- The Montane Lakeland 100 is a classic 100 mile race in the UK. Along with South Downs Way 100 they are the most prominent and well known 100 milers in the country.
Lakeland 100 is notoriously difficult to enter. Years ago it was done on a first come first served basis and it always sold out within a few minutes. These days, like so many races, it is done by lottery. I was lucky enough to finally get a place after about 7 years of trying.

Certainly won’t be a 100 but thinking of signing up for an ultra or trail marathon later in the year… this will be useful!
It's a slippery slope Matt. You'll do a 50k, then a 50 miler and before you know it.....
Nice one 👍 looking forward to the series 👌
Looking forward to watching your journey and picking up tips!
Awesome! Thank you!
I’m looking forward to your third crack of the Ben Nevis ultra! 😊
You and me both! Can't wait to get that one done finally.
Great idea for a series. I'm with you on the preference for trail running, no food, no headphones. It's hard to beat. I'll take a bit of water on a hot day but usually forget I have it and don't use it until afterwards.
It can be hard to make people understand that they don't constantly need to be drinking or eating when it's been ingrained in them for years.
Look forward to watching your training block
Thanks Pat. I'll also try to be more diligent replying to comments!!
Love this idea. Would be great if you broke down your week next episode
I took your advice and broke down my week in Episode 2. I'll continue to do that in the coming weeks and talk about why I'm doing certain sessions. Thanks Craig.
Looking forward to this series, great start 😀.
Great series Stephen, looking forward to it.
Thanks 👍
Great, looking forward to this one. Need some training inspiration. 😀😀
I'm probably doing it to give myself some training inspiration!!
Look forward to this, good luck with your training.
Thanks Marc
Fab - will look forward to rest of the series. Im doing my first 100 in October the Centurion A100. Could we maybe talk about taking poles
Hi Michelle, yes will definitely cover poles.
Currently training for the Peak District 50 so I’ll be taking all the tips I can 👍
Such a great part of the UK to run in. I'm sure you'll have a great time. Do you have a goal in mind or just to finish?
Looking forward to more content
Thank you Tobias
excited for this series dropping in, am a fan of your running stephen and find it very insperational. cheers pal.
Thanks Jason. Anything particular you would like me to cover over the next few weeks?
Great to see you doing these types of videos Stephen. Will be following along for sure
It's a good project to keep me making at least one video a week!!
@@FilmMyRun The fat adapted running is very interesting to me. The nutrition side of ultra running seems so varied! That Tris Stephenson that came second in the ARC this year, did it all on liquid and no real food consumed!
@@trailrunningphil yup, fat adapted certainly doesn’t necessarily mean no food. That’s just the way Tris chooses to run. I am fat adapted but I eat. I just consume far less sugar.
@@FilmMyRun Very wise!
You do make it look fun
I make everything look fun!! Urm, probably.
Really looking forward to following your training journey, you have some amazing trails to train on, and i cant wait to see footage of the lake district, happy running and thanks
Awesome, thank you! Yes I'm really looking forward to the Lakes too!!
Looking forward to following your training series Stephen (I might even get back on the treadmill soon and join you on some Zwift runs, I have been enjoying my outdoor runs far too much recently!).
Be good to see you back on the old mill Steve!!
Looking forward to watching how the training goes - I'm looking to attempt a 100 miler 'soon' - building up with a couple of 50 milers this year - SWT at the end of May to begin with. I'd like to hear your thoughts on using your fat stores to fuel the run rather than using lots of gels/carbs during an event. You mentioned you do not use gels in the video. I too do not use gels. Be great to hear about the fueling strategy you apply during a high mileage event. Good luck and thanks for taking the time to make the content - much appreciated!
Hi Matthew. I will definitely be covering that during the course of the series. I am all for fat burning over eating too much sugar!
Brilliant Stephen. Looking forward to this series 👌
Thanks Mad Dog. Will try to make it worthwhile!
Hi Stephen. Love the channel and the content. I'm quite local to the lakes. I know the Lakeland 100 route and I'm doing the event this year. Look forward to seeing you there. Just pointing out to you that the first 26 miles are brutal. Many people go off too fast over this section and fail to complete the route. That's why there is such a high DNF rate. If you can I recommend you visit and have a recce. I'm sure you have seen video's on You Tube from the event. Good luck and see you there.
