    I used to work with a speaker company in Seattle building their enclosures. As part of my 'payment' they gifted me a 8" one-off prototype subwoofer driver. I did the speaker math and built an enclosure for it and mother of God it was a beast. My normal subs for my home theater were 2 12" 350 watt powered in three feet tall enclosures. This little 8" with a crazy throw in a tiny enclosure (12x10x10ish) sounded better and equaled the house-vibrating of the two 12's. So smaller can definitely be better if done right.

    As a happy owner of an SVS PB 12 sub bought well over 10 years ago, I couldn't agree with you more on the value and quality of this company including an excellent customer service. My sub is fairly large, the settings were strictly manual, is used mostly for home theater, but some music too, SACD/Blu Ray/DVD music and in a very large room with cathedral ceilings and it does a great job. The cost was about $7-800.00 including taxes and shipping, truly great product.

    You buy a 3000 micro to prevent your SO from mean mugging you. Especially since the SB1000 pro has more output and the PB1000 pro is on a different level but is also huge in comparison. SVS might not always be the best performance per dollar but it's hard to argue with their warranty, customer service, and features (app mainly) all while you can pick one up from best buy. Although one thing is with the dual opposing drivers you essentially get zero vibrations which is great for apartment people unlike most single driver subs.

    REL should send you the tzero or t5x. Fits into the micro sub and still somewhat budget. I'm using a pair of t7x and they're refined. No bloat or slam, just a smooth, rolling and fast textured bass.
    I also like kicky slammy bass for some music, the likes of JL audio W7s in my car. But I'm in a shared wall townhome and there's just no freaking way I could not piss off my neighbors more than with some JL subs. I was even concerned with SVS as I know they too can kick and slam and attack far above their price.
    If you're looking to hear all the bass with superb sound quality and integration the REL should be checked out!

    Don't buy a REL without running frequency sweeps through it first. My 12" REL couldn't play anything below 32 Hz without it turning into a distorted mess with a honking resonance at about 85 Hz regardless of the source frequency below 32 Hz. So you play 25 Hz and get a distorted 85 Hz honk as output. Returned it, ponyed up and bought an SVS SB16, and never looked back. Better in every way.

  • @johncallaghan3097

    I hope REL send you something soon, because IMHO their subs are very good. I got my REL T0 Mk II brand new at an end-of-line sale (they were replaced by the Mk III) for the princely sum of £249 ($312) here in the UK.
    It is tiny (roughly a 9" cube), but sounds way beyond what its size would suggest. Even the current replacement, the Mk III, is only £449 ($563) in the UK. To be fair, the REL Mk III may be a bit more expensive in the US, but the same goes in reverse for the SVS Micro -- £979 ($1228) in the UK.
    The SVS may have an app, but the REL is very versatile in that it has several different input types, including the high-level one I use, employing a (supplied) Neutrik cable fed direct from my hi-fi amp's speaker terminals (as REL recommends). You can simultaneously use an AV amp's LFE sub output too -- if, like me, you have a separate AV amp and two sets of front speakers.
    Maybe, with ingenuity, you could drive the one set of front speakers from both hi-fi and AV sources, both using the sub, though I haven't tried that. For me, AV use is very much secondary to hi-fi. A £200 pair of speakers is good enough for the AV fronts, but I use a pair costing 5 times as much (or 6.5 times as much if you didn't manage to get them in a sale!) for hi-fi.
    You can set the REL to go into standby (< 3 watts) after 15 mins without a signal if you want, which I do because I don't want to have to switch it off after a listening session.
    I haven't heard the SVS Micro, and who knows, it may sound better, but I'd never pay the asking price even if it did. For the same price as the SVS I got both the REL and my Earmen Tradutto DAC (which some prefer to the Denafrips Aries).

    The SVS micro looks cool, but I agree, 2 SVS SB1000 pro subs would be a better choice. As for me I actually ordered 1 SB 1000 pro initially for a modest home theater application, but had to send it back to SVS because I realized by going sealed I needed another SB1000 pro to get a deeper impact in movies. Music on the other hand, the SB 1000 performance was its strong point. SVS has such great customer service, they let me send it back and I tried out the PB1000 pro this time…and for movies-wow! No comparison. If I had unlimited funds, I would like 2 sealed SB1000 pro’s for music, and maybe 1 for theater stuff. But for now since I’m a CheapAudioConsumerDude, the PB1000 pro is as good as I can afford. At least if you ask SVS they ship the PB1000 pro with those Squishy foam plugs…and yeah love the App-wow what a game changer.

