- On June 25, 2016 a collection of trail and ultra runners toed the line at the historic Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run running from Squaw Valley to Auburn. Among the 350+ were 4 women vying for the win and a coveted top 10 finish which is recognized annually at this prestigious event:
Magdalena Boulet, a HOKA ONE ONE and GU ENERGY LABS athlete is the returning champion and a mother of one who lives and trains in the East Bay of Northern California. She has an incredible road background including earning a trip to the Olympics in 2008 by placing 2nd at the Olympic Trials. (www.magdaboule... | @RunBoulet)
Devon Yanko is also a HOKA ONE ONE athlete and has excelled in many different ultra distances. This is her 2nd attempt at the Western States 100 Mile Race with her 1st resulting in a DNF, or Did Not Finish. She is the co-owner of MH Bread & Butter in San Anselmo, CA along with her husband Nathan. (www.devonyanko.... | @fast_foodie)
Kaci Lickteig placed 2nd in the 2015 running of the Western States 100 is among the favorites to win it. She hails from Omaha, Nebraska where she works as an in-patient physical therapist. (pixieninjarunni... | @ultrarunnerkc)
Anna Mae Flynn of Lake Tahoe, CA is going for her 1st 100 mile attempt after gaining entry via a golden ticket slot at the Lake Sonoma 50 Mile Race in 2016. She is a teacher and a recent ultra athlete. ( / flynnannamae | @annamaeflynn on Instagram, @amflynnrunner on Twitter)
This is a story of their 100 mile journey of which the great Ann Trason compares to living a "life in a day".

I first watched this film about 7 years ago, trying to rebuild myself after cancer. Last weekend, I completed my first 100 miler, at the age of 60. I won my age group (as the only 60 year old woman to finish!). I thought it would be fitting to rewatch 'Life in a Day' to bring the circle together. Doing so, with a lump in my throat, I realise how important was the telling of each story, and how each woman's achievements and paths before and after honour the sport, and the matter of being human. Thank you.
Thank you, and HUGE congrats on your finish - that's amazing.
Your words are inspirational. Thank you. Massive congrats on your 100 miler.
You're such an inspiration. Congratulations!!! I really admire people who can run these! Just an outstanding feat. 🙌💪🏽❤
Great comment 👍🏽
Well done 💪
I love that this film wasn't tagged as 'female runners' or the 'women of western states' because... 1) it was an awesome surprise and 2) It supports the idea that it is simply a film about awesome runners. Thanks so much Billy
There could have been some warning about all the weeping though... 😁
It's about Runners ... ALL people without putting them into boxes which is the disease of the times.
@@michalvalta5231 sincere weeping always wake up compation, and this is always good.
i hate the fact that it matters to you how the film is tagged.
@@chughes44 It doesn't really- my comment was simply an observation that usually videos which atypically focus on female characters are tagged as such, and that it was a refreshing change.
I don't run. I don't know anything about running. However, this had me up for an extra hour trying to find a pair of running shoes. So good.
Almost a year later. Did you end up running?
I bet you are an ultra runner now..
Did you hit them trails?
Please tell me you started running
Did you start running?
Dude, are you kidding me, forget the like button, where's the love button!🙌🏻
forget the thumbs up, wheres the High Five! ?
@@danpt2000Forget the High Five, wheres the b*ner?
My gf and I just completed this endurance hike a few days ago. We did it in 5 days carrying 30-45 lbs. We don’t understand how this run is possible in 24 hours. We were in a lot of pain and felt like we were hustling. We hiked all day every day and set up camp in the dark. It is simply incredible that humans are able to run this so quickly. It is hard to tell on film how gnarly the elevation gains are and even worse, the descents. Mad props to these runners!
I felt the same way when I was backpacking trails thinking “Who runs this”. Then one day I was running it. LOL
Everyone who finishes 100 miles in 30 hours is a courageous athlete, not just for the race, but for all the thousands of training miles that came before. However to me, a man, there is something especially heroic about these women. This is a great film, and instantly one of my favorites.
Billy you are one of the best things going for the sport of trail running. Watched first 5 minutes on my phone...stopped. This deserves to be watched on the big screen!
Patrick Forsythe atta boy!
Brilliant film. Went to watch it on phone, but waited until could view it on big screen.
im gonna watch some of it while pushing out a log.
Just make sure you don't watch when on a MTB.