I too will recce but what shoe would you recommend? I know it's subjective, but I'd like to take the guess work out of finding the right balance between something with enough lug to handle technicality, but without wearing a heavyweight. For reference I usually like the La Sportiva Akasha but I'm tempted by a Speedgoat 4 wide if it can handle the rougher sections. Appreciate any advice forthcoming.
@Geoff C The terrain is a mixture of moorland (and bogs), rocky and stony paths. A good grip shoe would be better for the first half up to Dalemain as this is where there is more moorland. Some change shoes here for a less aggressive shoes you can have access to your drop bag at this point. I have some recce videos on You Tube. They cover most of the route. Only bit missing is Braithwaite to Dalemain. They may give you some insight of what to expect. See you there. The link below if from Coniston.

Thanks Mick. Won't have the chance to recce it, but I am pretty good at starting very slowly. I'm well prepared for it to be hard. But I like hard. We'll see how it goes.
Looking foreward to the rest of this series not that I'd ever do an ultra but am intrigued by the process🤔👍
Thanks Alan
This is going to be a brilliant series! I was already subscribed to your channel, so I tapped the bell 🔔 icon to be notified when you post.
Thanks John. There should be a decent amount of information to impart!
Great concept. 👍
Thanks Ian. Hopefully it goes ok.
Interesting as I am also doing the lakeland 100. See you at the start but I aim to finish not sub 30.
To be honest I have no idea if 30 hours is realistic. All I know if people who have done both the Arc and Lakeland seem to say they are similar in terms of finish time.
Excited for this series. Stepping up to my first 100mile this year at the Robin Hood 100 in September. I've done 100k races before and would be interested to hear about how different you've found them (guess running though the night is the big one) and how you differ your training for each.
Would love to do the Robin Hood 100 one day. Will definitely look at covering the 'stepping up' topic, thanks John.
Thanks for a great journey to follow and to follow up onto…you inspire me to go out and build up to a 50k trail run (for me that is far) nethertheless thanks
Thank you. 50k is still a good distance and we all started with 5k in the park!!
Do you have a plan we can see? I've done marathons but want to see what a 100 miler looks like for training time!
Hi there. I don't have a plan written down as yet. But I might put something on paper if only to help others watching the series. Thanks. I think though, when you are experienced and you've done a few of these things, the plan is all in your head and can be changed and reworked on an ad-hoc basis.
Awesome looking forward to this may even join in as I want to do a 100 miler by October. I’m at about 60k a week now and single run up to 50k, would be great to hear about optimum run weight as I find it really easy to over reward on the hard run weeks.
Haha, I do like a bit of rewarding!! I am a sucker for Red Bull, which is not great!
Since you are in the UK where it rains from time to time, I would love to hear your advice on running ultras in the rain. How do you manage heat and perspiration in rain gear? Prevent chafing? Keep your feet dry?
My 2p, rain waterproofs are to keep you warm, not dry. So if its not an exposure risk, a windbreaker is sometimes better than a hardshell. I let me feet get wet, the shoes tend to dry out with good polyester or even wool running socks.
Hi John, yes a lot of people try to keep bone dry in the rain and it's simply impractical. What you need are the right clothes to keep you warm and the right shoes and socks to allow for drainage. Your feet will get wet. I will build a discussion on this into the series, thanks.
I'm racing Lakeland 100 too
See you there Geoff. Hopefully it won't be too traumatic!!
Interesting that you are still use BPM to guage your marathon pace and not your Power off your Stryd. Do you really just use it for proper treamill pacing and for pace distance in the event GPs craps out?
No I don't really use Stryd much to be honest. I sometimes like looking at the data but it's more a curiosity than specific training. I like heart rate. I understand it.
Would like a bit of help with GPS watches. I currently have a Garmin that doesn't support GPX files, but thinking of upgrading.
You can import the gpx file into the website to make a course. Pretty sure my 2005 301 could then use a bread crumb trail so you garmin should be able to. If you want maps on the garmin, then thats different
Hi there. What watch do you have? Most watches will support some kind of navigation. I will certainly do a bit on GPS watches in one of the training videos.
Thanks. I saw your short vid on loading GPX files, which was really valuable. I currently have a Garmin Forerunner 45, but thinking of investing in a Fenix 6 Pro?
@@sellis1799 fabulous watch and will be discounted in a lot of places not that the 7 is out.
I have heard good things about the Fenix 6 Pro. Can't wait to fully utilise the features as I do enjoy walking and MTB. Many thanks for your response and planning on heading down to do some of the races you have featured around the North and South Downs. North West England is great, but doesn't seem to have to great choices you have on the south coast.
