I had bought a LACIE external hard drive connected by USB to my iMac. I followed the set up instructions but did all the default set ups on this and wound up using the AFPS Setting and couldn't dragon drop files or pictures onto my external drive. I found this video and it explained perfectly that I was supposed to pick the Mac journal drive option. I had to reformat it and I also partitioned it into two separate drives like he discussed here. I have a 2 TB drive so I split it into one terabyte each. One for my Time Machine and one for my files. I did lose all of my previous files, but I have them backed up somewhere else that I can retrieve them. thank you very much for this video. It helped me a lot to understand, how to set one up.
Amazing video! I bought this external hard drive on amazon and the previous owner used it for Windows and I couldn't add files. Found out that I had to reformat it to Mac and it worked! YOU'RE THE BEST!
Absolutely brilliant video. I really like the way you speak, you're very detailed but without being patronising. Plus, I really appreciated the zoom in factor. Thank you.
Excellent video instruction. Thank you for being so detailed and precise. I was really getting nervous about how to use this SSD and how to properly install it. You made the job quite easy and I truly appreciate you!
Thank you SO MUCH. My photos and videos were eating up my 250GB harddrive (and Davinci Resolve). My Macbook pro is only a year old, and I had only 15GB left! 😬😬😬 This was perfect. Thank you!
This was probably the most helpful video I’ve had to watch this far on RUclips for my photography career! Thank you so much for putting this together 🙏
This is an amazing video. I can say it covers alot of what i was looking for and i was beggining to feel overwhelmed until i found this video. Thank you. 😃
This worked really well for me! I had an older unused lacie that my neighbor gave to me and I was having trouble setting up but this worked! thank you so much
Thank you for these instructions! You made it very easy and helpful. I found it interesting that once we formatted the HD / SSD, we could simply use the harddrive like a regular usb stick. Helpful, and it was better than having to learn new software from LACIE!
Outstanding video, crystal clear. Thank you very much indeed. Wish this video had been available a few years ago as I had to mop up extremely bad results of my faulty formatting for a Time Machine backup. So I especially appreciate the value of your explanation. Have subscribed and will be watching more of your excellent info!
Excellent tutorial. I followed your step by step instructions to the letter and my Lacie was set up in minutes. Thank you for this terrific video. Exceptionally helpful.
Thank you so much, your information is precise, to the point and instructions are easy to follow. I was getting frustrated for not being able to make my external hard drive work.
Thank you!!!! I found this so helpful as I have just started using a MacBook Pro. Your accurate information helped me to set up my external drive without any issues. It worked just so.
This is an excellent video. I spent a couple of frustrating hours trying to do this with the product instructions - ugh. With your video, all done perfectly without the frustration. Your explanation is so clear and you anticipate my questions. Where do I get information on what types of topics are included when you Join? Thanks again.
Your instruction video on using time machine with an external SSD is fabulous. Apple wouldn't/couldn't help as the external SDD is a non Apple authenticated product. It is a LaCie SSd. Thank you!
If I understood correctly, Keeping EXFAT (no partitioning) and using the drive as a backup for both Macbook and Windows device means I must update the backup manually each time, drag new files to the drive as if it was a USB stick? The only advantage here is that both devices have access to each other's backup...? Partitioning is a huge time saver as Time Machine does a complete, automatic back up of my Macbook and automatic back ups of my Windows device? Here, the backups are separate an inaccessible to each other and I can't transfer the entire content between two devices?
if you are editing youtube videos should you always keep your hard drive plugged in? Also what if you are taking a break from your lap top can you close it with the hard drive still plugged in and come back to what you were doing at a later time? or should you eject before you close the lap top? I am new to using a hard drive. I just want to keep all my footage on it and nothing on my mac.
excellently explained thanks - can you partition at a later stage an already partitioned section - ie i first portioned 50/50 and then later on I want to portion only one of the 50% to be 30\20 can this be done without affecting the other 50
did you forget to reformat the Pc + Mac partition back to exfat after partitioning? will windows be able to read what's in that hard drive even tho it's formatted Mac OS extended?
