this season has brought you. That cow did her best to be a good mama. A huge shout out to your guests who jumped right in and helped in an emergency. Being bone dry like he was, he'd been there for a while in the building heat. God bless you folks.
