I first watched this film about 7 years ago, trying to rebuild myself after cancer. Last weekend, I completed my first 100 miler, at the age of 60. I won my age group (as the only 60 year old woman to finish!). I thought it would be fitting to rewatch 'Life in a Day' to bring the circle together. Doing so, with a lump in my throat, I realise how important was the telling of each story, and how each woman's achievements and paths before and after honour the sport, and the matter of being human. Thank you.
I love that this film wasn't tagged as 'female runners' or the 'women of western states' because... 1) it was an awesome surprise and 2) It supports the idea that it is simply a film about awesome runners. Thanks so much Billy
@@chughes44 It doesn't really- my comment was simply an observation that usually videos which atypically focus on female characters are tagged as such, and that it was a refreshing change.
My husband has been training for 6 months for the 100 mile run. Which is happening January 19th. I don't know how he does it , but its something in his heart that makes him feel like a different person. He is so happy when he runs. Couldn't be more proud of him for his commitment. He's going to do great.
My gf and I just completed this endurance hike a few days ago. We did it in 5 days carrying 30-45 lbs. We don’t understand how this run is possible in 24 hours. We were in a lot of pain and felt like we were hustling. We hiked all day every day and set up camp in the dark. It is simply incredible that humans are able to run this so quickly. It is hard to tell on film how gnarly the elevation gains are and even worse, the descents. Mad props to these runners!
Everyone who finishes 100 miles in 30 hours is a courageous athlete, not just for the race, but for all the thousands of training miles that came before. However to me, a man, there is something especially heroic about these women. This is a great film, and instantly one of my favorites.
Billy you are one of the best things going for the sport of trail running. Watched first 5 minutes on my phone...stopped. This deserves to be watched on the big screen!
I haven’t been moved by a film in a long time. As a resident of Auburn I only recently started running- I grew up horseback riding and never liked running. For whatever wild reason, I decided to start doing this thing I’ve always told myself I couldn’t do. I work in mental health and running does wonders. Thank you for this film and more importantly for awesome women who do it. ❤
Thank you Devon for sharing your story. Too many people are afraid to stand up to the people who do these horrible things to them. Your inner strength is an inspiration to many.
These women man are phenomenal. Started watching this years ago. I come back to it every 6 months or so and get reinspired. Sometimes more often. 2021 I ran my first 1/2 marathon and will keep adding distance.
Whenever I need a little inspiration to get back on the trail I love to come visit your videos Billy. Always beautiful, often poignant, and a great reminder of all the cool things we humans can do. Thanks!

Trail Runner Tommy Billy’s films are amazing. I’m totally hooked! I can’t stop watching them! Although 100 miles seems far fetched for me, especially ones like this. It makes me want to go run a trail right now!!
I am so glad I watched this, so inspiring, and at this phase of my life, I needed to see this, it brought tears! Recently got back into running, its been walk-run in the beginning, then 10K, now training for a Half Marathon and now My friends are talking me into a 100K ultra in Chiang Mai. Now I know I MUST do it. As the runner said, 'this race is life' THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS FILM and for sharing !

While each of these women are awe-inspiring, special props to Devon Yanko: dealt with the no-show by her crew at the first aid station, then powered through the pain and doubt to finish in third place. Plus there are the difficulties she's overcome in her life to get to the start line. Huge respect.
Totally agree. Devon wasn't missing "stocked stuff" at the first aid station, she was missing her people, her emotional support. But as we saw, even if there is no one there to help, she is able to find the willpower to get herself back home. Bravo Devon!

Hi Billy ! I'm a L.A. native now living in the foothills of the NorCal. This is by far one of the best running documentaries I have ever experienced. You capture the feel of being in and around the race. You brought us all closer to what the Western States is like for most of us who will never experience it. Even my non-running wife was drawn in!
I just got drawn in hook, line, and sinker -- and I feel so inspired! This may never reach blockbuster status but I'm confident each one of your viewers has been significantly impacted by your work. For every person who thanks you out loud, there are many more who offer their own silent token of appreciation. Keep it up, Billy!