My husband has been training for 6 months for the 100 mile run. Which is happening January 19th. I don't know how he does it , but its something in his heart that makes him feel like a different person. He is so happy when he runs. Couldn't be more proud of him for his commitment. He's going to do great.
How did it go? Is he still doing it? Wow
How did it go? Is he still doing it? Wow
I really like when Devon asks about Magda’s status during the race to know if she’s doing ok. 34:40. I thought that was really cool.
BILLY...I have homework to finish but I've been waiting for this for too long. I hope my professor understands why I did not finish the assignment.
Would it help if I wrote you a note?
Same! looks like my essay will have to wait
I'm with you! This can wait til the weekend!
When is Timothy Olsons video going to be out?
DO your homework first. This video will be on RUclips when you are done. Watch it then.
Biiiiiillllly Yannnnnnnnnnnng! You my friend have crushed it! What an epic film. Thanks for doing what you do. Very moving film and that touches more than just trail running.
thomas trieloff 🙏🏻
Trail Runner Tommy Billy’s films are amazing. I’m totally hooked! I can’t stop watching them! Although 100 miles seems far fetched for me, especially ones like this. It makes me want to go run a trail right now!!
SPOILERS. While each of these women are awe-inspiring, special props to Devon Yanko: dealt with the no-show by her crew at the first aid station, then powered through the pain and doubt to finish in third place. Plus there are the difficulties she's overcome in her life to get to the start line. Huge respect.
Man I would be livid if my crew never showed up
Totally agree. Devon wasn't missing "stocked stuff" at the first aid station, she was missing her people, her emotional support. But as we saw, even if there is no one there to help, she is able to find the willpower to get herself back home. Bravo Devon!
@@Andomaca1 if you're that reliant on your crew, especially that early in a race, you're mentally weak and shouldn't be running Western States.
@@jeetchatterjee Agree. I don't like how she responded. Yes, this crappy thing happened. But that doesn't mean you get to be an asshole about it and rude to everyone around you. I lost a lot of respect for her.
Why did you put spoilers like that in the comments mate?
I'm deaf, where are the captions? Bummer.
That was such a good movie. Thank you Billy and thank you Magda, Devon, Anna-Mae and Kaci.
Eric Cote they're the best.
I just got drawn in hook, line, and sinker -- and I feel so inspired! This may never reach blockbuster status but I'm confident each one of your viewers has been significantly impacted by your work. For every person who thanks you out loud, there are many more who offer their own silent token of appreciation. Keep it up, Billy!
I'm stoked, used to run xc and track in high-school. Got the running bug again and am training for my first marathon... but one of these ultras sounds like great mental and physical challenge ...the fridge is empty and i'm hungry :)
Well said @HikingNerd - the impact is real. Thanks Billy!!
Good day to celebrate woman. Thank you for this wonderful film.
We all need a person like at 39:00 in our life!
Yeah, she is unbelievably motivating, supportive, encouraging,
god damn you Billy Yang, I can't stop watching these awesome docos!! Another hour of chores lost to a Bill Yang production ;-)
This is one of the most incredible films I've ever seen on any sport- let alone ultra running. Holy shiznit!
Awesome! Dropping it on Int. Women's Day, as well!
Thank you Devon for sharing your story. Too many people are afraid to stand up to the people who do these horrible things to them. Your inner strength is an inspiration to many.
The community needs more of these classic B.Y Films!
just heading to bed and up pops a notification this video is ready so no bed yet thank u so much billy been looking forward to this for months
If I could give this several thumbs up, I would! Billy, I think this is the ultra movie I would play for non-ultra runners so they would understand how much we love the sport.
What made this extra special was we got to preview it at Canfield's in Omaha, NE WITH the Pixie Ninja (Kaci)!
Keep up the fine work.
TeamUltraSlow Kaci rocks. Thank you
If you need to break away from the camera, come out to IA/NE in December and run the Hitchcock 50/100 with our trail group. Message me if you're interested. I'd be glad to get you in compliments of the GOATz.
I haven’t been moved by a film in a long time. As a resident of Auburn I only recently started running- I grew up horseback riding and never liked running. For whatever wild reason, I decided to start doing this thing I’ve always told myself I couldn’t do. I work in mental health and running does wonders. Thank you for this film and more importantly for awesome women who do it. ❤
These women man are phenomenal. Started watching this years ago. I come back to it every 6 months or so and get reinspired. Sometimes more often. 2021 I ran my first 1/2 marathon and will keep adding distance.
