Dinner Etiquette: Entree

  • Formal Dining: Entree - as part of the expert series by GeoBeats.
When your entree arrives it will be arriving from your left and taken from your right. Here we know we are having an entree because we have the cutlery that we know is appropriate for an entree. That is a large dinner fork and a regular size knife. Again, we are going to eat like this, with our forefinger on the back of the fork. It is one cut, move forward, bring the bite to your mouth. You do not eat all of your meat first and then move onto the carrots or the potatoes, but you would take a bite of each. If something is on your plate that you do not care for, you just work around it and do not make a big to-do about it. You would actually move forward and do the cutting and bring the item to your mouth and of course, chewing with your mouth closed. Now, you will notice on this plate that there are peas, which of course, is difficult to eat along with rice. So here, what you would do is put some meat on your fork, and then you would actually add the peas to it and then bring it to your mouth, making it very easy to eat. If you are taking a rest, the cutlery is facing up, including the fork, setting it on the outside of your plate. Never like oars on a boat, coming off the plate, but like this.
Then prior to having a sip of your beverage, you would use your napkin or speak to your other guests. Then pick up your cutlery, again, upside down, cut, move forward and eat. When you have finished your entree, then the cutlery would be placed together like this, indicating to the wait staff that you are finished. If you are a slow eater, you want to speed up a little bit and if you are a fast eater, you need to slow down so that all of the guests are finished approximately at the same time. Another key point is the hands must always be seen. So an easy rule is, always, sometimes and never. No elbows on the table. The old rule was the hands were only seen when you are actually eating and the rest of the time, they are on your lap. That is obsolete and inappropriate in today's global society. So it is always, sometimes and never.

There are manners that make sense like:
don't make noise when you eat.
      Chew w/your mouth shut.
Excuse yourself if you have to leave the table.
      Don't talk w/your mouth full.
But things like how you place your silverware, eating your meat proportionately to your sides, fork faces up and not down and down not up are just plain hogwash. Is there really a necessity to behave in such a way and look down upon behaving otherwise? Why do some kind of engineering feat w/your meat and potatoes if you want to eat your peas w/a fork instead of just using a spoon which is much easier?
People like this woman are what's wrong w/today's prejudice society. And before you write me off as being some uneducated member of the lower class, my father has a master's degree AND worked for the united nations. My mother also has a bachelor's degree and came from a wealthy family of entrepreneurs.

Some do not understand table manners and use of cutlery has evolved to make life easier not harder. Some people overdo it, true. But for most part it makes things more convenient for yourself and others around you. This video is in the balanced territory.

Thank you for this great video,
    Beautiful china.
It is interesting to see the difference between American and European dining etiquette.
    For example:
Coffee Service on the table during dinner is not a thing here.
Desert cutlery is also something we don't put on the table until desert is served.
An entree is called maincourse .
And bread and butter is cleared from the table when the entree is served.
Plates with food are served from the right and soup served from a terine is served from the left.
When finished, cutlery is placed at three o clock.
A charger is never on the table during the maincourse/entree.

In England, at least back in the 60's, this was taught at junior school (7-11).
Its so important. As I rose through my profession, despite my working class origins, I often attended dinners, met important people (including the Queen Mothers Ladies in Waiting who cooked me a meal in Prince Charles's Hunting Lodge at Sandringham), job interviews etc. Knowing my table manners made all these dinners a pleasure rather than a stressful or embarrassing occasion....and yes, I got the jobs 😁

Thanks for your video. I don't judge anybody about the way they're eating unless they are being completely obnoxious like speaking with food in their mouth, or chewing with their mouth open, or making noises, because these things really are irritating, however I really appreciate table etiquette in formal settings, not because I'm a snob but because in life you have different occasions and for each one you have an appropriate way to be, just like we're not expected to walk around naked in public. It's nice to vary things when you can and I totally understand that this video isn't for when you're eating home alone, it's for formal settings when showing respect to others is necessary, for example nobody would expect to enter a formal wedding wearing a t-shirt, jeans and flip flops, right? Likewise, when you're at a formal dinner it's nice to adhere to the rules like wearing a suit, eating in a certain way, having a better posture... It's a shame that so many people attack the person in this video for no reason other than they're horrible human beings. Please ignore the criticisms and bring out more videos :)

    • @eleveneleven572
      @eleveneleven572 4 года назад +2

To be correct, and Entree is a French word, you have a number of courses.
Aperitif....small nibbles or "amuse bouche" eaten whilst choosing your meal, having an aperitif.
Entree....is your starter ! Clues in the name so I don't know how Americans decided it was the main course
      Plat principal.....main dish
Then these can be followed by salad, cheese and desert.

This isn't somethingbyou have to use in your house, and no one is making you constantly eat properly. This is for high dining situations, where etiquette is critical.

The problem with placing your cutlery hanging off the sides of your plate, like oars off of a boat, is that it makes it highly likely that they will fall off making a mess of the tablecloth, your lap, or the floor. It also gives less room for other items on the table like your wineglass etc which again increases the likelihood of something being dropped or spilled.

Depending what time of day it was it determined how I crossed my knife and fork. If I crossed it through the first set of my fork, it meant it was breakfast, the second set it meant it was lunch and the third set meant it was dinner.
I was just wondering if you guys have ever heard of that?

why would click the video to watch informative etiquette eating, if you don't agree on how you should formally eat.
No ones pushing you to eat like that you were told on how to do it rightly. I think that's the reason too why you click and watch the video.

Wrong. Assuming you're right handed, you use the fork to hold the steak (for example) in your left hand and when the piece is cut lay the knife across the top of the plate then switch the fork to your right hand..........you THEN lift it to your lips. Don't use the fork to stab morsels from the plate..........slide the fork UNDER them.

What a smooth, urbane line, Jrod. Didn't you know that lapsing into the vernacular and cursing is a sign of 1. anger and frustration 2. small vocabulary 3 poor up-bringing 4 low IQ. Which of these best fits YOU?
