Often overlooked or even ignored is the fact that Chot Reyes resigned only as Gilas coach but not as Program Director of SBP's Basketball program.

Is it really an SMC vs MPIC issue? It's the dellusion of the PBA that the country was still a top 3 Asian country in 2007 when it was the newly-formed SBP's first Asian-level competition using PBA players. That team had better talent than Iran, but lost on the sidelines when Chot got a tech during a 1-possession game. They had no answer for Jordan and Rashiem Wright, and they only beat the China - C team because Yao Ming and the A & B teams were in Europe preparing for the Olympics as hosts. They also want people to forget about the 2009 Jones Cup because those who saw it knew the obvious: talent alone doesn't win games. It also didn't help the PBA when Gilas 1 with Toroman and a bunch of semi-pros from college wiped the floor against a PBA All-Star selection in an exhibition. The bigger issue was never about who ran the program, it's just the inability to accept that the PBA is an inferior level of Asian basketball for at least 15 years. At least we have some players like Ramos, Sotto, Abando, and Edu who have no idea what it's like to be in the PBA. We're not winning games without an NBA-level player like Clarkson (or Blatche before) having big games.

We previously got Serbian Coach Toroman and New Zealand-American Coach Tab Baldwin and still we can't win the Asian Games which the Philippines last won in 1962. The concept of a team solely built to compete in international competitions like SMC's Northern Consolidated Cement or NCC in the early 1980's is a good one as chemistry and familiarity of players as well as adeptness with the Head Coach's system is mastered, resulting in fluidity of play. But to do that again will come at a heavy price to the financing conglomerate as there will be a lot of idle times in between international games - the Olympics come every 4 years on year divisible by 4 (2016, 2020, 2024, etc.), FIBA Asia and World Cup every 4 years (2014, 2018, 2022 but moved to 2023 due to the pandemic, 2026, etc.,) and Asian Games (not FIBA sanctioned, thus has no bearing in qualifying to the FIBA World Cup and Olympics). No country in the world, Industrialised, Newly Industrialized and even Third World countries have built and maintained a team solely to compete in international tournaments. What the Euroleague, NBA teams and African teams did were to wind down their tournaments early, say 2-3 months before the international tournament so as to give them adequate time to build a strong, cohesive and well-oiled teams that can compete at the highest level.
