  • This chopping block has been used outdoors as a side table for years. It can now no longer be used as a chopping block. I made it into a big bowl.
    For this project I again use the banjo extension on my Coronet Herald Record Power lathe. The beech wood is very dry and all end grain. So it's more scraping to get this piece of wood hollow.
    I had a few catches (not on video). The hollowing out was not very fun to do, but I am very happy with the end result. I like the shape very much.
    Dimensions are a little over 15 inches tall and 4 inches high. As a finish I used a polyurethane.

    Wow Frank now that is an end grain bowl! It really turned out nice and your lathe handled it nicely.
    I saw a comment about turning from the inside out. You are so right that on end grain it is the best way to do it. Inside out then pull the tool back up to the top. You did a fantastic job of that.
    Take care my friend,
    Gary

      Thanks Gary. And thank you very much for the feedback you give. I really appreciate that. I am there alone in my shed to gain experience, so it is very nice if someone lets you know whether you are doing things right or wrong.🤗
      Take care.
      Frank.

    Hi Frank, That is an amazing piece of turning. A huge blank and end grain as well. As you've already commented it took ages but it was definitely worth it. Fantastic work Frank and take care. Cheers, Huw

    That looked like hard work, I have a stump that I want to turn ingrain, I hope it is easier than that block of Beech. The bowl looks really pretty, so I suppose it all turned out well in the end. Keep safe, Rob

      Thanks Rob. If you're stump is still a bit green, it will probably go much better than my dry chopping block. What a dust that gave.

    Awesome! Never crossed my mind to reuse one like that. I can only imagine the dust created, although the end result is worth that pain. Thank you for sharing.
    Keep on turning.
    Cheers, Bluey 👍

      Pain it was Bluey. Indeed the end result makes up for everything.

    Very well done; very well cut; a real beauty🏆 Bet you had to keep reminding yourself it was *end grain* ? 😁 So nice to see wood repurposed to become a Thrice Blessed piece👋 Did it take a moment to gather youself to commit to doing this honking big bowl ? Thanks for showing🙏 Stay safe. -Mike🙏

      I did take me months to get the guts to turn this piece 🤭. I was not nessary to keep in mind that this was end grain. The catches told me this several times 🙄. Thanks for watching Mike. Take care.

    For sure it tooks a lot of time 😲 but was worthy. Not everyone can have so big bowls. I suppose You had enough on the end. Well done 👌 It was also a good test for Your lathe, Frank. Is the engine heated up?

    • @TheTinyWorkshop
      @TheTinyWorkshop  3 года назад

      It certainly took a lot of time Rav. I'm never going to do this again😖. Lots of dust and it was boring to do. The bowl itself makes it worthwhile😉. The lathe had no problem with it. I usually turned around 400rpm and took my time. Just did some nicer things in between. The only thing that got heated was my hand from the hot wood shavings.😅

    Dit was net als een boek lezen waar je eerst de laatste bladzijde van gelezen hebt. Ik wist het eindresultaat. Alhoewel het met vulling mooier was! 😂😂 Ik blijf het knap vinden, ook dat je precies weet welke beitel je moet hebben.

    • @TheTinyWorkshop
      @TheTinyWorkshop  3 года назад

      Je hebt dus niet in spanning hoeven zitten of het goed ging komen.😁 Als ik een verkeerde beitel gebruik en het werkt voor geen meter, dan komt dat stukje gewoon niet in de video 🤣

    That's just about the kind of chopping block I was contemplating to make! Just haven't found the courage to start glueing.
    You probably could have run it through a planer and it would have been as good as new again. But this bowl also looks nice.
    Do you always hollow from the inside out? Noticed it because normally I tend to do it the other way.
    And then about the DogLeg. Does that come standard with the Herald or is it an accessory?

    • @TheTinyWorkshop
      @TheTinyWorkshop  3 года назад

      Are you sure you want to make this?🤔 Why did you think it was used as a side table outside? They are heavy, large and bulky. Not convenient to use in the kitchen. Even now that I've made it hollow, it is still heavy and bulky😳. But very beautiful😁
      I found it easier to work from the center because of the end grain. First drill a hole, make it bigger with carbide and then use the bowl gouge. Then it is more side grain turning/scraping. The banjo extension is an optional accessory.

    Really cool. Was there no way to bring back the cutting board? No worries, looks great!

    • @TheTinyWorkshop
      @TheTinyWorkshop  3 года назад +1

      Maybe afterwards. But I didn't know how far the segments had come apart. A chopping block must also be hygienic and that was difficult to estimate. In addition, I found the chopping block large, heavy and bulky. This bowl too, but a lot nicer and more useful🤗