Watched this for the second time...and for the second time got teary-eyed--for about the entire time. What a fantastic job you did in portraying these amazing women. Thank you for assimilating this. Thank you for giving credence to the female runners out there. The sport is a beneficiary of your shared passion.
Thanks, Billy, for another stirring film. I'm 55 years old with next to no chance of running a hundred miler, but this film and the people in it are what inspire me to get out on the trails for just a taste of what they experience. Looks like tomorrow's rest day just got re-scheduled 🏃
Wouldn’t be so sure that there’s next to no chance the body is capable of incredible feats if you’re mind is strong enough and you’re willing to pay the physical price of going that distance.
sorry but your body isn't what is holding you back.. Ive seen all ages, genders and body types compete in these and in Ironman. Go watch one. There will be someone that was in your current situation crossing the line. You can do it.
Can anyone believe this has gotten 15 thumbs down? What's wrong with people? Finally, a beautifully-done film about the top female field in ultrarunning, at WS no less. Bravo. It made me want to jump out of bed at 1am and drive up to squaw to finally run on the trails up there.. Will be re-watching this a good handful of times this week. Lovely work Billy!
Just wanted to thank you for this Billy. Actually found this as a Lights and Motion fan who was only running half marathons, now will be doing my first 50k in May. Your exceptional film making encapsulates the humanity of races as well as the race itself. Selfishly hoping you have a packed 2018!
This film is powerful. A story about more than the top finishing women at the 2016 Western States. Running is the vehicle but the spirit of the women in this film is truly inspiring. This is a film about determination, battling demons and finding joy while pushing one's body to the limits. This 100 mile race is not just physically immense but a spiritual journey of epic proportions and Billy Yang captures the essence of the race and the runners in a way that moves your heart.
I take inspiration from so many aspects of this fine film. I only hope that, some day, during my own running, I can experience a fraction of the feelings these courageous women experienced during this classic ultra race. Special props to Devon who made such a great comeback, not only in this race, but in other parts of her life. I also found it ironic that the tiny woman from the flatlands of Nebraska smoked the field so convincingly in the high Sierras. Bravo!
Billy, THANK YOU for making this movie. I’ve been sucked into watching videos about ultra races and feel STARVED for female content. This sated me... for a little while at least. Thanks for being the unofficial recording expert on all runners ultra!!!

If I could give this several thumbs up, I would! Billy, I think this is the ultra movie I would play for non-ultra runners so they would understand how much we love the sport. What made this extra special was we got to preview it at Canfield's in Omaha, NE WITH the Pixie Ninja (Kaci)! Keep up the fine work.
If you need to break away from the camera, come out to IA/NE in December and run the Hitchcock 50/100 with our trail group. Message me if you're interested. I'd be glad to get you in compliments of the GOATz.

It is 3:28 a.m. EST. 20+ crossing sunrise is on the horizon. Recalling moments from this film is going to make the run that much more enjoyable, powerful, and meaningful. Thank you. I truly appreciate what you contribute to this endeavor in your documentaries and reflections.
I fell in love with trail running at the age of 45. 3yrs ago I started my journey into the unknown. Although this past 12 months I've been sidelined due to medical reasons I'm happy to return back to where I ran my 1st "real" trail run. I'll only get 7 weeks of training before the day, but I'm going to enjoy every step. This video, and all of Billy's stuff, motivates me to keep going. Tejas Trails - Wild Hare - 11/16/19 (25k)
as usual, a fantastic movie, thank you Billy, I never thought I can love trail, I'm a basic runner, only on the road, trying to reach my chronometric's goals, but now, I begin to enjoy the trail, I imagine the joy of sharing these "journeys" among the mountains, the paths, the forests and the lot of pain, the ruthless of effort needed, and above all the love and passion of crews. Thank you to inspiring us.
This is a wonderful watch - infinitely more satisfying than viewing a mere fictional film! These women are phenomenal! Very inspiring for me as I am training for a 3,000km through hike of Te Araroa in my home of New Zealand 😊 💖 ☘️ The stamina, determination and courage - it's the mental battle that is the greatest challenge to conquer.

