  • ► In this video, Joel Tadman tests nine of the latest and greatest players distance irons for 2022 up against each other to determine the leading model within this popular category. Players distance irons or compact, mid-handicap irons have a broad appeal because of the refined looks, ample forgiveness and impressive distance on offer and while one model might suit you better than another, we've attempted to assist your buying decision by breaking the video down into the categories of:
    Looks
    Feel/Sound
    Performance
    Value
    Verdict
    The irons featured in this test are:
    Callaway Rogue ST Pro
    Cobra King Forged Tec (New 2022 model not available at the time of filming)
    Mizuno Pro 225
    Ping i525
    PXG 0211 DC
    Srixon ZX5
    TaylorMade P790
    Titleist T200
    Wilson D9 Forged
    Notable mention to the new Honma TW757 Vx iron, which wasn't available in time for this test but would have been included if it was.

    Great content as always. Have been playing Mizuno mp 30 irons for years and needed a more forgiving iron because of age and ball striking problems.Was fit for the pro 225s with a slight 1-2 degree weak bend in each club for gap purposes .Excited as hell to hit these on the course. Thanks for a great review ...

    I currently game the Callaway Rogue ST Pro AW thru 6 iron and ST Max 4 and 5 iron. I have always been a Mizuno player and sure love the looks of the 225’s. The factor for my decision was how easy the Callaways were to get airborne. I had trouble with the 225’s, I am just not good enough for them. The Callaways were just so easy to hit for me. Very forgiving while having a blade like look.

    I was fitted recently and tried pretty much all of these. I went it hoping to get the Mizunos, PXGs, or Taylormades, followed by the Srixon and the Callaway…I do tend to have a more piercing, lower flight and needed the extra height. I wound up being fitted for the T200s even though they weren’t on my radar, nor did I care for their looks in the beginning. However, I LOVE them!

    Really useful vlog. I need the height and stopping power. Love Titleist clubs but not keen on the ‘plasticky’ cover on the back! Tried the i525 which good ….. too much choice and not much between them, so I guess a trip to have a brand independent fitting is the answer?

    I play i210s and love them but in the next few years as I pass 60 and my swing speed slows I would probably want these type of irons. For me looking at spin rates, performance and looks the Rogue ST, i525 and 225s stood out. As always with these types of iron when I look at the lofts throughout the bag some of them have some pretty big gaps between clubs which be worry me a bit

    Surprised you did not include other players distance irons like the mizuno 223 (also the only one available in left hand) and the pxg gen 4p (outstanding compared to others in my view in terms of sound feel and performance). I used to game the srixons and the apex but after significant testing on the course for many full rounds each and trying the 7 iron of eight different clubs I ended up at that time going with the pxg gen 3 (five forged) - and have never looked back. I get superb accuracy least drop off tight dispersion and bought them when the gen 4 came out and thus was superb value. Did try the d7 too amongst others but sound too clicky for me.

    I've played old forged Hogans & Mizuno MP-60s....some considered the best feeling irons ever made. I cant tell the difference when hitting my PXG 0211's. Still in awe these are a cast club...they are long though so if you have a decent swing speed i def recommend buying 6-GW. No need for a 5i and the gap wedge will fit perfect for your wedges on the lower end. $75/club is the best deal by far and its not close $500 for a set of these. All of these other brands your looking at almost double the cost. Dont waist your money go get fitted and get these irons

      In all fairness the D9’s are very nice clubs, but they are not a players distance iron. Neither are PXG’s. They are game improvement irons. Its why they are slightly less cost, cavity back and strong lofted. I was fit couple months ago and picked ping 525’s. I hit most of these including D9’s. Liked D9’s very much, made final 4, but felt like i would be replacing my burner 2.0’s with newer 2.0’s. Saw really no difference. Its all marketing and word play. They are all great clubs and most important factor is what do YOU like? Everyone of these in test will hit a 7 iron 160-170, so what suits you best? My 525’s are no better than your D9’s and vice versa. Congrats on the new sticks and hope you hit em well.

    ZX5, ZX7 combo here. Recently bought the ZX5 in the 5 and 6 irons and bent them 1° weak to try out. They're incredible. Long, high, and straight flying for those long par 3s and approach shots. I have a question for a future rules of golf video. There is a rule that you can’t change clubs during a round of golf but is there a rule that says you can’t change loft on your driver during a round? If you have an adjustable loft club of any kind, and the tools to change it on the fly, can you do this during a round or is that prohibited?
    Thanks in advance.

    • @stevekoch8255
      @stevekoch8255 2 года назад +1

      Yes, there is a rule against changing loft. You can tighten the screw if the head becomes loose, but you cannot change the settings, once the round starts, unless it breaks during ‘normal’ play, in which case you could replace the broken club with another and it does not have to be the same spec, if I remember right..

    • @chrisgilligan4968
      @chrisgilligan4968 7 месяцев назад

      For most people in the category to use this type of iron, you would be hitting them 1 club longer across the set. I'm a 12 handicap and have just ordered a set of T200's 5-GW. The Gap wedge I expect to hit about the same distance as my current 9 iron....then I'll have 3 wedges 52, 56, 60 instead of just 56 and 60 that I've been carrying the last couple years. I was playing a very traditional lofted set Mizuno JPX 921 Tour....so it will be an adjustment for sure - but I'm hoping to get just a bit more distance than my current set, and more importantly, consistency of distance on off-centre hits. Mis-hits going 5-10 yards less should make for more pars than mis-hits going 15-20 yards less. Fewer sand saves and long pitch shots required per round I expect will save some strokes. Not every mid-handicap player is in that range for the same reason. If you're a player that hits your irons long enough, consistent enough, and have the proper launch conditions, and landing angle etc., then hitting it further on it's own may not be much of an advantage. However there is something to be said for swinging a shorter shafted club coming into the greens giving more control than a longer club. Hitting a 7 like you would normally hit a 6 (or 8 like a 7...etc.) should give you just a bit better dispersion on average

    I wonder why you are reviewing the 2019 Cobra Forged Tecs? They are the oldest set in your lineup and the new versions come out in 2 weeks. I think this is a bit of a disservice to Cobra.

      I just ordered my set a week ago and they're due in tomorrow. I actually went with the 6-G because of how strong the lofts are. For the money and quality, idk how the 0211's can be beat.

    As the lofts on modern irons get stronger and stronger, it's no surprise that they're going further and further...or is it just me that's missing something..

    • @cameronloveless1751
      @cameronloveless1751 2 года назад +2

      True, but the argument is by positioning weight back & low, they can maintain peak height & descent angle of a traditional 7 iron. That comes with a significant loss f spin (as you can see from the PXG - which really is more of a high flying 6 iron). So put that in the hands of a slower swinger and you really can have trouble holding firm greens, as their spin and descent angle will be less than someone like Joel’s. So you walk a tightrope.
