I just climbed Humphrey for the first time the day before yesterday! I have a few physical challenges and I was lucky to have perfect weather and no wind !! It took me from 439am to 1245 to reach the summit and I didn’t get back to the th till 930 pm making my hike 17 total hours and I hiked alone but fortunately someone had met me and saw my strength and came back to make sure I was ok at sundown! What a blessing and a magical experience. I really like your video too! Great job! Kendrick is next for me after I recover
I climbed Humphrys Peak twice in my younger days. Those false peaks made me think, "Oh no, how much further to the top?" The reason you can't camp above 10,000 feet is because of sudden storms and lightning strikes. My second summit was on a clear day and I could see the north rim of the Grand Canyon that was 85 miles away. Congratulations on a climb that you'll never forget.

I was so excited to see your video I had to share with my husband, who climbed the peak twice many years ago. The first time was very difficult for him because he lost the trail in the snow and and he had 2 men help him near the peak, and on the way down. He called them his angels. They also took him to Bun Huggers in Flagstaff. A few years later we drove through Flagstaff and my husband took me to the base of Humphrey's Peak, and to Bun Huggers. If you haven't eaten there, you should. They handcraft their unique burgers and they are delicious! Once again, thank you for an awesome video!
Excellent video. My wife and I just did Wheeler Peak, NM with snow and ice on top. I hope to do Humphreys Peak when it gets warmer. Very good job describing what it was like during the climb. I'll watch this again before we go. Thanks.
Your hike reminds me a little of goat rocks wilderness and the knifes edge hike along the pct. it can be done as an incredibly long day hike or overnight hike. But the views are a million times better if you can luck out and get a clear day where you can see from mt adams to mt rainier. Some mountain hikes have amazing views. Really beautiful hike but you definitely have to earn it. It is easy to forget that Arizona has forests with huge elevation gains. It’s not just a desert climate. Thanks for sharing!

Good move driving in the night before hiking so you acclimated to the elevation. Many drive up from here in Phoenix early in the morning and get pretty sick. Not that we know anything about that. 😅 The ski lift is pretty cool. The gondolas are fairly new (changed over from the old school chairs as well as sped up). Fantastic way to see the aspens in autumn.
Ya, I have elevation experience from California, I always try to sleep at elevation the night before if possible haha. I bet the aspens are awesome in the fall!
I just did this hike 3 days ago mid October. Drove up from PHX area directly and yeah was definitely feeling ill with the 11K + elevation gain in a few hrs. Pushed thru though. Felt I was going to throw up while hiking up above 11.5K' but would rest every 100 vert and while resting felt fine. I didn't expect snow on the mountain but there was a lot even below the tree line. Felt like Everest, I imagine. Was glad when it was over.
This is a fantastic hike ... "very do-able" ... as long as you are prepared for one thing: "FALSE SUMMITS!" Yes, one after the other after the other. Until finally, at long last, you really do arrive at: "THE WOODEN SIGN." Yes, it really is up there. Somewhere ... But there is absolutely =nothing= to beat the experience of finally being up there, and "taking a 360 view."
Hi 👋 I summitted August 9th 2021. Some conditions, on and off clouds, but on the summit it cleared long enough for good views and photos. Wind was really whipping that day too. Freezing, literally at the top. I did luke you and hunkered down for a break and too eat. But didn't stay long. It was truly a great summit to do. And, I passed two girls trail running it. Little clarification, but the San Francisco peaks were a part of a single stratovolcano we call San Francisco Mountain, which used to reach up to 14-16,000+ ft before the summit collapsed to the northeast around 200,000 years ago, with subsequent erosion leaving the peaks we know today.
I did this hike years ago with my friend Harry Johnson. The first year we could not finish because it looked like a Hurricane at the top. The winds were just crazy like you described! The next year we attempted the climb, Harry had to stop because with his vision and Diabetes he shouldn't be hiking high mountains. I continued on by myself and it was either this latest year or last that the wind was so strong it blew my straw hat off and it was gone forever! I got to the top and at that time I did not have a camera so someone there took my picture at the summit and told me they would email it to me. Unfortunately I do not think I received the email. Also, Harry had nailed me with a snowball right in the face as I was turning around on the way up. That did not feel good! Harry's no longer with us so I can't be angry with him anymore. Besides, he is the one who got me started hiking years ago and I have been hiking ever since. I just finished a hike yesterday along a river here in Florida and it was just great! If I put my Humphreys Peak hike on my website I might want to use your video just to show people what it's like there. Back when I did these hikes in early 2000's there were no wooden poles for trail markers but we had good cairns. Thanks for the video.

I climbed Mount Humphreys in October 1989, when I was a tourist from England travelling round the US of A. I think you were a bit unfortunate with the weather, especially at the summit. I had sunny still conditions, got to the summit ridge about dawn. The views to the North were just amazing. The Grand Canyon, Painted Desert. As it's a volcano and not part of a chain of mountains you can see for miles and miles and miles. Very much recommended.
I am planning on hiking this in June of this year (2024). I have 2 concerns, elevation sickness and the weather. In 2019 I hike to the Phantom Ranch and back again in one day which was around 20 miles. I am looking forward to this hike.
I usually have a full hydration bladder of 3 liters and I may even put some hydration powder like Nuun in it as well. I usually have a bunch of snacks like trail mix, beef jerky, and maybe even a sandwich from the grocery store if it is a longer hike. Always try to pack more than I need.
I climbed this mountain twice. The first time I wasn't in very good shape, and after I passed 10,000 feet in elevation I kept fighting the urge to turn back. I mean, a voice in my head was screaming, "TURN BACK!"
I did it a month prior to this and sweated my butt off even at the summit. The clouds didn't move much my whole hike so I didn't really get any views at the top.

If anybody is driving on the 40 and wants to do this it can be done in less than four hours. My buddy and I drove out here and did it in 3hr 39 minutes car to car. If you’re trail running and have time it’s actually better to take the weatherford trail because there are less roots and rocks. It’s 22 round trip with 5200’ vert. Pretty gradual grade though.
