  • In this week's video I conquered the tallest mountain in New Mexico!
This hike is a little north of Santa Fe. I got there a little later than I should have. You ideally want to get on the trail as early as possible in order to outrun the typical afternoon thunderstorms that are common on the summit.
To start the hike you are walking through the Taos Ski Valley before crossing a bridge and walking through a beautiful forest. This section isn’t too steep. Follow the trail markings for Williams Lake.
Be careful and not miss the sharp turn after 2 clearings. If you miss the turn you will end up at Williams Lake. Which will be a pretty detour.
After making the sharp left turn, you will still be in the forest section but it will start to get a little steeper.
However, once you break through the tree-line it is going to get even steeper. You will also have to cross a few scree fields. Nothing crazy, just go slow and make sure not to hurt yourself.
There will be a few false summits along the way, and the trail will veer off to the left but the summit is actually to the right.
I wasn’t able to stay on the summit for long, a storm was rolling in fast and I booked it off the mountain after getting my few pictures.
Overall my total hike time was 4 hours 32 minutes. Super pretty hike with a decent challenge. I highly recommend this hike!

I have many more adventures planned like hiking to the tallest point on all 50 states (This hike, Wheeler Peak - New Mexico High Point, was one of many) and the highest point on all 7 continents.

I liked the narrative at the end with the map and trails explaining the hike and what to expect along the way.

Did you like Texas high point or new mexico better? Which is harder?

@chrislasala I feel like Wheeler Peak is prettier, but both were similar in difficulty if I remember correctly. Both are amazing hikes though!

That's so weird that the ski lifts run during the summer

Your butchering the name of Taos. Imagine replacing the h in house with a t. That is how you say Taos.