TeamUltraSlow Kaci rocks. Thank you
If you need to break away from the camera, come out to IA/NE in December and run the Hitchcock 50/100 with our trail group. Message me if you're interested. I'd be glad to get you in compliments of the GOATz.
Amazing is all I can say..... Nothing but awe and admiration for all of these athletes. Billy Yang... This piece is truly inspirational! Thank you!

Done to all involved, teared up a few times, the heart these athletes have...my god
This was So good. I loved how this really showcased the women involved and all the people and their humanness and what makes them exceptional, behind the names. Thank you for this!
Yang, I know I'm a year or two late at this point, but your films are incredible. Thank you for taking the time to make these. I find them fascinating, motivating, and inspiring. Looking forward to supporting your work for years to come!

Watched this Friday night with my wife and a few beers. Great stuff!! Its a great look not only at some awesome athletes crushing it but their struggles in running and in life. Thanks Bully and everyone that contributed!!
It was great to watch this film again after a few years. It's a jewel of the sport.
After I know about Western States 100 for 2 or 3 years now and I’ve watched this particular video about it so many times. I can‘t even count it 😍 The start combined with that epic music moves me to tears more than one time 🥹🙏 To a certain extend it’s nurturing my plan to running that race too with all that amazing runners there 🤩 Thank you Billy for that amazing video about Western States 🙏🔥
Another great one Billy! Keep up the great work. Got me through the last 6 miles of a 22 mile treadmill run this morning.
Very inspiring!! Thank you!! Also, thank you to the women you profiled in this story. They all made me laugh and cry! But mostly, they made we want to get up and go be the best version of myself that I can be! Thank you again ladies!! 🤗👏👏
Awesome video! Amazing women doing extraordinary things.
Thank you, Billy Yang & Runners!!
Woman who did that pep talk about 39 minutes into the video. She should be at all the races! What a total star. I am NOT crying watching this video. 😭
Was that Courtney Dauwalter????
No it’s not her.
Waking up on the 9th in Europe, it's my birthday. And then seeing this pearl released, couldn't wish for a better gift. Super job Billy!
Jeroen Hoogstad happy (belated) birthday...and thank you!
This is so amazing! I am an ultra-runner in training and I am feeling so inspired by these amazing women. I run on the western states often as I live nearby. Great film! Thanks for creating it and sharing it with us all!
This film is extremely great and captures the personality of each runner with great precision
I never had any desire to run a 100 mile race before watching this... so inspirational! Thank you !
running is an emotion which is so beautifully depicted in this movie. Great job by the director!
Billy you make some fantastic videos my man, I could watch these all day.
I just got into Western States through the lottery. I had 1 ticket and it happened. I plan on watching this video a lot over the next 6 months.
One of the best documentaries I have seen! Good job and respect for making a movie about women.
BILLY!!!! WOW! What an incredible story to tell. 2016 Western had so many stories to tell and yours was so wonderful. Well done! Thank you for sharing this with us. You are very talented and am glad you are doing what you love.
These ultra films are always inspiring, this one in particular. What a group of terrific women, terrific humans: smart, resilient, determined, athletic open and articulate. Thank you!
Thank you for making such an inspiring film featuring the women in running. Incredible!

Enjoyed the film. A great job telling each of their stories and capturing the drama of the event. Some amazing women.
OMG. I can't even express how good this is. Billy, you are amazing and the women in this film are beyond just inspirational. THANK YOU!
Mike Deras 🙏🏻
as usual, a fantastic movie, thank you Billy, I never thought I can love trail, I'm a basic runner, only on the road, trying to reach my chronometric's goals, but now, I begin to enjoy the trail, I imagine the joy of sharing these "journeys" among the mountains, the paths, the forests and the lot of pain, the ruthless of effort needed, and above all the love and passion of crews. Thank you to inspiring us.
This is a wonderful watch - infinitely more satisfying than viewing a mere fictional film!
These women are phenomenal!
Very inspiring for me as I am training for a 3,000km through hike of Te Araroa in my home of New Zealand 😊 💖 ☘️
The stamina, determination and courage - it's the mental battle that is the greatest challenge to conquer.