Great video! So can I ask, if you want to use the la cie with a time machine backup AND also to store files you have to partition it, even on a mac? Thanks
At 7:30 you say to select the second option when reformatting or erasing - but the first time you did it in the video, you did the first option. Is it okay to try the first option first?
All of this is madness. How is anyone supposed to know this when they open the package? Why do we have to rely on strangers on youtube? Does the damn thing come with instructions?
Fun fact: La Cie is actually a pun. The parent company is Seagate, and La Cie is French for "The Company". What's more, the enclosed chip is called a "FireCuda", which presumably is some sort of mythical sea monster. Lol. 🌊
I found this video extremely helpful. Thank you. I bought a new Lacie external hard drive and backed up my Macbook Pro. I then tried to add an additional folder of photos and was not able to. I checked the Lacie and it said "read only" and had no other option to change it. I followed your video here on how to format which deleted all info on the external hard drive. I checked the Info and indeed it said "read and write". So I backed up my Macbook Pro using Time Machine to the external hard drive. This took almost 24 hours but did completely back up. I then tried to add the extra folder of photos and again it says "read only". Do you have any suggestions? I'd hate to reformat again and have to spend 24 hours backing up just to find myself back in this same position.
Well it turns out it was my own fault. I tried a short cut by only watching part of your video. I went back and watched the whole thing and now things are working. Thank you so much
Does using Mac OS extended works also with newer versions? On the apple support it is reported that works just with version 10.12 or previous, so why it is not better to use APFS so that it is compatible also with version 10.13 or following? Also I have another question, I would like to run a virtual machine on my hard disk with windows installed on it but using my Mac of course. Can I install it with virtual box on the hard drive and use it from there without necessarily have it installed on my computer? In that case should I make an ExFat or Mac OS extended partition? Thank you in advance!
Hi, I just watched this video. Thanks for the information! BUT, I have a question. I just bought a Lacie Rugged Mini USB3 Drive and when i plugged it in and followed your instructions to 'Disk Utility' the format already said ExFAT. When I also clicked on 'Partition' the Scheme said: GUID Partition Map. And so i'm a little confused if I should still erase it even though its already with the format you suggested or just leave it ? @tech&design
@@TechandDesign can you be so kind to explain why it would still cause problems if left as it is since it’s the format you’re recommending ? Just so I can better understand. Thank you
Thank you for your video., I am a bit confused though. Hopefully you can help me. U have A LaCie usb-c rugged 1 TB. I also use a Mac pro. Do I just use ERASE, Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and Scheme: Master Boot Record?
Hi I have an old Lacie Rugged mini drive and I can't see it on my new Macbook pro. I do NOT want to reformat as I need to access all the files and I am not sure they are backed up? Help 🙏🏻
Hello, what if I'm planning to get this external hard drive just to download Windows on my Mac and download games for Windows? Do I need to to do partitioning as seen in the video?
I did not format the external HD before I backed up Time Machine on LaCie Rugged USB-C. I also never used time machine (or backed up my Mac). Should I do it over and follow these instructions?
the problem could be various things but not an “update”. it could be the usb port, the hub , the cable , or the external hard drive - which sometimes people unplug it without ejecting it first
What if I've tried everything and cannot find the external hard drive? I can't get past 2:30 because I can only find the internal drive, not the external. I've rebooted, made certain Finder shows hard disks, external disks, CDs, DVDs, and iPods, Connected servers. Help.
So, I have a Mac, I want to store pictures BUT I may want to send them to someone who may have a pc. Mac OS extended (journaled) + Master boot record OR ExFAT + GUID partition map.
Followed the set up here for LaCie Rugged USB-C and no problem. Did not partition. Dragged my music file to the external drive and it appears I lost that file (my music) and now can't find my external drive although it's still plugged into my Mac. Is it still transferring music (14.38GB) to ext drive or have I lost the file? Thanks!
@@TechandDesign Journaled as I only want to use with Macs. External Drive is new. My concern is my music folder as it has disappeared and I have 999.86 GB in my SSD which to me means nothing is saved there