    I've been considering purchasing a pair of these for a while now for my small 13 x 11 listening space. I have a pair of REL T5/i subs with 8" drivers in boxes because they had a hum that I could never get rid of and they drove me crazy. They were the right size for my space, so I suspect the SVS Micro's would work very well too. The bonus with the SVS is the app, and if they don't hum. (I have a pair of Tekton M-Lore floorstanders but I'd like some more bass).

    • @erics.4113
      @erics.4113 2 года назад

      Did you ever contact rel? My t7 pair had a slight amount (not audible unless you went right up to the driver and put your head in front) and it went away completely with my new amp.
      If yours hum when the amp is off, though, you are somehow getting something bleeding into the speaker cable or ground loop that you may want to correct regardless of which sub you go with.

    I can’t help but wonder when SVS is going to add automatic subwoofer integration in the app on at least the iPhone. Theoretically, it can be extended to all phones by including a microphone evaluation/calibration feature in the app. Heck, there are many subwoofer tone generator and spectrum analyzer apps out there. Why not integrate those into the SVS app? With this, you could get 90% of the way to perfection.
    My guess is that they are already working on it.

    If you ever get a chance to compare a REL to an SVS you will immediately notice the REL has a flatter response. It's amazing what it'll do for music. It's hard to make it sound "boomy." That said they sound anemic for movies. REL's just don't offer that widow rattling bass presence like most subwoofers do. IMO they both have their strengths but they are in different areas.

    CG-23's were $200/ea, but discounted to $160/ea if you bought a few for HT. Maybe a worthwhile video topic. Also favorite SW choices to go with this small mixed music/HT system. I'm probably leaning towards 2 SE-8's, but also another good video topic, IMO.

    I'm looking for a super portable sub under 30 lbs to move around the house/backyard/park, with my small PA speakers which I would line out from. Playing outside is challenging and that is where I would need the most volume. I realize that piano gloss will scratch easily for this type of use but I'm super careful with my gear.
    I have a pair of Bose S1Pro's or a single EV Everse 8, I would pair it with. Both can play about 100dB max even though I don't push them to their limit.
    Would the SVS Micro keep up? I know it doesn't have the mid bass punch of a live PA sub. I'm looking for something to play tunes on that is super light weight and able to play audiophile music cleanly to about 25Hz.
    I wouldn't use this for any type of live performance. What do you think, is it worth the $900 investment?? I already have a SB3000 that I love, but that 50 lbs monster stays put in the Man Cave.

  • @redstang5150
    @redstang5150 2 года назад

    These small subwoofers are all about form over function, because for 900 bucks you can get so much more performance out of a 15-18" sub. So I like your initial comment because first and foremost - these are for people that want a SMALL sub and are willing to pay extra for more performance in that small package.

    • @JacobLikesMusic
      @JacobLikesMusic 2 года назад

      Perhaps true if you want the room to shake when you watch movies. But I heard that small subs, 8 - 10 inch will be faster than a 15 inch sub. So for music, I think smaller is better. I have a Rel t5x and I have the gain set to about a third to fill out the low end on my Elac ub52. So there is really no need for more power unless I had some huge speakers I think.

    • @redstang5150
      @redstang5150 2 года назад

      That's not really true. Think about it - nobody with a really high end system where space is not an issue is choosing to limit the drivers in their subs to 8" because they're "faster".

    • @JacobLikesMusic
      @JacobLikesMusic 2 года назад

      @@redstang5150 There are people who stack 2 or 3 Rel subs with 12 inch beside each speaker. At $5500 a piece that must be condidered high end. Of course there are probably very fast high end subs that have big driver size, with powerful amplification and perhaps some tech that helps the membrane to move faster. It doesnt mean that a $800 18 inch sub will be as fast as a $800 10 inch sub.
