Uff-Da! That is one scuzzy looking starter. Too much toxic soup dumped on Minnesota highways. Eats automobiles and their parts for breakfast. Had to replace the 20 year old starter on my 97 Mazda B2300 (Ford Ranger) recently. Regardless the inner wear, the starter still looked brand new on the outside, and I never wash the undercarriage. Nice part is, changing a starter on these rigs takes little more effort than changing the oil.
new starter itself with solenoid was 116.00 bucks on my 98. seeing as its nearly 20 years old I am putting the whole thing in so I won't have to deal with it again (hopefully).
You know if you think about it for a starter that old, installing a new solenoid will not hurt anything. It would suck to pull that starter out again to replace the solenoid after you replaced the brushes.
I have a 2000 ford ranger started with getting a clicking sound about a month ago when trying to start, the first time it did on about the 3rd try it finally started. the second time I was able to get it to start by tapping the starter with a hammer, then started fine for about a week with or so with no issues, then finally quit and wouldn't do anything. I replaced the starter 2 days ago and it was starting fine until today, can't get it to do anything. Also, I did not replace the cable on top of starter as it was just used the old one. Could that be my issue? and if so, how come it started so well after replacing the starter 2 days ago? Thanks for your help.
Wires I got the same problem just can’t afford the wire to re do it mines a 97 2.3l 4 cylinder if you tap the wires on the solenoid with a screw drive while someone try’s to start it I’ll go Edit: that 2.3l 4 popper seems bulletproof to me so far I’ve had a cracked head at 250k miles got them resurfaced and now I’m 1.3 million and still running strong only problem is this starter issue eventually when I get enough saved up imma re wire the whole truck and get it back to original
good god my friend. most of us would have just got a new complete starter and all to start with and you can get them fairly cheap on line so uhh this is kinda entertaining
I wouldn’t just fit a new solenoid. I’d fit the entire starter and solenoid. Not much difference in price. Both done. No problems. Mucking about with individual parts on a knackered starter motor is false economy as one par fails after another. Whack in a a whole new starter, with solenoid
mjmcomputers I own a 98 Ford Ranger XLT it has the 3.0 in its automatic got a hundred thirty thousand miles on it really good condition okay the problem is I was driving down the road the sumbitch shut off on me like it was out of gas ruin my fishing day so when I come to a complete stop I tried starting it up I smelled something burning got under the truck quickly figured out it was the starter so I get my truck back home I go and buy a brand new starter mind you my battery is only 5 months old brand new I get it to the house I put this new starter in it I go to crank it over when I did I got this loud ass screeching noise coming from it sounds like in between my transmission and my motor I know that narrows things down your flywheel your torque converter things like that I'm not a mechanic mind you once again I'm a tree trimmer I've had six different people come look at my truck I've had them tell me my motor is blowed up I've had him tell me that my transmission was bad timing torque converter was bad pretty much putting everybody s*** together I have to replace my motor and my transmission none of the dudes knew what they was talking about now I have a video on how it sounds if I could figure out a way to send it to somebody on here I'm trying to avoid going to a repair shop necessarily don't have the money for that trying to do it all on my own learn some new s***without spending a crap ton of money and being able to do it on my own I cannot have the truck towed but need it fixed ASAP and no BS I'm not being a smart-ass I'm just simply saying I am tired of wannabes they have no clue what they're talking about please will someone help me that knows what they're talking about I'm about to run a couple sleeve the shotgun shells through the sumbitch Ben many late nights still can't figure it out I've gotten nowhere other than my starter being taken out of my truck and my old drained out someone please help
how did you get to the top mounting bolt between the solenoid and the engine? I got the bottom 2 out fine but I can't seem to get a wrench on the top one. I'm thinking of taking off the tire to get to it.
Got a ford ranger 4.0 1998 automatic. Replace starter still no crank no start. Battery good. But at times it will crank and start. After you turn it off no crank no start. Wait a day and it will crank and start shut it off and something.
I'm having the same problem on my 1996 ranger. I replaced the battery but when I turn the key, there isnt even a click or anything. We checked all the fuses and they are fine. Do you think replacing the cilinoid would be a good place to start?
Nathan Widiker I would start first by checking and cleaning all the electrical connections. If everything is clean and getting the power it should then look at the starter/solenoid.

You make things look easy lol

Hello. I'm from Brazil I have a problem with my ranger 97 .4.0 that a. Wheel opens when the re. Any solution ??
soak that straps when they look like that with solder , once you have it back together , that will prevent it from breaking in two latter on ...
This starter fits ford 302 with AOD. I have this in mercury GM 1984

jean marin I used a socket with an extension to remove the starter bolts. There wasn't much in the way on my truck.
I have a 91 2.3 5 speed and I used an extension and a swivel

Replace the fender starter relay. Ford calls it a solenoid but it isnt
Is there a difference in the starter of a 1998 Ford ranger 5 speed transmission and a automatic transmission
Shouldn’t be any difference as long as it’s a 2.3l 4 cylinder
I have a 2000 Ford Ranger XLT cranks but no start? 🤔
Check your coil packs then fuel pump
Also consider a tune up
What year is your truck?
John Dunston 1997
