It will be interesting to see just what is being projected in the newer light. Is it the Samsung matrix of 100 or so LED elements? Or is it a prior design? We know a matrix headlight was being demonstrated at the Giga Berlin open house, can you determine if that's the same unit that is in the USA M3 & MYP cars?
I rented a Tesla with the older headlights and bought one with the newer headlights. The light output and pattern are superior on the newer one which is nice. Small differences that I did not notice prior to purchase but I'm glad I have them.
I have a 2022 Tesla Model Y Long Range and was wondering. (1) Does it already come with them? (2) If not then would I be able to change to them and would it work? Thanks.
Tesla made no guarantee on which headlight the standard and long range 3 and Y came with. Some had reflector lights and others have projector. Some have tried to swap, but the software seems incompatible and they are not interchangeable. Maybe a Tesla technician might be able to get into the deep settings and update it, but from what I understand you cannot swap the two.
@@gftgrill I had the unfortunate luck of hitting a deer randomly @ 2 PM on a Friday 3 weeks ago. The Tesla-certified repair shop is waiting for Tesla to push the software update to my MYLR so the global-style headlights will be enabled.
I think it mostly depends on trim. The performance models get the projector lights. The standard range get the reflector lights and I think the long range has a mix and depends on VIN. Your best bet is probably to contact your local Tesla center and see if they can look up the correct part number by VIN
I have the older 21 model y headlight. If I remove the serviceable DRL unit will I be able to tap the DRL voltage going to leds? I have a need for 5 mA of power that is available when DRL runs . Thanks for any info
I do not know what voltage those operate at. In theory it sounds like it's possible. I can tell you that the internal wire for that corner LED unit is pretty short, there wont be a lot of room to work with and you would have to drill a hole in headlight housing to tap into those wires.
@@gftgrill Thanks for the info ! FYI I am making a auto garage opener that is triggered by 3.3 v to 12 v at a draw of 5 mA . The DRL is the only thing in the Tesla that fits the on / off requirements so I think I will tap it and see what the voltage it is and try it. I have quite a lot of experience with this stuff so tapping should be at a pro level. Thanks again Al
@@AlWassmer If I'm following along correctly, whenever your DRL's turn on you want to auto trigger the garage door opener. Would this not trigger the garage door opener to basically run the entire time the car is on? IE you would be driving down the street and the DRL is on triggering your garage door opener to broadcast the entire time?
Now the question is: for all those people (owners of non performance 2021 cars in the US, or of early 2021 cars in Europe) who would like to swap in a pair of Matrix lights, will that work? Have you tried it? Do you plan to try it?
@@chren3640 Apparently there is a software issue that keeps matrix inactive. There is a thread either on Reddit or the Tesla Owners Club (sorry but I can't be more specific, it's been a while).
@@RetroExhibitCollective that depends on where you are. Almost all 2021s in Europe have them. In the US, only the Performance had them, then the LR. Recently Tesla dialed US cars back to standard, probably due to to supply chain issues. As far as I know, it was only a couple of weeks.
@@superleggenda strange, yeah I live in the us and only have the standard range plus (before they changed it to just the model 3 rwd) and it had everything, even the newer interior.
No, there is a software difference. People have tried on the Model 3, but it doesn't fully work. It will physically fit and uses the same connection, but there seems to be a software incompatibility
Thank you! Really hope Tesla will be able to retrofit these new headlights
since it uses the same connector and should physically fit, I think it might be a simple install and software update.

Sadly my 2023 MY AWD picked up 2 weeks ago doesn't come with the matrix headlight. Thanks for the Austin built.
Finally a video showing the differences!
Woohoo my standard range 22 model 3 did get matrix lights!!! Got lucky!! An a free charger 😁👍👍👍

Great video! Can’t believe the old ones didn’t have projectors. What year the design it for 2005? Lmao