Thanks, Billy, for another stirring film. I'm 55 years old with next to no chance of running a hundred miler, but this film and the people in it are what inspire me to get out on the trails for just a taste of what they experience. Looks like tomorrow's rest day just got re-scheduled 🏃
Wouldn’t be so sure that there’s next to no chance the body is capable of incredible feats if you’re mind is strong enough and you’re willing to pay the physical price of going that distance.
sorry but your body isn't what is holding you back.. Ive seen all ages, genders and body types compete in these and in Ironman. Go watch one. There will be someone that was in your current situation crossing the line. You can do it.

Wow...I’ve just started my journey in ultra running and if this doesn’t inspire you, I have no idea what will. Amazing...
Minute 39, why I am racing? Oh I ask myself that every single time I do a long race but I keep doing that. I still got no answer.
Whenever I need a little inspiration to get back on the trail I love to come visit your videos Billy. Always beautiful, often poignant, and a great reminder of all the cool things we humans can do. Thanks!
Hi Billy ! I'm a L.A. native now living in the foothills of the NorCal. This is by far one of the best running documentaries I have ever experienced. You capture the feel of being in and around the race. You brought us all closer to what the Western States is like for most of us who will never experience it. Even my non-running wife was drawn in!
Perfect. Love it!
The music chosen as a backdrop plays a significant role in the film...
This was So good. I loved how this really showcased the women involved and all the people and their humanness and what makes them exceptional, behind the names. Thank you for this!
Great movie Billy. What a race! Glad you include Kaci's scream when seeing snake at 41:29. I remember she mentioned it in iRunFar post-race interview. :)
I WOULD BE SOOO PISSED THAT MY CREW WASNT AT THE AID STATION WHEN YOU NEED THEM.
Michael 732 YOU HAD ONE JOB!!!!
Me and a thousand people were thinking those very words michael 732. I would go ballistic if I beat my crew to the aid station. How does that happen?
A couple notes here with regard to this. You have to remember that your crew is doing you a huge favor by crewing you. If they mess up somewhere, you have an entire aid station to work with. It's your job as a runner to be prepared. Most importantly, getting to Duncan Canyon aid station is reallly really hard. I had the good fortune of running the race this year, and my crew was there, but if they weren't I would be worried about THEM. You should never shame your crew if they can't get there.
Mitchell, you mean there are no roads to that place?
@@danpt2000 There are, but it's not easy driving by any means. They are mountainous backcountry roads.
Kaci positively floats. Its like there is no exertion at all. Amazing to watch.
Billy you make some fantastic videos my man, I could watch these all day.
Incredible as always! How appropriate to share it on this day recognizing women.
Unfair. Women can put ice in their bra in ultra races!
Do they have an "International Mens Day" to celebrate men???
Tuesdays Runner How about everyday since men get paid 25% more on average than women do? Fix that and then we can talk about equal recognition days
You’re not seriously gonna make me have to go back and figure out who got engaged are you? I know it wasn’t any of the top 10, Magda (obviously), or Anna Mae. Fine, I’ll give you another view. I already watched almost every single ad break. You got your coint bro. Brb.
Edit: okay, I went full stalker, checked the times on the website for official finishers, and still don’t know for certain bc you can’t see the hour in the photo 1:00:37. I have it narrowed down to three women who came in very close to last in their category. They’re still champions in my book for entering, running this race and actually finishing. I just don’t know it was a 36 year old Masshole or a Californian in her 40s going by the records and deducing who it could be right after catching their breath and getting some fluid in them at the finish line. I just wanted to be nosy bc I love romantic gestures and a partner who is that supportive of his partner that he proposed at the end of the race. I think it’s really sweet and beautiful. Now that’s a true ending to “Life in a Day”, showing the beginning of a new life together about to begin. 💖💍🏃🏼♀️🏃🏼♂️💯
I am so incredibly humbled and inspired watching these incredible women.... thank you for producing and posting this.
I am watching this great film again for the tenth time (?), watching the segment beginning roughly at 34:00 when you capture Devon Yanko literally gathering her courage and willing herself back into the race. Its an amazing scene. Remarkable really. The way you prefaced it with the comments from Meghan was graceful, but to watch it happening before our eyes is incredible. You were there. But you weren't there. Great film making.
seaturtle7777 loved that part as well
Ok, so it's 2021, I am recovering from an injury, and I just re-watched it. I think I got the spirit back.
