I had the great good fortune to hear/see [Heresy? No!] Young Neil several years ago on the Sacred Seeds tour. He started the concert with a solo unplugged set. After an intermission, he returned with Promise of the Real, fronted by Lucas and Micah Nelson, the sons of Willie. As one would expect, they could play the country rock songs with aplomb, but could also go full tilt Crazy Horse when called upon to do so. During the electric set, Neil mostly played a Gibson Les Paul, but he brought out the Gretsch White Falcon for a few songs. It was definitely a top 5 concert and I'm an old far..., ehr, dude with many great shows under my belt, including CSNY. -- ✌👤
The guitar sound is brilliant. It’s a unique guitar experience from the first second, with the octave-apart two-string intro. I thought it was an effects pedal, the later found he did it himself…
A music reviewer back in the day rated Neil highly as a guitar player, saying "There is no space between what he plays and what he feels." That's about all that needs to be said.☮💜
50 years later and that song is as fresh is the first day I listened to it. Every guitar note and nuance is etched into my brain in the best way possible.
I'd recommend his song "Pocahontas". Really beautiful lyrics, another personal song with a wistful air, great melody. Not as well known as his anthems, but a great example of his lyrical songwriting style.
This song is an example of why I love Neil Young. His guitar solos, if you compare him to some other great guitarists, might be criticized as being a bit off, tonally, or sloppy, but I would disagree. I lost count of the number of times I’ve seen him, and this example demonstrates why. It’s the raw emotion that pours through his fingers, through the guitar strings and amplifier, out the speakers, and into our hearts. His guitar work just blows me away. And I could see that it was connecting with you the same way. This was kind of a short version of this song. The best version I’ve ever heard was on his tour with his band, Crazy Horse, in 1996, I think. He is such a great songwriter and genius musician. And I love his voice. It is perfect for his music!
Wife here. I’m laughing didn’t know he was capable of this ! Oh you are both in for an adventure . I remember my very first time hearing him I was twelve had radio on in my brother’s room across the hall. I ran in and was who is THIS??? Became a die hard fan of his work. Next tour will be my 12th Neil concert. I could list soooo many songs to listen to but I’ll just give you a sample few. Piwderfinger, My My Hey Hey, Cowgirl in the Sand, Old Man, Sugar Mountain, Down by the The River. After the Goldrush, Cortez The Killer I once was so deep into that one while driving as a teen I got lost ! Many more enjoy ….
Yes! Neil is a mad shredder when he wants to be. Like others have pointed out, Rockin’ in the Free World has devastating lyrics and shredding to match! Go back to his beginnings: Neil Young -1969 What Did You Do To My Life or Mr. Soul with Buffalo Springfield. Of course there’s Southern Man from After The Goldrush album. It’s perfection. Enjoyed watching Sam just rockin’ out, but also enjoyed seeing your raised eyebrows reaction when Neil as off key, as he was a lot.
I would never call Neil Young a shredder, but his guitar makes sounds that aren't available to regular people. Probably my favourite by him, although Cowgirl in the Sand and Cortez the Killer are also great.
@@BulaBulaBula-ms4iy Saw it live several times with Neal, solo, Crazy Horse & CSNY, so yeah, I'm familiar with it, not a modern listener but an old Hippie.
Hi guys, I tend to like Neils music late 70's and early 80's Everything with the band Crazy Horse with him.. Like Rust Never Sleeps.. My favorite song off the album is "Powder Finger" "Look Out Mama There's a White Boat Coming up the River" Lol See Love that song. This song has Crazy Horse playing with him it's a Great Song.
I saw him live in the eighties, he played an entire show, then when everyone thought the show was over he came out with a whole new band called Neal and the Shocking Pinks, and they played a whole set of like fifties rock and roll music, there must have been six or seven encores, second longest concert I've ever seen, really it was two full and independent shows in one night, with different outfits.
From my college days with his, After the Goldrush album. to his latest August Moon I have followed Neil, I recognize and appreciate his gift we get to witness.
"Enigmatic" is an apt description of Neil Young and his body of work over his career. This is my favorite Neil Young song, and the one I enjoy playing for those familiar only NY's acoustic and Country side.
Great reaction, guys! I LOVE Neil Young, but he's not for everyone. I don't remember who said it, but the quote was "He doesn't have much of a voice, but he sure can sing".... you either get it or you don't. His guitar playing is top notch, and he is one of those artists that was constantly changing the style of music that he was playing. A truly fantastic musician.
Two of the greatest guitar solos in rock history - in the same song. One more thing - good call to review this, delighted to see it, in fact first time I’ve ever seen Hurricane reviewed…
I`ve seen Neil 7 times from 1972 - 2004 both as an acoustic solo & with his band Crazy Horse. If you have ever seen him play you will see straight off that he really loves his audiences & gives it his all for every performance. He is a true master as a songwriter & as a live performer.
That's why he is called the ,"grandfather of grunge". The grittyness of the composition. Not sure what other Neil Young songs you reacted already but checkout " Rockin' In The Free World". Thanks.😊
In the early 90’s I saw him in Minneapolis in the fall with Crazy Horse and the next spring or maybe the following as an unplugged solo. As a solo he plaid this song on the pipe organ. Quite a difference in tone and pace but equally stunning!
Neil could certainly shred in his own unique way going back to his Buffalo Springfield days. And he wasn't afraid to crank up the volume. His shredding prowess was overshadowed by his brooding persona and his beautiful and difficult songs of personal alienation and his inability to find love. So most people don't think of him as a guitar god even though he was. Good catch re: the lack of "cleaning up" the production. A lot of his songs were like that. It was his way of saying "It is what it is, take it or leave it."
Fun fact about Neil Young. When he was first starting out int he early 1960's he was in a band with and a roommate of Rick "Superfreak" James in Buffalo, N.Y.. The band was called The Mynah Birds.
My favourite Neil Young song. The extended version from the live album Weld is fantastic. The first time I saw him live he did two sets. The first set, solo, acoustic. Brilliant. The second set, electric, with the band. Sublime. Boy did he rock.
One thing that makes it sound interesting is although he does play at Gibson, Les Paul… he plays a model with single coil P90 pickups, which is kind of rare. David Gilmour, who is known for playing a Strat with single coil pickups also uses P90 whenever he plays a Gibson
I’ve seen Neil many times, and my favorite times have been when he’s with Crazy Horse. He loves playing with those guys, and it becomes a 2+ hour jam session.
There are only a few musicians who are immediately recognizable - Neil is one of those. Either electric or acoustic, I can pick him out any time. Great player!
This is a suggestion for the experience for this song. Turn off all lights. Lean back in your chair, close your eyes and crank up the volume. A true experience for a great song.
I've said it before and I'll say it forever. Neil has so many styles and tempos that if you are in a mood and want to stay there he has a few songs,,, if you're in a mood and want out he has a few songs... if you're in a genre and want to be there he has songs if you want a different genre he has it....Rock, Country, Country Rock , Folk , Blues., Motown, Surfer , Caifornia rock, Punk....he's played them all. Thank you for the great reaction....side note this song he was criticized for his one note solo... his response.. if you really listen each same note sounds different
There are so many recorded versions of Like a Hurricane. Each one is a new adventure by Neil. I think I like best Like a Hurricane from Live Rust Concert Album. The whole electric set of this concert is so good.
I would also suggest Crosby, Still, Nash, and Young “Four Way Street” album Southern Man. It is mostly an exploration of the tune Southern Man. It did not fail to catch and keep my over the years.
A song that sits in my all time top 5 of all time and could play this 10 times a day and never get bored of it, all I can say is next stop the live version on “Live Rust” 😊

