I hope you've enjoyed my pandemic trips in the UK - I've really enjoyed my domestic travels AND I am pleased to say I am posting this video from Europe where I've filmed six fabulous videos. Flying is back! And so am I - next month I head to Mexico and the United States where I have no less than 31 (THIRTY ONE!) videos lined up to film featuring everything from crazy Mexican budget carriers to the USA's shortest flight, mega Amtrak trips, some luxury business class long haul, two brand new American carriers and of course, JetBlue's new transatlantic route to London! Please do enjoy this trip to Barra and I hope you like the slightly vloggy style of video, which I have done as a bit of a one-off. You should definitely get yourself out to the Scottish islands if you get a chance!
Great video Paul! There actually is an airport in Scotland that can be connected by rail and that's Glasgow Prestwick Airport and its one of the stops before Ayr which is the final destination on the route from Glasgow Central.
Glad you've finally done this flight. This flight is one of my all time favourites!!! Unfortunate seat tho. The best is 2A (row 1 was not sold last time I flew for safety reasons) and after chatting to the flight crew before the flight they decided to give us a mini tour of the island before landing. We were lucky and had incredible weather. You should have gone and seen the "castle" in the bay and had a cream tea at the local.
This is one of the best day trips I’ve done, ever. The flying is great, on a little Twin Otter and landing on a beach but there is just something about the place that makes it feel so special!
Thanks for another wonderful video! We are close to the flight path at Glasgow Airport and usually hear the flight from Barra before we see it! The Lomond Lounge used to be a restaurant open to the general public - great views!
Awesome! My wife and I did a trip from Homer, Alaska to Lake Clark nature preserve on a little Cessna. Landed on the beach next to all the brown bears. If you’ve never done it, Alaska needs to be on your bucket list.
Take the train up to Oban for the ferry, but leave enough time to visit the McCaig's Tower, Oban Distillery and try some very good fish & chips. During periods of track Maintenance on the West Highland Line, the Caley sleeper gets routed to Oban (not sure yet if they have fixed the various issues that plagued the new stock & Sleeper franchise.
Really enjoyed this one, Paul. For some strange reason I thought you’d been here before! Love the twin otters - flown in one in seaplane configuration in the Maldives :)
Flying around the Falklands can be fun too, many runways up or down the side of hills and often with sizeable bumps or ditches across them. Aircraft delivering a bus stop service, plus the bonus of the wildlife. Flying to the Falklands is a unique experience, with Ascension Island and being intercepted and escorted by fighters a bonus.
By far one of my favourite videos since you know I’m Scottish but live overseas. Thanks for the wee walk about the island. The thistle was a gorgeous picture. Glad the weather wasn’t to terrible by Scottish standards. ❤️❤️
Love the twotter - And flown on them many times up here in Greenland. GreenlandAir - Now Air Greenland used to operate 2 of them. My dad was an aircraft tech with the company for 49 years, so have been around them alot. Even landed on the Greenland inland ice with them, and C130´s from the NewYork Air National Guard on some of their training and logitstics flights up here... But Landing on that beach, is surely now on my bucket list. Great vid buddy
I really like this extended and VLOG-style video, you visit such amazing places it is is a shame not to share them, maybe a second channel if you don't want it on this channel :)
Potential trip idea, if you want to do more Ferries. Irish Ferries has an route from Dublin to Cherbourg in France, which uses their flagship ship W. B. Yeats. That Ferry has an number of classes of rooms, including several suite's. They even have an couple of premier suites with private Balcony, and walk in wardrobes (separate lounges and bedroom) which might make good content for the channel.
Outstanding video and one of your best. Barra is gorgeous and you showed it off so well (despite the rain!). More videos like this please. Glasgow is my home airport and hope to see you again soon.
I did the round trip in BEA Heron in 1972. Sadly (lol) the return was via Tiree so I did 3 sectors. Tiree is paved. We followed a submarine up the Clyde and I stood in the cockpit for most of the trip being a Cabin Crew member. Cost £2!
Barra is indeed a magical place. I've been twice and I'd love to get back there for a third visit. I've never flown there, although I've flown on Twin Otters many times in years gone by in Canada. The Western Isles are definitely a place where the old adage, "If you don't like the weather, wait ten minutes," holds true. BTW, the ferry you've shown at 21:35 is a smaller vessel that shuttles back and forth several times a day to and from the neighbouring island of Eriskay. The Oban ferry is a much larger, multi-deck, ocean-certified ship.
Did this trip a few years ago on a 'Loganair Adventure Day'. Not sure if these are a thing at the moment or will be in the future but it cost £75, out on the first flight and back on the second giving me about three hours on the island. It was magnificent.
I'm Scottish and never done Barra. Islay for a company golf competition (yes, a whisky company) was a bumpy ride but Katmandu to Lukla at back was a doozy. Only transport at Lukla was yak, pony or foot.
Years ago, I was on a coach tour on K'gari, formerly Fraser Island, in Queensland. As we were driving along the beach a small 8 seater aircraft flew overhead and landed in front of us. Those of us who had paid extra got onboard and it took off for a short aerial tour. I was sitting directly behind the pilot and part way through the flight he turned around and handed me the inflight meal. A plate of biscuits! When the tour was over we flew back along the beach looking for the coach and then landed in front of it. One of my favourite days in Australia.
@@kriskruz3792 to be honest Robert burns international is a bad name for a airport in my opinion they should just keep the name prestwick international
I enjoyed seeing more of your destination in this video. Sounds like you would do better booking row 2 on these small aircraft. I'm amazed how the otter cuts through the water on the beach.
Am not sure if it was you who commented on my trip to Barra and Tiree on the BEA Heron. As you will appreciate that was pretty unique. I hope to emulate your trip from SXM to Saba. This will be 3rd time lucky. First Irma passed through the day I was due to travel. Had not thought abouts hurricane season. Last year in May sounded a great idea but Covid naturally intervened. I shall persevere and hope to do it early in 2022. Love your videos. Flew with BA 42 years with 7 on Concorde. Only turn left now but pay for it.
@@Paul_Lucas I think it was a Garfunkels for many years. As a lounge it is much better than the Upper Deck and it would be nice if it was to remain an option for Priority Pass holders.
FWIW that wasn't the Oban ferry you saw; it was the little shuttle boat that connects Barra to the island of Eriskay, and thus the rest of the Hebridean chain (Eriskay is linked to South Uist by causeway).
I think it will be nice to have a small inn or guest house at the airport grounds for tourists and maybe newly weds who want to experience the joy of holidaying at the beach...idk just guessing.
Your comment at 15:12 ish. There are twin otter sea plane configurations operated by Trans Maldivian airways. However that's a visit post pandemic for sure.
Yup, Prestwick has been connected to the rail network for nearly 30 years now and you could also add that Edinburgh is connected via a tram link which is a form of railway. There was a proposal for a Glasgow Airport rail link a few years back but it came to nothing.
Wow ! That's a really cool landing and takeoff ! I thInks it's funny that the plane is tied down with those really long chains...but I guess it's so windy there, that without them, the Otter would tip over 🤔. You didn't say...was the chicken wrap tasty or not ?😃
Twin Otters are astonishing aircraft. After ceasing production in 1988, they were put back into production in 2008 because there's nothing on the planet that can replace them.
Quality Paul, sitting in coffee shop south of Seattle this Brit despite all the great footage can't stop thinking why he too would have gone for the coronation chicken wrap, for exactly the same reasons as you. Cheers to you. p.s Barra now on my list too.