I am so glad I watched this, so inspiring, and at this phase of my life, I needed to see this, it brought tears! Recently got back into running, its been walk-run in the beginning, then 10K, now training for a Half Marathon and now My friends are talking me into a 100K ultra in Chiang Mai. Now I know I MUST do it. As the runner said, 'this race is life' THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS FILM and for sharing !
Billy you have raised the bar this is so much more than a running film, sat here watching it with tears in my eyes. Thank you so much.
Well that was beyond beautiful and inspiring. As a doco it has fed the inner runner in me who has been very sadly suppressed. I also want to say that Devon and her story were especially inspirational- what a woman!
Tanya Oliver agree, she's a tour de force
Woman who did that pep talk about 39 minutes into the video. She should be at all the races! What a total star. I am NOT crying watching this video. 😭
Was that Courtney Dauwalter????
No it’s not her.
I take inspiration from so many aspects of this fine film. I only hope that, some day, during my own running, I can experience a fraction of the feelings these courageous women experienced during this classic ultra race. Special props to Devon who made such a great comeback, not only in this race, but in other parts of her life. I also found it ironic that the tiny woman from the flatlands of Nebraska smoked the field so convincingly in the high Sierras. Bravo!
Just wanted to thank you for this Billy. Actually found this as a Lights and Motion fan who was only running half marathons, now will be doing my first 50k in May. Your exceptional film making encapsulates the humanity of races as well as the race itself. Selfishly hoping you have a packed 2018!
Billy you're so good in telling stories... thank you for this awesome film, I went for a run just after watching it 👏
Perfect.
Awesome - the amount of human character displayed here is simply unbelievable - incredible people - Go Humans!
Wow, these women are incredible and each one just their unique self. Billy, thank you so much for bringing this into my room here in Cairns, Australia. Thank you for all the work you and your team put into this, and thanks to these women and their supporters for showing what is possible. I love Magda's words at the end.
'Just another obstacle that I overcome and life goes on. I think I truly think you come of our all those experiences so much more rich. It doesn't meant that they will get easier, life doesn't get any easier. it is just you are a lot more prepared and equipped to handle all the situations that come at you. an they will whether its running or not. Life happens and you gotta be ready.'
Tanya Griggs when Devon asked if Magda is okay I was inspired
Beautifully done - thanks for sharing! :)
Great film, Billy! Really gave me some perspective on my own training and race expectations. Keep them coming!
Awesome Billy! Been waiting so long down under, and perfect timing! 3 days away camping before I can use this as perfect inflight viewing when flying on my work trip. Already know the stoke factor will be damn high.
I laughed so hard (SNAKE!) and I cried and I was amazed by those incredible women. Thank you Billy, for the stories.
Another great one Billy! Keep up the great work. Got me through the last 6 miles of a 22 mile treadmill run this morning.
Dude this video is just awesome, loved every second. So strong. Internation womens day timing was briliant, your camera is just perfect and the stories are so good, every ultra runner can relate to that and knows how hard it is. Keep up the great work. Love your videos. Also good luck this season, nail the trail and have fun.
Ah, thank you so much Jan!
Once again, knocked it out of the park. Tears, laughs and chills. Thank you for sharing part of the story of all these remarkable athletes!
Do they drink mountain dew during the race for the sugar? I was surprised to see them drinking that. Great documentary!
wonderful!!
Regards from Chamonix!
Does anyone know which the song in minute 52 is?
Got me tears when i watched Sallys film, got me again this time. Thanks Billy, thanks for the experience and inspiration.
I'm laughing and crying, this film was epic, I LOVED it! Women supporting women with so much humbleness.
Ps. That pep talk at 40mins- amazing!
OK. New Devon fan for life.
seaturtle7777 same :)
She's incredible huh. ❤️
Biiiiiillllly Yannnnnnnnnnnng! You my friend have crushed it! What an epic film. Thanks for doing what you do. Very moving film and that touches more than just trail running.
thank you!
Billy gets it right... again. Who is Anna Mae's coach? I loved her. Inspirational talk then - drink this pickle juice! xxxooo
Billy....i have no words to tell you that this film it is ESPECTACULAR. Thanks so much for crate a piece like this. As you know, you have a friend here in Spain and if you want to discover our mountains you have home here.!!! Thanks again!!