I've seen where Neil and Steven Stills would go on epic dueling solos when playing Wooden Ships in concert. I wish I could have seen that. For early Neil, Buffalo Springfield's Mr. Soul is great.
You cant't go wrong with Neil Young, very few(if any) wrote so many great songs than him. If you want to hear an absolutely classic electric guitar songs from him, listen to "Down By The River", you'll be blown away!
Neil is a very unique guitar player with a very unique guitar. His primary electric guitar is named Old Black and is such a unique combination of parts and modifications that it has its own Wikipedia entry. The guitar has been modified so much from the original Les Paul design that it has a completely unique sound.
This is the first Neil young song I heard, after this I went out and bought after the gold rush. I was surprised at how different they were, but that's Neil young for you, always interesting.
If u really wanna check out a monster of rock song from Neil. Rocking in the Free World is what u need to give a go. Neil can rock with the best of them.
Neal Young, when he is with Crazy Horse, is in total Jam Rock mode but still brings his amazing song writing talents to one of the best backing bands ever for this kind of music, they, and electric Hot Tuna were unreal in the old days, playing for 3+ hours, with jams going 20+ minutes in musicianship that does not exist in this century. They vaporize everyone in this century for muscular jamming, I look forward to you checking out Neal & the Horse at the live Weld Tour, around 1990 or so, do Cinnamon Girl, it might be his best ending of that classic hit ever, amazing guitar solo and the band is fire.🔥 For Hot Tuna, an offshoot of the Jefferson Airplane, do Funky #7 Live it is an incredible groove and hard rocking jam, it often had an amazing crescendo ending. Enjoy! 🔥🎵🎸🎤🎸🎶🔥
I think this is one of his most popular songs. For another song in a somewhat similar style, try “Cortez the Killer”, as others have already suggested.
Crazy Horse is like his muse. He will go off and do different projects, solo, acoustic, etc. But he always comes back to Crazy Horse. They do some epic jams.

Grandfather of Grunge. He has a peculiar way of tuning his guitar and always sounds a little diferent. His live shows can be quite hard at times. Te last time I saw him, he opened with Hey, Hey My, My. Take a listen to the official live video.
Neil is also referred to as the "Grandfather of Grunge." Not bad for someone who is also compared to Bob Dylan as a folksinger. He's just a Hell of a talented man.
"... Grandfather of Grunge.... " lookup Carry On Wembley Stadium 1974. C,S,N,Y. Neil introduces "Grunge". On RUclips... kick ass jam... Stephen and Neil.
When I first heard this, I thought "Well, someone's been listening to Coltrane..." thinking particularly of the 1963 European tour "Bye Bye Blackbird." Later I read in Jimmy McDonough's Young biography Shakey that when Young was learning to play electric solos, he was listening intensively to Coltrane (and tried but failed to interest C, S, and N in his music--although C said later he'd had a traumatic psychedelic experience at a JC concert). Some skittery phrasing here reminds me of Roger McGuinn, another Coltrane enthusiast. Enjoyed your reaction--always interesting to see people discovering Neil Young.
Consider doing a double song video of Neil Young that will give a better understanding of his two sides: "My My, Hey Hey (Out of the Blue)/Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black) the opener and closer of the Rust Never Sleeps album that finished a 10 year run of creative perfection that got him named Artist of the Decade, for the 70's, by Rolling Stone. This is similar to what Dylan had done in the 60's, from his debut album through Nashville Skyline.
Its funny how people have the perception that Neil was a acoutisic guitar guy when in fact he is a guitar rock genius
in fact he owns both
@@gablen23 And, not to mention the pianos and organs that he owns, especially his old pump organ! 😂

If you want to see him crushing his guitar, check him out on SNL doing ROCKIN’ IN THE FREE WORLD.
The godfather of grunge .All hail Uncle Neil !!!!