My dog came from the little hotel off the beach! Teresa (the owner) is lovely. Great video again Paul.
The ferry to Oban is around 5 hours!😬
The Otter and the beach landing more than made up for the lack of bathroom footage. Great vid!
You seemed very relaxed on this one, Paul. Love the twin otter.👍🛫✈️
Great video Paul! There actually is an airport in Scotland that can be connected by rail and that's Glasgow Prestwick Airport and its one of the stops before Ayr which is the final destination on the route from Glasgow Central.

Great video just what we need here in Sydney under lockdown. Great to see some more of the destination as well in your videos.
Nice to see you back mate, I really enjoyed this video, thank you.

Great video, Paul. That salt water must be hell on those brake components.
They wash down all the planes on the Barra route with every flight.
Awesome to see you in Glasgow Paul.
Really enjoyed this one, you’ve definitely piqued my interest in visiting Barra! Oh and Capri Sun is the stuff of gods, sterling drink choice 👍🏻
Definitely a bucket list addition, and certainly worth doing a bit of island exploring by the looks of things too. Fab video Mr L 🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽
The length of 'runway' needed and the rate of climb on these small planes is very impressive. Looks beautiful up there, thanks for the upload.

I did precisely that back in 1987! Well, I say precisely, I think it was a six seater and we didn’t get any biscuits, but otherwise it was the same!
Such a refreshing experience for an adventurous soul.. 👍
Such a short take off even with the water friction, impressive

Hi Paul, Long time no see. Love to see you upload.
Scotland does have an airport with direct train access .. Prestwick international airport . 👍
weren't they thinking of changing the name of Prestwick to Robert Burns international?

Awesome Video
Thanks!
Very cool👍I bet the sand and salt plays havoc with the Twin Otter's maintenance cycles
Glad you discovered the cheaper airport bus option compared to the 500 service
It’s always wonderful to hear “apron” as opposed to “tarmac”!
Agreed. It irritates me when the media reports passengers left sitting on the runway!!!
Did you know that the film Whisky Galore was made on Barra, the island is a lovely place to visit.
One of my moms friends grew up in Barra
Some document the flights. Some document the destination. You do both and that is why I come back