THIS! This art, this passion, this female representation. Thank you for inspiring all of us! And thank you to the women, who although so fierce- showed us their vulnerability. And Devon... so real! #speechless
Billy such an amazing work, goosebumps when Kaci crossed the finish and I was happy to see Devon finishing 3rd.
Same, every time.
Poor Devon! Her crew was a no show. Unreliable crew really is bad...(see about 14:00 in the film)
I'm not sure if considered rude to comment on a video that is over a year old but, horses do still run this race every year. The AERC hosts it. That is how I got into trail running. At 19, I didn't feel it was in my horse's best interest to keep pushing long trail rides (he's still happily being a pet and trotting around on trails for fun if anyone is curious) and I kept seeing videos about these incredible people doing the same distances. You can't watch this and not be impacted! I had no desire to build the bond and training with another horse so, I run. And I love it. Maybe one day, since I won't get to go down that trail with my horse, I'll make it on my feet.
awesome movie! showed raw emotions of human beings..congratz
Beautiful. Emotional. (I did cry when Kaci reached the track) Incredibly Inspiring. I have two wonderful little girls for whom this will become required viewing as they grow up. Thank you Billy.
Billy...take a bow my friend, take a bow.....another top notch piece!!!
Yang, I know I'm a year or two late at this point, but your films are incredible. Thank you for taking the time to make these. I find them fascinating, motivating, and inspiring. Looking forward to supporting your work for years to come!
Amazing is all I can say..... Nothing but awe and admiration for all of these athletes. Billy Yang... This piece is truly inspirational! Thank you!
Ok. Devon Yanko is my hero now.
Thank You Billy. Beautiful. Just beautiful.
Karolina Czeska mine too
I stopped watching halfway through, I couldn't take it anymore!... I HAD to go for a run.
Thank you so much for this film Billy! I've been a fan for a long time now and it's a huge privilege being able to view your work. You are documenting history in the making!
Billy that was epic! what an impressiv person Devon seems to be!
I fell in love with trail running at the age of 45. 3yrs ago I started my journey into the unknown. Although this past 12 months I've been sidelined due to medical reasons I'm happy to return back to where I ran my 1st "real" trail run. I'll only get 7 weeks of training before the day, but I'm going to enjoy every step. This video, and all of Billy's stuff, motivates me to keep going.

This documentary was amazing
Wow thank your for sharing your story Devon ❤ and never giving up.
This was fantastic, Billy! Very well done! Thank you for sharing. Amazing, amazing work you do. I love the bonus footage of Speedgoat at the end as well. Magda is so tough! Good luck with your 100 mile training and #veganmarch!
Wow I'm blown away. Im so new to the running scene. More people need to know that this is even happening. 100 miles?!!! Omg
What an absolute banger of a film! Very well
Done to all involved, teared up a few times, the heart these athletes have...my god
Thanks for making this! I think I've played it 3x-4x over the last few weeks on my RUclips.
Just gorgeous. Thank you, to you and all the runners, particularly Devon for speaking so bravely. Great film.
Thanks for sharing this! Fantastic movie, is very inspiring for me. The production value of this is very appreciated.
Great photography, excellent music, you simply nailed it!
***** amazing documentary film ***** deserves an oscar *****
Prepping for my first 100. See all these vids of people finishing it in just over 3 minutes, at least these runners take over an hour to finish! Seriously, awesome video!
Seeing their finish after 18 hrs running...makes me crying....I can feel how grateful and relief when reach the finish line..so proud of you .
What a wonderful video. I love the stories and appreciate the strength of these athletes. They are a inspiration for us all. ( :
Billy this was an amazing story. Pumped me up!
Loved every minute of this Billy! Truly captures the emotions and spirit of ultra running. Awesome stuff 😀
Spectacular film. There is so many aspects involved about running. Great job
Billy this is the best documentary I have ever seen. You are awesome keep up the good work !!
Billy, THANK YOU for making this movie. I’ve been sucked into watching videos about ultra races and feel STARVED for female content. This sated me... for a little while at least. Thanks for being the unofficial recording expert on all runners ultra!!!
Thank you Kate. So honored I got to share their stories!
Best running movie I've ever watched....Inspiring stories, thank you to all the crew.
Awesome. Amazing Billy. Thank you for this. Always inspired by you and your videos.
I love that this is just about runners, not male or female runners, just runners. I have so much respect for any person that will toe the line and put themselves to the test...
Absolute class from start to finish
